Volume Eight: Those Years When I Was an Alpha
Who am I?
Back then, when Bian Tuo self-destructed his Ziguang mecha1, it was only to hold back Chaoyang. He never expected that a single mecha’s self-destruction could actually kill her.
During his escape, Bian Tuo examined Sun’s manuscript only to find that it was incomplete. All the important parts were glossed over, and the rest was just nonsense.
Bian Tuo immediately realized he had been tricked by Chaoyang. If he were to return to the auction house now, he feared the people would have left and the building would be empty.
So, he immediately dispatched a starship to block the route those six students would take back to Planet Tofis, planning to play a game of letting the willing one take the bait2.
He wasn’t very confident about luring Chaoyang out; after all, she was a very slippery person.
However, the omega among the six students had caught Chaoyang’s special attention. So, he had originally intended to use this omega to draw Chaoyang out, but it was a shame that this omega was one where oil and salt won’t enter3, making her difficult to control.
Until—
Bian Tuo discovered that this omega was very interested in the other omega he had sent to be captured.
She was even willing to repay kindness with enmity for this omega’s sake.
Interesting.
“Boss, that omega is back,” Tian He4 walked up and said.
Bian Tuo raised an eyebrow. “Mm, bring her in.”
“Understood.”
Bian Tuo looked at the five people locked up and said teasingly, “Your friend, in order to save you, has captured Chaoyang and brought her back to me. Are you happy?”
The five glared at Bian Tuo, the resentment and hatred in their eyes almost tangible.
Bian Tuo didn’t care about this bit of hatred. He looked at the approaching omega and the unconscious person in her arms.
He clapped his hands and laughed loudly. “Excellent, excellent. Truly a top student selected by the First Military Academy. Your efficiency is indeed swift and decisive.”
Jiang Yichuan looked at the people in the two cages and said in a cold voice, “Let my friends go.”
Bian Tuo made no move, instead smiling casually. “A student is just a student. Brave and fearless, but lacking worldly experience and a brain.”
A ruthless glint flashed in his eyes. “What makes you think an interstellar pirate would honor his word?”
Jiang Yichuan lowered her gaze. She set Chaoyang down, holding her in her arms, and her five fingers tightened around her slender neck. “Did you think I wouldn’t consider that?”
“If worst comes to worst, we can return to annihilation together. Once Chaoyang is dead, you can forget about ever getting Sun’s manuscript.”
Bian Tuo’s eyes narrowed. “You dare threaten me?”
“You were the one who broke the agreement first. You can’t have all the benefits,” Jiang Yichuan said with a sarcastic smile. “Am I right?”
“How about this? You hand Chaoyang over to me, and I’ll let your friends and your beloved omega go. How does that sound?” Bian Tuo conceded.
Jiang Yichuan was unmoved, merely glancing at him faintly. “Let them leave first.”
“And if you go back on your word, won’t I lose both the person and the wealth?” Bian Tuo said in a deep voice.
Jiang Yichuan’s hand tightened. “Then shall we return to annihilation together?”
“Don’t!” Seeing that Jiang Yichuan was about to strangle Chaoyang, Bian Tuo said, breathing heavily, “You and I are both omegas. There’s no need for us to kill each other. I only want Chaoyang for Sun’s manuscript. That manuscript can change the disadvantaged position we omegas have always been in. We would no longer have to be controlled by alpha pheromones. We wouldn’t have to endure those disgusting heat periods, debasing ourselves to beg alphas to mark us. We wouldn’t be trapped in a comfort zone, giving birth to the next generation for them like some inhuman breeding machine. We could enjoy so many rights we’ve never had. Don’t you want to change the tragic fate of all omegas in this world?”
Jiang Yichuan’s expression flickered. “You’re right.”
Bian Tuo thought he had persuaded Jiang Yichuan and slowly approached her.
“But I don’t trust you,” Jiang Yichuan’s gaze turned cold. “You speak as if you deeply understand the greater principles5, but you are a selfish and self-serving6 person. Perhaps you could change the lives of omegas with Sun’s manuscript, but you would only change your own life. As for the other omegas, what are they in your eyes?”
“They would only become a stepping stone7 for you to change your own life.”
Bian Tuo’s face darkened, and he gritted his teeth. “You condemn me, but what about yourself? To save your friends, didn’t you also repay kindness with enmity?”
