Volume Eight: Those Years When I Was an Alpha
Boundary
September 9th, Star Calendar.
The interstellar universe ushered in a new era.
The name Mu Wen Nuan was deeply branded into everyone’s hearts, impossible to erase.
The circulation of three surgical videos had invigorated and thrilled everyone. They prayed like mad for Mu Wen Nuan to save them, to change their destinies.
Now that Mu Wen Nuan had become the sole practitioner of this technology, everyone swarmed to her, hoping she would be their surgeon. Some, with their heat periods and susceptibility periods approaching, were desperate to run to Mu Wen Nuan and kneel, begging for the operation.
As for the Betas, upon discovering that Mu Wen Nuan’s pheromones could affect them, they too went wild with excitement.
The reform of an era is chaotic. To salvage the situation from this chaos, Mu Wen Nuan did two things.
First, she would teach this technology to others, allowing them to perform the surgery in her stead. There were no fixed selection criteria; ABOs of any type could become her students.
Second, regarding the pheromones required for Beta surgeries, she would provide her pheromones to the Federation Pheromone Bank every month for their convenience.
The reform progressed with speed and stability. This reform received the support of nearly the entire interstellar universe. In just two months, the pace of reform had already taken firm and powerful steps forward.
After another busy day that ended at ten, Wen Nuan dragged her exhausted body toward the house assigned to her by the Empire.
Someone had offered to drive her back, but Wen Nuan wanted to be alone for a while. After all, whenever someone was with her, they would either ask her all sorts of random questions or just stare at her with blatant admiration, which was very annoying.
The technology was now being implemented very well. The ten students she had taught were quick learners, among them Chu Luo and Shi Jiayang. Their surgical success rates were nearly perfect, and Wen Nuan felt confident entrusting the work to them.
The optical computer on her wrist flashed. It was a message from Chu Luo, telling her he had successfully completed another surgery. Wen Nuan replied with a simple “Okay” and turned it off.
She wanted some quiet.
【It’s been two months. You’ve been running around in circles with these matters. Do you still remember the female lead’s blackening value.】 the system said helplessly.
Wen Nuan sighed wearily. “I remember. But the First Military Academy arranged for the upper-year students to go to Planet Yamiluo for intensive training. With the sky being high and the emperor being far away1, how am I supposed to contact her?”
She had tried to contact Jiang Yichuan using the communication chip, but she never received a reply. She figured the training was closed off, preventing them from communicating with the outside world.
The system looked at the data panel. 【The female lead’s blackening value is at 6.9 right now. It’s still not below the average, which is very dangerous.】
“Don’t worry. I’ll put things here on hold and spend some proper time with her.”
Wen Nuan stretched, looking up to see a person standing at her front door.
The person stood with their back to her, tall and slender. A black leather belt was fastened at their waist, making an already slim waist seem even more graspable and accentuating the length and slenderness of their legs. They wore high military boots with a capable and neat flair. From behind, they cut a dashing and heroic figure.
The person seemed to hear the footsteps behind them and turned to look at Wen Nuan.
Half of her face was hidden in the shadows of the eaves, and only the part of her face in the lamplight could be seen, her lips pressed together slightly.
“Wen Nuan?”
Hearing the familiar voice, Wen Nuan’s eyes lit up, and she immediately quickened her pace. “Xiao Chuanchuan, you’re back?”
Hearing the familiar nickname and the unmistakable joy in her tone, the corners of Jiang Yichuan’s mouth lifted slightly. “Mhm, I’m ba—”
A warm embrace cut her words short.
Jiang Yichuan’s body stiffened. She moved her arms mechanically, not knowing where to put them.
Should she hold her tight like Wen Nuan was, or should she whisper words of longing in her ear as Wen Nuan did?
“Xiao Chuanchuan, I missed you so much.”
“Xiao Chuanchuan, I sent you so many messages. Why didn’t you reply?”
“Xiao Chuanchuan, how did you get back so early? I thought you still had about half a month of training left.”
“Xiao Chuanchuan, did you come looking for me as soon as you got back?”
“Xiao Chuanchuan, was the training tiring? Were you injured?”
“Xiao Chuanchuan, did you… miss me?”
…
The upward curve of Jiang Yichuan’s lips widened. She lowered her gaze, a faint glimmer of a smile in her eyes. The voice by her ear grew softer and softer, and only after Wen Nuan stopped asking questions did she slowly begin to answer.
