Volume Ten: Those Few Years After She and I Broke Up
Serves You Right
Since taking over the Feili Group, Yi Jing had been abroad a few times. The culture in other countries was more open; they pursued freedom and abandon, and their passionate, turbulent personalities were a bit much for Yi Jing to handle.
She had once spent an extended period abroad for a major project. During that time, she was frequently approached by others. Some were reserved and low-key, others were uninhibited and fiery, but no matter what tactics they used, Yi Jing would turn them down coldly.
Faced with her coldness and obstinance, those people all assumed Yi Jing was “sexually cold and indifferent,”1 someone who didn’t understand the first thing about flirting or romance, and they would leave, disappointed.
After being questioned so many times, Yi Jing even started to wonder in a daze if she really was “sexually cold and indifferent,” truly devoid of desire, apathetic and unfeeling.
But now, all those false perceptions were easily shattered by Wen Nuan.
The call had ended on its own.
The sofa was a complete mess, her nightgown mangled beyond recognition.
Yi Jing’s eyes were hazy as she stared blankly at the crystal chandelier in the living room, her lips slightly parted, panting with effort.
She was like a fish just slipped into water.
Damp with sweat, her clean fragrance filled the air.
Wen Nuan planted a kiss on her shoulder and said softly, “Are you hungry? I made congee. Want some?”
Yi Jing froze for a moment, then came back to her senses and nodded subconsciously. “…Okay.”
“Okay.” Wen Nuan stood up, picked up the blanket that had been kicked to the floor, and draped it over Yi Jing’s naked body.
She wiped the sweat from Yi Jing’s forehead and smiled. “Want me to carry you to the bathroom to wash up?”
Yi Jing clutched the blanket, her lips pressed together. “No need.”
“Oh?” Wen Nuan lowered her gaze. “Are you sure?”
Yi Jing took a deep breath and said firmly, “I don’t need you to.”
She could do it herself.
Wen Nuan stood up, her hands on her hips. “Alright then, I’ll watch you walk over.”
She wasn’t joking. If Yi Jing could stand up straight, she would swear to be the “lie-down 0”2 from now on.
The System stroked its chin: 【OK, I’ll be the witness!】
Wen Nuan: “…You’re everywhere, aren’t you?”
【I am omnipresent,】 the System said with a gentle smile.
Under Wen Nuan’s watchful gaze, Yi Jing wrapped the blanket around herself.
She admitted she was trying to cover things up, only making them more obvious3. After all, she had already shown Wen Nuan everything just moments ago.
Placing the tips of her toes on the floor, Yi Jing was about to stand when a numbness shot through her leg and her waist gave way. Her entire body pitched forward.
Wen Nuan had already opened her arms, waiting for Yi Jing to fall into her embrace.
The softness she expected. For the first time, Yi Jing was so certain that when she fell, Wen Nuan would catch her.
“I told you that you couldn’t do it, so why act tough?” Wen Nuan scooped Yi Jing up princess-style and headed for the bathroom. “Wouldn’t it be better to just be a good girl and listen?”
Yi Jing bit her lip. “…I can do it.”
Her pride wouldn’t allow her to show weakness in front of Wen Nuan.
“Is that so?” Wen Nuan pretended to loosen her grip, feeling the arms around her neck suddenly tighten.
She let out a soft laugh. “Holding on so tight? Afraid I’ll drop you?”
Yi Jing looked up. “Would you dare? If you dare to drop me, I’ll call the police and have you arrested.”
“Oh no, you’ve got me there,” Wen Nuan feigned a pitiful expression. “I guess I can’t run away now.”
Yi Jing hid a smile, her tone fierce. “Good that you know.”
Wen Nuan set her down on the toilet. “Go on and wash up. Call me if you need anything.”
“Get me some clothes.” Yi Jing only had a blanket wrapped around her. Her nightgown from before was a wreck, let alone wearable.
Wen Nuan looked at her leisurely. “I don’t mind if you’re naked.”
Yi Jing’s face was impassive. “I mind.”
