Volume Eight: Those Years When I Was an Alpha
Chaoyang1
Planet Tofis2.
Federation3 Building A, 13th Floor, Large Conference Room.
Dozens of people sat in rows in the conference room, their expressions grave as they watched the content on the large screen. Every one of them had their brows tightly locked, wearing looks of deep bitterness and great hatred. Only the two people sitting in the middle of the front row had calm expressions, as if the content on the screen was a trivial matter unworthy of a reaction.
Major Rossi’s4 gaze swept quickly across the front row as he asked in a deep voice, “The above is all the information regarding the interstellar pirate gang—Evil Ghost5. Is there anything else you wish to know about them?”
The crowd looked at each other in blank dismay. They exchanged hushed, chirping whispers, appearing troubled and conflicted.
“Silence!” Major Rossi’s face was stern as he slapped the table. “If you have questions, say them directly. Do not discuss them privately and disrupt order!”
The conference room instantly became so quiet not even a crow or sparrow could be heard6.
Seeing that no one wanted to ask anything, Major Rossi’s brow furrowed. Just as he was about to speak, he saw Quan Yang7, dressed in the deep blue uniform of the Bali Advanced Military Academy8, raise his hand from the front row.
Rossi’s tightly furrowed brow relaxed, his expression softening slightly. “Speak directly.”
Quan Yang stood up, looked at the images on the screen, and raised a question: “This student has heard that the true identity of this Evil Ghost pirate gang’s leader is an Omega9, is that correct?”
The crowd was filled with astonishment.
Rossi raised an eyebrow. “How did you come to know this?”
Quan Yang shrugged. “This student has his own ways of finding out things he wants to know. Major Rossi only needs to answer whether the question this student just asked is correct.”
The family backing Quan Yang was powerful; it wasn’t surprising that he could find out the Evil Ghost’s leader was an Omega.
“That is correct,” Rossi’s gaze swept over the crowd, his voice forceful and resonant. “Student10 Quan Yang is right. The leader of Evil Ghost is indeed an Omega, and his spiritual power11 and perceptual ability12 are both S-class.”
The crowd erupted in an uproar.
Hearing nearly everyone gasp, Quan Yang glanced at the person to his right and sneered, “What’s so surprising about the Evil Ghost leader being an S-class Omega? Don’t we have an S-class Omega representing the First Federal Military Academy right here among us?”
Everyone paused, then suddenly realized who Quan Yang was talking about.
Their gazes focused on the center of the front row, where two students representing the First Federal Military Academy sat.
S-class Omega Jiang Yichuan13 and S-class Alpha14 Xi Chen15.
Jiang Yichuan shot a sideways glance at Quan Yang. “Got a problem?”
Quan Yang threw up his hands. “I’m just curious, between Student Jiang, who is also an S-class Omega, and this Evil Ghost leader, who is stronger?”
Jiang Yichuan lifted her eyelids, stating coolly, “At the very least, I’m stronger than you.”
Quan Yang: “….”
“What? You don’t accept it?” Jiang Yichuan stood up, slowly unbuttoning her black uniform jacket.
With a mocking expression, she loosened the black silk scarf around her neck. “Want to take this outside and practice?”
Thinking of Jiang Yichuan’s combat record, Quan Yang’s face immediately showed reluctance. “An S-class bullying an A-class, is that interesting?”
“But you’re an Alpha, and I’m an Omega. What are you afraid of?” The corner of Jiang Yichuan’s mouth hooked up, her tone full of provocation. “Afraid I’ll beat you to death?”
Quan Yang clenched his fists and said angrily, “You—”
“Enough!” Major Rossi interjected. “This is the Federation Building conference room, not your training grounds or a fighting arena. If you’re that eager to fight, how about I lock you up in prison to fight to your heart’s content?”
“Quan Yang, stop messing around. Sit down.” Chu Luo16 grabbed Quan Yang’s arm and pulled him back into his seat.
Chu Luo gave Jiang Yichuan a meaningful look and nodded. “My apologies.”
Jiang Yichuan’s gaze was placid as she said flatly, “Do fewer things you’ll have to apologize for in the future.”
“You—” Provoked by Jiang Yichuan, Quan Yang was about to stand up again but was pushed back down by Chu Luo.
“Yichuan, sit down and listen to the Major,” Xi Chen said, handing over the uniform jacket Jiang Yichuan had taken off.
Jiang Yichuan took the jacket, sat down, and crossed her legs, looking at Major Rossi with a cold expression. Even though Quan Yang was staring at her, she didn’t spare him a single glance.
“Major Rossi, since the Evil Ghost’s leader is an Omega, can’t we use an Alpha’s pheromones17 to suppress him?” a sergeant first class from the back row asked, raising his hand.
