Volume Ten: Those Few Years After She and I Broke Up
Nervousness
“Did you want to catch up… or talk business?”
Wen Nuan pushed the red wine aside, tapping the document with her fingertips. “Business.”
Yi Jing lowered her brow. “Lawyer Mao discussed the contents with you, didn’t he?”
“Mhm,” Wen Nuan said casually. “Either pay the money or go to jail.”
Yi Jing nodded. “Your choice?”
“Go to jail.”
Yi Jing’s expression changed.
Wen Nuan took it all in and teased, “Just kidding. Why would I want to go to jail in the prime of my youth?”
A flash of embarrassment and resentment passed through Yi Jing’s eyes as she mocked, “You can still joke at a time like this? You really are heartless, aren’t you?”
“But I can’t come up with that much money,” Wen Nuan said pitifully. “It’s nearly five million—do you want me to sell my body?”
Yi Jing narrowed her eyes. “Wen Nuan, can you be serious?”
Wen Nuan pouted. “Aren’t I seriously trying to think of a solution?”
“Is that what you call thinking?” Yi Jing’s tone couldn’t hide her anger and disappointment. “With all this wisecracking, I think you really want to eat prison food?”
“Are you angry?”
A trace of unnaturalness flashed across Yi Jing’s face, her tone flat. “What do I have to be angry about?”
Wen Nuan deliberately asked, “Xiao Jing, are you worried about me?”
Yi Jing’s hand, resting on the sofa, suddenly trembled. It was a physiological panic; no matter how calm she pretended to be, she couldn’t resist her inner truth.
“Worried about you?” Yi Jing looked up, her eyes cold. “Do you think I would worry about you?”
Wen Nuan sighed. “True. You probably can’t wait for me to go to jail, right?”
Yi Jing frowned. “It’s only five million. You don’t need to go to jail at all. Can’t you afford to pay it?”
“I have no money.” Wen Nuan dug into her pocket and pulled out a crumpled five-yuan bill. “I have exactly five yuan on my entire body. I was planning to take the bus back to the dorm later.”
“…”
Yi Jing rubbed her forehead. “Didn’t Wen Xiuning give it to you?”
“He told you that?” Wen Nuan sneered. “If I told you I didn’t take that five million back then, would you believe him or me?”
Yi Jing looked a bit flustered. She gritted her teeth. “The witnesses and physical evidence are all there. Why should I believe you?”
“You love money so much; would you really pass up five million?”
Wen Nuan lowered her eyes. “Oh, alright.”
“You should believe him. I did take the five million, but I spent it all in the US. Not a penny left.”
Yi Jing felt like she was being toyed with by Wen Nuan and shouted angrily, “Wen Nuan!”
Wen Nuan smiled brilliantly. “Mm, I’m here.”
Yi Jing’s heart clenched at her smile.
Just like in the beginning, every time she called Wen Nuan, she would smile and say to her, “Mm, I’m here.”
But as Wen Nuan pushed her luck and got closer to her, those days seemed gone forever.
Yi Jing lowered her eyes, looked at her watch, and said coldly, “You only have ten minutes left.”
“I can’t come up with the money right now. Can you give me some time?”
Yi Jing cast a meaningful look at Wen Nuan. “How long?”
Wen Nuan calculated. “Ten years.”
Yi Jing sneered. “Keep dreaming.”
“Five years?”
“I’m calling the police.”
Wen Nuan made a dramatic ‘stop’ gesture. “One year is okay, right?”
Yi Jing took out her phone and typed “110”1. “Three months, maximum.”
“…” Wen Nuan sighed. “So there’s no room for negotiation?”
Yi Jing’s gaze was dark and deep. She stood up and took a contract out of the desk drawer.
She handed it to Wen Nuan. “Consider this?”
Wen Nuan flipped through it, her expression turning strange, and chuckled. “Are you trying to make me your sugar baby?”
Yi Jing’s brows furrowed. “It is compensation.”
“Three months. As long as you fulfill the terms of the contract, the debt between us will be written off.”
Wen Nuan looked at the contract and read aloud one by one: “When Party A needs Party B, Party B must be on call immediately and cannot refuse.”
“If I’m taking a shower and you want to see me, do I have to run to you naked?” She found it amazing.
Yi Jing’s face flashed with panic. “…Naturally.”
