Volume Nine: The Years I Was a Witch
Humanity
The female lead of the original story, You Dai’er1, was a cruel, ruthless, and utterly inhuman third-generation vampire progenitor.2
In the original plot, she met the male lead for the first time and, thinking his blood was delicious, made him her blood servant3. She would even casually let other vampires toy with him. In the end, unable to bear the humiliation, the male lead chose to perish together with the female lead, causing the world to collapse.
The mission Wen Nuan was sent to this world to complete was rather special: its main objective was to maintain the world’s stability.
Her original intention was to start with the male lead, keeping him away from the female lead so they could never meet. That way, she could stabilize this mission world.
But something went wrong along the way. She met the female lead first and, due to the unique nature of her blood and identity, became the female lead’s blood servant.
Forty years ago, Wen Nuan gathered forty-nine witches to seal the female lead away. She also managed to stimulate the small bit of humanity the vampire possessed. With the constraints of humanity, even if the male and female leads accidentally crossed paths, the male lead wouldn’t be killed outright by her, allowing the world to develop stably.
This was the world Wen Nuan had left with the most peace of mind, but also the most anguish. If she could do it all over again, the last thing she would want is to meet the female lead first.
“Long time no see, my little witch.”
Now, they had met again.
And in this mission world, wasn’t it all just a competition of who was more ruthless?
Wen Nuan lifted her eyelids, her voice flat. “I’d rather not see you.”
The corner of You Dai’er’s mouth quirked up. “Has my little witch grown distant from me?”
“One is the vampire who killed my parents, the other is the witch who sealed you away. How could there be any familiarity to speak of?”
As Wen Nuan recalled the gruesome scene of her parents’ deaths, a trace of grief surfaced in her complex gaze.
You Dai’er saw the emotion in her eyes and frowned slightly. “Doesn’t that make us even?”
“You’re not dead. How does that count as even?” Wen Nuan gave a sarcastic smile.
“Little witch, do you want to kill me that badly?” You Dai’er raised a hand to wipe the fresh blood from the corner of her mouth, a look of sorrow on her face. “I raised you, after all. Do you hate me that much?”
“If you didn’t think my blood was so delicious, I’m afraid I would’ve died with my parents long ago, wouldn’t I?”
You Dai’er grinned. “My little witch is just so clever. I like it.”
“I was sealed by you for forty years. Right now, what I want to drink most is your blood.”
Wen Nuan looked at her coolly. “You don’t want to kill me?”
You Dai’er nodded. “I want to kill you, too. How about I just drain you dry?”
“Fine.” Wen Nuan took a step back, looking at You Dai’er outside the door. “Then give it a try.”
Vampires cannot enter a house without an invitation from the owner.
The laws of the world really came in handy sometimes.
Seeing Wen Nuan’s defiant expression, You Dai’er sat down on the front steps, leaned against the railing, and looked at her with a laugh. “Alright then, I’ll wait for you right here at your door.”
Wen Nuan pulled over a cushion and sat opposite her. “You didn’t kill Ding Nisheng so you could find me, right?”
“Indeed. Who else is to blame but my little witch for being so skilled that I couldn’t find you?”
You Dai’er had placed a blood pact4 inside Wen Nuan. Later, when she was sealed, she felt the connection between them grow weaker and weaker, until it vanished.
For a blood pact to disappear, either one of the parties had died, or someone had broken it.
You Dai’er never considered that Wen Nuan might have died, because her little witch was very powerful. So, she must have been the one to dissolve the blood pact.
Later, someone awakened her. Newly revived, she was ravenously hungry and drained several humans to sate her hunger, but she hadn’t expected one person’s blood to be so similar to her little witch’s.
Though the taste was inferior to her little witch’s, You Dai’er still took a few sips to tide her over.
She hypnotized the man and entered his mind but found no trace of her little witch. However, she was certain this man had to be related to her by blood. So, she deliberately left a bite mark on his neck to have him lead her to her little witch.
And sure enough——
Everything went as she wished. You Dai’er found her little witch.
The moment she saw her, a strange feeling surged through You Dai’er’s heart.
She wanted to kill her little witch, because she had betrayed her, colluding with outsiders to seal her away.
She wanted to drain every drop of her blood, even eat her flesh and blood, to show her the consequences of betrayal.
She wanted her to beg for mercy, to be afraid, to know she had done wrong.
She thought that if her little witch apologized, it wasn’t as if she couldn’t forgive her.
But——
You Dai’er propped up one leg, resting her right hand on her knee. She tilted her head to look at the little witch, whose face was even paler than her own, and felt a pang of heartache.
“You don’t look so good.”
“Just tired,” Wen Nuan said faintly.
“Then you should sleep. I can’t come in.”
“Okay.” Wen Nuan got up, preparing to go upstairs to bed.
“Can’t you sleep here?”
Wen Nuan turned, looking at her in confusion. “What?”
You Dai’er blinked. “I want to watch you sleep. Isn’t that how it always was? We used to sleep together.”
Wen Nuan gave a cold laugh. “We slept together because I could keep you warm, and you could bite me and drink my blood whenever you wanted.”
You Dai’er raised an eyebrow. “You’re naturally warm-bodied, and I’m ice-cold. It was a perfect fit. And though I bit you to drink your blood, I never drained you dry, and I never hurt you, did I?”
Her little witch used to be so docile, letting her hold her and drink from her. Incredibly obedient.
Not cold like she was now.
Wen Nuan crossed her arms. “Your body is as cold as ice. When I held you, my teeth would chatter from the chill. When you bit me to drink my blood, your sharp fangs pierced my throat, and the pain made my whole body tremble. The only reason I endured it without a word was because I was afraid you’d kill me, and I was also afraid you’d throw me to other vampires to be toyed with.”
