Volume 11: The Days of Traversing Through the Mirror
Giant Face
You work hard; if there’s a problem, just sing and strive to scare the ghost to death.
The cold wind brushed past her forehead. Shen Maomao gave a big shiver, only then realizing her head was covered in cold sweat.
Lou Jingmo lowered her head to look at her and asked, “Nightmare again?”
“No…” Shen Maomao emboldened her guts and pointed to the pillar in front, saying, “Just now, a mirror appeared up there.”
Lou Jingmo: “There was a ghost in the mirror?”
“Yes, inside the mirror was us, but also not us…”
Lou Jingmo immediately understood: “Then let’s go back and talk. This mirror is quite an evil door1.”
This wasn’t just purely an evil door; this was almost writing the three words “I am ghost” right on it.
The two quickly went upstairs and walked back to the dorm.
The other few people in the dorm were all there. Besides them, there was the newcomer sitting on Wu Mei’s bed, currently chatting sporadically with Wu Mei.
Upon seeing them, Wu Mei turned her head to look at her, saying, “We made some discoveries in the reference room; we were just waiting for you to come back to talk.”
Shen Maomao took off her windbreaker and hung it at the head of the bed, saying, “Wait for me a moment, I’ll go wash my face first. We’ll talk when I get back?”
Wu Mei nodded.
Shen Maomao and Lou Jingmo went to the water room together. She twisted the first faucet; it let out two strange he he sounds, but no water flowed out.
“Forgot, forgot…” she mumbled, using her hip to bump the Lou Jingmo beside her. “Move a spot~”
Lou Jingmo rolled her eyes at her, moved her own basin to the side, and then, while Shen Maomao wasn’t paying attention, directly shoved her hand, which had been soaked cold by the water, into Shen Maomao’s neck.
“FUCK!!” Shen Maomao screamed, goosebumps rising all over her body. Angrily, she tried hard to stretch her hand under the other’s neck.
While messing around, Shen Maomao suddenly saw something flash past the window outside the water room from her peripheral vision. Shocked, she froze abruptly and was successfully attacked by Lou Jingmo. The hand slid in along her collar, freezing her until she howled: “Don’t make trouble! Don’t make trouble!! There’s something!”
Lou Jingmo didn’t retract her hand. She followed the momentum to turn her head and look behind, but saw nothing.
Shen Maomao was speechless: “Take your hand back, let’s speak properly.”
Lou Jingmo followed good advice naturally, walked a few steps to the window, carefully looked for two seconds, and then said, “There is nothing.”
But Shen Maomao was certain she had seen something just now. However, that thing’s speed was very fast, blurring into a black shadow. She wasn’t sure if it was a plastic bag blown up by the wind or some other thing.
She pondered it carefully, and her heart couldn’t help but panic a little. She always felt that the appearance of these omens represented that she had already been stared at by the ghosts and monsters in the instance. She couldn’t help but pull at Lou Jingmo’s sleeve: “How come I feel… it’s my turn?”
Lou Jingmo continued to comfort her using the Lou-style comforting method: “Don’t be afraid, it’s nothing. You work hard; if there’s a problem, just sing and strive to scare the ghost to death.”
Shen Maomao ruthlessly stepped on her foot: “Fuck off!”
Before they were together, she used to say she sang quite well. Now that she had soaked2 the person into her hands, she didn’t need to curry favor anymore. Love’s liar, I ask who you are…3
…
After returning to the dorm, the newcomer hadn’t left yet. Shen Maomao closed the main door, put away her washbasin, and said, “Alright, do you guys have any new discoveries?”
Wu Mei said, “On the way back I saw the counselor4. I followed her to the office shamelessly to help. She assigned me a job organizing materials. I took advantage of when no one was paying attention to flip through a few rounds and found some things.”
She picked up the backpack placed on the bed, fished out two thin sheets of paper, spread them out to show the few people, and said, “You guys look.”
Shen Maomao looked up and realized that of these two papers, one was a joint report letter, and the other was a disciplinary notice.
There were five reporters. They reported Zhan Xin for stealing things and strongly requested to change dorms; the disciplinary notice was for Wu Huiling, saying she fought on campus, recording a major demerit once.
Wu Mei said, “I found the information of the twelve people who exchanged with us. Among them, two are already dead. One is called Wu Huiling, one is called Zhan Xin. So I brought back these two things with their names written on them.”
Wu Mei previously lived in another dorm and hadn’t had time to share information with them. She probably hadn’t looked at that ghost forum either, so she didn’t know about Zhan Xin and Wu Huiling’s matters. The things she found weren’t of much use to them, but Shen Maomao didn’t say it out loud. She just looked at the players gathered in a circle and asked, “Do you guys have any thoughts?”
Shen Maomao said, “You guys probably didn’t check the forum, right? I found some information on it; you can use it for reference.” Then she said everything she knew.
After listening to her finish, Bai Lu said, “Speaking of which, does it want us to help them take revenge? Only then can we leave?”
Gan Ze coughed twice and said, “It’s also possible it’s helping the people in the school seal them… cough cough… hard to say.”
Shen Maomao: “It’s nothing more than these two types. The places we can go are too few; it’s very hard to search for useful clues.”
Peng Xiaorui suggested, “For such a big matter, it’s impossible for the school to not have a single record.”
Shen Maomao nodded: “I even feel that the few of us might just be substitute dead ghosts5 dragged over here.”