“Alright, I’ll go get them for you.” Wen Nuan tilted her head. “Want something sexy?”
A faint blush appeared on Yi Jing’s face. “A white t-shirt and black pants will be fine.”
“The abstinent look?” Wen Nuan’s smile was cheeky. “I like that too.”
“Is there anything you don’t like?”
“What? Is there something I don’t like that you’d wear just for that reason?”
Yi Jing raised an eyebrow. “Naturally. I have no interest in pleasing you.”
Wen Nuan stroked her chin, thought for a moment, and said earnestly, “I don’t like you being naked.”
Yi Jing: “….”
Watching the bathroom door close, Wen Nuan let out a laugh.
Yi Jing leaned against the door, looking at her flushed reflection in the mirror, ears burning red.
She felt like her whole world had been thrown into chaos.
Wen Nuan returned to the kitchen and heard the phone on the sofa ringing again. This time it wasn’t Wen Xiuning, but Yi Jing’s employee, Secretary Li.
Wen Nuan answered the call.
“Boss, good morning.”
“Your boss is in the shower. This is Wen Nuan.”
Secretary Li paused for a moment. “Miss Wen, good morning.”
“Morning. Shouldn’t you be resting on the weekend? Is there something you need, Secretary Li?” Wen Nuan asked as she ladled congee into a bowl.
Secretary Li hesitated. “It’s nothing urgent. I can just call the boss back later.”
Wen Nuan didn’t want to meddle in work matters, so she didn’t press further.
Seeing Yi Jing walk out of the bathroom, Wen Nuan said directly, “Secretary Li just called. Said she needed to talk to you.”
“Oh?” Yi Jing took her phone and saw a WeChat4 message from Secretary Li.
It was a link to a news article.
Yi Jing tapped the link. The headline jumped out at her: “Hanwen Group’s President Wen and Wen Nuan Are Intimate; Is Wen Xiuning the One Keeping Her?!”
The photos inside were taken at the Jinxiu Juizhuang5. The paparazzi shot was sly, but it did manage to frame Wen Xiuning and Wen Nuan in a way that suggested an affair.
In the photo, the two were standing very close, and Wen Xiuning was even gripping Wen Nuan’s wrist. It looked quite intimate.
But Yi Jing knew it was impossible. Their sudden encounter had to be related to her.
Yi Jing recalled how Wen Xiuning had tried to test her back then. He must have known Wen Nuan had returned to the country. For him to meet with Wen Nuan again now, it couldn’t be a simple reunion, could it?
Wen Nuan noticed Yi Jing staring at her. “What are you thinking about? Come and eat.”
Yi Jing set her phone aside and sat down next to Wen Nuan, looking at the plain congee on the table. “You can cook?”
“I can only make congee.”
Yi Jing took a sip. It was a bit sweet.
“Did you add sugar?”
“Mhm. You like sweets, so I added sugar to your bowl,” Wen Nuan said with a smile.
She had a “praise me” look on her face, watching Yi Jing with delight.
Yi Jing pretended not to notice. She asked, feigning casualness, “The fashion show you attended last night was hosted by the Hanwen Group. Did you happen to run into any acquaintances?”
Wen Nuan answered candidly, “I ran into Wen Xiuning.”
“Did you two talk?”
“Just a few words of pleasantry,” Wen Nuan said, then looked at Yi Jing. “What? Is there another ‘kept woman’ scandal about me?”
“You’re quite self-aware,” Yi Jing said, folding her arms across her chest.
“Do you believe it?”
That she was being kept by Wen Xiuning?
The very thought was laughable.
Yi Jing shook her head. “No.”
Wen Nuan smiled. “That’s all that matters. You know better than anyone what our relationship is.”
“I certainly do. After all, he’s your benefactor, isn’t he?” Yi Jing’s expression darkened.
“What?” Wen Nuan didn’t understand what she meant.
The male lead had never saved her. What favor did she owe him?
“The favor of saving you from a sea of fire, was it not?” Yi Jing said coldly. “Being with me back then was like a mountain of knives and a sea of fire6, wasn’t it?”
