Volume Six: The Years I Wasn’t Human
Experiment
Wen Nuan looked at that pair of very serious black pupils, and the words that had reached her lips were forcefully held back.
“…Sleep.” She patted her.
No hurry. The one thing she doesn’t lack is time; she has plenty of time to bend1 Sang Er.
Sang Er saw that Wen Nuan was sleepy and immediately shut her mouth. Just as she was about to turn over to lie flat and sleep, a pair of hands suddenly reached around her waist, and a soft body squeezed into her embrace, making her slightly cool body become scorching hot.
“…Wen Nuan, you… what is this?” Sang Er asked, looking at the person in her arms, at a complete loss.
Wen Nuan buried her face in Sang Er’s collarbone, her voice muffled. “I have a bad habit when I sleep; I like to hug things.”
Sang Er had never slept with Wen Nuan and didn’t know about this habit. “Then what did you hug when you slept by yourself before?”
She had never seen any dolls or pillows in Wen Nuan’s room, either, ah?
“I hug the quilt to sleep.”
Sang Er was just about to give the quilt to Wen Nuan for her to hug when she heard her say pitifully, “As a result, I had no quilt to cover me, and the next day I caught a cold. I had a fever, a headache, and my body ached. It was especially uncomfortable, very miserable.”
Sang Er paused, then unfolded the quilt and covered Wen Nuan. “…Your constitution is not good, you can’t catch a cold. You should sleep covered by the quilt.”
“Then from now on, can I hug you to sleep, okay?” Wen Nuan lifted her head from her embrace. “If I don’t hug something, I can’t fall asleep.”
Sang Er didn’t dare to look at Wen Nuan’s eyes. Her gaze shifted away in a bit of a panic. She pulled Wen Nuan back into her embrace and responded in a low voice, “…Mhm, sleep.”
Wen Nuan hugged her tightly. “Little Ears, you’re so good.”
The corners of Sang Er’s mouth lifted slightly. She stroked Wen Nuan’s back just as Wen Nuan had stroked hers. “Mhm.”
Only good to you.
System picking its nose: 【Host, you’re so sao2.】
This series of operations could compete with the You Jiayi of that year.
“Don’t care if I’m sao or not, I’ll bend her first.”
Wen Nuan could feel that Sang Er was different toward her, but Sang Er was too simple and pure; she fundamentally didn’t understand what liking someone was. She regarded all of Wen Nuan’s ambiguity, hints, and intimate probing as natural contact between girls.
But it’s okay. She can teach her slowly.
【The female lead is different toward you. Why don’t you just tell her directly that you like her?】 The system couldn’t figure it out. Wouldn’t being direct be better? Maybe the blackening value could be eliminated in an instant, one labor for eternal ease, ah.
Wen Nuan heard Sang Er’s faint snores, opened her eyes, and held Sang Er’s entire person in her embrace, her fingers twirling her hair. “What’s the hurry?”
The system had a sudden realization: 【Oh, I forgot. You’re not in a hurry to eliminate the blackening value now; you’re single-mindedly focused on being in a relationship with her.】
Its host has started neglecting her proper duties again.
Alright, it’s used to it now.
Early in the morning, the sunlight fell unobstructed onto the bed.
Sang Er opened her eyes and discovered that she was actually being held in Wen Nuan’s arms. Clearly, before sleep, she had been the one hugging Wen Nuan. How had their positions reversed after one night’s sleep?
“Awake?” A low, hoarse voice came from above her head.
It sounded a bit hoarse and also a bit sexy.
Sang Er pulled out of Wen Nuan’s embrace, puzzled. “Wasn’t I the one hugging you before sleep? How did it become you hugging me?”
Wen Nuan opened her eyes and spoke blind words3: “Maybe it’s because the window was open last night. You got too cold during the night, so you drilled into my arms to get warm.”
“Is… is that so?” Sang Er was a bit suspicious.
“You don’t believe me?” Wen Nuan took her hand and pressed it against her own face. “Is it cool or not?”
“What’s cool?”
