Volume Eight: Those Years When I Was an Alpha
Rose
The Third System’s Planet Hertz was one of the most depraved planets in the interstellar universe.
On this planet, there were no laws or regulations to restrain anyone, like a barbaric land of exiles. The people who survived here lived as they pleased. Here they rotted and festered with maggots; here they lost themselves in madness.
“Major Rossi, we’ve been on this planet for three days, and that Chaoyang still hasn’t contacted us. Is she messing with us?” Quan Yang said angrily, looking at the projection on his optical computer.
Ever since they had arrived on Planet Hertz at the time Major Rossi had specified to wait for Chaoyang, they had waited for three whole days without seeing a trace of this important figure.
Rossi’s brow furrowed slightly. “How could that be? Wait a moment, I’ll go contact her.”
The projection was cut off. The six of them were squeezed into a single room, quietly waiting for Major Rossi’s reply.
“I think Chaoyang is deliberately messing with us. She doesn’t want to cooperate with Tofis at all, tricking us into coming to this garbage planet to suffer.” Quan Yang’s head ached from the Omega’s pheromones wafting from the room downstairs. “Can the Omega downstairs give it a rest? Again?”
The people on this planet had no control over their pheromones. Omegas released pheromones to seduce Alphas, and Alphas released pheromones to deliberately trigger an Omega’s heat.
Arbitrary and dissolute, chaotic and filthy.
Just like the Omega in the room downstairs, releasing her jasmine-scented pheromones every day, making their group of Alphas dizzy and overwhelmed.
Moreover, the Alphas that Omega coupled with were different each day. A mixture of various scents mingled with the jasmine, driving them all nearly insane.
Xi Chen was also sickened by the jasmine scent, his brow furrowed. “At least in here there’s only a mix of two scents. If you go outside right now, all sorts of chaotic pheromones are jumbled together. You’ll feel even worse.”
When Quan Yang thought of the scene they had faced upon first arriving on this planet, his face turned green and he felt a wave of nausea.
“I really envy Chu Luo right now. Being a Beta is pretty good,” Shi Jiayang’s face paled a few shades.
Chu Luo pushed up the glasses on the bridge of his nose and smiled. “This is the one area where I’m a bit better off than you all.”
Shi Yaqi[ looked at the Omega by the window, lifted her chin, and said, “Jiang Yichuan over there isn’t reacting at all. You bunch of Alphas have really poor physical constitutions.”
Quan Yang glanced at Jiang Yichuan and said helplessly, “Who can blame her? She doesn’t react to any pheromones.”
“That’s not the same,” Xi Chen explained. “Yichuan just doesn’t react to any pheromones, it’s not that she can’t smell them. So, she has more endurance than we do.”
Jiang Yichuan walked over and handed them the thing in her hand.
Quan Yang looked at the object, which resembled a lipstick case, and said speechlessly, “What are you doing? You’re still trying to put on makeup at a time like this?”
Shi Yaqi took it and opened it. “What shade is this? The newest… huh?”
She took a deep breath. The cold, sharp fragrance instantly cleared her mind, and the discomfort from the jasmine pheromones downstairs was immediately alleviated.
It was like mint but with a special note that was hard to describe, truly unique.
“What is this?”
Jiang Yichuan said, “Purifying Inhaler.”
“What’s that?” Quan Yang was completely baffled. He watched as Xi Chen took the small tube and sniffed it. “What does it do?”
Shi Yaqi said excitedly, “This Purifying Inhaler can mitigate pheromonal interference. The effect is immediate. Want to try?”
“Really?” Quan Yang took it and inhaled twice. His mind and body instantly felt much more refreshed.
He passed the inhaler to Shi Jiayang and looked at Jiang Yichuan. “How come I’ve never seen something like this before?”
There were various products on the market for pheromone defense and suppression, such as inhibitors1 and blocker patches2, but these agents were expensive and had low production yields. Only the larger planets could produce them; smaller planets had no way of obtaining such advanced medicine to deal with pheromonal interference and leakage.
