When the Female Lead Becomes Obsessive – Chapter 198

Volume Nine: The Years I Was a Witch

Ambush

Wen Nuan watched the door open. You Dai’er rushed in, bringing a blast of cold air with her that made Wen Nuan’s brow furrow.

Seeing her frown, You Dai’er’s heart skipped a beat.

She sniffed herself and muttered under her breath, “I washed up pretty well, didn’t I? Is there still a smell of blood?”

Wen Nuan’s ears twitched, but she pretended not to hear.

She raised a hand to her forehead, the corners of her mouth turning up slightly. “Where did you just go?”

“Just taking out some trash. Nothing important.”

You Dai’er didn’t want to scare Wen Nuan. It was better that she had dealt with those scumbags herself.

Wen Nuan lifted her hand. You Dai’er instinctively dodged, afraid Wen Nuan was about to hit her with a spell.

“…” Wen Nuan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She crooked a finger. “Don’t be scared. I’m not going to hit you. Come here.”

You Dai’er was a little embarrassed, but she put on a brave face. “You can’t beat me anyway, so who’s afraid of you? I was just worried you’d sneak-attack me, like that time in the kitchen.”

She walked over and glanced at Wen Nuan’s hands—slender and long, with well-defined knuckles, as fair as jade.

“What are you doing?”

You Dai’er was still worried Wen Nuan was going to pull a fast one on her.

Wen Nuan wiggled her fingers.

You Dai’er slowly got the hint and put her own hand out, her voice laced with nervousness. “…What for?”

Wen Nuan took hold of her icy fingertips. “The water in Xishan Stream is very cold at night. Now that it’s early autumn, the temperature can even drop below zero.”

You Dai’er’s fingers trembled in her grasp. “…Wha-what?”

“You went to the stream in the woods?”

“How did you know?” You Dai’er asked, astonished.

Her body temperature never changed; it was always ice-cold.

“I can feel the dampness,” Wen Nuan said, the pad of her thumb stroking from You Dai’er’s fingertips to her palm. “Did you bathe in the stream?”

The feeling of that thumb on her palm left You Dai’er a bit dazed. She paused. “Huh? …Yeah.”

“Why did you bathe in the stream?” Wen Nuan asked deliberately, cupping her hand completely. “Why not come back here to wash up?”

You Dai’er raised an eyebrow. She’d never realized Wen Nuan’s hands were bigger than hers. They enveloped her own, the warmth from that palm melting her chill.

“I got a nasty smell on me while I was taking out the trash. If I came back to wash, you’d just lecture me again,” You Dai’er said, a hint of complaint in her tone.

She was doing it on purpose, hoping Wen Nuan would reflect on her own unreasonable tyranny.

“Afraid I’ll lecture you?”

“I’m not afraid,” You Dai’er said, though she couldn’t quite explain why. “I just hate it when you’re angry with me.”

Whenever Wen Nuan got angry and pushed her away, You Dai’er would get so agitated she felt like killing someone.

It also made her feel awful inside, like she was being pricked by countless tiny needles.

She looked at her hand being warmed by Wen Nuan’s and asked tentatively, “You’re warming me up, right?”

Wen Nuan nodded. “Mhm.”

You Dai’er smiled. “Why are you suddenly being so nice to me?”

They had been fighting and arguing for the past few days. This sudden kindness made You Dai’er feel a little guilty.

“You abided by the Covenant1 and accepted your punishment,” Wen Nuan said with a faint smile. “This is, you could say, your reward.”

It wasn’t that You Dai’er had never seen Wen Nuan smile, but most of her smiles were forced, fake, cold, or sarcastic. More often than not, they were filled with hatred.

Seeing such a gentle smile now, You Dai’er felt an indescribable sensation in her heart.

If she had to describe it, You Dai’er thought it was like eating a piece of sweet fruit candy.

Her smile made You Dai’er’s heart itch. She held out her other hand. “Warm this one up, too.”

Wen Nuan wrapped both of her hands together.

You Dai’er got an inch and advanced a foot2, leaning her whole body in close. “It wasn’t just my hands I washed. I washed my whole body. Why don’t you help me warm all of it up?”

Wen Nuan didn’t move. She just lifted her eyelids and looked at You Dai’er.

You Dai’er froze, then pouted. “I was just kidding. If you don’t want to, then don’t…”

Her eyes widened in disbelief as Wen Nuan pulled her into an embrace.

With an arm around her waist, You Dai’er felt her body go soft, melting into Wen Nuan’s arms.

Wen Nuan looked at You Dai’er’s golden hair, her eyes flickered, and she stood up, pushing her away.

“There.”

You Dai’er was stunned. “That’s… it?”

Did they even hug for a full second?

She hadn’t even gotten to hug back before Wen Nuan pushed her away.

Was this any way to fool a vampire?

Wen Nuan yawned. “I’m sleepy. Good night.”

“Hey!” You Dai’er followed after her. “I’m still cold!”

“That’s because you’re naturally cold.”

“I’m still damp, too!”

