Volume Nine: The Years I Was a Witch
Hungering Desire
Wen Nuan had grown up by her side and knew everything about You Dai’er crystal clear.
You Dai’er’s ability to learn was formidable; anything she had seen, eaten, or done, she could learn to replicate without the slightest error.
Wen Nuan was certain You Dai’er knew how to cook. Not only because she was her, but also because she had seen You Dai’er, out of boredom, try to make human food. Although she had thrown it away after a single bite, Wen Nuan had tasted You Dai’er’s cooking before, and it was delicious.
Seeing You Dai’er leave, Ding Nisheng quietly sidled up to Wen Nuan.
Wen Nuan watched the male lead wriggle toward her like a big grub and said helplessly, “What are you doing?”
Ding Nisheng looked toward the kitchen in terror. Although the conversation between the three of them just now had left him confused and afraid, when it came to a choice between You Dai’er and his own great-aunt, he still chose his great-aunt.
After all, even a vicious tiger won’t eat its own cubs1, and he and his great-aunt were related by blood.
“Great-aunt, you and that vampire… how did you end up together?” Ding Nisheng was so scared his voice cracked.
He lowered his voice, terrified the person in the kitchen would hear. “Great-aunt, are you being threatened by that vampire? Why don’t we find a chance and escape together…?”
Before he could finish, a kitchen knife flew out from the kitchen and embedded itself in the sofa right next to him.
Ding Nisheng: “…”
With tears in his eyes, he choked out, “Great-aunt, save me.”
Wen Nuan pressed a hand to her forehead, weary. She looked toward the kitchen. “I’m not leaving. You just focus on cooking.”
An especially haughty “Hmph” came from the kitchen, scaring Ding Nisheng so much that his tiger-like body trembled2.
Wen Nuan looked at the still-shaken male lead. “You can leave after you’ve eaten.”
“I can go?” Ding Nisheng said, pleasantly surprised. But then he had another thought. “Great-aunt, aren’t you coming with me?”
Wen Nuan shook her head. “No.”
“But that vampire is still…” Ding Nisheng carefully pointed at the kitchen, then mimed a tiger ripping out a heart3 and snapping a neck.
“It’s fine. She would hurt you, but she won’t hurt me.”
Seeing how certain Wen Nuan was, Ding Nisheng grew puzzled. “Why?”
“You were the one who personally sealed her away! You’re her enemy, how could she not hurt you?!”
The more he spoke, the more agitated his tone became, as if You Dai’er would fly out the very next second to snap their necks and drain their blood.
Ding Nisheng would never forget the people in the tour group who were killed by You Dai’er, not even left with a complete corpse.
Just as Wen Nuan was about to speak, she heard a resolute voice: “I can.”
You Dai’er walked out carrying a bowl of noodle soup, placed it gently in front of Wen Nuan, and repeated viciously to Ding Nisheng, “I can!”
Ding Nisheng: “…”
There was killing intent in the air.
He glanced at the seemingly weak Wen Nuan, and a surge of courage from who-knows-where rose in his heart. “You… you… you’re lying!”
You Dai’er raised her eyes, her fierce expression on full display. “What did you say?”
“…” The words were already out; there was no turning back.
Ding Nisheng silently scooted closer to Wen Nuan, his voice trembling. “I said you… you’re lying. You clearly know… my great-aunt was… the one who sealed you. How could you… possibly not… hurt her?”
Wen Nuan looked at You Dai’er with great interest. “I’d also like to know the reason. Why don’t you explain?”
You Dai’er: “…”
She frowned, looking particularly troubled. “I just won’t hurt her. There’s no reason.”
“No reason?” Ding Nisheng sensed that Wen Nuan was on his side and immediately found the courage to retort, “See, you are lying! You got close to my great-aunt just… just for revenge!”
You Dai’er’s gaze darkened. “I said I won’t hurt her.”
“Then give me a reason we can both trust and feel at ease with.”
Wen Nuan chimed in, “I’d like to hear it too.”
“…” You Dai’er looked helplessly at Wen Nuan. “Can you not keep interrupting with jokes and gags4?”
Wen Nuan shrugged. “I’m just curious…”
She raised a hand, pointed at You Dai’er, and smiled. “What’s your reason for not hurting me?”
You Dai’er froze. “…”
A reason.
How the hell would she know the reason? She just didn’t want to hurt Wen Nuan, what reason did she need?!
“What needs a reason?” You Dai’er retorted. “Does everything you do nowadays need a reason?”
Wen Nuan and Ding Nisheng nodded in unison. “Yes.”
You Dai’er ground her teeth. “…”
I fucking want to bite someone!
Bite… bite Ding Nisheng. Wen Nuan can’t take pain.
You Dai’er’s stare made Ding Nisheng’s heart tremble. He silently shifted closer to Wen Nuan again, afraid You Dai’er would fly into a rage and bite him.
