Not Even a Single Bite
Ever since Sun Miao posted about this snack, the group chat had the pot explode1. This time, it wasn’t just Group One; Group Two had also learned its lesson after having their faces slap-slap smacked2 by Sun Miao several rounds. When faced with a snack made by Sun Miao, you absolutely could not choose to question it first. Instead, you had to directly——believe!
You had to firmly believe that there was no such thing as a bad snack made by Sun Miao.
Although many people felt that deep-fried food was unhealthy and greasy and that eating too much of it was bad, the pursuit of meat was an indelible part of everyone’s nature. Even if they knew they shouldn’t eat too much fried food, they couldn’t help but think: Having a serving occasionally to reward myself won’t hurt.
Many Chinese people are like this: when they’re happy, they eat something good to reward themselves; when they’re unhappy, they eat something good to compensate themselves. And now, for many people in the group chat, “eating something good” and “eating something from Sun Miao’s stall” could have an equal sign drawn3 between them.
This was especially true for Hip-hop Mei; she felt that her life could no longer go on without Sun Miao. If Sun Miao were gone, she wouldn’t know what to do for every future meal. During times like this, when Sun Miao was on vacation, she could still get through the difficult days by constantly guessing, “What will Little Boss Sun sell tomorrow?”
But Yabi Mei was always dedicated to poking through Hip-hop Mei’s bubble of happiness: “Then what will you do when Little Boss Sun retires?”
Hip-hop Mei was stunned. She thought for a long time before saying, “She probably won’t retire that early, right?”
Yabi Mei had already seen through everything: “Hm? That’s not for sure. She earns quite a lot, and Little Boss Sun looks like the type of person who is content with a little wealth and easily satisfied. Now that her business is stable, she probably doesn’t want to bravely climb the high peak4. She also has a partner by her side who can provide her with emotional value5. In this situation, retiring early to travel the world with her lover, eating and drinking, and making delicious food for her along the way is also a pretty good choice.”
Yabi Mei rarely spoke in such long sentences. Her fundamental purpose in saying all this was to give Hip-hop Mei a sense of crisis, to make her cling tightly to Su Ruixi’s thigh, so that even after Sun Miao retired, the two of them could still go over to mooch meals6 from time to time.
She was very good at guiding Hip-hop Mei. After hearing what she said, Hip-hop Mei had already fallen into deep thought. But right at that moment, the notification sound for a specially-followed contact popped up on her phone. In almost the next second, Hip-hop Mei quickly, with a click, opened her phone and saw the message from Sun Miao.
Ever since Sun Miao got a new phone, her photography skills could be said to have advanced by leaps and bounds, especially when taking pictures of her own snacks. In the photo, the Bridgehead Pork Ribs were mostly contained in an oil paper bag, but a few pieces had scattered out, landing on the white paper Sun Miao had carefully prepared. Several golden-yellow pork ribs lay there crisply on the paper, still glistening with a bit of oil.
Hip-hop Mei’s saliva immediately began to flow shamelessly.
The Hulatang7 was delicious, the Youmo Tou8 was also delicious, and the Huaihua Fen9 before that was delicious too, but——none of them were as delicious as pure meat! Returning in a dream at midnight10, how many times had Hip-hop Mei thought of that tempting meaty meat? As an ultimate carnivore, she was filled with an absolute craving for meat.
Hip-hop Mei slurped up her drool and looked at Yabi Mei with eyes full of fervor. “Look! It’s meat! Deep-fried pork ribs!”
The moment Hip-hop Mei said this, Yabi Mei knew: It’s over. It’s all over. There’s definitely not a single thought in her head about what to do if Sun Miao retires. She’s been completely conquered by the pork ribs. Yabi Mei was so exasperated. At this point, she could only correct Hip-hop Mei, “It’s not deep-fried pork ribs, it’s Bridgehead Pork Ribs.”
“Aiya, it’s all the same. It’s just that the time isn’t very friendly, it’s at 2 o’clock. What time would be better for us to go tomorrow? If we go too late, there won’t even be any seats. What if we can’t get any to eat!”
As Hip-hop Mei’s strategist, Yabi Mei performed a series of calculations. “Let’s just find a restaurant nearby for lunch and grab a couple of bites. After we finish eating, we’ll go straight there and wait. No one should be earlier than us.”
And so, on the first day Sun Miao set up her stall to sell Bridgehead Pork Ribs, the Hip-hop Mei-Yabi Mei duo was once again at the very front of the line. To be honest, Sun Miao was always very impressed by Yabi Mei, because her clothes were always super gorgeous and beautiful. Today, she was in her standard Yà-style. Her top was basically a lingerie design worn on the outside, while her sleeves were wrapped up tightly, with wide, pleated cuffs. Her bottom half was also shorts, but similarly, both sides had long, multi-layered trailing skirts. On her feet were fluffy shoe covers over a pair of small leather shoes.
On the sleeves and skirt hem were large strings of black and purple bows, taking the three words “sub-culture” to the extreme.
She also had a lip ring and was holding a small parasol.
Her look alone was enough to make people on either side of her retreat three shè11, afraid of accidentally stepping on her skirt.
Maybe she specifically chose this gorgeous and exaggerated outfit to make it easier to hold a spot, Sun Miao thought, her spirit wandering beyond the heavens12. But she had to admit, Yabi Mei’s outfit was truly beautiful. In comparison, Hip-hop Mei, with her orange-red hair standing next to her, seemed somewhat eclipsed.