Wen Nuan put down her spoon and looked at Yi Jing. “If I said I know I was wrong, that I regret it, would you believe me?”
Yi Jing dug her nails into her palm and said through gritted teeth, “No.”
Wen Nuan gave a self-deprecating laugh. “Then what will it take for you to believe me?”
“Didn’t you say it yourself?”
Her smile was sarcastic and icy. “That even if you died, you would never love me.”
“How am I supposed to believe you?”
“By letting you die?”
Zhai Yi watched Wen Nuan spacing out. Ever since she got back, she had been sitting on the living room sofa in a daze, from noon until night.
Her eyes were blank, her entire being crestfallen.
“What on earth are you thinking about?” Zhai Yi hadn’t seen Wen Nuan since she returned from the banquet last night.
She didn’t answer her calls or reply to her texts, and today she had been in a “vegetative state” since she got back. It was hard not to let one’s imagination run wild.
“What’s wrong with you?” Zhai Yi poured Wen Nuan a glass of water. “You haven’t said a single word since you came home. Did something happen last night?”
Wen Nuan’s eyes shifted. She turned her head mechanically to look at Zhai Yi. “Huh?”
Seeing she finally got a reaction, Zhai Yi asked again, “I said, what’s wrong with you? Did something happen last night? Why have you just been sitting here in a daze?”
Wen Nuan turned back, staring blankly at the glass of water. “It’s nothing.”
“You don’t look like it’s nothing. What happened?” Zhai Yi pressed. “Are you comfortable telling me?”
When Wen Nuan didn’t speak, Zhai Yi ventured a guess. “You didn’t come home last night. You stayed at your ex-girlfriend’s place, didn’t you?”
Wen Nuan’s eyelids twitched.
Noticing the change, Zhai Yi knew her guess was right and continued down that line of questioning.
“Did old flames rekindle?”
Since Wen Nuan’s ex let her stay the night, she must still have feelings for her.
Wen Nuan paused, then shook her head. “No.”
Zhai Yi’s brow furrowed. “She let you stay over, but you didn’t get back together? Your breakup wasn’t a pleasant one, was it?”
Wen Nuan ran a hand through her hair. “Yeah.”
It was a very unpleasant breakup. Wen Nuan thought of Yi Jing back then.
Desperate and helpless.
Seeing Wen Nuan’s dejected state, Zhai Yi sighed. “You want to make things right with her, but she can’t get over the hurdle in her heart?”
Wen Nuan covered her face and nodded. “Yes.”
“Then tell me, in that relationship, what was the cruelest thing you ever did to her?”
Wen Nuan’s pupils widened, her voice wavering. “…I took five million yuan from someone else to leave her. And to make her give up on me completely, I told her….”
“That I would rather die than ever love her.”
Back then, even when Yi Jing found out Wen Xiuning had paid her five million yuan to leave, she wasn’t angry at her. She only blamed herself for not making enough money to keep her.
Yi Jing’s lingering affection and feelings for her had exceeded the control of the Heavenly Dao7. The Main System had issued a mandatory order: she had to make the female lead give up on her, or the mission world would be considered a failure, and all her points would be deducted.
Wen Nuan was an extreme egoist, and back then, she was far too heartless. In her eyes, points and freedom were more important than the female lead.
She believed the female lead was just a “paper person” in a mission world, so she hurt her without a shred of mercy or sympathy. She hurt her as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Wen Nuan had candidly said those cruel words to Yi Jing, stabbing her until she was a bloody mess.
Zhai Yi froze completely. Her mouth opened and closed, her voice dry and hoarse. “Then… then you really… you serve you right.”
That’s right.
Doesn’t she just serve you right?
The author has something to say:
Yan Hui (gloating): Yeah, you totally deserve it. Now you know how this daddy8 felt when you screwed me over, right? Now you know what it feels like when nobody believes you, no matter what you say, right?
Wen Nuan (annoyed and guilty): SHUT UP!
