Volume Nine: The Years I Was a Witch
Earring
There were very few people in the supermarket on a rainy day. You Dai’er thought of a few sweet-flavored dishes, bought the groceries, paid, and walked home carrying two bags of produce.
The rain showed no sign of letting up.
An umbrella suddenly appeared over her head. You Dai’er turned her head to look at the person and smiled helplessly.
An old acquaintance.
Ding Nisheng watched with a face full of pleasant surprise as the blonde beauty smiled at him. He thought the beauty was interested in him too, and feeling pleased with himself, he asked, “Beauty, why come out to buy groceries on such a rainy day without an umbrella?”
“What about you? The Dingyuan Festival1 in Xile Town is already over, so why are you still here?” You Dai’er was puzzled; the fate between the two of them was quite the joke.
Ding Nisheng answered off the cuff, “I got tired from playing, so I thought I’d rest for a few days before leaving.”
Before the words were even out of his mouth, he realized something. “Hey, how did you know I’m not from around here, beauty?”
You Dai’er said flatly, “You don’t look like a local.”
Ding Nisheng was easy to fool. He believed her explanation as soon as he heard it. “Are you a local, beauty?”
“I suppose so.”
Ding Nisheng looked at the two large bags in her hands. “Beauty, let me help you carry those. How can a slender, weak little lady like you carry something so heavy?”
You Dai’er let Ding Nisheng take the bags from her.
The moment Ding Nisheng took them, his two hands felt as if they had received a pair of giant axes. They were so heavy he immediately staggered.
Are these bags filled with groceries?
They’re not full of rocks, are they?!
You Dai’er had bought quite a lot of rice and cooking oil. The two bags added up to about fifty or sixty jin2. Ding Nisheng, taking them so suddenly, definitely couldn’t handle it.
You Dai’er took the bags back, thinking she shouldn’t bully Ding Nisheng anymore. Otherwise, Wen Nuan would get angry with her again, and it wouldn’t be worth the trouble.
Ding Nisheng watched You Dai’er walk ahead with light steps, as if the two bags in her hands were as light as feathers.
He swallowed hard, marveling at how strong this blonde beauty was.
Ding Nisheng picked up the umbrella from the ground and chased after her. “Beauty, you’re really strong, huh?”
“It’s you who’s too feeble.”
“….”
This was a matter of a man’s dignity.
Ding Nisheng immediately denied it, “I’m not feeble!”
You Dai’er’s gaze was teasing, filled to the brim with mockery.
Silently ridiculed by her, Ding Nisheng looked at her carrying the two large bags with a relaxed expression, pursed his lips, and said no more.
“My name is Ding Nisheng,” he introduced himself. “What’s your name, beauty?”
“You Dai’er.”
“Do you have a boyfriend, beauty?”
“No.” You Dai’er saw Ding Nisheng let out a sigh of relief, then she smiled. “But I have a girlfriend.”
Ding Nisheng choked. “A… a female friend?”
You Dai’er said deliberately, “The kind of girlfriend you can kiss and go to bed with.”
Ding Nisheng: “….”
His face was full of embarrassment. “Then… then I wish you two happiness.”
You Dai’er smiled faintly. “Many thanks.”
The two walked in silence to the stone slab path in the woods. You Dai’er stopped and looked at Ding Nisheng. “This is fine. You can go.”
“It’s no problem, I’ll see you home. The rain hasn’t stopped, and you don’t have an umbrella. It’s not safe for a young lady to be alone on a rainy day.”
Although his infatuation had vanished, as a gentleman, he should still see a lonely and helpless young lady home.
You Dai’er’s eyes narrowed, a dark glint flashing within them. “Go back.”
Ding Nisheng’s eyes lost focus for a moment, and he immediately turned and walked back the way he came.
“Wait a minute.”
Ding Nisheng stopped, his gaze dull.
You Dai’er held both bags in one hand, took the umbrella from Ding Nisheng, and said coldly, “You can go now.”
Ding Nisheng left under the heavy rain.
When Wen Nuan saw You Dai’er come back with an umbrella, she asked in surprise, “Where did you get that?”
“There was a Lei Feng.”3
Wen Nuan: “….”
You Dai’er cooked a large table of food, almost all of it sweet. Unfortunately, neither of them touched it. They just sat quietly, looking at the dishes on the table, listening to the torrential downpour all night long.
The heavy rain fell for a long time, showing no signs of stopping.
You Dai’er often saw Wen Nuan secretly glancing out the window. She desperately wanted to see a clear, sunny day.
At times like these, You Dai’er wished she could command the wind and rain, to drag the sun out for Wen Nuan.
You Dai’er carried a bowl of sweet soup into the room and saw Wen Nuan lying on her side on the bed, staring blankly at the continuous drizzle outside.
