Volume Eight: Those Years When I Was an Alpha
There are tracks to be followed1.
Jiang Yichuan bit her trembling lip, but tears streamed down her face uncontrollably, dripping onto their tightly clasped hands. The heat made one’s heart tremble.
A heart-wrenching pain.
Feng Ban’s eyes soured. She took a deep breath and continued, “She would often chat with me, talking about the person in her heart.”
“She said that person was her junior2, and that she was very beautiful, with eyes as black as the night sky. She said that junior had a strange temper, but she especially loved to tease her, finding her very cute.”
“She said this junior of hers was actually an Omega. She had known her junior’s true identity for a long time, but she pretended not to, deliberately helping her hide it.”
“She said this junior of hers was excellent in her studies, formidable in combat, and skilled at operating mechs. On the points leaderboard, she was the first to bend a finger3, and she was exceptionally proud of her.”
“She said this junior of hers hadn’t been in good health recently. Because something bad had happened at the school, it had frightened her, so she had vented her junior’s anger for her.”
“She said this junior of hers had accidentally exposed her true identity and was discovered by the people at school. They wanted to transfer her to the Omega building to study, but her junior refused, resenting her Omega identity. She felt a heartache for her.”
Jiang Yichuan let out a series of whimpers, her face covered in tears as she buried her head in Wen Nuan’s warm hand.
Feng Ban closed her eyes, took a shaky breath, and said with a choke in her voice, “Later, after a long time, she came to Deluobu covered in blood. I thought she was injured and frantically asked her what had happened, why she was bleeding so much.”
“But she didn’t answer me. She just collapsed on the floor and cried her heart out.”
“She was covered in wounds and bleeding, yet she said the blood wasn’t hers, but her… junior’s.”
“She said she had hurt her junior, that her junior hated her and wished she could kill her. She was heartbroken. I had never seen her cry so fiercely, so hopelessly and helplessly.”
Jiang Yichuan’s limbs felt heavy and stiff. A feeling of tearing the heart and splitting the lungs4 flooded up from the bottom of her heart, the pain causing her body to tremble uncontrollably.
“Ever since the Gland Differentiation Surgery was developed, not a single trial had been conducted. I had originally intended to be Mu Wen Nuan’s first test subject, but that day I learned the main reason she researched this surgery was because her little junior detested her own Omega identity. She hated the feeling of being controlled and suppressed by other pheromones and feared the act of being marked. So, for her little junior, she developed the Gland Differentiation Surgery and personally performed it on her.”
“She became a wanted criminal in the interstellar universe. The charges were numerous, and any one of them could have been a death sentence. I begged her to stay in Deluobu, where she could be protected, but she didn’t. Instead, she vanished completely from the interstellar universe, and no one could find her.”
Feng Ban rubbed her chest with the heel of her palm, her throat tight. She let out a long sigh. “At that time, I thought she was dead.”
Jiang Yichuan’s breathing hitched.
The atmosphere in the confinement room was too oppressive, like a heavy stone pressing down on everyone’s heart, suffocating and making it hard to breathe.
Feng Ban wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes. “You think Wen Nuan doesn’t mark you because she doesn’t like you, but the truth is the exact opposite. She doesn’t mark you because she loves you too much.”
“She doesn’t want to use a mark to control you. She doesn’t want you to experience the pain of being marked. She doesn’t want you to be forever lost in the shadow of being marked.”
“A permanent mark is nothing remarkable for an Alpha or a Beta, but for every Omega, it is a lifelong bond, a shackle on their life and dignity. She doesn’t want to treat you like that, which is why when you offered your gland… she refused your request.”
“She knew you would be scared, even if you kept trying to prove your bravery to her.”
“But she knew,” Feng Ban said, her words thrown on the ground and making a sound5, “you would be scared.”
Jiang Yichuan finally couldn’t hold back anymore and broke down into loud sobs.
“Every Alpha has a susceptibility period, and Wen Nuan is no exception. For a high-level Alpha like her, the susceptibility period is even more difficult.” Feng Ban hopped off the bed and walked behind Jiang Yichuan. “Do you know how painful it is for an Alpha without an Omega’s comfort to get through each susceptibility period?”
“Wen Nuan never wanted an Omega’s comfort. In the past, she always relied on her own grit to endure it. Until one day, I saw her holding a pheromone spray. Whenever she couldn’t hold on, she would take a sniff of that spray, relying on that bottle to get through one susceptibility period after another. I happened to smell the pheromone in that spray once. The scent was too faint and dissipated easily.”
“At first, I didn’t know what that pheromone scent was. Until that day, in the combat room, I smelled the same scent.” Feng Ban watched Jiang Yichuan’s body tremble violently.
Her tone was bitter as she said, “Jiang Yichuan, the pheromone spray that Wen Nuan regarded as a rare treasure was your pheromone. Freesia.”
“I’m not saying this to blame you, but to tell you that you are the most important of the important in Wen Nuan’s heart. Don’t have wild and disorderly thoughts6 about whether she doesn’t love you. Others can say such things, but you cannot.”
“Before the Gland Differentiation Surgery was officially announced, you thought Wen Nuan operated on your gland because she wanted to kill you. It’s understandable that you would think that, so Wen Nuan never blamed you for hating her to the bone7.”
“Now, while Wen Nuan is unconscious, I can finally tell you all this and clear up the misunderstanding between you two. Consider it giving you both a happy ending.”
“…Why?”
Feng Ban paused. “What?”
Jiang Yichuan turned around stiffly, her red eyes looking at Feng Ban as she said in a hoarse voice, “Why are you… telling me this?”