Just like on this Planet Hertz, everyone’s pheromones were in chaos. They simply didn’t have the qualifications to obtain high-level agents like inhibitors and blocker patches to control their pheromones.
They had never even heard of the Purifying Inhaler in Jiang Yichuan’s hand, let alone that such a thing existed, and its effect was instantaneous.
Jiang Yichuan took back the Purifying Inhaler. “It was a gift.”
Quan Yang’s eyes lit up, and he sidled closer. “Who gave it to you? Can you ask them to make another one? I can buy it, any price is fine.”
Shi Yaqi raised her hand. “I want one too, to bring back for my little brother.”
She looked at Xi Chen and saw he had no reaction. “You don’t want one?”
Xi Chen shook his head but didn’t speak.
Jiang Yichuan’s expression was cold. “The person is dead. They can’t make any more.”
Quan Yang looked embarrassed. “…My apologies.”
Chu Luo took another look at the inhaler in Jiang Yichuan’s hand. He raised his wrist, displaying the message from his optical computer. “A message from Major Rossi.”
“Major Rossi says Chaoyang will cooperate with us from the shadows. The reason we came to Planet Hertz is that there will be an auction here in two days. The leader of Evil Ghost and their internal members will be attending. When the time comes, we will coordinate from the inside and outside to catch Evil Ghost in one net3.”
Xi Chen mused, “So you’re saying Chaoyang has been on Planet Hertz this whole time, and might even be right beside us?”
Chu Luo nodded. “From Major Rossi’s reply, that’s the meaning.”
“Could the Omega downstairs be Chaoyang?” Shi Jiayang had barely finished his guess before he received a harsh smack from his older sister.
“Did the jasmine scent short-circuit your damn brain?” Shi Yaqi hit him. “Chaoyang is an S-class Alpha. Even if you were to transform into an Omega, she would never be one.”
Shi Jiayang: “….”
“Then where could she be hiding to watch us?” Quan Yang asked curiously.
“There,” Jiang Yichuan pointed at the window. “In the alley across the street.”
“What?” Several of them stood at the window and looked down, and sure enough, they saw a figure in the opposite alley. The person wore a black and gold mask, had a slender figure, and a familiar high-collared trench coat, standing in the shadows.
When Quan Yang saw the mask, he exclaimed, “Holy crap, it really is Chaoyang!”
The figure seemed to notice them and even deliberately stood under a streetlight, allowing them a clearer view.
“Chaoyang knows we’re watching her?” Shi Yaqi said in surprise.
“She knows,” Jiang Yichuan said.
“Why don’t we call her up?” Shi Jiayang said eagerly. “Didn’t she say we need to coordinate from the inside and out? Shouldn’t we discuss a plan?”
Xi Chen said coolly, “Chaoyang never makes plans. She has always just done whatever she wants. Perhaps when the auction starts the day after tomorrow, all we’ll need to do is assist her.”
After all, compared to Chaoyang’s strength, theirs was simply a small shaman seeing a great shaman4.
“That simple?” Quan Yang asked.
Chu Luo shook his head. “Not simple. The Evil Ghost leader won’t be that easy to catch, and…” He looked at the pedestrians walking below the window. “…our tracks may have been exposed.”
“What?” Shi Jiayang said, astonished. “We’ve been exposed?”
“From the moment we entered this place, it’s very likely we’ve been noticed.”
They were completely out of place here; it would be difficult not to attract attention.
Chu Luo pushed up his glasses and sighed. “This is probably the main reason Chaoyang has delayed revealing herself to us. We’ve been exposed now. If she exposes herself too, I’m afraid she won’t be able to lure out the person behind the scenes.”
Xi Chen had also noticed the people watching them, his eyes narrowing. “It seems we can only wait and see how things develop.”
“She’s gone,” Jiang Yichuan said.
Xi Chen was puzzled. “What?”
Jiang Yichuan tapped on the window. “Chaoyang left.”
“The people watching us from downstairs are gone too.” Quan Yang had just seen several suspicious individuals, but they had vanished in the blink of an eye.
Chu Luo turned to walk out. “Chaoyang must have dealt with them. Let’s go take a look.”