Peng Xiaorui gritted her teeth: “How about we think of a way to steal the gatekeeper’s keys and go search tonight?”
Bai Lu raised her hand and gave her a flick to the forehead: “Do you think the surveillance in the school is all decoration? And night is really too dangerous.”
Peng Xiaorui covered her skull in pain: “Then what else can be done? We can’t really treat ourselves as university students. If we continue step-by-step like this, I’m afraid in the end we’ll have to stay here forever.”
Shen Maomao stared blankly at a point in the void, also worrying about where to grasp the main line of this instance.
However, the main line wasn’t the most important thing. The most important thing was that night was coming again. They needed to think of a way to gou6 past today.
The few people, their discussion fruitless, shut their mouths. Shen Maomao and Lou Jingmo changed into pajamas and curled up on the top bunk to play on their phones together.
Playing and playing, Shen Maomao suddenly remembered something and asked in a whisper, “Why did you run to my bed to sleep this morning?”
Lou Jingmo was speechless: “I was almost kicked to death by you, why do you think?”
Shen Maomao: “Couldn’t you pin me down?!”
“Then I fucking need to have that strength!”
Shen Maomao fell silent: “Oh, then it’s fine. Are you still sleeping with me today?”
Lou Jingmo hesitated for a second, then said with iron certainty: “Sleep!” At worst, she would climb down herself in the middle of the night.
They were whispering over here. Opposite them, Wu Mei and the newcomer also sat together playing on phones. Seeing that the lights were about to be extinguished, Bai Lu suddenly opened her mouth to ask: “Are you not going back to your own dorm?”
The newcomer’s face turned entirely white: “I… I don’t want to go back.”
Although the corpse had already disappeared along with the bedding, and the bloodstains on the floor didn’t know who had wiped them, the air in their dorm always carried a lingering smell of blood, making her dare not stay inside for long.
Bai Lu hadn’t liked her from the start. Hearing her say this, she immediately said, “Where is there a place for you to live here? You ran over here; are you planning to kill one of us to make space for yourself?”
Although these words were mean, they had a certain logic.
The game had always been “fair” and liked to maintain balance. Now the number of people in the two dorms was seriously unbalanced. Adding the little newcomer, it was even more stimulating.
The newcomer was timid, but not brainless. It was impossible to let her buckle such a big hat7 on her head. She drummed up courage to retort, “Then… then maybe the one who dies is exactly me! Then you can all be safe!”
Hearing this, Shen Maomao couldn’t help but glance at her.
Bai Lu was full of fire: “Who told you one person would die a night?”
Wu Mei came out to be the old good person again: “Don’t argue, don’t argue. Let her squeeze with me. It should be fine. Haven’t the two of us been swapping dorms back and forth these two days without incident?”
Bai Lu also didn’t think much of Wu Mei, but Wu Mei counted as having more seniority, and might hold some trump cards in her hand. She didn’t want to offend everyone to death, so she hummed twice and didn’t speak, considering it a default approval.
The newcomer gratefully huddled next to Wu Mei and continued to bite ears8 with her.
A few minutes later, the lights in the room suddenly went out.
Shen Maomao didn’t know why she felt a bit nervous. She always felt something would happen tonight and couldn’t help but tighten her grip on Lou Jingmo’s hand.
Lou Jingmo looked at her. Her pitch-black eyes seemed to glow, revealing a strand of old dog cunt9 style gentleness: “Make sure not to sleep. This time it’s your turn to keep watch and mine to sleep.”
Shen Maomao revealed a touched smile: “Are you fucking human?”
Lou Jingmo patted her shoulder: “Add oil10, Maomao-jiang11.”
Shen Maomao wasn’t scared at all in her heart; she even wanted to curse people.
…
After the night deepened, the dorm quieted down.
The few people in the room slept very soundly, but Gan Ze was tossing and turning.
She didn’t know why, but she always felt she couldn’t quite catch her breath tonight.
This made her a bit panicked because the person who once lived in this dorm died of asthma.
The more she thought this way, the thinner the oxygen in the air seemed to become, like a large invisible hand ruthlessly choking her throat.
Her breathing became more and more hurried. Her mouth opened wide, like a fish lacking water, gasping he chi he chi with difficulty.
The dorm seemed even quieter.
She had clearly made such loud noises; why had her roommates not woken up yet?
Thinking this, her heart began to beat crazily, appearing as if it would jump out of her chest in the next second.
Thump—a muffled sound. She gave a big shiver, and that suffocating sensation faded quite a bit, allowing her to spare some mental attention to look at the place emitting the sound.
The curtains that had clearly been pulled shut were pulled open by who knows whom. Outside the window, she saw a giant face—that face was almost as big as the entire window frame. The features carried blood, rubbing against the window, smearing a patch of red traces carrying minced meat onto it.
Gan Ze almost vomited, yet her body remained stiff, daring not to move. Cold sweat rustled down, almost wetting the quilt.
Confronting it like this for a few seconds, suddenly another large hand slapped onto the window. The fragile glass immediately let out a crisp sound, blooming with spiderweb-like cracks. At the same time, the bed board beneath her and the table beside her both rang out, making alarm bells ring madly in her heart.
No good… she must flee here!
She thought this way.
The author has something to say:
Today the teacher marked key points, marked for a whole hour; I shed tears.
Updates won’t be very stable these few days. In another two days, I might have to ask for a long leave. Exams finish around July 15th. Little cuties don’t need to work hard squatting12!