“Your hand, is it cool or not?”
Sang Er nodded. “It’s cool.”
“This is the evidence,” Wen Nuan’s lips curved into a smile. “The evidence that you threw yourself into my arms and offered an embrace.”
“….”
Speaking of which, although she clearly had a fire-element special ability, her body was often cool, and her hands and feet were especially icy. That was why she always loved to play with fire, to warm herself up a bit.
“You… what are you doing?” Sang Er watched in shock as Wen Nuan placed her hands on her stomach.
The soft and warm touch made her shrink back instinctively, but Wen Nuan held her hands firmly in place with a surprising amount of strength.
“Warming you up,” Wen Nuan said, warming her hands.
There were no panaceas in this world. Sang Er herself had a fire-element special ability, yet her body coldness4 had still not improved at all.
Wen Nuan thought of what Yu Wan Zhao had said to her in that other world. She wants to keep the scar, she wants to keep this cold air, she wants to make her remember her forever.
She raised a hand to touch Sang Er’s face and sighed softly. “You, ah…”
Stubborn donkey temper5.
“What about me?” Sang Er’s heart trembled at Wen Nuan’s touch.
Just as Wen Nuan was about to speak, the communication device6 on the table began to ring. “Go answer the call first.”
“Okay.” Sang Er got up, answered the device, and amplified the volume. “Hello, Leader Gao, is something the matter?”
“Has Xiao Lin woken up?”
Sang Er glanced at Wen Nuan and, seeing her nod, said, “She’s awake.”
“Good. You and Xiao Lin, come to the laboratory. Doctor An Min is looking for you.”
“Okay.” Sang Er found a shirt and pants for Wen Nuan. “We’ll be right over.”
She watched Wen Nuan put on her clothes, her heart feeling a little joyful. “Are they comfortable to wear?”
“Comfortable,” Wen Nuan smiled. “I wore them yesterday, and they were very comfortable to sleep in too.”
“That’s good,” Sang Er said. “After we finish our business at Doctor An Min’s, I’ll take you to buy clothes.”
She still wanted Wen Nuan to wear the kind of clothes she used to, clean and white. They looked good.
“Okay.”
After the two finished getting ready, they went to the base’s laboratory. In the lab, they saw Gao Zhengwu and Chu Han.
“You’re here.” Gao Zhengwu said as Wen Nuan and Sang Er walked over.
“Mhm,” Sang Er asked, “Is there something you need us for?”
Gao Zhengwu didn’t speak, instead looking toward An Min.
An Min, who was sitting in front of the control console, turned around, stood up, and walked in front of Wen Nuan. “I need a test subject.”
Sang Er didn’t understand what An Min meant. “What do you mean?”
“What do you need me to do?”
An Min had indeed created an antidote for the side effects of the H-agent, but no one knew what the process entailed.
But Wen Nuan knew clearly that a part of the reason Sang Er had “blackened” was because of this apocalypse. If the apocalypse disappeared, even if she left, she could rest assured that her girl could live on in the new world.
Sang Er watched the two of them suddenly start talking, and an ominous premonition flashed through her heart. She blocked Wen Nuan’s path and questioned An Min, “What do you want to do to Wen Nuan?”
She looked at Chu Han and saw his grave expression, and an inexplicable panic rose in her heart. “Chu Han, what are you doing here? Do you know something?”
Chu Han looked at Wen Nuan, his lips pressed into a tight line, unable to say a single word.
Wen Nuan pulled Sang Er aside, comforting her. “It’s okay.”
She looked at An Min. “What do I need to do?”
An Min pushed up his glasses and said faintly, “Go die.”
Wen Nuan: “….”
That’s really direct.
She roughly understood what An Min wanted her to do.
As the first-generation agent-user who had perfectly absorbed the H-agent, she was very suitable to be a test subject for resolving the H-agent’s side effects.
“I’ll go to your mother’s7,” a layer of flames rose in Sang Er’s eyes, and fire gathered in her palm as she struck directly at An Min. “I’ll fucking let you go die….”
