Volume Six: The Years I Wasn’t Human
Warmth
Sang Er carried her back to the room and held her in her arms, continuously saying in her ear, “I’m here, don’t be scared anymore.”
Wen Nuan looked at her own still-trembling hands. She could feel her four limbs and hundred bones slowly stiffening, her blood stopping its flow, and even her heart becoming numb and stopping.
It was as if she could hear the urgent sound of a torrential downpour and the whistling of a cold wind in her ears.
She thought she would never remember that nightmare, the nightmare that had brought her to the brink of collapse several times, making her want to end her own life.
She had clearly forgotten it, or rather, she had hidden it away well.
She clearly thought she was already very strong, would no longer be affected by that nightmare, yet she suddenly discovered that she was, in fact, still unable to withstand a single strike, only able to be a weak person, shrinking in a corner, begging bitterly.
“Little Ears, I’m so cold.” Wen Nuan was still so cold, so cold that her soul was about to become weightless.
Tears moistened her eye sockets. Wen Nuan couldn’t control her own tears; they flowed into her mouth, exceptionally bitter.
She hugged Sang Er, almost as if begging, “Please, please…. let me get warm, okay?”
So cold, she was really so cold.
Sang Er hugged her tightly, rubbing her body. “Mm-hmm, you’ll get warm right away.”
Wen Nuan buried her face in the crook of her shoulder, tears dripping onto her shoulder.
They were clearly so light, yet they made Sang Er’s heart tremble along with them.
“Don’t cry, Wen Nuan, don’t cry…” Sang Er could feel the person in her arms was still trembling.
Her body was clearly warm, but her soul seemed to be ice-cold.
She mobilized her fire-element special ability, hiding it beneath her skin and flesh, causing her body temperature to gradually rise.
Sang Er had her press closer, asking, “How about this? Wen Nuan, do you feel a little warmer this way?”
Wen Nuan touched her skin with both hands, feeling a scorching heat. As if she had gotten a chance to breathe, she sighed, “…So warm, so comfortable.”
In that instant, it was as if she had obtained a spark of fire that could dispel the cold and the darkness.
Sang Er blinked, glanced at her own clothes and then at Wen Nuan’s reaction.
She took off all of her own clothes, and also took off all of Wen Nuan’s clothes, the two of them naked/bodied embracing and entwining, so close they could not be separated.
“Wen Nuan, it’s not cold anymore, you won’t be cold again this way.” Sang Er stabilized the release of her special ability, holding the temperature tightly.
Her hands rubbed unceasingly, trying to generate heat through friction to make Wen Nuan more comfortable.
Wen Nuan closed her eyes, her eyelids trembling, and hugged Sang Er tightly.
Her body trembled slightly, and she uncontrollably began to cry loudly, crying out, “I’m so scared, I’m so scared….”
She watched that person holding a needle, piercing her skin again and again, disregarding her pleas for mercy and her cries, very attentively and focused on completing his work.
She was clearly crying so loudly, begging for mercy so loudly, yet he just wouldn’t listen. And her mother stood at the doorway, watching her coldly, as if looking at a dead thing.
Wen Nuan seemed to be snatched away by the nightmare once again. She begged mournfully, “Please… please.. let me go…”
“Mama… save me… please… save me….”
“Save me… save me….”
Sang Er stroked her hair, her eyes red, and continuously coaxed her softly, “Don’t be afraid, Wen Nuan, Little Ears is here, Little Ears is by your side, don’t be afraid, Little Ears will help you drive away the bad guys…”
“I’m here, I’m here, Wen Nuan. Little Ears will save you, Little Ears will save you.”
She pressed close to her ear, saying it to Wen Nuan over and over again, afraid she wouldn’t hear.
Wen Nuan hugged Sang Er tightly, placing her calls as if unheard1. She kept repeating those few sentences, pained and sorrowful, despairing and helpless.
Sang Er lifted her head and saw her face was already covered in flowing tears. The tears submerged her clear eyes, making them like a bottomless sea, her inner heart impossible to see clearly.
Sang Er wiped away her tears, saw her panic and trepidation, and heard her pleas and calls.
“Save me… save me…”
On the night of that day, the torrential rain was mixed with a biting cold wind. The drops, each as heavy as a giant rock, smashed down on her densely, beating her until she was a bloody mess.
