Volume Eight: Those Years When I Was an Alpha
Class
The disadvantage of holding back for too long is that it’s easy to become impulsive and lose self-control.
A single kiss was all it took to draw out all the desires deep within Wen Nuan’s heart. She lifted Jiang Yichuan, letting her legs wrap around her waist. Their lips were inseparable as she quickened her pace towards the bedroom.
Jiang Yichuan felt her back hit something soft. Before she could react, an even fiercer assault left her mind blank, able to feel nothing but the stirring and lingering in her mouth.
A metal buckle was undone, and the slight breeze from the shifting of her clothes sent a chill across her chest.
Suddenly, the notification tone of the optical computer sounded.
Jiang Yichuan slowly came back to her senses, looking at Wen Nuan buried in her neck, the scorching kisses making her heart tremble.
She said with difficulty, “The… the optical computer…”
Exasperated, Wen Nuan shut off the optical computer and continued kissing Jiang Yichuan, her actions a bit rough, as if punishing her for her lack of focus.
The optical computer’s notification sounded again, this time flashing with a red light. A red light meant “important.”
Jiang Yichuan raised a hand and gave Wen Nuan a slight push, but the action was too light to have any effect. Taking advantage of the moment Wen Nuan released her lips, she gasped, “Optical computer, red light, it’s urgent.”
“Fuck!” Wen Nuan got up in frustration, pulling Jiang Yichuan into her arms and stroking her back to help her catch her breath.
She answered the optical computer, looking at Major General Ning Qiu in the video feed. “What’s wrong?”
Seeing her annoyed expression, Ning Qiu asked, puzzled, “What are you doing?”
Wen Nuan lowered her gaze to the flushed Jiang Yichuan. “I’m busy.”
“Busy with what? You took forever to answer the call.”
“Busy eating someone.”
Jiang Yichuan’s body tensed, and she buried her face in Wen Nuan’s chest, not daring to look up.
Ning Qiu: “…”
He was well aware of Wen Nuan’s habit of spouting nonsense. “The teaching appointment notice has come through. You can assume your post after the training students return.”
Wen Nuan nodded. “Okay, I got it. Thank you, Teacher.”
“One more thing, Jiang Yichuan ended her training early. Did she go find you?” The moment Ning Qiu learned that Jiang Yichuan had left the training ahead of schedule, he realized she was different to Wen Nuan.
Wen Nuan didn’t expect Ning Qiu to guess. She glanced at Jiang Yichuan, and before she could speak, she heard Ning Qiu say with certainty, “So Jiang Yichuan really did go find you.”
He had caught her downward glance just now.
Ning Qiu thought carefully about Wen Nuan’s glance. Could it be that those two were holding each other?
Combining that with Wen Nuan’s annoyed expression and her earlier comment about “eating someone.”
Ning Qiu’s eyes widened, and he roared, “Wen Nuan, you behave yourself! Secretly bonding with an Omega is a punishable crime!”
Wen Nuan was surprised that Ning Qiu had already guessed that much. She said helplessly, “Teacher, aren’t the laws being redrafted?”
“Even if they’re being redrafted, you can’t just mess around with AO relationships!” Ning Qiu said, exasperated with her lack of discipline.
“What do you mean, mess around?” Wen Nuan saw that Jiang Yichuan had recovered and turned the optical computer towards her. “Xiao Chuanchuan, say hello. This is my teacher, Major General Ning Qiu. Teacher, you say hello too. This is my girlfriend, Jiang Yichuan.”
Jiang Yichuan smiled politely. “Hello, Major General Ning Qiu. I am Jiang Yichuan, Mu Wen Nuan’s girlfriend.”
Ning Qiu was speechless. “…”
Wen Nuan stroked Jiang Yichuan’s head and turned the optical computer back to herself, looking at the stunned Ning Qiu. “Teacher, Xiao Chuanchuan and I are in a relationship where the name is correct and the words are in order1, and once she graduates, I’ll marry her. Then I’ll be driving with a license2.”
Jiang Yichuan looked at Wen Nuan in disbelief. Did she hear that correctly?
Wen Nuan wanted to marry her?
Seeing Wen Nuan’s shameless, smug look, Ning Qiu knew his student’s flippant nature all too well. He was also aware that his student was the one who had secretly orchestrated the sensational incident of the three Alphas’ tragic deaths at the First Military Academy. He had originally intended to use all his power to protect his student, but he never expected her to be so capable that she didn’t need his protection at all, instead resolving all the subsequent problems herself.
Jiang Yichuan had been one of the Empire’s favored candidates for Crown Princess. He hadn’t wanted Wen Nuan to get involved with her, but this little rascal had struck too fast, catching everyone off guard.