“Okay.”
They immediately ran out of the hotel, splitting up to search for Chaoyang.
Jiang Yichuan walked towards the mouth of the alley where Chaoyang had been standing. She looked into the pitch-black alley; the streetlight at the entrance couldn’t penetrate it at all. The weak light flickered, adding a trace of eeriness.
She stepped into the alley until the shadows completely swallowed her figure.
The next second, Jiang Yichuan raised her right hand to block an incoming arm. The force of the blow knocked her back two steps, her heel hitting the wall. Jiang Yichuan twisted her body to dodge the person’s attack, her right hand whipping around to clamp onto their shoulder, intending to break their arm.
The person instantly reacted to her move and immediately countered.
Sensing a touch at her waist, Jiang Yichuan immediately arched her back, trying to leap out of the person’s grasp. But before she could react, the person rushed forward again, their palm seemingly carrying fire that burned the soft flesh of her waist through her clothes, making her tremble.
A strange sensation surged through her body. Jiang Yichuan was momentarily distracted and was pinned against the wall by the person. Her legs were forcefully separated, and both her hands were locked against the wall with a single one of their hands, rendering her immobile.
“Heh heh…“
Laughter sounded by her ear, low, husky, and magnetic, seeming to carry a heat even more scorching than their palm, turning Jiang Yichuan’s earlobe red.
“What are you laughing at?” she said angrily.
“Your fighting technique is good, you just lack practical combat experience.”
Jiang Yichuan’s brow furrowed tightly. “So?”
She moved her wrist. “You caught me just to lecture me?”
It was too dark in the alley for her to make out the person’s features. She could only smell the faint, fresh scent on them. It was very soft and light; she felt like she had smelled it somewhere before but couldn’t recall where.
“True, lecturing you isn’t the main goal.”
Jiang Yichuan felt the person place a hand on her neck. The pull-tab of her jacket was tugged, and the zipper was drawn down. The soft sound of the zipper was exceptionally abrupt and clear in the quiet alley.
The zipper suddenly snagged in the middle, a location that was impossible to ignore and exceptionally troublesome.
“Mm, a bit… the zipper is stuck here, it’s not easy to pull down.” The person even gave an embarrassed laugh. “You get what I mean, right?”
I really don’t want to get it!
But Jiang Yichuan understood what the person meant. She gritted her teeth. “What… exactly are you trying to do?”
“Can’t you tell?” The person chuckled. “Widen… clothes… untie… belt… ah?” (This is a normal action, just a joke, not meant to be suggestive in any way)
The person fiddled with the stuck zipper and continued to pull it down.
The person’s hand reached out, as if searching for something, or perhaps…
She’s just being a damn hooligan!
Jiang Yichuan took a deep breath and gritted her teeth. “What? The great bounty hunter Chaoyang fell for me, an Omega, at first sight, and now you want to be the hegemon-king forcibly drawing a bow5?”
“Oh, you recognized me?” Wen Nuan said cheerfully. “The little lady is quite alert. That’s a good thing.”
“So… mmph… get your hand away!” Jiang Yichuan said angrily.
“Oops, I touched you by accident, my apologies.” Wen Nuan twisted her wrist and felt the inside pocket of her jacket. “A gift for our first meeting.”
Jiang Yichuan could feel her putting something in her inner jacket pocket. “What is it?”
“From now on, use the communicators I’m giving you to contact me.” Wen Nuan raised her hand and caressed Jiang Yichuan’s cheek. “And there’s another little gadget, consider it an apology gift to make you happy.”
“You…” The pressure on her body loosened. Jiang Yichuan’s vision blurred, and Chaoyang instantly vanished from the alley.
Jiang Yichuan ran out of the alley and looked around, but there was no trace of Chaoyang.
She looked down at her unzipped jacket and took out the things Chaoyang had given her from the inner pocket: six implantable communication chips and a single crimson rose petal.

Wen Nuan stood on a rooftop, watching Jiang Yichuan dazing on the street below. The corners of her mouth hooked up, and she smiled.