The three of them fell silent for a moment.
Wen Nuan was the first to speak. “Let’s eat.”
She looked at the hot noodle soup on the table, then at Ding Nisheng. “Go to the kitchen and bring out the other two bowls. We’ll eat first, and then you should hurry home.”
Ding Nisheng replied, “Okay.”
“I only made one bowl,” You Dai’er said, looking at Ding Nisheng. “Are you worthy of eating it?”
Ding Nisheng’s lips formed a pout. “…”
Fine, he probably wasn’t.
“You only made one bowl?”
Wen Nuan could understand You Dai’er not wanting to cook for Ding Nisheng, but You Dai’er had just been crying out that she was hungry. Why did she only make one bowl of noodle soup?
She couldn’t possibly be thinking of taking a bite out of the male lead, could she?!
Wen Nuan looked at You Dai’er warily. “Then what are you eating?”
You Dai’er pointed at the noodle soup. “I’m eating this.”
“…” Wen Nuan was stunned. “Then what am I eating?”
“You’re eating this too,” You Dai’er smiled. “We’ll share one bowl.”
Ding Nisheng couldn’t help but ask, “What about me?”
You Dai’er’s expression changed in an instant, her face turning cold. “Go die.”
Ding Nisheng: “…”
He was truly just trying to survive here.
“You’re sharing with me,” Wen Nuan looked at the fried egg on top of the noodles and picked up her chopsticks to poke around. “There’s only one fried egg. How do we split it?”
“You eat the egg and the noodles. I’ll just have some of the broth.”
Although You Dai’er could eat human food, she didn’t like it.
Wen Nuan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Alright.”
Just as Wen Nuan was about to eat the noodles, You Dai’er spoke up to remind her, “Um… you might not be used to human food anymore.”
Before Wen Nuan could fully process You Dai’er’s warning, she took a bite of noodles. The moment she swallowed, a wave of nausea surged up from her stomach, and her face instantly turned pale.
Wen Nuan pushed Ding Nisheng out of her way, flashed directly to the bathroom, and a moment later, the sound of heart-wrenching vomiting could be heard.
“Blechhh—”
Ding Nisheng looked at the noodle soup. It smelled so fragrant, so why did his great-aunt have such a violent reaction after eating it?
“Is your cooking that bad?” he wondered aloud.
Hearing the vomiting from the bathroom, a trace of heartache crossed You Dai’er’s eyes. She sighed. “It’s not the noodles’ fault.”
“It’s not?” Ding Nisheng’s eyes darted around. “I’ll know once I try it.”
You Dai’er couldn’t be bothered with his little scheme and let him eat.
Ding Nisheng took a bite of the noodles, his eyes widening in shock. “Holy crap! This noodle soup is amazing!”
The broth was rich, the noodles were perfectly chewy; it was better than any noodle soup he’d ever had at a restaurant.
Then why did his great-aunt throw up so violently?
Could it be—
Ding Nisheng yelled toward the bathroom in astonishment, “Great-aunt, are you pregnant?”
Although it was impossible for his great-aunt to get pregnant at her age, given her powerful witch identity that allowed her to not only seal a vampire but also retain her youth, having a baby wasn’t out of the question.
Wen Nuan had no time to respond, able only to continue vomiting.
Hearing Ding Nisheng’s question, You Dai’er frowned. “Pregnant with what?”
Ding Nisheng, looking thrilled, said while slurping noodles, “Pregnant with a baby, of course.”
“Pregnant!?” You Dai’er roared.
You Dai’er’s reaction startled Ding Nisheng. “Wh-what’s wrong?”
You Dai’er strode forward, grabbed Ding Nisheng by the neck, her eyes turning red as she spoke with vicious intensity, “Who did you just say is pregnant?”
Ding Nisheng looked at the noodle soup that had been knocked to the floor, his heart aching.
His neck was squeezed tightly by You Dai’er. He opened his mouth wide and managed to say with difficulty, “…Great-aunt… is pregnant.”
Why are you getting so worked up?
Anyone would think the baby is yours.
With a savage expression, You Dai’er threw Ding Nisheng to the side and stormed toward the bathroom.
“Tell me!”
From the bathroom came a question filled with rage, excitement, pain, jealousy, disbelief, confusion, betrayal, and a hint of sorrow and anguish.
“Which man who doesn’t want to live is responsible for this child?!”
Ding Nisheng rubbed his bruised neck and looked at the fallen bowl of noodle soup. Seeing there was still some broth and noodles left, he crawled over in delight and started eating.
A satisfied smile appeared on his face as he said cheerfully, “So delicious.”
Wen Nuan was slumped weakly over the toilet. She felt as if she were about to vomit up her five viscera and six bowels5. Her body was growing weaker and weaker, and her mind was being constantly harassed and tormented by You Dai’er.