Fortunately, Xi Chen had said in advance that he would not choose Jiang Yichuan as the Crown Princess candidate, which allowed Ning Qiu to relax and let Wen Nuan do evil and commit crimes3.
“You…” Ning Qiu was so angered by Wen Nuan’s roguish demeanor that he couldn’t speak, yet she always looked so proud of herself, making one’s teeth itch with frustration.
Wen Nuan watched Ning Qiu hang up the call and smiled. “Tsk, he’s actually angry.”
Jiang Yichuan blinked. “Major General Ning Qiu is angry? Did I do something wrong?”
“No, he’s angry that I’m so dissolute.”
“What?”
Wen Nuan looked at Jiang Yichuan’s clueless expression, so pure and harmless it made one’s heart itch.
She leaned in, gave her a kiss, and deliberately teased her, “He said I’m a very bad person, always wanting to be a hooligan with you.”
Jiang Yichuan’s face turned slightly red. “It’s okay, I like it when you… are a hooligan with me.”
She loved every time Wen Nuan got close and touched her.
Wen Nuan’s eyes slightly lifted, and she chuckled lightly. “So obedient.”
Having ended her training early, Jiang Yichuan stayed at Wen Nuan’s house for a full half-month. She had wanted to return to the student dorms so as not to interfere with Wen Nuan’s work, but Wen Nuan wouldn’t let her, saying it was more convenient for teaching if she stayed.
The system watched Wen Nuan sleeping alone and sighed: 【The female lead’s blackening value is only 2.6 points away from being completely eliminated. If you go to the next room and hit a home run4 right now, our work will be done and we can withdraw5.】
“What’s the rush?” Wen Nuan lay on her side, looking at the moonlight outside. “I have a feeling that this last 2.6 isn’t something that can be solved just by me doing that kind of thing with her.”
The system was puzzled: 【Then what could it be?】
Wen Nuan thought for a moment. “I just feel like she’s still hiding something from me.”
Although Jiang Yichuan was very good to her, obedient in all matters, and seemed to easily accept even the excessive demands Wen Nuan deliberately made.
But this acceptance felt very awkward to Wen Nuan, as if Jiang Yichuan was trying her utmost to please her, afraid that she would be abandoned.
Jiang Yichuan’s entire being exuded a thick sense of insecurity and panic, which became even stronger when she was interacting with others for work.
And her insecurity, Wen Nuan figured, was because of her.
When the training for the First Military Academy’s students ended, Jiang Yichuan had to go back to school.
She had two months left until graduation.
Seeing that Wen Nuan was still asleep, Jiang Yichuan made breakfast first, left a small note, and went to school.
Lately, Wen Nuan had gotten into the habit of sleeping until she woke up naturally, so she was a bit dazed when Ning Qiu woke her up this morning.
“It’s your first day of work and you’re already late?!”
Wen Nuan yawned. “What work, I wasn’t even going…”
A flash of realization crossed her mind. Wen Nuan immediately jumped out of bed and ran to the living room. Seeing the breakfast and note Jiang Yichuan had left for her, she muttered incessantly, “I’m late, I’m late, I’m going to be late…”
Seeing her frantic state, Ning Qiu helplessly disconnected the call.
Wen Nuan quickly got ready, even finishing the breakfast Jiang Yichuan had made for her, before flying off to the First Military Academy.
The principal of the First Military Academy was waiting at the entrance early on. The moment he saw Wen Nuan’s figure appear, he immediately went up to greet her.
“Teacher Mu, good morning,” the principal said cordially.
He had been thrilled when he heard that Mu Wen Nuan was coming to teach at the First Military Academy.
Wen Nuan had no time for pleasantries. “My class is about to start, I should get going,” she said urgently.
The principal tried to curry favor. “No rush, no rush. How about I show Teacher Mu our school’s facilities and scenery first?”
“No need, I could walk this school with my eyes closed. I won’t trouble you, Principal,” Wen Nuan politely declined.
“Have you had breakfast? How about…”
“No thanks, I’m leaving now.” Wen Nuan waved to him, turned, and ran towards the school’s combat training room.
The principal watched Wen Nuan’s retreating back and gave an awkward smile.
The students for the combat class had gathered in the combat room early. It was a combined class for three sections.
Class One, Class Four, and Class Ten.
Xi Chen was in Class Four, and Jiang Yichuan was in Class Ten. Many of their courses overlapped, so they would often end up together when they had classes.
The other students were constantly talking about the Gland Differentiation Surgery. They had scheduled their surgeries long ago and kept mentioning the name Mu Wen Nuan, their admiration and adoration for her overflowing and uncontrollable.
Xi Chen looked at the gloomy-faced Jiang Yichuan beside him; it was obvious she was in a bad mood.
He glanced at the discussing crowd nearby. As their excited voices grew louder, Jiang Yichuan’s expression grew darker.