You Dai’er paused. It was a moment of revelation. “So that’s how it was.”
“No wonder you want to kill me,” she said, suddenly enlightened.
“No.”
You Dai’er was puzzled. “What do you mean, no?”
“It’s not because of those things that I want to kill you. It’s because you killed my parents.” Her voice was neither loud nor soft, yet it left an unexpected mark on You Dai’er’s heart.
You Dai’er frowned and touched her chest, which felt a little heavy.
Something was wrong.
Ever since she’d awakened, she’d been having many emotions she never had before. So strange.
“But did you know? Your parents didn’t die unjustly.” You Dai’er wiped the blood from her fingertips on her clothes. “Although your parents were very good to you, they hunted vampires and performed many cruel experiments on them, all to find out how to kill us. Do you think we would tolerate that?”
Wen Nuan closed her eyes. She knew what her parents had done, and of course she knew vampires wouldn’t tolerate such behavior.
So it was her own greed, her attachment to that brief period of parental love.
Seeing the desolate and helpless look on Wen Nuan’s face, You Dai’er’s heart suddenly lurched.
“So…” Wen Nuan said calmly, “I invite you in.”
You Dai’er’s pupils widened. She could feel that the house was now permitting her entry.
But she didn’t enter. Instead, she stood at the doorway and looked at Wen Nuan. “Why?”
Wen Nuan spread her hands. “Like you said, my parents wronged your kind, so you killed them. I sealed you for revenge, so you should kill me. The grudge between us should end here.”
She smiled, looking somewhat relieved. “My health is getting worse anyway, and I don’t want to live anymore. It’s perfect timing for you to kill me so we can settle our old scores for good.”
You Dai’er’s face was taut, her expression inscrutable as she watched her in silence.
When her attack didn’t come, Wen Nuan turned and walked up to the second floor. “If you decide you want to kill me, just come on up. I’m tired. I’m going to sleep.”
You Dai’er watched her slow, deliberate steps. Though she still looked young and beautiful, her movements were like those of an old woman about to be laid to rest.
Calculating her age now, her little witch was indeed old by human standards.
And that inexplicable feeling in her heart grew even more profound.
Wen Nuan truly was tired. This body was, after all, old.
Although witches lived longer than humans, they still aged and died. Besides, her body had already been failing since she sealed You Dai’er forty years ago. Dissolving the blood pact later had damaged it even more severely.
Even though she was fifty-five now, her physical condition was like that of a ninety-five-year-old.
Of course, some witches with ill intentions would use vicious curses to extend their lives, but most witches aged and died naturally. There were also some who overused their powers and died from exhaustion.
Witches could perceive the heavens and the earth. They were the mortal enemies of vampires and werewolves, and their lives were often tragically short.
The other side of the bed suddenly dipped. Wen Nuan didn’t open her eyes, her breathing remaining steady.
“Back when you sealed me, besides the sealing spell, what other curse did you use on me?”
The more You Dai’er thought about it, the more wrong it felt. Those emotions had come on too suddenly, leaving her feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Wen Nuan kept her eyes closed. “Humanity.”
“What’s that?”
You Dai’er looked at Wen Nuan’s profile. It was exquisite, like a porcelain doll’s.
“Something that can make you feel guilt.”
“Guilt?” You Dai’er scoffed. “I don’t need that kind of emotion. I can shut off my humanity myself.”
“That’s fine, too.” Wen Nuan turned her head to look at her. “Turn it off, and I’ll die. A happy ending for everyone.”
You Dai’er frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I used my own life to cast the curse that awakened your humanity. Though you have very little of it, it’s better than nothing. If you want to shut it off, it will just trigger a curse backlash. It won’t harm you.”
Curse backlash.
The one thing witches feared most was a curse’s backlash. What’s more, this was a curse Wen Nuan had cast with her life; the backlash would certainly kill her.
“So you’re saying my life or death depends on a single thought from you?”
Though she said the words, the feeling of holding power over Wen Nuan this time was not as detached as it used to be.
Wen Nuan nodded. “You could say that.”
You Dai’er’s frown deepened. She leaned forward, burying her head in the crook of Wen Nuan’s neck. Her eyes turned blood-red, her sharp fangs pressing against the soft skin.
Wen Nuan was as unmoving as a mountain, seemingly unconcerned by the fangs at her throat, though she did flinch for a second at the touch of You Dai’er’s icy body.
She tilted her head up, exposing her long, slender neck completely to You Dai’er’s view.
So fragile, and yet so resilient.
You Dai’er ran her tongue over her canines. She could feel the vibrant blood pulsing in Wen Nuan’s neck, could smell its sweet fragrance. The bloodlust in her body was tempting her to bite through Wen Nuan’s throat and devour every last part of her.
But that feeling in her heart was telling her: Can you bear to touch her?
She’s afraid of your cold, afraid of your bite, afraid of your cruelty.
Can you bear to cause her pain?
You Dai’er took a deep breath, her heavy exhale warming Wen Nuan’s earlobe, turning it red.
In that instant, she found the flushed earlobe even more tempting than the blood in her neck.
She switched battlefields, sucking on Wen Nuan’s earlobe.
“Hiss…”
Famished, she tugged a little too hard, hurting Wen Nuan.
She paid no mind to Wen Nuan’s cry of pain, focused only on her own pleasure as she ravaged the earlobe until it was an even deeper shade of crimson.
Having found a sliver of satisfaction, You Dai’er rolled off and lay down on the other side of the bed.
Forget it.
I really can’t bear to do it.
And I can’t shut off my humanity yet.
This is a bit tricky.
The system said cheerfully: 【Hehe, the female lead’s blackening value has decreased. Current corruption value: 8.8!】
Wen Nuan turned her head, a small smile playing on her lips.