“Now I know you were thinking of me.”
“To ensure we could focus on training, the camp set up signal jammers, so I couldn’t reply to you in time. I’m sorry.”
“I finished my training tasks ahead of schedule, so I came back early.”
“I came to find you as soon as I got back.”
“The training was very tiring, but I wasn’t injured.”
A few bright specks appeared in Jiang Yichuan’s dark pupils. She gave a faint smile, her voice soft. “…Wen Nuan, I missed you a lot.”
Hearing Wen Nuan’s light snores by her ear, Jiang Yichuan carefully lifted her into her arms. The door unlocked with facial recognition. Jiang Yichuan held Wen Nuan’s face up to the scanner, and the door opened automatically.
The house had a simple decor, with two bedrooms and one living room in a minimalist and tasteful style.
Jiang Yichuan walked into a room that clearly showed signs of being lived in. She placed Wen Nuan on the bed and was about to get up and leave when two arms wrapped around her neck, pulling her down abruptly.
“Xiao Chuanchuan is so strong, you can carry me,” Wen Nuan said, her eyes narrowed, looking very sleepy.
Indeed, she was truly tired. For the past two months, she had been working like a horse not stopping its hooves2.
Jiang Yichuan propped her hands on either side of Wen Nuan, the distance between them only a knuckle’s length apart.
She watched Wen Nuan’s rosy lips move, like a blooming flower stamen, beckoning bees and attracting butterflies3.
She swallowed, her gaze darting away, yet she was unwilling to let this charming moment go.
“You’re not heavy. It was easy to carry you.”
The corners of Wen Nuan’s mouth lifted. “It’s getting late,” she said lazily. “Want to sleep here?”
Jiang Yichuan froze. Looking at her gradually unfocusing eyes, she said in a low voice, “…Okay.”
Wen Nuan released her hands and patted the spot beside her. “Get in bed.”
Jiang Yichuan paused, then retracted the leg that was about to step away. “…Okay,” she said in a hoarse voice.
Seeing that she was about to sleep fully clothed, Wen Nuan closed her eyes slightly. “Not taking your clothes off?”
A brief flash of panic crossed Jiang Yichuan’s face. She took a deep breath. “…Okay.”
“Why do you say ‘okay’ to everything I say?” Wen Nuan chuckled, teasing her intentionally. “Does that mean… you’ll say ‘okay’ to anything I ask you to do?”
Jiang Yichuan’s movements paused. “…What could you ask me to do?”
Curling her fingers, she unbuttoned her shirt, slowly taking it off while looking at Wen Nuan. “What would you dare to ask me to do?”
She was doing it on purpose. It was common knowledge that Alphas were dominant and could not be questioned. They couldn’t stand being provoked.
So she wanted to push Wen Nuan.
Wen Nuan watched her movements. The simple act of undressing was somehow made to look sensual and bewitching by her.
The collar of Jiang Yichuan’s short-sleeved shirt underneath was a bit wide. As she moved her arms, Wen Nuan easily saw the scar on her chest.
Wen Nuan swallowed, her voice raspy. “After you’re done, can you help me take mine off too? I’m too lazy to move.”
Jiang Yichuan’s eyes flickered. “…Okay.”
【Just that?】 the system asked, astonished. 【You’re not gonna do something else?!】
Wen Nuan was truly exhausted, her eyelids about to close. “What else do you want us to do?”
【You know, that?】 the system said cheekily.
“She doesn’t like it. I won’t touch her.”
The first time Wen Nuan saw Jiang Yichuan was at the start of the school year at the First Military Academy. The young woman had deliberately hidden her Omega identity, pretending to be a Beta to study at the military academy.
It wasn’t that the First Military Academy didn’t accept Omega students, but the education Omegas received was different from that of Alphas and Betas. Omegas focused more on courses like how to reproduce and serve Alphas, while Alphas and Betas would study subjects like combat, mecha, and military theory. Furthermore, Omegas, Alphas, and Betas were taught separately. They did not attend classes or live together. For better control, each school had different buildings for teaching different students.
But it was inevitable for students in their adolescence to be curious about each other. They would cross all barriers to get closer. Because of this, during the first semester after the school year began, an incident occurred that shocked all the students and teachers.