“Yichuan, don’t pay too much attention to what others say. Everyone just reveres Mu Wen Nuan.”
After all, the Gland Differentiation Surgery meant that the rights and status of ABOs were no longer disparate; they all had a voice in this world now.
The Empire had promulgated new laws, and the First Military Academy had revised many of its rules, expanding and opening up the permissions for Omegas, allowing them to take the same courses as Alphas and Betas to achieve equality in learning.
Today’s combat class was a combined session for ABOs. Omegas and Alphas who hadn’t undergone the surgery would wear blocker patches beforehand as a precaution, while there were fewer restrictions for Alphas and Omegas who had already had the surgery.
Jiang Yichuan looked up and replied faintly, “Mm.”
For some reason, Xi Chen felt that Jiang Yichuan’s resentment had grown even heavier.
“You stayed at her place for the whole half-month you were back early?” Xi Chen asked.
Jiang Yichuan nodded. “Mm.”
Xi Chen’s gaze drifted to the back of Jiang Yichuan’s neck. He asked tentatively, “You two didn’t…?”
Jiang Yichuan knew what Xi Chen was asking. She shook her head. “No.”
“No?” Xi Chen couldn’t help but be puzzled. “Haven’t you two already confirmed your relationship?”
He had known for a while that they were together, which was why he had rejected the Empire’s suggestion of making Jiang Yichuan his Crown Princess.
Jiang Yichuan lowered her eyes. “I don’t go through heat periods anymore.”
“That doesn’t stop her from marking you, does it?”
Although the Gland Differentiation Surgery could help Alphas and Omegas resolve the effects of susceptibility periods and heat periods, the glands could still be used for marking. It just meant that an Omega wouldn’t be forced into a marking by the overwhelming influence of powerful pheromones.
Now, an Alpha could still claim ownership with the Omega’s consent, marking their Omega as their own.
Xi Chen looked at Jiang Yichuan, his brow furrowed. “Do you resent being marked by an Alpha?”
He knew about Jiang Yichuan’s resistance and aversion to Alphas.
“I do resent being marked by Alphas,” Jiang Yichuan said, looking at Xi Chen, “but I don’t resent her.”
“Then what’s the missing piece between you two?”
Jiang Yichuan’s fingers curled. “I don’t want to force her.”
Force her?
Xi Chen was taken aback, puzzled. “What do you mean, you don’t want to force her?”
Does an Alpha need to be forced to mark an Omega?
Jiang Yichuan ran a hand through her hair. “She’s probably just interested in me for the moment,” she said helplessly.
Xi Chen paused.
She looked at him, her voice weak. “Three years ago, my Omega identity was leaked, and I went into my heat period. She was right there with me at the time. She could have given me a temporary marking to alleviate my heat, but she didn’t. Instead, she called you over.”
Even though she had detested the idea of an Alpha’s marking back then, she had still held a sliver of hope that Mu Wen Nuan would mark her.
Unfortunately, Mu Wen Nuan had turned away without hesitation.
When Xi Chen arrived, he didn’t mark her either, instead giving her several injections of suppressants to alleviate the condition. But her Omega identity had already been discovered, and the school planned to transfer her to the Omega teaching district.
Jiang Yichuan refused to go. She used her various academic achievements from her freshman year to prove that as an Omega, she could compare to an Alpha. However, the school’s upper management believed that even if her grades were excellent, and even if her mental power and perception reached S-rank, she was still an Omega who would enter a heat period and lose self-control. There was still a great danger when interacting with Alphas, and the school did not want a repeat of the tragedy where an Omega died at the hands of an Alpha.
Especially for an S-rank Omega, the school was more inclined to protect her, saving her for future mating with an S-rank Alpha.
Jiang Yichuan wanted to resist, but she had no power to do so, until Mu Wen Nuan personally performed the Gland Differentiation Surgery on her, making her unresponsive to any pheromones and free from the interference of heat periods. This also threw the Empire’s plans for her allocation into confusion.
After all, they considered such a special Omega to be incomplete, to be flawed.
But for Jiang Yichuan, it was a rebirth.
Jiang Yichuan thought that perhaps Mu Wen Nuan’s interest in her was only temporary, that she just found this Omega interesting, which was why she was chosen as the first candidate when she was preparing for the Gland Differentiation Surgery.
After all, among all the delicate Omegas, she was relatively durable, so using her as the first case offered the best chance of success.
A clamor arose from the surroundings, but Jiang Yichuan was lost in thought and paid it no mind. A slight breeze passed by as someone sat down next to her.
Jiang Yichuan frowned and was about to get up and leave when she heard a familiar, light laugh in her ear.
“This student isn’t paying attention in class. Where are you planning on going?”
