Volume Nine: The Years I Was a Witch
The First Embrace
【Blackening Value has decreased. The female lead’s current Blackening Value is 7.1!】 the system said in pleasant surprise.
Wen Nuan’s brow twitched. She hadn’t expected You Xi to do her such a huge favor. She had been wondering when she could make You Dai’er realize her feelings for her were different, and now You Xi had pointed it out directly, which in turn had prompted the drop in You Dai’er’s Blackening Value.
What a great assist.
Seeing You Dai’er’s delayed response, You Xi said mockingly, “My dear sister, you haven’t actually fallen for Ning Wen Nuan, have you?”
You Dai’er’s expression grew even uglier.
He pressed on relentlessly, “Have you forgotten what Ning Wen Nuan did to you?”
“She betrayed you to work with me, joining forces with dozens of witches to seal you away for forty years. You aren’t planning to let it all vanish like smoke and disperse like clouds1, are you?”
Wen Nuan nearly rolled her eyes. She hadn’t expected the same words to sound so different coming out of You Xi’s mouth.
Just a moment ago, he was trying every trick in the book to win her over, and now, to make You Dai’er lower her guard, he was starting to accuse her of wrongdoing?!
“This is between her and me. What butt-business is it of yours?” You Dai’er shot him a sideways glance. “Let her go, and I’ll leave you a whole corpse.”2
You Xi laughed out loud at her words. “Sister, you were sealed for forty years. Your strength must be far from what it once was. What makes you think the one left with a whole corpse between us will be me?”
His eyes darted. “How about we cooperate? I can let Wen Nuan go, but you have to do your big brother a favor.”
You Dai’er naturally knew what You Xi wanted to say, and she refused him outright. “I have no interest in reviving the vampire race. You can go blindly play with your dick3 by yourself.”
You Xi knew You Dai’er would refuse him. He kicked Wen Nuan and clamped his hands around her head, a faint smile on his face. “Sister, are you sure you won’t reconsider your big brother’s proposal?”
“You fucking…!” You Dai’er’s brows furrowed in anger.
Wen Nuan’s arms had been broken by You Xi and hung limply at her sides. With her head held fast by him, she could only watch You Dai’er’s conflicted and helpless expression.
“Well?” You Xi tightened his grip, and a crisp crack of bone sounded from Wen Nuan’s neck. “How’s the consideration coming along? Big brother doesn’t have much patience.”
“Why are you looking for me?” You Dai’er asked anxiously.
You Xi paused. “You are my biological sister, after all. My feelings for you are naturally deep. If we work together to create the golden age of vampires like in the old days, wouldn’t that be wonderful?”
“If you had any feelings for You Dai’er,” Wen Nuan sneered, “you wouldn’t have agreed to work with me back then.”
You Xi’s expression froze. Seeing the scrutinizing gaze You Dai’er sent his way, he hastily explained, “Back then, Ning Wen Nuan deliberately tempted me with her blood. Big brother couldn’t resist her temptation for a moment, which is why I moved against you.”
You Dai’er’s gaze darkened. “You actually drank her blood?!”
She looked at Wen Nuan, her tone unfriendly. “You let him drink your blood?”
You Xi: “…”
Is that the main point here?
Wen Nuan said speechlessly, “Who told you to be so strong back then? I had to find someone to wear down your strength so I could seal you, didn’t I?”
You Dai’er was genuinely angry. “You actually let him drink your blood?!”
You Xi: “…”
Hey, is that what we’re talking about right now?
Wen Nuan tried her best to explain. “It’s all because you were too powerful. How could I seal you without finding an ally? Why do you care about such a trivial matter?”
“This is a trivial matter?” You Dai’er took a deep breath. “Someone besides me has drunk your blood? How could you do this to me?”
You Xi: “…”
I’m so tired.
Wen Nuan retorted sharply, “Why shouldn’t a second person drink my blood? I’m not your property. Why are you being so controlling?”
Flames shot up three zhang4 from You Dai’er. “I raised you! Only I can drink your blood! You are my property. Your body, your blood, everything about you is mine.”
You Xi: “…”
There are other vampires here, you know. Could you two stop fighting?
We need to discuss important business.