Jiang Yichuan’s brow furrowed, and she glanced back at the B-class Alpha sergeant who had just asked the question.
Xi Chen looked at Jiang Yichuan, and seeing her sullen face, he said softly, “Don’t mind it.”
“I’m fine.” She cracked her knuckles, her eyes dark and profound. “After all, it is one possible solution.”
Alphas were naturally suppressive towards Omegas; the stronger the Alpha, the greater their ability to suppress and control an Omega.
This suffocating hierarchical suppression was nauseating every time she thought about it, yet there was nothing to be done.
Xi Chen said no more.
“We have naturally tried the method you proposed, but…” Major Rossi’s expression darkened. “No Alpha’s pheromones have any effect on Bian Tuo18.”
Bian Tuo was the leader of Evil Ghost.
The crowd panicked. “…What?”
“The major planets have previously accessed every pheromone in the databases to try and suppress Bian Tuo. As a result, not a single one could trigger a reaction in him and successfully suppress him,” Major Rossi sighed.
“Then isn’t Bian Tuo just like Jiang Yichuan? Unaffected by Alpha pheromones,” someone said in astonishment.
Everyone’s eyes turned to Jiang Yichuan. They first came to know her during the Tofis National Competition. That Omega, representing the First Federal Military Academy, fought her way directly into the finals. Unaffected by any Alpha’s pheromones, she used her superb fighting skills and mecha19 combat ability to become that year’s champion. Even last year, this same Omega won the championship again, which is why she was specially approved by the Federal Military Academy to join this “Annihilation” operation.
This Omega had appeared too suddenly. It was heard that she had previously pretended to be a Beta20 to study in the Alpha building of the military academy. Later, she accidentally exposed her true identity, but the academy made an exception and allowed this Omega to continue studying in the Alpha building.
And this time, the people organized by Planet Tofis to participate in the “Annihilation” operation were almost all A-class or higher Alphas, with the exception of Chu Luo from Bali Academy, who was a Beta, and Jiang Yichuan, the S-class Omega.
One must know, such a crucial mission would not normally be assigned to an Omega, who were known for being gentle and delicate. If, during the mission, an Omega couldn’t control themselves and entered their heat period21 prematurely, it would have a fatal impact on the Alphas, leading to mission failure.
For this “Annihilation” operation, the three major academies of Planet Tofis had each sent two elite students. After a selection and consideration process covering all aspects, six people were ultimately chosen to participate in today’s training session at the Federation Building.
They had no objections or doubts about the people chosen from the other academies, but the students recommended by the First Military Academy were a real eye-opener.
Everyone believed that an S-class Omega like Jiang Yichuan shouldn’t be in a dangerous mission with nine chances of death and one of life22, but should instead be well-protected by the Federation and the Empire23. Moreover, and most importantly, she also seemed to be one of the prospective fiancée candidates the Emperor had intentionally selected for the Imperial Crown Prince, Xi Chen.
Therefore, regardless of her status, Jiang Yichuan should not be participating in the “Annihilation” operation. Yet today, she had indeed appeared at the Federation Building to take part in the training.
Presumably, this Omega’s strength had already gained the attention of the higher-ups. Furthermore, she didn’t react to any Alpha’s pheromones; even Xi Chen, who was also S-class, couldn’t affect her. The compatibility of their pheromones was also not high, which led the Empire to only consider this Omega as one of several backup fiancée candidates.
And she had never had a heat-induced rampage. At least, those who knew Jiang Yichuan had never seen this Omega go into heat. Even in the national competitions from the year before and last year, she was neither suppressed by Alpha pheromones nor had her heat period triggered prematurely by them.
Moreover, this Omega was cold and self-controlled to the extreme, almost to the point of being unfeeling. The gentleness and vulnerability that other Omegas possessed were almost invisible in her. Jiang Yichuan faced everyone with a cold expression, and towards any provocation or teasing, she would act rather than speak an extra word. This Omega was as cold as ice and as violent as a raging fire.
Right now, the only person who could get a slightly better expression from her was Xi Chen, sitting beside her.
Major Rossi looked at Jiang Yichuan. “Indeed, Student Jiang Yichuan, just like Bian Tuo, has no reaction to Alpha pheromones.”
Xi Chen cast a meaningful glance at Jiang Yichuan, who had her head lowered and wasn’t speaking.
“Therefore, the Federation and the Empire intend to form a seven-person team to carry out the ‘Annihilation’ mission and destroy this pirate gang,” Major Rossi said, looking at the six people in the front row. “You are all new faces in the interstellar universe. Evil Ghost are an unknown to you. You will have the support of the most powerful resources from the Tofis Federation and the Empire. The fighting techniques, mecha combat, and military operations you are now learning have all been approved by the Marshal24 and the Emperor. The Federation and the Empire believe in you and will give you their greatest support. We hope you will not let the Federation and the Empire down.”
