Volume 5: Days of Applying Makeup to Corpses
Wutong
What a pitiful ghost
Lou Jingmo’s face turned green.
Not only because she felt a bit nauseated, but also because of Shen Maomao’s idiotic thought process.
What the f*ck about not washing hands, you damn straight girl, get lost!
She turned to leave, while Shen Maomao hurriedly chased after her: “Lou-jie, are you angry? Lou-jie? Lou-jie? Lou-jie?”
Lou Jingmo slapped her face and pinched her soft cheeks: “From now on, don’t speak.”
Shen Maomao obediently closed her mouth, her eyes showing confusion, eagerly questioning her with her gaze.
Lou Jingmo: “I’m afraid I might beat you up.”
Shen Maomao: “…” Genuine tears fell.
The commotion in the courtyard seemed to have ended, there was no one else in the corridor, and every door was tightly shut.
At the room’s entrance, Shen Maomao said softly: “Lou-jie, there’s someone else in my room besides me.”
“Wutong?” Lou Jingmo asked.
Shen Maomao wasn’t sure: “I can’t see it, but it moves around the room, I can sense it.”
Lou Jingmo asked again: “Is it the same one that opened the window last night?”
Shen Maomao nodded: “Should be the same one, because it opened the window again.”
“It might be someone who lived here before, that type shouldn’t harm you,” Lou Jingmo warned her, “What you need to be careful of is that lustful ghost Wutong, I think it will come for you.”
Shen Maomao was shocked: “Holy sh*t, what should I do?”
Lou Jingmo: “I suggest you commit suicide.”
Shen Maomao: “…”
Actually, Lou Jingmo’s words made some sense. A lustful ghost – even its name sounded indecent. It probably targeted young, beautiful girls like her for indecent purposes. As a qualified successor of socialism, she would rather die than violate socialist core values!
Lou Jingmo slapped her back: “I was just joking. If you take it seriously, I’ll look down on you for life.”
Then she added: “Just deal with the Wutong the same way you deal with humans. If you can’t handle it, find a way to come out and knock on my door. Don’t ever try jumping from the second floor to escape – I suspect the original resident of your room might have died from jumping.”
Shen Maomao quickly nodded.
The two parted at the door, each returning to their rooms. Shen Maomao didn’t turn on the light, walking straight to the bed, taking off her shoes and climbing into the covers fully clothed.
As soon as she got under the blanket, she shivered from the cold – the temperature under the covers was even lower than outside!
She immediately sensed something was wrong and quickly threw off the covers, jumping to the other bed.
The other side didn’t have that bone-chilling coldness.
Shen Maomao said dryly: “Sir, were you not satisfied with the original bed? It’s fine, you just need to say so, I can even sleep on the floor.”
After speaking, she perked up her ears to listen for movement in the room, but heard nothing. The “brother” in the room seemed to just want to scare her, and having achieved his goal, made no further moves.
Shen Maomao stayed awake all night. When sunlight first shone into the room the next day, she sprang up from bed like a carp [鯉魚打挺 | lǐ yú dǎ tǐng | idiom meaning to spring up suddenly], not feeling particularly tired.
Nothing unusual happened in the latter half of the night; she hadn’t seen either the Wutong or any other ghosts.
Today was the third day of the game, and she still had no clue about this instance.
She pushed open the door, peering cautiously into the corridor. The long hallway remained unchanged as ever, so quiet you could hear a pin drop, as if it would stay this way forever.
She walked out and knocked on Lou Jingmo’s door.
Guan Qiwen opened the door, stepping aside to let her in.
The situation inside exceeded her expectations: besides Lou Jingmo sitting on the bed and Guan Qiwen standing at the door, there was actually another person.
This person was extremely handsome, more handsome than any man Shen Maomao had ever seen, but he was naked, with a bedsheet tightly bound around his private areas, and his expression was caught between crying and not crying, looking quite comical.
However, this comical appearance didn’t diminish his devastatingly attractive aura. Shen Maomao only looked twice before feeling as if she could hear her own heart flutter, and quickly averted her gaze, immediately understanding who he was.
No wonder she hadn’t encountered anything last night – the Wutong had snuck into Lou Jingmo’s room instead.
Everything in the books was true – Wutong really could transform into a handsome man! Though when she thought about the Wutong’s appearance as depicted in the books, she suddenly didn’t find him quite so handsome anymore.
She walked to Lou Jingmo’s side, sat down on the bed, and asked: “What’s the situation here?”
Lou Jingmo: “He snuck in from somewhere in the middle of the night to seduce me, so I beat him up.”
Shen Maomao: “…” What a pitiful ghost.
Two streams of tears fell from the Wutong’s eyes, looking quite pitiable.
However, Lou Jingmo remained completely unmoved, walking over to kick him again: “Just looking at your face irritates me.”
Shen Maomao: “?”
Lou Jingmo explained briefly: “This is my arch-enemy’s face. He’s intercepted my signals [胡 | hú | radio signals], stolen my props – he’s lucky I didn’t kill him.”
