Panda Cub – Chapter 24

Secret

“Xu Yu.”

Hu Tu let out a cold sneer – it would be best not to run into her, otherwise…

Observing Hu Tu’s expression, He Ying wisely chose not to say anything more. She glanced at Jing Dan and realized that at some point, Jing Dan had lowered her head to fiddle with her phone, not even sparing them a glance.

The air around her was tense, clearly something was off.

He Ying: “…”

When did this person get angry? And what exactly is she angry about?

Regaining her composure, Hu Tu remembered there was a matter at hand, “Right, our show is starting filming in a few days, isn’t it? We were thinking of holding a commencement ceremony. Make sure you come and join in to get familiar with the other guests beforehand.”

“A commencement ceremony?” He Ying wondered. Do variety shows even have such things?

“Yes,” Hu Tu nodded, pointing at Jing Dan, “That was her idea. She said that if others have it, we should too, and ours has to be even better.”

Thinking back on it made her want to laugh. She had told them at the time not to be too competitive, but to her astonishment, Jing Dan responded saying she wasn’t human but a spirit, and therefore it didn’t apply to her. Hu Tu had to admit she was at a loss – what difference did it make whether one was a spirit or a human in this context?

Once again, He Ying fell silent, not having realized it, but Jing Dan actually had a competitive streak.

“…Alright, I got it.”

“Oh right, remember to dress up and look good, don’t show up underdressed.” Indeed, He Ying was very beautiful, but in the entertainment industry full of beauties, she feared being overshadowed if she didn’t dress up.

He Ying’s gaze was deep as she looked toward her, “Do you think my beauty is something that needs to be set off by others?”

She was naturally beautiful, okay!

Hu Tu: “…”

Is this really something to be concerned about? Even if you are beautiful, you can’t just go without dressing up!

Hearing their conversation, Jing Dan’s gaze inadvertently fell on He Ying’s face—her skin was white and tender, reminiscent of a fine piece of jade, giving off a translucent quality. Combined with her affectionate peach-blossom eyes, she exuded an approachable and kind charm.

At first glance, she was stunning; upon closer inspection, her beauty seemed to emanate from deep within, radiating from her bones—incredibly striking yet enduringly graceful.

Before He Ying could look her way, she quickly averted her gaze, thinking that Hu Tu’s reminder was utterly unnecessary.

He Ying was still very beautiful. Even in such simple casual attire, she looked great.

The trio chatted for a while longer. When Hu Tu stood up, she looked at He Ying, “Why haven’t you moved? Aren’t you leaving?”

He Ying slowly raised her head to glance at her, then turned her gaze back to Jing Dan, who was engrossed in her phone, and said, “I’ll leave in a bit.”

Jing Dan, who sat on the other side, paused her finger on the screen, instinctively wanting to look up but seemed to think better of it, quickly ceasing her motion and continuing to look at her phone as if nothing was amiss.

Hu Tu watched her in silence, yet He Ying met her gaze with complete transparency, making Hu Tu’s worries seem like unwarranted suspicions.

Hu Tu: “…Alright then, don’t stay here too long; she has to work.” She gestured towards Jing Dan.

He Ying replied with a smile, “Understood.”

The one being referred to, Jing Dan, looked at Hu Tu with a stretched face and an expressionless visage. What did Hu Tu mean by ‘she still has to work’? It was her rest time!

Hu Tu finally left with a complex expression on her face.

Once Hu Tu was gone, the spacious office became so silent that one could almost hear a pin drop, save for the barely audible breathing sounds, eerily quiet.

He Ying quietly observed her, and the woman she was looking at had a cold and stern expression, as though someone owed her eight million.

“What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly angry?” He Ying’s tone was somewhat gentle, as though laced with a soothing quality. She sat next to Jing Dan and peeled a banana for her, offering it to her softly, “Want to eat?”

Jing Dan: “…”

Her gaze involuntarily fell on the banana, her face taut, unwilling to speak.

He Ying silently chuckled, holding the banana to Jing Dan’s mouth, pretending she was going to feed her.