“Go dry yourself by the fireplace.”

“I’m a vampire. I’m afraid of fire.”

Light and fire were things vampires feared from the bottom of their hearts.

Wen Nuan walked into the bedroom and lay down on the bed. “You’re not afraid. I know.”

You Dai’er was about to argue when Wen Nuan spoke again. “When I was eight, I didn’t want you to bite me anymore, so I locked myself in my room. You were too lazy to break down the door, so you set a fire to force me out.”

You Dai’er’s expression stiffened.

“I refused to come out, even if it meant dying. So you stepped into the room engulfed in flames, dragged me out, and bit me hard. No matter how much I cried or begged for mercy, you wouldn’t let go.”

Wen Nuan looked at her coldly. “Have you forgotten?”

You Dai’er: “…”

She seemed to have quite a bit of dark history.

You Dai’er followed Wen Nuan upstairs and watched her lie quietly on the bed, her face peaceful, free of the tension and panic that used to be so common.

“You’ve really changed a lot.”

Or perhaps Wen Nuan had always been this way, and had just been hiding her true self before.

Wen Nuan closed her eyes and said faintly, “Mhm. I’ve gotten old.”

“…” You Dai’er choked. “I didn’t say you were old.”

“It’s a fact,” Wen Nuan said, turning her head to look at You Dai’er standing by the bed. “I’m already fifty-five. In human years, half my body is already in the ground3.”

You Dai’er felt a pang of discomfort. “Then I’ll give you the First Embrace4.”

“I don’t want it.”

“But you’ll die!” You Dai’er couldn’t control her tone, which grew heavier.

“Birth, aging, sickness, and death—isn’t that the natural order of the world?”

She lowered her gaze. “I may be a witch, but I’m still human. And being human means you can’t escape life and death.”

You Dai’er clenched her fists, then flashed forward and pinned Wen Nuan to the bed.

She bared her sharp fangs, her eyes as dark as ink as she stared down at Wen Nuan.

Wen Nuan remained still, looking up at You Dai’er above her.

You Dai’er bit her own wrist and brought the bleeding wound close. Wen Nuan turned her head, and the fresh blood dripped onto her neck.

“Drink it!”

She would not allow her little witch to die.

Wen Nuan didn’t look at her, her voice laced with exhaustion. “I don’t want to become a vampire.”

“Then you’ll die,” You Dai’er said, grabbing her chin, intending to force the blood down her throat. “I won’t allow you to die.”

“If you dare give me the First Embrace, I will hate you for the rest of my life.” Wen Nuan looked directly at her, the hatred in her eyes stabbing straight into You Dai’er’s heart.

She was serious.

If she really gave Wen Nuan the First Embrace, Wen Nuan would truly hate her for an eternity.

A sense of loss washed over You Dai’er. She didn’t want Wen Nuan to die.

But if she gave her the First Embrace, Wen Nuan’s hatred for her would be eternal.

“Are you trying to use death to escape me?” You Dai’er gnashed her teeth.

“Not at all,” Wen Nuan said. “If I wanted to use death to escape you, I could kill myself at any time.”

She smiled. “Don’t underestimate a witch.”

“True. You’re a witch. You can kill yourself whenever you want. So…” You Dai’er’s eyes turned vicious, and a bloody crimson instantly stained them. “…you might as well just hate me.”

You Dai’er took a mouthful of blood and kissed Wen Nuan.

Wen Nuan bit her lip hard, but You Dai’er dislocated her jaw, and her tongue forced the mouthful of blood down her throat.

“Wen Nuan…”

You Dai’er’s hand clamped around her throat, cutting off her breath. Wen Nuan’s eyes flew open as she stared at You Dai’er, but her vision gradually blurred.

In a daze, she heard You Dai’er whisper in her ear.

“But… I can’t bear… for you to leave me.”

“Hah…”

Wen Nuan gasped and woke with a start.

She immediately felt her own teeth.

Seeing her panic, the System explained: 【Don’t be afraid. The female lead didn’t give you the First Embrace.】

【But her blackening value did increase a little.】

Wen Nuan breathed a sigh of relief. She still remembered You Dai’er forcing blood down her throat and choking her before she passed out, attempting to kill her to complete the First Embrace ritual.

But You Dai’er didn’t go through with it?!

Wen Nuan touched her neck and murmured, “That’s not like her.”

【When I saw the female lead about to strangle you, I was so scared my heart almost burst.】 The System was still shaken.

“Where is she?”

Wen Nuan was still in the bedroom, but You Dai’er was gone.

【She went out, but I don’t know where.】 The System couldn’t keep an eye on the female lead; it could only follow Wen Nuan.

Wen Nuan got out of bed, but a wave of soreness and weakness washed over her, and she collapsed helplessly to the floor.

The System was startled. 【What’s wrong with you?】

“Scan my body.”

Wen Nuan’s body felt sore and weak, as if she’d been brutally beaten.