An Min didn’t dodge. A tightly woven8 electric net materialized in front of him, blocking Sang Er’s attack.
Anger surged in Sang Er’s heart, her blood-red eyes filled with venomous resentment. “Chu Han, are you fucking looking for death?”
Chu Han’s brow furrowed tightly, and he said in a deep voice, “You can’t kill Doctor An. Only he can remove the side effects brought by the H-agent. Sang Er, calm down.”
“Calm your paralysis9,” Sang Er’s ten fingers clenched, and dozens of fire beams shot toward Chu Han and An Min respectively.
Chu Han raised his hand to pull An Min over, then immediately turned to dodge the fire beams, but he was still hit from behind by one, knocking him to the ground. He spat out a mouthful of blood.
An Min hadn’t even steadied himself when he saw the fire beams rushing toward him. He didn’t react, looking instead at the iron wall that had been erected in front of him. The scorching flames burned the iron wall red-hot, accompanied by hissing and cracking sounds.
“Sang Er, calm down and let Doctor An Min finish what he has to say!” Gao Zhengwu released his special ability with difficulty.
He was an A-rank metal-element user and couldn’t resist Sang Er’s attacks for long.
Sang Er roared, “He wants to kill Wen Nuan, how do you expect me to calm down?!”
An Min looked at Wen Nuan, then turned to Sang Er and said faintly, “Wen Nuan has an immortal body. What are you worried about?”
He let out a cold laugh. “Besides, the one who kills Wen Nuan won’t be me. It will be you.”
Sang Er froze. “What the fuck do you mean?”
“Your and Chu Han’s abilities are the strongest in the base, so I need you two to kill Wen Nuan respectively.” An Min’s fingertip pointed at Sang Er. “And the first one who needs to kill Wen Nuan is you.”
“You fucking…” Sang Er was burning with rage, wishing she could burn An Min to ash and smoke.
“Little Ears,” Wen Nuan grasped her hand and looked at her bloodshot eyes, smiling. “I’ll be fine. Have you forgotten? I have an immortal body. As long as my consciousness remains, I can be revived even if I’m split into four and cracked into five10.”
Sang Er’s voice trembled. “But, but…”
She didn’t want Wen Nuan to die again, and she especially didn’t want to kill her with her own hands.
She couldn’t do it, she really couldn’t do it…
Wen Nuan hugged her, stroking her back again and again, comforting her. “Little Ears, don’t be afraid. I won’t die. I will always be here.”
She looked at An Min. “How confident are you?”
Making me die again and again for this experiment, to witness the true effects of the H-agent firsthand, just how confident are you that you can create an antidote for its side effects?
An Min stroked his chin. “50%.”
Feeling the trembling in her arms, Wen Nuan patted her back and asked, “And the other 50%?”
“It can only be confirmed after the experiment is over.”
“Okay, let’s begin.” Wen Nuan looked at Sang Er, whose eyes were already red from crying, and gave a faint smile. “Don’t be afraid.”
“I don’t want to kill you,” Sang Er said with a sob.
She couldn’t bring herself to do it, she really couldn’t.
Her mind was a complete blank right now; she didn’t even know how to release her special ability anymore.
They were forcing her to kill the most important person to her with her own hands…
“Sang Er, look at me.”
Hearing her use her full name, Sang Er knew that Wen Nuan was being very serious now. She held back her tears and looked at Wen Nuan.
“Sang Er, I want the apocalypse to end. Will you help me, okay?” Wen Nuan wiped away her tears, her voice as gentle as water. “I want to be able to stand with you under a blue sky with white clouds, without having to worry about man-eating zombies popping out from somewhere, and without having to worry if we’ll be able to see tomorrow’s sun.”
“When the apocalypse ends, we won’t be separated again. Help me, okay?”
Sang Er’s lips moved, countless thoughts churning in her mind. Her throat tightened, as if it were on fire.
With extreme difficulty, she said, “…Okay.”
As long as it was something Wen Nuan wanted, she would give it to her, even if she had to risk her own life.
