Substitute Alpha Gets Confessed to by Her Ex’s Aunt on a Survival Variety Show – Chapter 5

Book Transmigration Reading System

Her eyebrows were like the mountain moon, her snowy skin like congealed fat.1 Her jade-like neck was long and slender, and the oversized storm jacket couldn’t hide her graceful figure.

When Nan Huaixu stood by the sea, the gentle breeze caressing her ink-black hair, she looked like a romantic oil painting. It felt less like she was here to film a survival show and more like she was shooting an arthouse film.

A straightforward person doesn’t speak in riddles;2 Liu Yinxi liked looking at beautiful women.

Appreciating a beautiful woman had a different charm depending on the situation. On this undisturbed coast in the early morning, it was as if she were on a tropical island vacation with the Accomplished Actress3 herself.

Liu Yinxi smiled immersively, then took half a second to return to reality. “Whoa! Nan Huaixu! Hello, hello, my name is Liu Yinxi, and I’m a fan of yours! I’m so lucky! I can’t believe I get to be teammates with a celebrity, I’m so excited, ahhh!”

In the original book, Nan Huaixu hadn’t participated in 《Survivor 5》. Her appearance was completely unexpected for Liu Yinxi. Did this mean other plot points might have changed too?

She’d observe for now and adapt to the circumstances.4

Nan Huaixu stopped and stood face-to-face with her, a meter away. “Hello. Let’s do our best together.”

Liu Yinxi pretended she had never met Nan Huaixu before, and Nan Huaixu tacitly went along with it. After all, Nan Huaixu’s relationship with her niece was distant, and Liu Yinxi had already broken up with said niece. Right now, the relationship between Nan Huaixu and Liu Yinxi was no different from that of strangers.

“Nan—” Just as Liu Yinxi was about to remind her to activate her wristband, Nan Huaixu walked decisively toward a few coconut trees on the beach. “It’s easy to get sunburned by the sea. Let’s find some shade first.”

Liu Yinxi hurried to follow her. “Oh, okay! I opened a green coconut, it’s really sweet. I’ll go get it for you to drink.”

A camouflage-clad camera dog and a drone in the distance followed them, filming.

In the livestream chat, Nan Huaixu’s fans caused an uproar.5

【Manman6 is the unluckiest guest this season, bar none.】

【LMAO, a delicate alpha who eats soft rice7 dares to join a survival show! She learned to open a coconut and pick up some trash before the competition and thinks she’s hot stuff?】

【Number 6’s video bio makes me so mad! What kind of decent alpha has a butt-shaking dance as their special skill? How did a borderline.a8 even pass the screening to get into 《Survivor 5》?! Her job description is ‘making my ex-girlfriend happy.’ I’m speechless, how shameless can you be? It’d be a miracle if someone like that could be a good teammate.】

【Oh my god, what is this moronic alpha? She’s letting our Manman bake in the sun, and she only went to find shade after Manman told her to! The survival conditions are so harsh, and not only can her teammate not help, she’s going to be a burden. How much is our Manman going to suffer during this time! My heart is broken! [Splitting apart]】

【I feel so bad for Manman +1】

【+2】

A few different opinions were mixed in with the scrolling fan comments, but they were very, very few.

【It’s not that bad. Nan Huaixu just landed. Number 6 was just greeting her, she’s not going to get sunburned from that. The fans are overreacting.】

【This is the fifth season of Survivor, and people are still trying to decide the winner with trash talk?9

【Let the facts speak for themselves. Number 6’s actions from landing until now have been very professional and quick. A little interesting.】

The coconut leaves swayed gently in the sea breeze, and the sound of waves washed over the beach.

Liu Yinxi brought over the sweet and thirst-quenching green coconut. Nan Huaixu had already put on and activated her wristband and was now organizing her standard-issue pack.

“Liu Yinxi.”

“Here!”

Nan Huaixu glanced at the camera dog and chatted as if they were strangers who had just met. “What do you do for work? Do you have any prior survival experience?”

Liu Yinxi answered truthfully, “I have over ten years of wilderness survival experience. Rock climbing and diving are a piece of cake10 for me. I’m super capable.”

She knew Nan Huaixu wouldn’t believe her.

No one would believe her.

Since no one would believe her anyway, it didn’t hurt to tell the truth once in a while. The original owner was a drama queen who loved to put on an act—not only pretending to be rich, but also pretending to know things she didn’t.11

Nan Huaixu’s hands paused. The corners of her mouth twitched in a half-smile as she asked, “I’m thirty-two this year. What about you?”

Liu Yinxi wanted to say she was a little older, but what came out was, “I’m twenty-three.”