“Yes, sir—” the crowd shouted with conviction.
“Major Rossi, you just mentioned a seven-person team, but the three major academies each sent two students, which only adds up to six. Who is the seventh person?” someone asked.
Major Rossi pressed a button on the remote in his hand. A person appeared on the large screen. This person was slender and lean but not frail. A simple high-collared trench coat was worn by her with a cool and dashing25 flair. A black and gold mask concealed her face, revealing only her eyes, which were as clear as a river of stars.
Beside the figure was their introductory information.
Everyone took one look and gasped.
If one were to say there were only three powers in the interstellar universe that could contend with the Evil Ghost pirate gang, one was Planet Tofis, and another was Planet Krall26. However, Krall had recently been sneak-attacked by Evil Ghost, resulting in the destruction of three of its smaller planets, the injury and death of many Krall citizens, and the leaking of important internal Federation data.
The final power was the Bounty Hunter Guild, and within the guild, the one most capable of fighting Evil Ghost was the bounty hunter who had risen to prominence in the last six months—Chaoyang.
Evil Ghost had never gotten the upper hand against her. Several times, their strongholds on various planets had been uprooted by her, provoking Evil Ghost to issue a kill order: anyone who killed Chaoyang would receive one hundred million star coins27 and an A-class crystal mine.
Such a great temptation moved many pirates and other bounty hunters, but alas, this Chaoyang was ruthless and her whereabouts were unpredictable. While being hunted, she could still destroy Evil Ghost bases, enraging them into continuously issuing kill orders. Unfortunately, no one dared to accept them anymore, as all the people who had gone after Chaoyang before had ended up dead, their bodies ultimately dumped on Evil Ghost’ home base, Planet Tarakam28, a direct slap in the face to Evil Ghost.
The crowd never expected that such an independent and exceptionally powerful bounty hunter would actually participate in the “Annihilation” operation organized by Planet Tofis. Wasn’t this using great talent for a small purpose29?!
“I can’t believe our planet actually managed to invite Chaoyang,” Shi Jiayang30 exclaimed.
“I remember Planet Krall once invited Chaoyang, but was refused,” Shi Yaqi31 said, looking at the person on the screen with a charming smile. “Little brother, do you guess this Chaoyang is a man or a woman?”
Shi Jiayang saw his sister’s act and said helplessly, “Who cares if she’s a man or a woman? She’s an S-class Alpha. Are you planning to pursue an AA relationship with her?”
“That’s true, ha.”
Shi Jiayang thought his sister had seen reason and was about to praise her for being sensible when he heard her say something that made him roll his eyes.
“Don’t be so narrow-minded, don’t get hung up on gender. Who cares if she’s a man or a woman, as long as they’re beautiful and good in bed.”
Shi Jiayang: “…”
She’s truly hopeless.
“Shi Yaqi, I really have to hand it to you. After ruining our academy’s Omegas, you’re now planning to make a move on Chaoyang?” Quan Yang said speechlessly. “Let’s not even talk about an A-A relationship, aren’t you afraid Chaoyang will snap your neck?”
This bounty hunter’s signature moves were snapping necks and crushing skulls, a single fatal blow.
Shi Yaqi’s lips curved into a smile. “To die under a peony, even as a ghost one is romantic32, you know.”
Quan Yang gave her a thumbs up. “…You’re badass33. If you’ve got the guts, go hit on Jiang Yichuan.”
He pointed at Jiang Yichuan and whispered, “If you can win her over, how about I give you ten thousand star coins?”
“I’m not interested in seeking abuse,” Shi Yaqi said, glancing at Jiang Yichuan. “If you’ve got the guts, why don’t you do it?”
Quan Yang made a ‘tsk’ sound. “I would never be interested in such a boring Omega. Other Omegas are gentle and soft, but her… tsk tsk…”
“Alas, it’s a pity you can’t beat her,” Shi Yaqi said, looking at her red nails as if speaking casually. “Why do I seem to remember a certain someone getting beaten unconscious by Jiang Yichuan in the competition?”
Quan Yang became angry from embarrassment. “You—”
Shi Yaqi stuck her tongue out at him. “Hmph, I think you’re the one who’s gentle and soft.”
“Quiet down,” Chu Luo said, holding Quan Yang back. “Do you want to be punished by Major Rossi?”
Quan Yang gritted his teeth and glared at Shi Yaqi. “Just you wait!”
“I’d be your grandson if I were afraid,” Shi Yaqi retorted sarcastically.
Major Rossi pretended not to see the little movements happening right under his nose. He cleared his throat. “Are there any other questions? If not, this meeting is dismissed. The team for the ‘Annihilation’ mission is hereby designated ‘God’. None of the information from today’s meeting is to be disclosed. If it is discovered that any of you have leaked information from this meeting, the Federal Army and the Imperial Guard, upon discovery, will not listen to explanations and will execute the traitor on the spot.”