Right now, You Dai’er was like a crazed husky, jumping up and down in the bathroom, frantically demanding to know which dog man6 was responsible for the child in her belly.
Wen Nuan now felt the helplessness and heartache of coming home to find a husky had demolished the house7.
She stood up and rinsed her mouth.
Seeing that she was being ignored, and especially seeing Wen Nuan’s “none of your business” expression, the last nerve in You Dai’er’s brain snapped.
She pinned Wen Nuan against the sink, grabbing her by the neck, her eyes looking as if they would split open. “Tell me, who is that man?”
Wen Nuan gave You Dai’er a look that said, “Are you an idiot?” and sighed. “You Dai’er, when you woke up, did you leave your brain behind in the forbidden zone?”
You Dai’er saw that not only was Wen Nuan not explaining, but she even dared to curse at her to protect that man’s identity.
All reason gone, she roared in uncontrollable fury, “You’d curse at me for that man?!”
“…” Wen Nuan was tired. She was truly tired. “Ding Nisheng might not know why I’m throwing up, but you don’t know either?”
“Of course I know why you’re throwing up,” You Dai’er said, moving closer to Wen Nuan and grinding her teeth. “But I don’t know who the dog man that knocked you up is!”
“…”
Wen Nuan pointed at herself. “Who am I?”
You Dai’er answered without thinking, “Ning Wennuan, my little witch.”
A smile played on Wen Nuan’s lips. “I mean, what is my identity right now?”
“A witch,” You Dai’er paused. “No, wait, right now you’re… a vampire.”
Wen Nuan nodded. “And what did I just eat?”
“The noodles I made.”
“Then take a guess why I threw up.”
You Dai’er said without a second thought, “Because when a vampire eats human food, it causes a severe rejection reaction, leading to vomiting, to expel the human food…”
Before she could finish, the air suddenly froze.
A heavy sense of awkwardness and embarrassment gradually filled the small bathroom.
You Dai’er’s sanity returned. The blood-red in her eyes faded, replaced by chagrin and shame.
She shrank into a corner of the bathroom, as if trying her best to become invisible to escape Wen Nuan’s gaze.
“Are you done with your fit?”
You Dai’er shook her head.
“Has your sanity returned?”
You Dai’er nodded.
“Can you understand human speech now?”
You Dai’er paused, then nodded awkwardly.
“I’m hungry.” Wen Nuan rubbed her stomach, which was rumbling.
You Dai’er said in a low, aggrieved voice, “But you can’t eat the food I make.”
Wen Nuan’s gaze fell on You Dai’er’s fair, clean neck. Ever since she had become a vampire, all of her physical senses had become much sharper.
She could almost see the fresh blood pulsing within that white neck, tempting her.
Wen Nuan walked toward You Dai’er, her tone light. “You made a mistake. Shouldn’t you accept your punishment?”
You Dai’er thought Wen Nuan meant for her to go to the Hunting Bureau for punishment and retorted, “But I didn’t kill anyone.”
She had wanted to drink Ding Nisheng’s blood, but Wen Nuan hadn’t allowed it, so she hadn’t touched him.
“I’m not sending you to the Hunting Bureau. Instead, it’ll be a different kind of punishment.” Wen Nuan braced her hands on the wall, trapping You Dai’er in her arms. “I will be the one to punish you.”
Wen Nuan pressed tightly against her. Of their two bodies, one was cold, the other hot.
You Dai’er felt Wen Nuan’s heat, wondering why her body was still as warm as ever when she had already become a vampire.
“What punishment?”
You Dai’er liked Wen Nuan being this close to her. She could feel Wen Nuan’s warmth and scent seeping into her heart, strand by strand.
Wen Nuan tilted her head, her gaze landing on You Dai’er’s lips. A trace of regret flashed in her eyes before she looked at her neck and said softly, “I’m hungry.”
You Dai’er was about to repeat what she had said before when she saw Wen Nuan lower her head, her lips pressing against her neck.
“I want to eat… you, Dai’er.”
In that instant, You Dai’er felt herself nod; she could hear her own consent.
Her slender neck was bitten in an instant. You Dai’er could clearly feel her blood being sucked and drawn out.
A strong arm wrapped tightly around her waist, making her tremble from the heat. The forceful action seemed to be telling her that escape was not permitted.
You Dai’er went limp in Wen Nuan’s arms, her neck arched high.
Her lips parted slightly, unable to suppress a moan.
Wen Nuan was like an insatiable beast, biting her prey all over.
And her prey willingly submitted, offering up its life.
Outside the door, Ding Nisheng was slurping his noodles when he heard a strange sound coming from the bathroom. He looked down at the noodles in his bowl.
Eating was still the most important thing.
The author has something to say:
Xu Yuan: I hear there’s someone here who can compete with me?
Ding Nisheng: This noodle soup is so good.