Shen Maomao narrowed her eyes, discovering something interesting: “Wait, isn’t Wutong supposed to transform into the person a woman desires most… Could it be that Lou-jie, despite your outward rivalry with your arch-enemy, you actually have feelings for him?”
Lou Jingmo gave her an inscrutable look and said: “Don’t assume such disgusting possibilities. I’m into women, and that won’t change.”
Guan Qiwen showed a shocked expression, his gaze sweeping from Lou Jingmo to Shen Maomao, then back and forth between them.
Shen Maomao glared at him: “What are you looking at? We have a pure woman-to-woman relationship.”
Guan Qiwen gave a dry cough and averted his gaze.
The Wutong on the floor burst into tears: “You actually like women?! I went through so much trouble to pick the man who left the deepest impression on you, if I’d known I would have transformed into her!!”
Shen Maomao’s curiosity peaked, and she sleazily leaned in to ask: “Which ‘her’? What does she look like?”
Just as the Wutong was about to speak, Lou Jingmo stepped on his face and said coldly: “Stop the nonsense. Let’s drag him downstairs and let others decide how to deal with him. Just looking at him irritates me.”
It seemed Lou-jie really hated this arch-enemy – she was like she’d eaten gunpowder, ready to explode at the slightest touch.
This Wutong, in human form, had no abilities other than a mysterious power that made people increasingly want to have indecent relations with him. Since Guan Qiwen was a complete straight man, he voluntarily took on the task of carrying the ghost, dragging him behind the two women as they went downstairs.
Shen Maomao thought the whole way, also feeling that the idea of Lou Jingmo liking her arch-enemy was nonsense. After all, if she really liked him, she would have lost control upon seeing the Wutong – how could she possibly be so angry and beat him up so badly?
The two walked in front, completely unaware of the situation behind them. When they reached the cafeteria and sat down, they realized a ghost was missing – the Wutong had disappeared.
And Guan Qiwen was holding onto a piece of bedsheet, with a human arm tied to its end.
“Holy sh*t?” Only after the two women’s reminder did Guan Qiwen realize what he had been dragging along, immediately dropping it. “Why is this arm so heavy?!”
The bedsheet floated lightly to the ground, with its other end tightly wrapped around a bloodless severed arm, creating quite an eerie sight.
Lou Jingmo said: “Detaching its tail to survive – does it think it’s a lizard?”
Shen Maomao also said: “What’s it afraid of? We weren’t necessarily going to kill it, and we still need it to understand the situation in this instance.”
Lou Jingmo warned her: “Don’t underestimate the Wutong, we might have to face its revenge soon.”
Shen Maomao: “…” Thinking of the Wutong’s tear-streaked face, she couldn’t bring herself to feel nervous at all.
This morning’s food had no taste, but Shen Maomao could now eat dirt without changing her expression.
Besides the three of them, two more men arrived. Both were startled by the severed arm on the floor, thinking someone had died in the cafeteria, and hurriedly asked what had happened.
Guan Qiwen omitted some key information and briefly explained what happened during the night.
The slightly older man sighed: “Ah, who knows when these days will end.”
The younger one said: “So much happened yesterday that I was too busy to share information with you. Since everyone’s here today, let me tell you what happened during my night watch, so nobody can say we’re bullying the women.”
These two were actually the other two guards?
Lou Jingmo narrowed her eyes, not recognizing them at all.
The young man, who must have guarded on the first night, spoke first: “I didn’t experience anything special that night, at most I was startled by a Yaksha. Though the room temperature was very low, nearly freezing me to death, so I lit something for warmth and fell asleep by the fire.”
The first part seemed true, but the latter part was questionable.
Lou Jingmo and Shen Maomao had checked the guard room together – it was damp and cold, with no ash from any fire, not even a trace of smoke smell. But perhaps he had some heating device he didn’t want to mention – everyone understood tacitly, no need to point it out.
The other man also said: “Everyone knows what happened yesterday. I felt nothing in the first half of the night, but when I returned after going out during the second half, the room temperature had dropped. I kept feeling like someone was walking back and forth in the room, but when I listened carefully, I couldn’t detect anyone. I spent the night in fear, but received no attacks until dawn.”
“Thank you both for the information.” Shen Maomao paused, then asked, “Do you remember how many people we have in total?”
The younger one scratched his head and said: “Can’t remember clearly, too many people, I never counted carefully.”
The older one also said: “Is this important? We’re here to clear the stage, not to count people.”
Lou Jingmo curved her lips slightly and said: “Alright, if I survive tonight, I’ll chat with you again.”
The two nodded and left without eating anything, as if they had come specifically to inform Lou Jingmo.
Shen Maomao took another bite of the dirt: “Why come to the cafeteria if they’re not eating?”
Guan Qiwen said: “Maybe they were scared by the arm on the floor and lost their appetite?”
But that seemed unlikely – plenty of people had died in the game, if they couldn’t eat after seeing a clean severed arm, they’d probably starve to death in the game.
At this moment, Lou Jingmo suddenly spoke: “They came for me.”
The author has something to say:
Why are there comments wanting Lou-jie to XXX like this?! – I’m talking about the comments, like wanting Lou-jie to hug them, wanting Lou-jie to massage their neck, and such things.