“What awe-inspiring righteousness are you pretending to have with me?!”
“Yes, I did repay kindness with enmity,” Jiang Yichuan’s lips curled. “So I will pay the price.”
“I’ll say it again. Let my friends go, and I won’t kill Chaoyang!”
Bian Tuo stared at Jiang Yichuan and took a deep breath. “Then kill her.”
“…What?” Jiang Yichuan was stunned.
Bian Tuo crossed his arms, speaking casually. “Go on, kill her. It would be a good thing for you to kill Chaoyang on behalf of us Evil Ghost. As for the real Sun manuscript, I have plenty of ways to get it.”
“Did you really think I’d be threatened by a little brat who is just the first time out of the thatched cottage8?”
Bian Tuo raised a hand, his expression faint. “Go on, kill Chaoyang. As for your friends, I will personally throw them into a wormhole right in front of you, to be torn apart and devoured by the Insectoid race.”
“And this omega…” Bian Tuo grabbed “Mu Wen Nuan’s” hair, speaking with a ferocious expression, “I’ll take her to Duoluo Planet9 and make her a whore to be slept with by a thousand men and ridden by ten thousand, so that her living is not as good as dying.”
Jiang Yichuan’s hand trembled, her face contorting. “You…”
She was greatly alarmed, her concentration wavering for a moment.
Sensing this, Bian Tuo immediately strode forward, grabbed Jiang Yichuan’s wrist, flipped her hands over, and kneed her in the back.
Jiang Yichuan struggled but was restrained even more forcefully by Bian Tuo.
“Stop struggling. As if you could…” Bian Tuo saw the scar on the back of Jiang Yichuan’s neck, and his eyes narrowed.
He ripped the black cloth from her neck. “What is this?”
Jiang Yichuan let out a cold sneer.
Bian Tuo didn’t expect an answer from her. He gave a nearby alpha a look. “Release your pheromones, control her.”
The alpha released his pheromones, but Bian Tuo discovered that Jiang Yichuan was not affected by them at all, and the gland on the back of her neck showed no change.
“All alphas, release your pheromones at her!”
At Bian Tuo’s command, all the pheromones in the starship assaulted Jiang Yichuan at once, but she had no reaction whatsoever.
“…Why?” Bian Tuo said, losing his voice.
Jiang Yichuan snorted coldly. “Can’t you tell? My gland was destroyed. So trying to control me with alpha pheromones is useless.”
Her gland was destroyed!?
Everyone was shocked.
Bian Tuo said in astonishment, “If your gland was destroyed, it’s impossible for you to still be alive, let alone pilot a mecha and engage in combat!”
The gland was extremely important to them. If a gland was destroyed, the mildest outcome was lifelong paralysis and mental collapse, becoming a cripple. The most severe was immediate death with no chance of recovery.
There had never been a single person who could live a healthy and active life after their gland was destroyed.
Never!
Bian Tuo pressed down on Jiang Yichuan’s head, completely exposing her gland. The scar on it had not faded and its shape was still clearly visible.
He felt that the direction of the scar was a bit strange, too neat, as if it had been done intentionally.
“Who caused this scar?” Bian Tuo asked.
Jiang Yichuan glanced at the people in the cage. “None of your damn business.”
Bian Tuo keenly sensed a change in Jiang Yichuan. He looked at the other omega. “Did she injure your gland?”
Jiang Yichuan pressed her lips together, remaining silent.
“Fine, if you won’t talk, I’ll ask her directly.” Bian Tuo handed Jiang Yichuan over to Tian He and walked toward the cage.
As he passed the prone form of Chaoyang on the floor, Bian Tuo suddenly felt that something was wrong. Before he could react, a short blade against his neck had already alerted him.
“You did this on purpose?”
Thinking back now, Chaoyang was not the type of person to let her guard down for the sake of beauty.
Bian Tuo felt the sharpness of the blade and looked at Jiang Yichuan. “You two worked together?”
Wen Nuan smiled. “How else could we have captured you?”
She shook her head. “Xiao Chuanchuan, you bumped my head when you threw me just now. You have to rub it for me later, ‘kay?”
Jiang Yichuan couldn’t help but turn over a white eye at her.
Seeing the familiar eye-roll, Wen Nuan smiled. “How about it? The tables have turned now, haven’t they?”
