Volume 9: The Days Can’t Be Lived Anymore
Provoking Ghosts’ Dislike
The dream is helping her find a wife?
Ren Yue still didn’t know that she had been sentenced to death because of her face.
She was almost blissfully making dinner, unleashing all the passion she had accumulated over the past few years, and stir-fried almost all the vegetables she had bought in the morning.
Water vapor spread throughout the entire kitchen. The glass door leading to the balcony was a sheet of white mist, perfectly serving the role of a curtain.
“Pa—papa—”
The glass door suddenly made several strange sounds. Several small handprints were clearly imprinted on it. From a physics perspective, this little ghost should be inside the house, right beside her, but she wasn’t the least bit scared. She even extended her index finger and wrote an “L” next to the small hand, then drew a big, big love heart around the “L”.
Ghost: “…”
She didn’t need anyone’s help for the entire meal. Her hands and feet were nimble as she set the tableware, her movements so practiced it was as if she had done it countless times before. Then she pulled open the kitchen door, preparing to call the several Daye1 to eat.
The moment the door opened, the few people who had been talking instantly stopped and all looked at her.
Ren Yue felt that she had probably been excluded from the group by them, but she didn’t care very much. She just said to Xiao Lou with a smile, “We can eat now.”
The kitchen area was small to begin with. Usually, when she ate alone, she didn’t feel anything, but today, with four adults and one child—five people—squeezed in at once, plus one Da Xiongdi2 who was tall and sturdily built, it suddenly seemed crowded.
Seeing the situation, Ren Yue said, “You all eat first. I just finished eating not long ago, so I’m not hungry yet.” After speaking, she retreated to the living room, closing the kitchen door behind her. On the way, she turned on the television and finally sat on the sofa to seriously watch the official news.
The people in the kitchen saw the glass door to the balcony at first glance, and of course, the drawing on the door along with it.
“This…” Boss Huo said, “That Rabbit-guniang3 is really… towards you…”
Xiao Lou shot him a sideways glance, not letting him finish the words that would likely disgust her. “Do you still want your legs or not?”
Boss Huo did want them, and he felt that, based on the personality this person displayed, if she said she would break his legs, she absolutely wouldn’t break his hands instead. So, he quickly shut his mouth and obediently picked up his bowl and chopsticks to eat.
Huo Dongdong sat on the stool, not needing his dad to feed him at all. He clutched his spoon and ate until his face was covered in grains of rice. At the end, he even expressed his thoughts, “Jiejie’s cooking is so delicious. Dad, can Jiejie be my mom?”
Boss Huo almost sprayed out a mouthful of rice. “No way, son. Rabbit-jiejie likes Xiao Lou-jiejie…”
Huo Dongdong asked naively, “Then is Xiao Lou-jiejie’s cooking even better? Can Xiao Lou-jiejie be my mom?”
Boss Huo quickly picked up a piece of vegetable for his son with his chopsticks. “Good son, eat more, talk less. Dad still wants to live to take you out of the city.” After saying that, he raised his head again and carefully glanced at Xiao Lou across from him, only relaxing after confirming that her expression showed no abnormality.
Ai, how was this hiring a bodyguard? This was simply hiring an Ancestor4… Who knows how much chickens flying and dogs jumping5 the rest of the journey would be.
After finishing dinner, it was the part Ren Yue looked forward to the most.
She was like an industrious little honeybee, proactively and enthusiastically tidying up an unused empty room. She made the beds for the two big and one small, three gentlemen, then returned to her own room, pushed her own quilt inward, and added a new quilt that had been at the bottom of a storage chest6 next to it.
Boss Huo looked at his watch. “It’s getting late. Should we rest now and start early tomorrow?”
Ren Yue nodded her head furiously. “Okay, okay.”
The two Da laoyemen7 took the child back to their room. Once the door was closed, only the two of them were left in the living room. Ren Yue was very excited and also a little shy. She asked in a bashful voice, “We… why don’t we go to sleep too?”
The word “sleep” was originally nothing, but paired with her shy expression and bashful tone, it immediately seemed to have some other meaning, making Xiao Lou feel another wave of disgust in her heart.
She sat on the sofa, crossing one leg in the Erlang tui8 style, and tapped her knee with her index finger, quite annoyed. “No need. I’ll sleep on the sofa.”
“But…” The disappointment in Ren Yue’s eyes was about to overflow. She said “but” for a long time without finding a suitable reason. Finally, her eyes lit up. She looked at the refrigerator and said, one word at a time, “But, inside my refrigerator, there’s a ghost!”
That tone didn’t sound like she was reminding her to be careful of ghosts, but more like she was showing off—See that? My family’s ghost! Such a big one!
The refrigerator, very obligingly, emitted a strange sound, coordinating with Ren Yue to prove there was a ghost inside it.
Xiao Lou said in a cold voice, “There are more in your room.”
“Hearing you say that, I’m a little scared,” Ren Yue said seriously. “The sofa is quite spacious, why don’t we together…”
“Scram.”
Ren Yue’s face fell. She pursed her lips, aggrieved, her gaze towards the sofa like she was looking at a class enemy.
Tomorrow I’ll pack this broken thing up and throw it out!
She asked dejectedly, “Then I’ll help you bring the quilt out?”
Xiao Lou stood up. “No need, I can do it myself.”