Feng Ban froze, then gave a self-deprecating smile. “What do you think?”
Jiang Yichuan looked deeply at Feng Ban and said, “She’s mine.”
“Don’t you worry, I can’t snatch her away.”
If she could have, she would have had far more opportunities than Jiang Yichuan five years ago.
Feng Ban looked at Wen Nuan. As she lowered her head, her blue hair slid down and fell across Wen Nuan’s face.
Jiang Yichuan’s brow twitched. She raised a hand and moved the strand of blue hair away.
Feng Ban raised an eyebrow and smiled helplessly. “Does your possessiveness have to be this strong?”
Jiang Yichuan didn’t speak, only looking at her, her ink-black gaze too cold.
Feng Ban pouted and said casually, “Fine, I’ll be more careful, alright?”
She raised her hand and touched Wen Nuan’s gland, sighing in relief. “Her gland has closed. She’ll wake up by tomorrow at the latest. Don’t worry.”
Jiang Yichuan’s tightly furrowed brow relaxed. “Really?” she asked, uncertain.
“There’s nothing seriously wrong with her. It’s just that this susceptibility period came on too fiercely, and she couldn’t handle it all at once. Your pheromones did soothe her, but she was physically exhausted and had depleted too much of her mental energy, which is why she fell into a coma.”
Feng Ban pondered, murmuring in a low voice, “The aftereffect she’s experiencing is a bit like someone who hasn’t relieved their desires for a long time, and now it has all built up and erupted at once. Naturally, a person can’t withstand such a massive outbreak.”
But she quickly dismissed her own guess. After all, what kind of Alpha’s susceptibility period could be suppressed time and time again?
Hearing her say this, Jiang Yichuan felt relieved. “Thank you.”
Feng Ban gave a slight laugh. “No need to thank me. I didn’t do this for you. Just stay with her. I’ll be going now.”
Jiang Yichuan watched Feng Ban’s departing figure, her eyes looking dazed and desolate.
She turned her head and rested it on Wen Nuan’s hand, her voice, hoarse from crying, carried a trace of complaint. “Wen Nuan, how… could you be so bad?”
How could you… be so good?
Wen Nuan slowly opened her eyes, letting out a long breath. Her entire body felt refreshed and joyful. She had gotten through this susceptibility period very easily, which also proved one thing: an Alpha’s susceptibility period didn’t completely rely on marking an Omega. As long as the Alpha exercised a little self-control, they could get through it safely with the comfort of an Omega’s pheromones.
【You’re finally awake. You’ve been in a coma for three days and three nights.】 the system said helplessly.
Wen Nuan said, “I was in a coma for that long?”
【You bet. If it weren’t for the fact you were still breathing, I would’ve thought you were about to burp a fart8.】 The system picked its nose. 【I guess it’s because you were away from this mission world for three years, and the susceptibility periods from those three years all erupted during this time, so it was naturally much more intense.】
“Can’t you wish me something good for once?” Wen Nuan gave it a white eye9.
【Fine, I’ll wish you something good. Let me tell you, the female lead’s blackening value is now 0.8!】 the system said in pleasant surprise. 【How about that? Feeling surprised?!】
Wen Nuan’s eyes widened in disbelief. “I go10, it dropped that fast?”
The system giggled. 【When I saw the female lead’s blackening value suddenly drop, I suspected my data platform was malfunctioning.】
“Did something happen while I was in a coma?” Wen Nuan guessed.
The system gave Wen Nuan an affirmative look and transmitted a video clip to her.
【See for yourself.】
Wen Nuan watched the video sent by the system. After a while, she sighed deeply.
【Don’t sigh. All in all, it’s a good thing. At the very least, the female lead’s blackening value has dropped so much. We’re about to succeed.】 the system comforted her.
Watching the video, Wen Nuan felt a warmth in her chest. The rose there must have become even more vibrant.
A trace of gloom flashed in her eyes. “I know the mistakes I’ve made. It’s just that seeing the same mistakes hurt her again and again… it pains my heart.”
What she had thought was kindness had ultimately brought “her” nothing but endless harm.
The system sighed along with Wen Nuan. 【This might be the fundamental reason why the female lead in these ten worlds suddenly blackened. What you thought was good for her was, to her, you harming her. That’s why she blackened, causing the mission worlds to collapse.】
【The WU Index is already at 76%. After we unfreeze the other worlds, this WU Index will probably start to take effect.】
Wen Nuan looked at the WU Index. They hadn’t paid much attention to this index recently, and now it had already risen to 76%. It seemed this index was closely related to the mission worlds she had unfrozen.
【The blackening value is still at 0.8. Good luck with the rest.】 The system left a pile of instructions and went offline.
Wen Nuan shifted her gaze, her eyelids drooping to look at Jiang Yichuan, who was asleep while resting on her hand.
She raised her other hand, her eyes full of love and tenderness, and gently brushed away the stray hairs covering Jiang Yichuan’s eyes. Full of guilt, she said, “…I’m sorry.”
I’ve hurt you again.
Her fingertip lightly touched an eyelash. The lash trembled, and Jiang Yichuan opened her eyes.
The moment she looked at Wen Nuan, tears soaked Wen Nuan’s fingertip.
Jiang Yichuan gently rubbed her face against Wen Nuan’s palm. Her voice was hoarse and quiet, yet it struck Wen Nuan’s heart like a falling boulder.
“It’s okay,” she blinked, a teardrop rolling down her cheek, and said, “…I love you.”
They were lost in each other’s pupils, drowning in each other’s tears.