“I am not your property! I belong to myself!” Wen Nuan roared.
You Dai’er refused to show weakness. “You are my property. You just are.”
“I am not.”
“You are.”
“I am not.”
“You are.”
…
The blue veins on his forehead jumped5 as You Xi yelled, exasperated, “…You fucking…”
His expression suddenly changed. He looked down nervously at the hand that had snaked around his neck and gritted his teeth. “You did it on purpose!”
The corner of You Dai’er’s mouth curled up as she gripped his neck. “Your brain really isn’t what it used to be, to be fooled by such clumsy acting from Wen Nuan and me.”
Wen Nuan distanced herself from the claim. “I wasn’t acting. Every word I said was the truth.”
You Dai’er: “…”
You Xi: “…”
He just wanted to ask, is that the fucking point right now?!
You Dai’er didn’t bicker with Wen Nuan. She tightened her grip on You Xi’s neck and threatened, “Let Wen Nuan go, or this old master will crush your head.”
The other vampires were about to step forward to help, but they saw You Dai’er glare at them fiercely. Their legs felt as if they were bound, rooted to the spot and unable to move.
“Sister, brother just wants to cooperate with you. I have no hostility towards you,” You Xi said, holding his hands up.
“Is that so?” Wen Nuan stood up and looked at You Xi questioningly.
You Xi’s eyes narrowed, then he smiled. “I just want our vampire race to no longer be suppressed by humans. What’s wrong with that?”
“Then you can go realize your grand ambitions on your own. Why do you have to drag You Dai’er, who despises you, into it?”
You Xi explained, “I’ve already said it. She’s my sister. As a big brother, it’s only natural to think of one’s sister when there are benefits to be had.”
Wen Nuan scoffed. “Benefits? There are benefits for you, but they might not necessarily be benefits for her.”
Just as You Xi was about to speak, Wen Nuan forcefully cut him off. “You two are twins. You clearly possess the same bloodline, both Third-generation Vampire Progenitors, yet the difference in your strengths is like that between heaven and earth.”
A shadow fell over You Xi’s face.
She looked at the two of them—similar faces, yet different fates.
“That’s because you were once cursed by an evil witch. Even though you later killed that evil witch to break the curse, you suddenly discovered that the damage from the curse was irreversible. You will forever be inferior to You Dai’er, and your life will no longer be eternal. Your body will grow weaker and weaker, and eventually, you will be devoured by other vampires.”
Ever since 《The Covenant》 was enacted, humans had restricted the desires of vampires. They could collect blood from blood banks, but that blood was processed, not fresh, and drinking it couldn’t suppress the desires that grew stronger by the day. So, they began to feed on the blood of their own kind to alleviate their growing desires and emptiness.
High-level vampires hunted low-level vampires.
Powerful vampires slaughtered weak vampires.
And when a vampire died suddenly, humans would just assume it was internal strife. They ignored the rising death toll among vampires and would happily enjoy its completion;6 perhaps if the vampires continued their infighting, this filthy species that could only hide in the darkness would be completely exterminated.
The humans’ abacus beads were clicking loudly7, while the vampires hidden in the shadows were waiting for an opportunity.
But You Xi couldn’t wait. He was running out of time.
He needed You Dai’er to awaken to save his already precarious life.
“You and You Dai’er share the same bloodline. If you were to devour her, you could surely break the irreversible damage the curse has brought you. You could also continue to enjoy eternity, and your strength would soar. At that point, you would completely shatter the current situation and make the vampire clan the masters of the world.”
Wen Nuan watched You Xi’s face gradually twist into a grimace and said faintly, “Am I right? You Xi.”
You Dai’er never imagined You Xi would set his sights on her. At first, she thought he had grand ambitions, but in the end, it was all for himself.
She tightened her grip on You Xi’s neck and said viciously, “You really are something. Your skill is high and your guts are big, huh?!”8
“You’ve guessed everything correctly, but so what?” He looked at the surrounding vampires, a bloody light flashing in his eyes. “Since I dared to do it, I’m not afraid of you figuring it out.”