Ren Yue instantly wilted like an eggplant hit by frost9. She followed dejectedly behind her, watching as she packed up the quilt she had just laid out, carried it to the sofa, and laid it out neatly before lazily lying down on it, the tips of her pink hair swinging in a beautiful arc.
“You can rest now.” In front of her, Xiao Lou placed a dagger under the pillow. That dagger had strange patterns drawn on it; it was the kind of good thing that could chop both Ligui10 and Segui11. “Please help turn off the light.”
Ren Yue, on the verge of tears, aggrievedly helped her turn off the light, then walked towards her own room, taking one step and turning her head back three times.
Until she had shuffled into her room, the other party still hadn’t said any words to make her stay.
Ren Yue disappointedly closed the door, then turned off the light as well. Clutching her phone, she burrowed into her lonely quilt, her hands flying across the screen—
【Does she hate me?】
【Her hair color is so cute, why is her personality so cold?】
【Which ‘Lou’ is her ‘Lou’? The ‘Lou’ from ‘Xiao Lou last night again the east wind’12?】
【Could she like girls?】
The other side replied: 【Rabbit, if you’ve been possessed by a ghost, blink your eyes】
【Ba-ge: Dajie13, you’ve only known her for three hours. Are you kidding me?】
【Ren Yue: Maybe we knew each other in a past life, otherwise I wouldn’t be so moved at first sight】
【Ba-ge: So cheesy it makes my teeth ache14, Dage15】
【Ren Yue: So why does she hate me? Am I not pretty enough?】
【Ba-ge: Maybe she’s heterosexual? This kind of behavior from you is sexual harassment.】
【Ren Yue: Impossible. I can feel it, she is absolutely not heterosexual.】
【Ba-ge: When I wasn’t looking, did you evolve a little gaydar?】
【Ren Yue: I don’t know, my intuition is telling me so.】
【Ba-ge: Wo cao16!! Talking to you, the phone’s light attracted a ghostly thing!】
Ren Yue sighed lightly, raising her eyes to look at the scarlet eyes of the woman on the ceiling, which lit up in the darkness. She asked in a soft voice, “How do you pursue a girl?”
The other party gave her a huge eye-roll and directly closed her eyes.
Ren Yue rolled over and looked at the wardrobe, which had opened a crack at some unknown time. “Will she think I’m very annoying?”
The wardrobe door slammed shut with a bang.
Sorrow entangled her like a ball of yarn. She rolled over again, looking past the faces pressed tightly against the window at the blood-red moon on the horizon. “She likes me… she hates me… she likes me… she hates me…”
“Dong—!”
A sound of someone slamming the wall suddenly came from next door, and a hoarse, rough voice sounded, “Hurry the fuck up and go to sleep!”
Ren Yue: “…Oh.”
Harboring all sorts of little thoughts, she slowly sank into a deep sleep. The dream from the past didn’t appear again. This time, she dreamed of a house. Inside the house were her and a Xiao Lou whose hair was no longer pink. The two were hugging each other tightly, lying on the sofa like conjoined twins. Just looking at the scene, you could feel the happiness radiating from them.
She could only see Xiao Lou’s face clearly. Besides that, everything else in the room, including her own face, seemed to be covered in a layer of mosaic, hazy and indistinct.
But even so, she knew that the person beside her with the mosaic-covered face was her.
“Rabbit…”
She heard Xiao Lou’s voice calling her, and it suddenly overlapped with the voice from her previous dreams, making her heart pound uncontrollably.
What kind of dream is this? Her and Xiao Lou’s future? Then what was she dreaming of before? Why would she dream of Xiao Lou calling her voice?
Could it be that the dream is helping her… find a laopo17?
Holding all sorts of doubts, Ren Yue slept until it was broad daylight, not waking up at all in the middle of the night no matter how they moved tables and chairs on the roof.
When the first ray of morning sunlight shone on her face, she opened her eyes at once and sat up in bed.
It was still early. Maybe Xiao Lou in the living room was still fast asleep.
She got off the bed lightly, not wearing slippers in order to avoid making too much noise. She tiptoed step by step towards the door, then carefully pulled it open.
Outside the door, the quilt on the sofa was folded into a perfect square. Xiao Lou was neatly dressed, sitting on the sofa and playing on her phone.
Ren Yue was instantly greatly disappointed.
Xiao Lou let out a cold laugh. “A mouse that cannot see people.”18
Ren Yue: “Zhi19—”
Xiao Lou: “…”
Since she had already been discovered, Ren Yue simply opened the door wide and walked out openly, greeting her with a smile, “Good morning!” full of energy.
Xiao Lou didn’t respond.
She wasn’t discouraged and continued to ask, “What do you want to eat this morning? Some congee? I’m pretty good at making congee!”
Xiao Lou lifted her eyelids, and a sentence slipped out, “I’m afraid you’ll cook it to a mush, right?”
After saying it, she herself was stunned for a moment. Her brows furrowed slightly, as if she couldn’t understand why she would say that.
Ren Yue just took it as her mocking her and went to the kitchen without minding. She boiled water, washed the rice, and started cooking the congee, striving to first find a way to conquer that woman’s stomach. The men also gradually woke up, emerging from their room yawning.
Boss Huo led Huo Dongdong on a walk around the kitchen and tucao-ed20, “Rabbit-guniang, your house is really lively at night.”