An Omega student was helping a teacher deliver files to the headmaster’s office in the joint Alpha and Beta academic building. As a result, she ran into three Alphas who were in their susceptibility period. By the time people found the Omega, the girl had been tormented to death by the three Alphas. Her gland was bitten so badly it was nearly rotten. The girl’s pure white body resembled a pitted, tattered rag, lying in a pool of blood—a tragic sight.
The incident alarmed the school’s upper management. The solution the school provided was to expel the three Alphas and offer some compensation to the Omega’s family.
But this resolution was met with opposition from some, led by Xi Chen and Jiang Yichuan. They believed in a life for a life.
However, the three Alphas had powerful and prominent family backgrounds. Not even Xi Chen’s noble status as the Empire’s Crown Prince was enough to make the three Alphas pay with their lives for the Omega.
As for Jiang Yichuan, who came from an orphanage, there was even less she could do to punish the three Alphas. Especially since she had seen the girl’s gruesome death, it made her wish she could give those three Alphas a thousand cuts and ten thousand slices4.
The female lead was the type to act on her thoughts. She gathered information on the three Alphas’ movements and learned that they loved to hang out at a bar called “Midnight Snack.”
This “Midnight Snack” bar was a filthy place. The owner privately engaged in the flesh trade, and Omegas would often go missing or be thrown into the dumpsters after dying there.
Jiang Yichuan knew these three Alphas were regulars, so she specifically staked out the place, planning to ambush them.
But before she could make a move, someone else decided that the one who strikes first is the strongest.
This was also the scene of Jiang Yichuan and Mu Wen Nuan’s first meeting. She watched as the senior who was always number one on the scoreboards ambushed the three Alphas and took them away. She brought them to a dumpster and, ignoring their pleas and threats, executed them without mercy. Then she threw the bodies into a grinder and turned to leave, her actions cool and decisive. It was as if she hadn’t come to kill people, but rather to take a stroll and dispose of some trash along the way.
Because of this, Jiang Yichuan began to pay attention to this genius senior, Mu Wen Nuan.
The matter of the three Alphas’ murder, the incident of the east window was exposed5. It was expected that the three major families would raise an army to condemn the crime6, but unexpectedly, they found that they couldn’t even protect themselves. The Federation and the Empire discovered they had betrayed Tofis, and moreover, core members of their families had been contaminated by the Zerg. The Emperor was furious and ordered their homes to be raided and for them to be executed directly.
Following this series of events, the Empire amended the protection protocols for Omegas, placing them under almost complete protection. Omegas’ permissions were reduced, their rights became negligible, and they no longer had any autonomy. They became nothing more than fragile vases. Their marriages and partners were assigned by the state, and they were forbidden from forming private relationships.
Jiang Yichuan already disliked Alphas. After that incident, she grew to despise all Alphas in the world. When the Empire issued this protocol, her aversion turned into deep-seated hatred.
She could never forget the state of that Omega’s dead body, nor the lowly and cheap way Omegas begged for an Alpha’s mark when they entered their heat period and couldn’t suppress it with inhibitors. She detested Alphas and, at the same time, loathed her own Omega identity.
Wen Nuan knew Jiang Yichuan’s bottom line and principles, so she loved her carefully within those boundaries.
When she asked Jiang Yichuan to undress her, it was only to test the limits of her acceptance.
Jiang Yichuan had accepted her embrace, so could she perhaps let her take one more step closer?
Wen Nuan lowered her eyes to watch Jiang Yichuan unbuttoning her shirt. Her slender fingers undid the buttons deftly.
Upon closer inspection, her fingertips were trembling slightly.
She sighed softly. “Forget it. Let’s just sleep like this. I usually sleep with my clothes on anyway.”
She couldn’t bring herself to be hard on her. The young woman had reservations in her heart; she couldn’t be forced.
A shadow passed over Jiang Yichuan’s eyes. She stopped and stood up. “Okay.”
Wen Nuan patted the space beside her. “Come on up and sleep. Don’t be afraid, I won’t touch you. If you’re worried, you can go to the next room…”
Before she could finish, Jiang Yichuan took off her outer shirt and lay down beside Wen Nuan in her short-sleeved top. She turned her head to meet her gaze, her voice faint. “I’m not afraid.”
Wen Nuan smiled and patted Jiang Yichuan’s hand. “Goodnight.”
Jiang Yichuan copied her gesture, patting her hand back. “Goodnight.”
She watched as Wen Nuan closed her eyes and fell asleep. She didn’t pull her hand back. Instead, she quietly tightened her grip.