“Party A must satisfy Party B’s needs. If you want me to commit murder, arson, rape, pillage, or sell myself, do I have to satisfy you too?”
“…I am not you.”
“…” Wen Nuan felt like she had just been cursed out by Yi Jing. “This contract is basically an unfair treaty, isn’t it?”
Yi Jing tapped her forehead lightly and said indifferently, “It’s only three months. Five million and jail time written off—if anything, I’m the one losing out.”
“I won’t force you to do bad things, nor will I ask you to do anything out of line.”
Wen Nuan put down the contract. “Indeed, you are losing out.”
“So what is the meaning of this contract?”
Yi Jing took a sip of red wine. “In three months, I’m getting married.”
Wen Nuan frowned. “So? Want to have some fun before the wedding?”
“My life has been smooth sailing, but I’ve only stumbled once,” Yi Jing looked at her. “That was you.”
“I don’t allow stains in my life. I want to wipe away my stain with my own hands.”
Wen Nuan pointed at herself. “I’m your stain?”
Yi Jing sneered. “Aren’t you?”
Wen Nuan pouted.
“Well?” Yi Jing glanced at her watch again. “You have two minutes to consider.”
“I have only one question.”
“What?”
“Xiao Jing, are you afraid of repeating the same mistakes?”
Yi Jing’s face darkened. She hesitated for a moment before saying calmly, “That won’t happen.”
Wen Nuan smiled. “Okay.”
She took the pen and signed her name.
Yi Jing watched Wen Nuan’s retreating back and said faintly, “Have you ever truly loved anyone?”
Wen Nuan turned around. “What do you think?”
Yi Jing walked up to Wen Nuan and lightly touched her chest with her fingertips. “You haven’t.”
Wen Nuan raised her hand to hold hers. It was very cold.
She patted the back of her hand, smiling faintly. “Xiao Jing, I’m leaving.”
“Call me if you need anything.”
Yi Jing’s gaze was deep as she watched Wen Nuan leave her sight.
Her phone rang. The caller ID was “Wen Xiuning”.
In that moment, Yi Jing rejected the call decisively and abruptly.
The Jinxiu Winery was a bit remote. The buses here stopped running at seven o’clock, and there were no shared bikes2 at the bus stop. Wen Nuan could only walk along the roadside.
It was drizzling, the dampness annoying.
Wen Nuan had a cigarette in her mouth, the smoke she exhaled scattered by the raindrops.
【Three months. The female lead is going to marry the male lead. What are your thoughts?】 The system asked worriedly.
“System, have you forgotten?” Wen Nuan’s voice was so faint it seemed suppressed by the smoke.
【What?】
“In this mission world, we have a special task.”
The system paused, then realized and exclaimed, 【Ah, the “Replacement” mission.】
Wen Nuan sighed. “The female lead didn’t fall for that scumbag ex-boyfriend first according to the plot; instead, she fell for me first. The main system required us to correct the plot immediately and execute the ‘Replacement’ mission. I needed to take on the identity of the ‘scumbag ex’ who hurt the female lead, causing her emotional trauma. This way, the ‘true’ male lead could step in, comfort her wounded heart, and the two of them could achieve merit and move towards happiness.”
【And then you fucking played with fire.】 The system slapped its head, filled with regret.
Wen Nuan also looked annoyed. “You know I’m not a good person. Naturally, I do whatever I want. Plus, I wasn’t bent back then, so naturally, I resisted the female lead’s advances.”
【Sigh, what a sin.】 The system lamented.
In this mission world, Wen Nuan was the most real, and also the most ruthless.
The phone rang. It was Zhai Yi.
“You’re not back at this hour?” It was Cong Hui speaking. “The dorm manager came to check and found you missing. Zhai Yi said you went to see a doctor. How are you?”
Smoke caught in her throat, choking Wen Nuan into a few coughs.
Cong Hui heard it. “Are you really sick? Is it serious? Uncomfortable? Do you need someone to visit?”
Wen Nuan pinched her throat, accepting the excuse of being sick, and said with a raspy voice, “…I’m okay. I’ll be back in an hour.”
“Okay.” This time it was Zhai Yi.
She thought of Wen Nuan’s situation yesterday and asked, “Do you still need…”
The call suddenly cut off.
Zhai Yi frowned, dialed again, and found the phone was turned off.