She gave the original owner’s age. After transmigrating, she had discovered that not only had her wounds disappeared, but a hospital check-up revealed her body had reverted to its state in her early twenties.

Nan Huaixu’s tone was calm, but her words were sharp. “You’re twenty-three and have over ten years of survival experience. Your family was okay with you going into the wilderness alone at ten?”

“It’s been a long time since anyone cared about me like this. Thank you, Nan-jiejie.”

A hint of a smile flickered in Liu Yinxi’s eyes, but her pretty eyebrows knitted together. “My mom and dad divorced before I was even one. They both remarried and had other children. I grew up with my maternal grandma in the countryside. When I was little, I’d run off to play in the mountains, and my grandma would look for me. As for my mom and dad, it wasn’t that they were okay with it, they just didn’t have time to ask about me.”

She was describing the original owner’s family of origin.12

The sound of the waves accompanied the wind.

Without the sound of conversation, the seaside was exceptionally peaceful.

Nan Huaixu was silent for a moment before taking a sip of the green coconut Liu Yinxi had given her. “The coconut is very sweet, thank you,” she said softly, not asking anything else.

Liu Yinxi beamed. “I picked up a bunch. Jiejie, drink as much as you want.”

Nan Huaixu zipped up her backpack and stood to survey her surroundings.

“I participated in a trekking tour in Brazil last year, and last month I did some private training specifically for 《Survivor》. I believe my outdoor knowledge is more extensive than yours. I propose that I be the team captain. Do you agree?”

As she spoke, she turned and walked toward a relatively sparse gap at the edge of the forest, raising her wrist to look at the compass on her wristband.

Coincidentally, this was the very spot Liu Yinxi had previously identified as a good entry point into the woods. The trees were spaced far apart, making it easy to hike, there was good light penetration, and the overall terrain in the distance formed a concave valley, increasing the likelihood of finding a stream.

Liu Yinxi followed behind her. “I agree! Nan-jiejie, you’re so reliable.”

Nan Huaixu’s brow furrowed. “We’ll help each other.” She walked straight into the forest.

The area where they had landed was a mountainous region of a forest park near the sea.

The tropical rainforest climate was warm, but the temperature difference between day and night in the mountains was quite large. If they were caught in a downpour without shelter, the evaporating rainwater would sap their body heat, easily leading to illness or even hypothermia.

Liu Yinxi’s goal was clear: they had to find a suitable place to spend the night and build a shelter before dark, and they also needed to gather food and fresh water.

For now, the coconuts could supply them with fresh water, and finding food in a tropical rainforest wasn’t difficult. Therefore, the top priority13 was the shelter.

Nan Huaixu selected two long wooden sticks from the grassy area and used her knife to shave the bark smooth to prevent splinters.

“We need to choose a safe place to build a shelter now.” She handed the longer stick to Liu Yinxi. “Use this as a hiking stick. Be careful of snakes and insects in the grass and on the trees.”

Liu Yinxi took it. “Okay, okay. Jiejie, you’re so thoughtful and knowledgeable.”

Her praise was sincere.

Liu Yinxi had thought a celebrity joining a survival show was just for exposure and to gain popularity; she hadn’t expected Nan Huaixu to have a high level of outdoor skills. But it turned out Nan Huaixu had trekking experience and had even undergone private survival training. This was a great help to Liu Yinxi, bringing her one step closer to victory.

Liu Yinxi held the stick Nan Huaixu had given her, tapping it against the dense grass, the corners of her mouth curving up.

She decided to follow Nan Huaixu’s lead, offering suggestions when necessary, and quietly making up for anything that was lacking herself.

This way, she could more naturally maintain her persona as a clumsy drama queen—but if they faced a life-threatening situation or a critical moment to fight for an airdrop, she would absolutely not continue playing dumb just to preserve her character.

“Liu Yinxi, walk a little faster. Don’t fall behind.”

“Okay.”

Liu Yinxi quickened her pace to catch up with Nan Huaixu.

“Nan-jiejie, what kind of place are we looking for to build a shelter?”

Nan Huaixu waited for her to catch up, then continued walking, leaning on her stick. “A proper wilderness shelter should be located downwind to avoid being discovered by animals, and it also needs to be near a water source.”

Liu Yinxi: “Mhm, mhm.” Wind direction and water source were indeed the two most important points, but not the only ones. Specific situations required specific analysis.

“You said you used to run off and play in the mountains as a child. Have you ever spent the night in the wild?”

“Of course. Nan-jiejie, I can’t walk anymore.”

Nan Huaixu walked a few more steps, then turned back when she no longer heard Liu Yinxi’s footsteps, checking her watch.

“Liu Yinxi, we’ve only been walking for half an hour.”

“Jiejie~ My feet are so sore. Can we rest for a bit, please?”