Ignoring the threat at his neck, You Xi let a syringe fall from his sleeve and stabbed it viciously into You Dai’er’s thigh. “Might as well smash a pot that is already cracked.”9
“Was your head kicked by a donkey?”10 You Dai’er was so angry at You Xi’s attack she laughed. “Forty years, and you’re still as stupid as…”
You Dai’er’s body went numb, and she suddenly collapsed to the ground. She said in disbelief, “This is…?”
“This is the blood of an evil witch. While it can’t kill you, it can make you behave,” You Xi said, looking at Wen Nuan. “After I drain Wen Nuan’s blood, I’ll come kill you.”
You Dai’er tried to get up, but the foreign blood in her body made her unable to move. She couldn’t even breathe; her whole body was stiff, and her eyes were glazed over.
The blood of an evil witch was poison to low-level vampires, but for high-level vampires, it was a suppressant.
“Don’t you touch her,” You Dai’er roared with great effort. “If you have a problem, come at me!”
You Xi pursed his lips. “I never thought I’d hear you say that. Tsk tsk, live long enough and you really do see everything.”
He scoffed. “Don’t worry, sister. After I’m done with Wen Nuan, I’ll come for you, ‘kay?”
Wen Nuan watched the collapsed You Dai’er as You Xi approached her step by step.
She shrugged her shoulders, setting her broken bones back into place. “What is my blood to you people?”
You Xi licked his lips and said, “The absolute finest.”
Wen Nuan smiled sweetly. “If you drank my blood, would you be able to recover your strength?”
You Xi didn’t know why Wen Nuan was asking this, but he was happy to answer. “Naturally. Your blood is even more delicious and pure than that of other vampires, or even that of a virgin.”
The purer the blood, the more it helped vampires increase their strength. If You Xi drained Wen Nuan, he would definitely be able to restore his power to a level where he could rival You Dai’er.
“That’s good. Thank you for answering my question.”
You Xi was surprised by Wen Nuan’s thanks. His vision blurred for an instant, and by the time he came to his senses, Wen Nuan was already by You Dai’er’s side.
You Xi was shocked. “What are you doing?”
He flew forward but was blocked by an invisible wall. The other vampires couldn’t pass through it either.
Ignoring You Xi’s furious roars, Wen Nuan picked up You Dai’er, grabbed a rock from the ground, and slashed it viciously across her own neck.
Instantly, fresh blood gushed out.
The sweet, fragrant aroma of the blood drove every vampire present into a frenzy.
You Dai’er’s eyes widened. Forcibly suppressing her desire, she said with difficulty, “What… are you doing?”
Wen Nuan held her tight, pressing her head to her neck. The blood loss was making her weak. “Drink it. Kill You Xi. That guy is so noisy.”
Hearing Wen Nuan’s words, You Dai’er could no longer resist the temptation of her blood. Her fangs pierced viciously into Wen Nuan’s neck.
Wen Nuan couldn’t withstand the massive blood loss and fainted. The spell holding back the vampires vanished along with her consciousness.
You Dai’er drank her fill. Looking at Wen Nuan’s pale face, she laid her on the ground.
She licked the fresh blood from the corner of her mouth, her pupils radiating a sharp light. “Game Over.”
You Xi tried to flee, but he couldn’t escape You Dai’er’s murderous intent. He was torn into four parts and five pieces11 by You Dai’er, unable to regenerate.
The remaining vampires were deader than dead.12
You Dai’er let out a long breath. She turned to pick up Wen Nuan but couldn’t feel her heartbeat.
She panicked. “Wen… Wen Nuan?”
The person in her arms was lifeless, her body temperature rapidly turning cold, just like a corpse.
You Dai’er’s hands trembled, unable to believe Wen Nuan was dead.
The person in her arms suddenly began to tremble violently. You Dai’er held Wen Nuan’s body tightly.
Until the shaking stopped.
A sharp gasp startled the frantic You Dai’er.
Wen Nuan slowly opened her eyes. A pair of blood-red eyes, identical to You Dai’er’s, met her gaze.
She opened her mouth, and sharp fangs instantly came into You Dai’er’s view.
Looking at You Dai’er’s panicked and helpless expression, Wen Nuan cursed weakly, “You Dai’er, you fucking…”