Wen Nuan looked at the dead phone, then at the desolate surroundings where there was no village ahead and no shop behind.
There wasn’t a single car passing by on the road. She estimated she still had to walk another half hour to the next bus stop.
Wen Nuan finished one cigarette and lit another. Just after taking two puffs, she heard a honk behind her.
She turned around and saw a low-key yet luxurious Mercedes stopped in front of her.
The rear window rolled down, and Yi Jing’s cold face appeared before Wen Nuan’s eyes.
Wen Nuan froze for a moment, then waved. “Hey, Sugar Mommy.”
Yi Jing corrected coldly, “It’s creditor.”
“Whatever you say.”
Yi Jing glanced at Secretary Li, who was driving. “Unlock the door.”
“Yes.” Secretary Li unlocked the car.
“Get in.” Yi Jing tapped on the car window.
Wen Nuan politely refused. “No need to trouble you, I’m almost at the bus station.”
Secretary Li was surprised that someone dared to refuse his boss.
Especially since this person would be an artist for their Lin Guan Entertainment in the future. Treating the boss with such disrespect—she’d better be careful not to get blacklisted.
Yi Jing turned her head to look at her. “Forgot so soon?”
“What?” Wen Nuan realized and smiled. “It starts now? I thought I’d have some free time.”
Yi Jing’s face was dark. “It started the moment you signed.”
Wen Nuan twitched the corner of her mouth. “Where are you taking me?”
“Where do you want to go?”
Not returning to the dorm so late, does she want to go out and play?!
Wen Nuan teased, “I want to go into your heart.”
Yi Jing: “…”
Secretary Li: “…”
To dare use such cheesy pickup lines on his boss—she was indeed a ruthless character.
Yi Jing kept a cold face. “Drive.”
Just as Secretary Li was about to start the car, Wen Nuan grabbed onto the car window, her eyebrows drooping as she said pitifully, “I was wrong. Don’t leave me alone in the cold wind, washed by the rain, helpless and alone.”
A look of hesitation flashed through Yi Jing’s eyes. She watched Wen Nuan’s exquisite face deliberately making a pitiful and aggrieved expression. Her hair was wet from the drizzle, which indeed could arouse pity and concern in one’s heart.
This woman was the best at bewitching people’s hearts.
Secretary Li didn’t know whether to drive or stop. Mainly because that ruthless woman was clinging to the car door and wouldn’t let go, so he couldn’t start the car properly.
Yi Jing lowered her eyelashes and whispered, “Get in.”
“Alrighty.”
Wen Nuan ran to the other side of the car and sat grandly next to Yi Jing.
Yi Jing saw her sit down and casually sway her body. “Quiet.”
Wen Nuan sat obediently.
Seeing her suddenly so well-behaved, Yi Jing felt unexpectedly unaccustomed to it.
“Drive.”
Secretary Li received permission and immediately started the car.
The wheels seemed to run over something, causing the car to shake violently.
Wen Nuan hadn’t fastened her seatbelt. Affected by inertia, she fell directly onto Yi Jing.
Secretary Li quickly apologized, “Sorry, Boss, I didn’t notice the road conditions. Are you alright?”
Yi Jing looked at Wen Nuan lying on top of her, her face darkening as she gritted her teeth. “Get up.”
Wen Nuan sat up and smiled awkwardly. “Sorry, haha.”
Yi Jing dusted off her clothes with a look of disgust and said coldly, “Keep driving.”
Wen Nuan fastened her seatbelt and watched the car start smoothly.
Suddenly, she said, “Xiao Jing, your scent hasn’t changed.”
Yi Jing was taken back to the Tan family only after her first year of working. Before that, her life had been quite difficult. Her parents died in a car accident when she graduated from high school, and she supported herself alone with the compensation money and money earned from work-study programs.
While other young girls were wrapped in bags, beautiful clothes, and expensive perfumes, she was shuttling between various workplaces every day.
Sometimes Yi Jing was so busy she was drenched in sweat, and her body would have a faint, elegant fragrance.
Wen Nuan would laugh and call her “Fragrant Princess”3.
Yi Jing was not naturally prone to sweating. Aside from when she was overworked or exercising, there was only one other reason that would cause Yi Jing to sweat.
That was—
Wen Nuan leaned in, a flash of amusement in her eyes, the corners of her mouth curling up. “Xiao Jing, are you nervous?”