Liu Yinxi sat down on a rock, fanning herself with her hand.

Nan Huaixu frowned and, without a word, stuck her stick into the dirt to use as a support while she rested.

“Two minutes. Our time is very tight.”

Liu Yinxi nodded. She looked around. There were banana and palm trees, and several large rocks separated the roots of the surrounding big trees. The tree trunks grew around the rocks, and their spreading canopies formed a sort of skylight, allowing sunlight to shine down. The overlapping crowns were like a giant umbrella, casting a patch of shade.

This was a great spot. The ground was flat, the canopy could block rain, the large rocks could serve as anchor points for a frame, and there was sunlight nearby.

From here to the beach, and then to the shipwreck, would only take Liu Yinxi a little over twenty minutes, and the path she had scouted on the way here was very easy to walk.

The airdrops in the early stages were all by the sea. The location for the shelter in the first ten days had to be chosen with the airdrops as the main priority.

Liu Yinxi wanted to build their shelter here, but she was a little hesitant.

Her main reason for choosing this spot was its proximity to the airdrop point. But what if the original book’s plot had changed, and the airdrop point was no longer at the shipwreck on the beach?

Nan Huaixu pulled her stick out of the ground. “Liu Yinxi, let’s go.”

Liu Yinxi’s body moved before her mind did. Her head lifted first, and she looked at Nan Huaixu, her thoughts still tangled up on the shelter.

Seeing her aggrieved expression, Nan Huaixu sighed softly and extended a hand to her. “Stand up slowly. You don’t have low blood sugar, do you?”

A faint light flickered in Liu Yinxi’s pupils as she took her hand. Nan Huaixu’s hand was very soft, but her knuckles and palm weren’t delicate; they were somewhat rough, with thin calluses, likely from her private training.

“No—”

Liu Yinxi used Nan Huaixu’s strength to get up. The moment she grasped her hand, a line of text suddenly flashed before her eyes, as if she were wearing VR glasses. The words materialized abruptly in the air.

More and more words flashed into view, growing from a line to a paragraph, a paragraph to a page, filling a rectangular area in front of Liu Yinxi’s eyes.

Forward and back arrows appeared directly below the text, along with the control buttons of an e-reader system. Liu Yinxi mentally thought “turn page,” and the text before her actually flipped to the next page.

What is this?!

Liu Yinxi found a “Me” icon in the bottom right corner and mentally willed it to open. A personal information interface appeared, stamped with her headshot—to be precise, it was her black-and-white memorial photo from her original world. User ID: Book Transmigration Reading System User liuyinxi.

Liu Yinxi was shocked. She had a transmigration system!14

Well, that’s great.

But, System, can this profile picture be changed?

She tried to converse with the system in her mind, only to find that it had no AI function at all. It was just a reading system that could be operated mentally. Other than being controlled by thought instead of fingers, it was no different from a normal e-reader app. She could highlight text, make notes, long-press to add bookmarks, search for words or phrases throughout the text, and even choose the font and size, and adjust the character and paragraph spacing.

Liu Yinxi checked the bookshelf. There was only the one book she had transmigrated into. The table of contents was identical to the original book she had read in her world, and browsing the first two chapters confirmed they were the same.

She flipped to the chapter where the variety show began and found that the plotlines for the characters she and Nan Huaixu had replaced were all marked with a strikethrough. Flipping back, she saw that the plot points that existed in the original book but hadn’t happened after her transmigration were also marked with a strikethrough.

So, had the other guests changed?

Liu Yinxi looked at the plot point about the lottery for team pairings. The other six guests hadn’t changed.

But since she and Nan Huaixu had replaced two guests, all the teams had been shuffled. The other guests’ team-up plotlines were marked with a yellow highlight, indicating a modification.

Liu Yinxi understood. As long as the plot wasn’t deleted or modified in the reading system, the original book’s trajectory would remain unchanged. This way, she wouldn’t have to worry about forgetting the plot.

She quickly found the description of the first airdrop point’s location—the shipwreck on the beach.

It hadn’t changed!

Perfect.

She’d build the shelter right here. As soon as the alarm went off tomorrow morning, she’d go lie in ambush near the shipwreck, be the first to grab the airdrop, and observe the other competitors at the same time.

Liu Yinxi turned the page, wanting to check the information on other airdrop points, when an angry voice sounded by her ear. “Liu Yinxi, what are you doing—”

The voice was very pleasant, clear and cool like a breeze in a bamboo forest after the rain. It drifted past her ear, scattering the words before her eyes.

“Liu Yinxi! Let go!”

Liu Yinxi snapped back to reality. The system vanished from her vision, and the Nan Huaixu before her was glaring coldly, her slender right hand turning red from her grip.