Jing Dan: “…What are you doing!”

Her complexion changed slightly, and she quickly took the banana over, intending to reproach her for her behavior!

“Obviously, feeding you the banana,” He Ying raised an eyebrow, completely breaking into laughter.

Jing Dan: “…I can eat by myself, there’s no need for you to feed me!”

She wasn’t someone incapacitated, without use of her hands or feet; why would she need someone else to feed her a banana?!

Seeing her slowly eating by herself, He Ying simply sat beside her, keeping her company. After Jing Dan had almost finished eating, He Ying finally said, “Alright, can you now tell me what you’re upset about?”

Seeing her obediently finish eating, and then dutifully throwing the waste into the trash bin and wiping her hands with a wet wipe, He Ying felt a suppressed laugh inside; she really was like that meticulous little child in the way she did things.

Jing Dan finished a banana and then her gaze settled on a mango. Although she wanted to eat it, she didn’t feel like peeling it herself.

Peeling mangoes was such a hassle and would dirty her freshly cleaned hands; it would also be sticky and uncomfortable.

Seeing her ignore her once more, He Ying bit her lip slightly; this was truly a bratty kid who knew how to get on one’s nerves!

She believed that Jing Dan must not have been properly disciplined as a child; otherwise, she wouldn’t have developed such an infuriating temperament!

She reached out, and under Jing Dan’s gaze, she took that bright yellow mango, drawing her eyes onto herself, and raised an eyebrow, “Want to eat?”

This person had eaten so much of the food she’d made earlier, and now she could still eat; she was really impressed by that appetite.

Jing Dan stared at the mango in her hand, pursed her lips, and decided not to respond.

To deal with someone like this, He Ying truly had her ways.

In front of Jing Dan, she leisurely took out the tools to peel the mango skin, then cut it into pieces and put them into a bowl, cradling it in her arms, eating leisurely with a small fork.

Jing Dan: “…”

She thought that He Ying would peel it for her to eat!

He Ying smiled at her: “It’s quite delicious, very sweet.”

Jing Dan: “…”

He Ying continued to put another piece into her mouth, smiling, “So, how about it? Are you willing to tell me now?”

Jing Dan continued to keep a stiff face, but her gaze was fixedly staring at the contents of the bowl, watching as the mango pieces in the bowl diminished bit by bit.

He Ying continued to fork another piece into her mouth, “There’s not much left.”

This slow torture, slice by slice, was evidently making her restless.

“I’m not angry,” Jing Dan muttered.

However, He Ying clearly didn’t believe her, “You say you’re not angry with that kind of expression?”

Did she think her discontent was not apparent? Or was there some misconception about her own ability to conceal it?

Jing Dan: “…”

She wouldn’t say it; even she herself didn’t know why she had gotten inexplicably angry.

He Ying sighed gently and handed the bowl to Jing Dan, not pressing her further, “If you don’t want to talk, then don’t. Who doesn’t have a few secrets?”

Jing Dan’s eyes flickered, and she looked at He Ying, “You have secrets too?”

“Of course, and quite a few at that,” He Ying said with a smile, her gaze soft upon Jing Dan. She had lived 203 years; the secrets she held were perhaps too numerous to count.

Jing Dan lowered her head and silently ate the mango slices He Ying had peeled, the rich and fragrant fruit bursting with sweetness between her teeth, sending a delightful sensation to her brain. Perhaps she just disliked being excluded from their conversation.

That feeling of sitting together in a group of three, yet not knowing what the others were talking about, was truly uncomfortable.

Seeing the mango in the bowl was nearly finished, she asked, “Would you like some more?”

Jing Dan looked at her and nodded.

He Ying chuckled, feeling a bit of an internal sigh. How could there be someone like her, so eager to be used by others as a tool?

As she ate the mango He Ying prepared for her, Jing Dan glanced at her and mentally awarded her ten points.

The total score, a positive ten points.

The author has something to say:

Jing Xiaodan: Ten points, that’s very high! You used to be in the negatives!

He He: …

LP: I need more sweetness!