Bian Tuo said calmly, “You think I can be threatened by you?”
“You can’t, I know,” Wen Nuan retracted the blade. “So I plan to make a deal with you.”
“What deal?” Bian Tuo turned, escaping Wen Nuan’s hold.
Wen Nuan pointed at the people in the cages and at Jiang Yichuan. “Let these kids go.”
Bian Tuo didn’t refute her proposal, instead asking, “What do I get?”
“You just want to change the effect your gland has on you. I can help you with that.”
Bian Tuo’s eyes narrowed. “I have Sun’s manuscript. Your use to me isn’t that great.”
“Hah, if I’m not that useful, why did you have little Chuanchuan try to seduce me?” Wen Nuan snorted.
Jiang Yichuan was speechless. “I did not seduce you!”
Wen Nuan pouted. “Xiao Chuanchuan is beautiful enough to topple states and cities. Just one look at me is enough to seduce me, making my spring heart sprout and move10, leaving me wishing to stop but unable to.”
Bian Tuo: “…”
Jiang Yichuan gritted her teeth. “…Pervert!”
Wen Nuan threw up her hands and pouted. “Look at you, still using my pet name for you. We’re in public, be a little more mindful, you’ll make me shy.”
Jiang Yichuan: “…”
Bian Tuo clutched his chest, suppressing a wave of nausea. “…Can you stop being so disgusting?”
“Disgusting?” Wen Nuan shrugged. “Right, a person like you who’s never been in a relationship would naturally not understand this kind of fun.”
Bian Tuo: “…”
If he weren’t unable to beat this person, he would have shot her long ago!
Hearing Wen Nuan’s words, Jiang Yichuan subconsciously looked toward the Omega lying on the floor in the other cage and snapped, “…Don’t you fucking spout nonsense, who the fuck is in a relationship with you?!”
Wen Nuan noticed that Jiang Yichuan’s gaze kept falling on the other cage. She turned to look at it. Judging by her appearance and the pheromones she emitted, the person in the cage was a top-grade S-class Omega woman with a great figure. It was just that the woman had been affected by the alpha pheromones earlier and was lying weakly on the ground, her hair covering her face so her features couldn’t be seen clearly.
But just from her figure and skin, she was definitely of the highest quality.
Wen Nuan was lost in thought. Could the Omega Jiang Yichuan wanted to save be this woman?
But in this mission world’s plotline, a third S-class Omega never appeared. Where did this S-class Omega pop out from?
To know Jiang Yichuan and be valued so highly by her, could she also be a student from Planet Tofis’s First Military Academy?
【It’s possible the world’s plot has been changed. Just get used to it.】the System said calmly.
Wen Nuan thought that made sense. Ever since she returned to the source world, the original world plotline’s role had already diminished.
“Stop wasting my time here. What you’re offering doesn’t entice me. Even if you can escape my starship, they certainly can’t.” Bian Tuo had no time to insert gags and make impromptu jokes with Wen Nuan.
Wen Nuan came back to her senses. “If you’re counting on that manuscript, you can forget about ever being able to obtain the fulfillment of your wish in this lifetime.”
Bian Tuo’s brow furrowed. “What makes you say that?”
He pointed at Jiang Yichuan. “Even if that manuscript is useless to me, I’ve discovered that she is far more useful than it.”
Wen Nuan raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Bian Tuo walked over to Jiang Yichuan and pushed her head down, letting everyone see the scar on her gland. “See this?”
“A scar?” Wen Nuan looked up.
“This isn’t just any ordinary scar, it’s a minimally invasive scar11,” Bian Tuo said, looking at Jiang Yichuan’s gland. “This kind of scar isn’t easily left behind. It’s usually sutured from inside the body, so the suture marks remain internal. From the outside, it looks like a severe trauma, but in reality, this scar slowly emerges from the inside out over time.”
Jiang Yichuan’s pupils dilated. “…What do you mean?”
“Actually, I’ve known who you are for a long time.” Bian Tuo snapped his fingers, and a projection appeared in the air above, displaying the identity profiles of the six people.
“The Omega admitted to the First Military Academy by exception. Your combat skills and mecha piloting are both superb. You’re the champion of two national competitions. Most importantly, you are never affected or suppressed by any pheromones, am I right?”