It was as if she couldn’t find her hands and feet anymore. She felt her soul shatter, she heard her heart being pierced, and it seemed she could no longer feel warmth.
She was like a corpse that died with its eyes open2, letting her stepfather manipulate her as he pleased.
She gradually stopped feeling pain. Even if her fingers were stained with blood, it couldn’t dye red her already pitch-black, numb, and vacant eyes.
Her own birth mother stood at the doorway, watching everything happening in the room with a cold and indifferent expression. Their four eyes clearly met, yet it was as if they were separated by the edge of the sky and the corner of the sea3.
Her incessant pleas and cries only resulted in the man’s actions becoming even more fierce and vicious.
Her legs were suddenly pried apart, and the man’s needle pierced fiercely into her self-respect, into her bones, into her soul.
For a whole night, it was as if she were being forced to turn bad, beginning to rot and breed maggots from the depths of her heart, then slowly gnawing at her soul and □□ from the inside out. Her body seemed to emit a rotting smell.
It really smelled awful.
That’s why she liked being wreathed in smoke, as if it could cover up some of her rotting smell, and she could still live like a person in the sunlight.
Sang Er watched as Wen Nuan’s gaze grew increasingly hollow, like a dead corpse, as if she had even stopped breathing.
“Wen Nuan…?” Sang Er shook her body, her nervous voice cracking. “Don’t scare me, don’t scare me, Wen Nuan?”
Sang Er looked at Wen Nuan’s pale lips and thought of Wen Nuan’s panting when she had kissed her that time.
She lowered her head and kissed those trembling lips, lightly taking Wen Nuan’s lower lip between her own, wanting to rouse her.
To make her forget the terror, so she could only feel the tenderness of this moment.
She began to copy the way Wen Nuan had kissed her last time, feeling her calmed heartbeat gradually begin to race. She wanted her to respond.
Finally——
Sang Er was fiercely resisted by Wen Nuan, as the guest reversed the role and became the host4.
This sudden, storm-like response left Sang Er with no time to position her hands. There was no time to swallow their saliva; their tongue/s could only entwine and churn.
Her mind went blank. She could only obediently close her eyes and press tightly against Wen Nuan, allowing her to feel her temperature, so she would no longer be ice-cold.
Wen Nuan’s consciousness gradually returned. She looked at Sang Er under her body; she had already been worn out by her to the point of panting.
She lowered her head, kissed her lightly, and said with a trembling voice, “…I’m sorry.”
Sang Er was a bit disoriented from the ordeal. She held Wen Nuan, stroking her back, still mumbling, “It’s not scary anymore, it’s not scary anymore, Wen Nuan…”
“Little Ears is here, Little Ears will help you drive away the bad guys, Little Ears is here…”
“You’re not cold anymore, not cold anymore, you hug Little Ears, Little Ears will make you warm,” she hugged Wen Nuan tightly, comforting her unceasingly, “Little Ears warms you, Little Ears warms you…”
Wen Nuan closed her eyes. The pain in her heart spread instantly, and the burning sensation in her chest grew more intense. That rose became more vibrant and colorful. It no longer hid in a filthy5 place that never saw the light, was no longer pitch-black and dim, and no longer emitted a rotting smell.
It turned out, the “warmth” she had been searching for for so long had always been by her side.
She caressed Sang Er’s face, the fear in her heart slowly receding under Sang Er’s comfort and scorching heat. “…Little Ears?”
Sang Er blinked, her eyes brightening a little. She looked at Wen Nuan and saw she was still crying. She couldn’t help but cry too, sobbing, “Mm, I’m here.”
“Can you… never… leave me?”
Can you appear by her side when she cries for help, hold her in your arms, and warm her.
Can you tell her that you will always be there……
Sang Er nodded and said, “Okay, Little Ears will never leave Wen Nuan, not even in death.”
“I love you, Sang Er, I love you so much.”
Wen Nuan kissed her tremblingly, her tone serious, her attitude sincere, just like praying for a god to show mercy.
Sang Er couldn’t bear to hear her speak like that. She cried as she responded to her, the love between them spilling out from between their lips and teeth.
“I love you too, Wen Nuan.”
It turns out, when you asked me if I liked you, what I actually wanted to say more was that I love you.