【Okay.】 The System immediately scanned her body. 【Holy crap, you have You Dai’er’s blood in your system. It’s rejecting your witch bloodline, which is why you’re sore and weak all over.】

Wen Nuan pushed herself up against the wall. “What are the effects?”

【All harm, no good,】 the System explained. 【But it’s fine. You didn’t drink much, so the effect isn’t huge. It’ll be okay once the female lead’s blood is slowly diluted.】

“How long?”

The System calculated. 【A week at the fastest, a month at the slowest. It depends on your physical constitution.】

Wen Nuan’s constitution in this world was terrible, so it would probably take some time to dilute You Dai’er’s blood.

“Okay.”

Wen Nuan slowly walked downstairs but saw no sign of You Dai’er.

The phone on the table rang. It was a WeChat message from Ai Wen.

【Miss Ning, please be careful these next few days. The vampire community has violated the Covenant multiple times, deliberately drinking human blood and harming humans. The situation is out of control. You must be extra careful and go out as little as possible.】

Wen Nuan didn’t reply to Ai Wen. Instead, she opened the front door and looked at the vampires surrounding her house.

The vampire in the lead, a man with deep green eyes and shoulder-length brown hair, looked at Wen Nuan. His hooked nose gave him a fierce air.

“Witch Ning, we’ve heard you’re incredibly powerful, that you sealed our third-generation Progenitor. Now that our Progenitor has awakened, isn’t it time we settled some old scores?”

Bill stared intently at Wen Nuan, and the other vampires grew vigilant.

Before You Dai’er was sealed, vampires were the masters of the world. They had never been oppressed by humans like this. They had to abide by the Covenant to suppress their desires, and if they couldn’t control themselves, they would be sanctioned by the Hunting Bureau.

They had had enough.

Now that the third-generation Progenitor had awakened, it was time for the age of vampires to return!

Wen Nuan scanned the group. “Where’s You Dai’er?”

“With the Progenitor around, it’s hard for us to make a move,” Bill said, a vicious glint in his eyes. “I don’t know what kind of spell you put on her that’s allowed you to survive by her side for so long.”

“Since the Progenitor can’t bring herself to kill you, why don’t we do it for her?” Bill pulled out a handgun and aimed it at Wen Nuan.

Wen Nuan raised an eyebrow. “You vampires use handguns to kill people now?”

Bill toyed with the gun. “We just need a little favor from the witch after she’s dead.”

“A favor?” Wen Nuan sneered. “Lure You Dai’er away, kill me using human methods to stir up conflict between humans and witches, and make You Dai’er hunt humans for revenge. Is that it?”

Bill wasn’t surprised she knew. He smiled. “Witches are very smart. But smart people don’t live long.”

He saw that Wen Nuan was still inside the house. They couldn’t get in, but they would force her to come out on her own.

“Light it up.”

Wen Nuan had smelled the gasoline long ago. The vampires set her house ablaze, and huge waves of fire dyed the sky red.

Just as they wished, Wen Nuan walked out of the house.

In an instant, killing intent lurked on all four sides5.

You Dai’er looked at Carter, who had once served her, and frowned slightly. “How did you know I was here?”

Carter knelt on the ground, speaking respectfully. “Progenitor, ever since you awakened, I guessed that you would come looking for Wen Nuan, so I waited here for you specifically.”

You Dai’er’s feelings for Carter were neutral, but she hadn’t expected him to be so loyal and persistent.

“What are you waiting for me for?”

Carter raised his voice. “Ever since the Progenitor was sealed, we vampires have been suppressed at every turn. Now that you have awakened, you can certainly lead the vampires to see the light of day again and return to the days when we were respected and feared by all.”

“I’m not interested.”

You Dai’er had no time to restore the vampires’ former glory. She hadn’t even figured out her own affairs yet.

However, she supposed she should thank Carter. If not for him, she really might have impulsively given Wen Nuan the First Embrace.

Wen Nuan would have definitely lost it with her then.

“I don’t want to get involved in the conflict between you and the humans, nor can I be bothered,” You Dai’er said, her eyes narrowing. “I don’t care how you all play your games, but if you drag me into it, the consequences will be more than you can bear.”

Seeing You Dai’er’s refusal, Carter said urgently, “Progenitor, we have waited forty years for you. The vampire race has been suppressed all this time. Now that you have awakened, how can you allow humans to climb all over you?”

You Dai’er couldn’t be bothered to listen to Carter’s nonsense. She turned to leave, but seeing him block her path, a chill entered her expression. “On account of your past service to me, I’ll allow you this one impertinence. If you cross the line again, I’ll kill you.”

“Progenitor, the bigger picture is what’s important,” Carter said, his tone hardening.

You Dai’er’s expression darkened. She lunged forward and grabbed Carter by the throat, her brow furrowed. “Are you threatening me?”

“Who gave you the…”

You Dai’er clutched her chest. A heart-wrenching pain stole her breath.

Carter looked at You Dai’er in surprise. “Progenitor, what’s wrong?”

She looked toward the thick smoke rising in the distance, her eyes filled with panic and alarm. “Wen… Wen Nuan?”