She placed the sweet soup on the bedside table. “I made some sweet soup. Would you like some?”
Wen Nuan smiled faintly. “Okay.”
She took the bowl from You Dai’er, took a sip, and her eyes widened in pleasant surprise. “This is delicious.”
You Dai’er smiled wistfully. “Are you feeling unwell anywhere?”
Wen Nuan took another sip and shook her head. “No, it’s very good.”
During this period, You Dai’er had cooked delicious meals for her almost every day, but Wen Nuan would vomit until the sky and earth turned dark after just one bite.
“How did you make this?” Wen Nuan drank the sweet soup until the bottom of the bowl faced the sky.
“I got a bit of a potion from Pu Ye. It allows you to eat human food. You haven’t eaten properly these past few days, so I made some sweet soup.”
Wen Nuan licked her lips. “It’s really good.”
Seeing her childish appearance, You Dai’er couldn’t help but laugh. “Want more? I’ll go get you another bowl.”
Wen Nuan nodded quickly, saying urgently, “Mhm, mhm, I want more.”
You Dai’er quickly ladled another bowl. Watching Wen Nuan gulp it down, she said deliberately, “You drank the last bowl. I didn’t even get a single taste.”
The person drinking the soup paused. She put the bowl down, embarrassed. “You said it too late, I already finished it.”
You Dai’er looked at the empty bowl and let out a “pfft” of laughter. “I’m teasing you. I don’t like human food anyway.”
“You really didn’t have any? Didn’t you taste it after you made it?”
You Dai’er shook her head. “I brought it to you as soon as I finished.”
“That’s a real shame. It was exceptionally delicious,” Wen Nuan said, feeling sorry for her.
Seeing Wen Nuan’s satisfied expression, You Dai’er felt a sense of joy from being needed, but she deliberately feigned anger. “What? Trying to make me angry?”
Wen Nuan shrugged. “No, I was just thinking it would have been nice if you could have had some.”
“If you were really thinking of me, you wouldn’t have drunk it until the bottom of the bowl faced the sky.” You Dai’er pointed at the empty bowl. “If I had said something a moment later, you might have eaten the bowl itself.”
“….”
It had been a long time since Wen Nuan had eaten human food. For a foodie like her, it was a painful and unbearable torture. To be able to drink such a delicious sweet soup now without feeling nauseous almost made her want to cry with joy.
She crooked a finger. “If you want a drink, I can help you. As long as you beg me, I can consider letting you have a taste.”
You Dai’er wanted to see what trick Wen Nuan was up to. Her eyes drooped, and she held Wen Nuan’s hand, putting on a pitiful look. “Then I’m begging you.”
Wen Nuan’s lips curved into a smile. She pulled You Dai’er closer and kissed her.
You Dai’er’s pupils shrank. She savored this hard-won, clear sweetness, a sweetness that made the tip of her heart tremble.
Wen Nuan pulled back slightly, her tone ambiguous. “Is it sweet?”
You Dai’er’s mouth was slightly agape, as if waiting for Wen Nuan to enter. “Too fast. I didn’t get to taste it. Let me have another taste.”
A smile touched the corners of Wen Nuan’s eyes. She placed a light kiss on the corner of You Dai’er’s mouth and said dotingly, “Mhm, have another taste.”
The clear sweetness deepened along the tip of her tongue, the flavor growing richer, twisting and twining.
Passion stirred, overturning clouds and covering seas4; raindrops shattered the gasps.
Outside, the shadows of the trees swayed. The wind blew away all the gloom, and the moonlight quietly fell, illuminating the two people, whose love was deeply hidden, with a clear and transparent light.
You Dai’er slept deeply this time, holding Wen Nuan’s body with her eyes closed.
Even though Wen Nuan had become a vampire, her body was still as warm as ever.
But at this moment, what she felt was ice-cold.
You Dai’er’s eyes flew open. She saw Wen Nuan lying lifelessly in her arms. There was no beat in her chest, no breath from her nose, no warmth in her body, as if all of last night’s passion had been her dream of the southern branch5.
An ominous premonition flashed through the bottom of her heart. She hurriedly shook Wen Nuan’s body and said urgently, “Wen Nuan, wake up, don’t scare me, I’m begging you….”
“Wen Nuan… Wen Nuan…” You Dai’er pinched her philtrum6 and bit her fingertips.
To wake Wen Nuan up, she bit her own wrist, using fresh blood to entice her to awaken.
But after all this, nothing changed.
Wen Nuan was like a block of ice that could not be melted, remaining unchanged no matter how she struck or kneaded it.
“Wen Nuan, I beg you, don’t die…”
A huge panic enveloped You Dai’er. She felt like she was trapped in a sealed box.