Normally, Hip-hop Mei’s style of dress should also have been the kind that sucks eyeballs13. Her wild, untamed, and exceptionally bright orange-red hair was particularly striking under the reflection of the sun. Her top was a camisole with a bright red leather jacket, and below she wore tight leather jeans of uneven lengths on the left and right, paired with a pair of studded thigh-high boots.
Just the two of them standing there was eye-catching enough.
However, because they were too eye-catching, other customers tended to retreat three shè. But Sun Miao was already used to it and calmly began to serve the two of them. This time, the Bridgehead Pork Ribs was limited to one serving per person. They didn’t have much to say about it and just ordered one serving each. Once the oil was hot and the ribs were cooked, they walked over to the side seats and started eating.
Yabi Mei was truly worthy of being a rich person; she didn’t care at all about her luxurious skirt falling on the ground as she squatted on one of Sun Miao’s small stools to eat.
Today, she was sitting facing Sun Miao. When Sun Miao unintentionally looked up, she saw Yabi Mei reach out and remove the lip ring from her lip.
“…” So it’s removable. She hadn’t seen her wear it recently and thought she had just gotten it pierced. Sun Miao had even been thinking of reminding Yabi Mei that it was best not to eat spicy food with a fresh lip piercing, but it turned out to be detachable.
Over there, the two of them were already eating, and eating very happily at that. It didn’t take them long to finish. After they finished, they didn’t forget to come find Sun Miao. Hip-hop Mei said plaintively, “Little Boss Sun, it’s not that this subordinate is criticizing you, but the portion size is really too small. It’s not enough to eat at all.”
There were quite a few people who shared her opinion, but Sun Miao still argued based on reason, “It’s all the standard portion, 150g. This subordinate brought a scale. Do you want to weigh it?”
“Forget it, no need.”
After the two of them left, the number of customers in front of her didn’t seem to decrease. This time, the Lemon Tea Boss and the Cat Owner also came. The Cat Owner was carrying a cat carrier, and Niu Niu inside started meowing nonstop as soon as she got near Sun Miao, seemingly remembering this person who would feed her delicious things.
But today, Niu Niu probably wasn’t going to get to eat.
Sun Miao glanced at the Cat Owner and said directly, “This meat has been marinated for too long, and it has a lot of seasonings in it. It also needs to be fried thoroughly later. Cats can’t eat it.”
Niu Niu’s meows were too cutesy and clingy. The Cat Owner was easily swayed. “Not even one bite?”
The Lemon Tea Boss next to her slapped her arm. “If she says no, she means no. Are you an idiot? It’s because you indulge Niu Niu too much that you’ve raised her to be so fat!”
Perhaps sensing that the Lemon Tea Boss wouldn’t let her eat the meaty meat, Niu Niu’s voice almost couldn’t hold it in14, and her meow even cracked a little. But with Sun Miao and the Lemon Tea Boss lecturing her one after another, the Cat Owner could only sigh. “Alright, then Niu Niu can’t eat.”
This time, Niu Niu completely couldn’t hold it in. Her “meow meow meow” turned into “aowu aowu.” Hearing this, Sun Miao couldn’t help but chuckle. “Next time this subordinate has something Niu Niu can eat, you can bring her again.”
“Okay.”
The two of them each ordered a serving. Since there were no seats left, they just sat down on the curb. The Cat Owner put down the cat carrier, and the Lemon Tea Boss took out two cans of Sprite from her bag. Her action immediately made the other customers around them stare with wide eyes: What, you can do that?!
It had to be said, the Lemon Tea Boss was truly a very well-prepared person. This was evident from the last time when she brought her own table and chairs for the fried skewers and even sneakily sold drinks next to Sun Miao’s stall. However, just as the Lemon Tea Boss was handing a drink to the Cat Owner, she saw that the Cat Owner’s Bridgehead Pork Ribs was just sitting there, leaning against the cat carrier.
Niu Niu’s little paw had actually unzipped the carrier and was trying hard to reach out from inside, attempting to rake the Bridgehead Pork Ribs toward herself.
“Hey, what are you doing! Niu Niu! No eating!”
Niu Niu’s little paw retracted with a swoosh. It was clear that, compared to the Cat Owner, the Lemon Tea Boss was significantly more intimidating to her.
The “aowu aowu” that she couldn’t hold in also changed back to “meow meow meow.”
Watching this scene unfold, not just Sun Miao, but even the regular customers around them started laughing. “Give it a piece, hahaha, it looks so pitiful.” But such comments quickly turned into envy toward the Lemon Tea Boss and the Cat Owner. The crisp click of the Sprite can being opened, along with the sound of bubbles fizzing up, made the regular customers antsy.
A bite of Bridgehead Pork Ribs, followed by a sip of Sprite—that was truly no ordinary enjoyment.
The regular customers clenched their teeth, vowing that when they came tomorrow, they absolutely could not forget to bring a serving of happy water15! Otherwise, just standing there watching others eat would be a form of torture.
Sun Miao had arrived at 2 o’clock. Including the preparation time, it only took two hours before she went home at 4 o’clock. As Sun Miao packed up to leave, she had to face greetings from some regular customers who hadn’t left yet. “Little Boss Sun, you prepared too little! Just these few servings sold out in two hours. And each serving is so small, it’s not even enough to fill the gaps between the teeth16!”
Sun Miao was already used to the customers’ unreasonable complaints. She explained again and again, “It really is the standard weight. It can be weighed.”
With great difficulty, Sun Miao finally extracted herself from the regular customers. She drove all the way back to her residential complex and happened to run into Grandma Li walking her dog. Their Samoyed was always very enthusiastic whenever it saw Sun Miao, and today it was even more exaggerated, charging directly toward her.