Jiang Yichuan wasn’t surprised that Bian Tuo knew their identities. After all, Chaoyang had said from the beginning that they were being watched the moment they entered Third System’s Planet Hertz.
“Aren’t you the same?”
She had also memorized Bian Tuo’s profile. The S-class Omega before her was also, like her, unaffected and unsuppressed by any pheromones.
“Nope,” Bian Tuo shook his head. “I am affected and suppressed by alpha pheromones. It’s just that the alpha pheromones that can affect and suppress me are extremely rare. But you’re different. You are completely unaffected by any pheromones. I imagine it’s the masterpiece of the person who destroyed your gland.”
A trace of disbelief flashed in Jiang Yichuan’s eyes. “What… what do you mean by that?”
“The person who destroyed your gland is the one who made you immune to the influence and suppression of pheromones.”
Bian Tuo’s tone was light, but his words struck Jiang Yichuan’s heart like a giant hammer.
“I… I don’t believe it!” Jiang Yichuan denied vehemently. “She was trying to kill me, how could she…?”
“If she was trying to kill you, why are you still alive now?” Bian Tuo gave a helpless smile. “If an Omega’s gland is destroyed, death is certain. But you didn’t die, which proves that person didn’t intend to kill you, but rather to help you eliminate the influence and suppression your gland brought upon you.”
Jiang Yichuan froze on the spot, her eyes wide and vacant.
After hearing Bian Tuo, Xi Chen was also dumbfounded, standing there stunned and at a loss.
The others saw the state these two were in. Although they didn’t know the full story, everything Bian Tuo had said had undoubtedly shaken their worldviews to the core.
Bian Tuo was in no mood to let Jiang Yichuan remain dazed. He pinched her chin. “Tell me, who was that person?”
Jiang Yichuan was still in shock and ignored Bian Tuo’s question.
“Tell me, who was that person?” Bian Tuo pointed to the other cage. “If you don’t tell me, I’ll torture Mu Wen Nuan to death right in front of you.”
Wen Nuan: “?? “
Focus returned to Jiang Yichuan’s eyes. They were bloodshot as she gritted out, “I’ll kill you!”
Bian Tuo sneered and threw her to the ground. “Not measuring one’s own strength. I’ll count to three. Tell me who that person is, or I’ll give Mu Wen Nuan a thousand cuts and ten thousand slices right in front of you.”
Wen Nuan: “?? “
Where did Bian Tuo get the nerve to threaten her?!
Jiang Yichuan looked as if the corners of her eyes were about to split, hissing, “You…”
“One…”
Just as Bian Tuo was about to continue, someone tapped his shoulder. He turned his head to see a bewildered-looking Wen Nuan. “What do you want?”
She was useless to him now, so Bian Tuo had no time to bother with her.
Wen Nuan touched her ear. “What was the name you just said?”
Bian Tuo waved his hand. “Don’t bother me. If you want to leave, then go. No one’s stopping you.”
His men couldn’t stop her anyway.
“No, first tell me, who was that you just called out?” Wen Nuan asked tentatively. “The person you just called was… Mu Wen Nuan?”
Bian Tuo said impatiently, “Yes, it’s Mu Wen Nuan. What? Is she your old flame12?”
Wen Nuan said in horror, “Mu Wen Nuan…!?”
Her shout made Bian Tuo’s ears ring. He said warily, “What? You know Mu Wen Nuan? Don’t tell me you want to rescue her too?”
“You captured Mu Wen Nuan?” Wen Nuan heard his words. “Where is she?”
Bian Tuo saw Chaoyang suddenly acting neurotic. “What are you trying to do?”
“Where is Mu Wen Nuan?”
Seeing Chaoyang so agitated, Jiang Yichuan’s heart tightened. She thought Mu Wen Nuan had provoked Chaoyang and asked with concern, “You’re looking for her… why?”
Wen Nuan was about to die of anxiety. “Where the hell is Mu Wen Nuan?”
Bian Tuo pointed at the Omega in the cage. “That is Mu Wen Nuan.”
Wen Nuan turned and walked to the side of the cage. With a trembling finger, she lifted the hair covering the Omega’s face and looked at a visage identical to her own.
Her eyes widened, and she immediately roared, “Lying trough13! Who the hell is this?”
The System took one look and said, in disbelief: 【Lying trough! Who the hell is this?】