“Wen Nuan, don’t be like this, I’m begging you, wake up….” You Dai’er’s voice was choked with sobs, her pleas shrill. “Don’t leave me all alone, okay?”
A vampire’s life is eternal. If you’re not here, how is she supposed to get through this long life?
A person who has seen the light cannot return to the darkness.
“Wen Nuan, don’t… don’t leave me all alone?”
Her eye sockets felt incredibly sore, as if something was about to burst out.
An icy teardrop fell on the space between Wen Nuan’s eyebrows, like a giant boulder falling from the sky, smashing a ravine between her brows.
You Dai’er hugged Wen Nuan tightly, as if clutching the last life-saving straw.
She stared blankly out the window. The sun was bright, brilliant, and colorful.
“Don’t, don’t cry.”
Warm fingertips gently brushed the corner of her eye. The doting and cherishing tone pierced through You Dai’er’s heart.
Having lost and then regained her, You Dai’er broke down and cried uncontrollably, hugging Wen Nuan’s body. “Wen Nuan…. Wen Nuan….”
She called her name over and over, as if proving again and again that Wen Nuan was still alive.
Wen Nuan responded in a low voice, “I’m here, don’t cry.”
Little crybaby.
Wen Nuan didn’t know how long she had been unconscious, but seeing You Dai’er crying her heart out like this, she figured she must have scared her.
She stroked her trembling back, coaxing her again and again, saying, “Don’t cry, I’m here.”
You Dai’er rested her head on Wen Nuan’s shoulder, staring dazedly at the sunlight outside the window.
The weather after the rain was exceptionally clear, exceptionally scorching.
She raised a hand and touched Wen Nuan’s back.
She seemed to have lost a lot of weight. The bones of her back were exposed, section by section, so her hand couldn’t slide down smoothly.
Last night, she had taken deep breaths several times, and each gasp seemed to use up all her strength.
They loved each other to death’s door; they saved each other.
“Little witch?”
It had been a long time since Wen Nuan had heard this name, and she actually felt a bit nostalgic. “Hm?”
You Dai’er hugged her waist tightly and said serenely, “Today is a beautiful day.”
“Mhm, it’s a beautiful day.”
The sunlight had already lit up the room, filling it with life.
“Shall we go sunbathe?”
Wen Nuan was taken aback for a moment, then smiled. “Okay.”
You Dai’er found a white dress for Wen Nuan. She looked beautiful in it, like a princess.
Hand in hand, they were just about to walk out the door.
“Wait a minute.”
Wen Nuan looked at You Dai’er, puzzled. She watched her take off her earring and place it on the table.
She walked back, took her hand, their fingers lacing tightly, and smiled brilliantly. “Let’s go, let’s go sunbathe.”
Wen Nuan’s eyes stung, and she raised a smile. “Okay.”
She also took off her earring and placed it next to You Dai’er’s. “Let’s go.”
“There’s one more thing I haven’t done,” You Dai’er said suddenly.
“What?”
Wen Nuan watched in astonishment as You Dai’er knelt on one knee, took a ring box out of her pocket, and opened it. Inside was a red diamond ring the size of a pigeon’s egg.
“Marry me, okay?”
The bride of her dreams.
Wen Nuan’s eyes were filled with excitement, shimmering with unshed tears. She tremblingly held out her hand and said with difficulty, “Yes.”
You Dai’er piously placed the ring on Wen Nuan’s finger. She bent down and kissed the back of her hand with pity and deep love.
The two sat on the rocking chair, talking about all sorts of things from the past.
When they talked about happy things, they would hug each other and laugh freely.
When they talked about unhappy things, Wen Nuan would turn her head and ignore You Dai’er. You Dai’er could only coax her gently, then forcefully turn Wen Nuan back and hold her tight.
The sun was scorching, its heat falling on their bodies, scalding their two hearts into a tight embrace.
Wen Nuan raised her head with difficulty, wrapped her arms around You Dai’er’s neck, kissed the corner of her mouth, and panted, “…Dai’er?”
“Mhm.” You Dai’er endured the pain of being scorched, a smile on her face as she looked at her.
“…I love you.”
She froze, her eyes stinging. For the first time, You Dai’er knew what it felt like to cry.
It was sour and sweet, and she found it as sweet as malt sugar7.
“I love you too, Wen Nuan.”
Eternity is a vampire’s fate, but for You Dai’er, her fate was Ning Wen Nuan.
The little witch she had liked from the very first sight.
The system wiped away its tears and said reluctantly: 【Beep! The female lead’s blackening value has been cleared to zero. Unable to build a duplicate. The task-taker will now be stripped from the mission world. Please prepare.】
The two kissed passionately, holding each other tightly.
【One… two… three…. Stripping task-taker!】
The sunlight slowly shifted with the passing of time. On the table, the earrings shone with a dazzling light under the sun.