Everyone’s expression turned solemn as they replied in deep voices, “Yes, sir—”
Planet B2-753.
Miserable flames, ruined walls. All around Wen Nuan was the black ash left behind by scorching. A whirlwind kicked up the dust, making one choke and sneeze.
“Achoo—” Wen Nuan took off her mask and rubbed her nose.
“You are…?” The Beta collapsed on the ground looked at Wen Nuan’s face in disbelief, blood continuously spilling from his mouth as he roared indistinctly, “You’re actually… the wanted…”
Wen Nuan lowered her eyes, a flash of coldness within them. Under the Beta’s terrified gaze, she kicked him away. His broken body slammed directly into a stone wall that had been demolished by cannon fire.
The Beta sprayed a mouthful of blood and died with a grievance34.
Wen Nuan put her mask back on. She hadn’t expected there to be someone on this small planet who recognized her; it was truly a bit of a surprise.
She looked at the fleeing crowd, then turned and left amidst the billowing smoke and dust.
【You’ve been back in this mission world for over half a year. Are you still not planning to go back to Tofis to see the female lead?】 the System asked, its face full of worry as it looked at the persistently high blackening value.
“Going back now would be no different from provoking her. Besides, my current identity isn’t very convenient. I’m afraid I’ll be arrested the moment I return to Tofis.” Wen Nuan took a cigarette from her pocket and started smoking.
Having been back in this mission world for over half a year, her smoking addiction had relapsed.
The System sighed. 【Who’s to blame but you for being so extreme back then? You know, what you did that year nearly caused this entire mission world to collapse.】
“I don’t regret it,” Wen Nuan exhaled a puff of smoke. “For some things, someone has to be the one to start a precedent.”
The hierarchical division in this mission world was too cold and ruthless, strict and cruel, leaving people no room to resist. Even though the female lead wanted to desperately fight against the oppression this cold world forced upon her, she still paid a tragic and irreversible price.
This price, rather than letting someone else give it, was better given to the female lead by her own hand.
The optical computer on her wrist flashed three times. Wen Nuan opened it to see a message from Major Rossi of Tofis.
Rossi: [Your Excellency35 Chaoyang, the team has been assembled. Where shall we rendezvous?]
Wen Nuan tapped the screen and replied.
Chaoyang: [Star Calendar, the 25th, 5 PM. Third System’s Planet Hertz. #Coordinates#]
Seeing the location Wen Nuan sent, Rossi’s brow furrowed.
Rossi: [Understood.]
After reading it, Jiang Yichuan closed the message from Major Rossi. She looked up at the ranking board on the wall. This board recorded many of the outstanding students since the First Military Academy’s founding. The higher one’s school points, the higher the rank.
She looked at the students on the board; each person had a name, a photo, and a score displayed. She was in third place, Xi Chen was second, and the first-place position was blank, with only a score of “6666”36 points hanging there.
Three whole years had passed, and no one had ever surpassed this score. Because the person who ranked first had once participated in the war between the Tofis military and the Zerg, and had played a crucial role in it. She had even killed the Zerg Queen who led them at the time with a single blow, causing the damage in the war to be drastically reduced. For this, she received the planet’s highest honor.
She was the only student since the founding of the First Federal Military Academy to have a total score exceeding 5000 and to possess an S-class military merit medal jointly issued by the Federal Marshal and the Imperial Emperor.
Boundless glory.
It was just a pity that was all in the past.
Now, this person had become a taboo for the First Military Academy and even for Planet Tofis, because she had committed a monstrous crime. The charge was murdering Omegas, a crime considered heinous and wicked in the interstellar universe.
Just as the Federation and the Empire were about to punish this person, she broke out of prison and fled Planet Tofis. Planet Tofis, in conjunction with the federations and empires of other major planets, put out a warrant for her, but she was nowhere to be found, as if this person had never appeared in the interstellar universe.
But only those who had been in contact with that person knew that the genius student truly existed.
So dazzling, so brilliant, like the hottest and most splendid sun in the universe.
Jiang Yichuan touched the back of her neck, hatred nearly overflowing from her eyes. Her thin lips parted slightly. “Wen Nuan, what a pity, isn’t it? I didn’t die. Are you disappointed?”
She raised a hand to touch the score in the highest position and murmured, “If you are still alive, then try coming back to kill me, won’t you?”
At the same time.
The System exclaimed: 【The female lead’s blackening value has risen. Current blackening value is 9.8!】
The fingers Wen Nuan held her cigarette with trembled, and the hot ash seared her, making her heart shudder.
The author has something to say:
Wen Nuan: Another death-level opening.
Female Lead: You did it but won’t admit it?
