Wolf Pack
In the middle of the night, Ren Chenxi was groggily shaken awake. Half-asleep, she remembered she was on the second watch shift. Keeping watch with her were Huo Keyu and Jian Dan.
She checked the in-game time and saw it was already past midnight. Ren Chenxi instantly perked up, summoned the Lottery Center1 and began a new round of Free Draws2. With a new draw available every ten minutes, Ren Chenxi managed to pull an Outfit Change Card, a Flash Card, and a Greasy Card before finally getting an Explosion Card. Pulling an R Card directly put her in a great mood. She occasionally peeked outside through the cracks in the wooden planks, waiting for the next ten-minute countdown.
After the apocalypse began, most of the country had lost power. The streetlights in the cities were now just decorations, let alone in these rural towns that never had any to begin with. The only source of light was the moon in the sky, completely unaffected by the end of the world. So every time Ren Chenxi looked out the window, she was using the bright moonlight to gaze at the pitch-black patch of wild grass in the distance. As she pulled her gaze back from the grass, ready for her next card draw, she subconsciously glanced at her mini-map again. The sight made her jump to her feet.
The mini-map, which had been perfectly fine just moments before, showing only the Green Dots of everyone in the house, was suddenly swarming with Red Dots. Steeling herself, Ren Chenxi did a quick count—there were at least thirty of them!
“What’s wrong?” The moment Ren Chenxi stood up, Huo Keyu looked over alertly.
“Wake everyone up. We have a situation. It’s most likely a Mutated Beast attack!” Seeing how fast they were moving, the only thing Ren Chenxi could think of was Mutated Beasts.
Hearing this, Huo Keyu and Jian Dan moved as quickly as they could, shaking each person awake. Some were still dazed from sleep, but before they could even speak, they were warned in a hushed voice, “Shh, don’t make a sound. Mutated Beasts!”
Everyone was awake now, nervously crowding the windows to look outside. And then, they saw them. From the patch of wild grass three hundred meters away, pairs of green eyes began to emerge, one after another. The eerie green glow was enough to make everyone break out in a cold sweat.
“Goodness me!3 Look at all those eyes… it’s not a Wolf Pack4, is it?” Yang Xiangrui was so nervous his teeth were chattering.
“Everyone, stay quiet. These Mutated Beasts might not be coming for us. If we wait quietly, maybe they’ll leave…”
Faced with such a large pack of mutated wolves, everyone silently prayed that the Wolf Pack was just passing through…
However, wolves were already predators with an extremely keen sense of smell. After being mutated by the apocalypse, they could probably smell the scent of living humans from a great distance, right? Especially since among this pack of mutated wolves, there were actually three 4th-Order Mutated Wolves!
Ren Chenxi watched nervously as the pack slowed down, circled the bus, and then headed straight for their house. In that moment, everyone’s nerves were stretched to the absolute limit.
Bang—
A 3rd-Order Mutated Wolf tried to ram the dilapidated door. Fortunately, they had piled enough furniture behind it. Even though the door was broken, there was still a massive cabinet blocking the way.
“Wh-what do we do… They’ve found us…” Song Xin’s voice trembled as she turned to Ren Chenxi for help.
Bang—
Before Ren Chenxi could answer, another window was smashed to pieces by a mutated wolf’s claw.
“All of you, spread out! Jian Dan, you, Song Xin, and Chang Ling, guard that window. Don’t worry about the noise, just attack those mutated wolves. Kill as many as you can. Zhu Kang, go guard the other window and attack as soon as it breaks. Lu Ping, come here, stand by my side…”
As Ren Chenxi spoke, she backed away a few steps. The music from Jian Dan and the others’ instruments began to play. Lu Ping obediently walked over to Ren Chenxi’s side, and just as she was about to ask what she was supposed to do, a black off-road vehicle suddenly appeared before her.
“Xi-jie…”
Before Lu Ping could even ask where the off-road vehicle came from, Ren Chenxi pushed her in front of it. “Lu Ping, use your strength to press this vehicle against the main door and hold it steady, no matter what!”
The main door of the house was quite large; a mutated wolf could easily squeeze through. The broken window, however, had an opening too small for even one wolf to get through easily, which made it a great chokepoint for a counterattack.
After telling Lu Ping to block the entrance, Ren Chenxi walked over to the broken window. By now, Jian Dan’s Sonic Wave Attack had temporarily driven back the wolves at the window. However, they hadn’t left. They just stared from a short distance away with their glowing green eyes.
“Jian Dan, go to that window over there. Tang Ying, crystallize as many useless things in this room as you can. Everyone else, help me break the crystals.”
She still had eight Greasy Cards, but Ren Chenxi mainly wanted to use them on the three 4th-Order Mutated Wolves. Among this pack of low-tier wolves, it was those three mid-tier ones that gave her the strongest sense of pressure. A single 4th-Order Mutated Leopard had been enough to send them running for their lives, and now three 4th-Order Mutated Wolves had shown up at once? This was a disaster.
Thank god I still have a God card5 like the Greasy Card! As long as I can make these three 4th-Order Mutated Wolves all greasy, I can greatly reduce their threat level! After all, a mutated wolf that slips with every step is even less of a threat than a normal wolf~
With that thought, Ren Chenxi gripped a Greasy Card. Peering through the hole in the window, she locked her eyes on the 4th-Order Mutated Wolf that was stealthily trying to approach the window again.
Swoosh—
The Greasy Card shot through the hole, flying accurately toward the 4th-Order Mutated Wolf. And then, Ren Chenxi saw a large “MISS” float up from above its head.
???
How can the Greasy Card miss??? My hit rate is 100%! How the tm can this miss?
In disbelief, Ren Chenxi pulled up her Backpack Panel6 again, glaring at the remaining seven Greasy Cards. She checked the Card Information7 one more time, reading with extreme care.
Greasy Card: A target hit by the Greasy Card will continuously secrete oil for 5 minutes. Killing the target will drop an additional bottle of random oil.
(Note: When hitting a mid-tier8 enemy, there is only a 35% chance of causing the oil effect. When hitting a high-tier9 enemy, there is only a 0.5% chance.)
The text in the parentheses at the bottom was truly tiny, and its font color was very similar to the panel’s background. Ren Chenxi hadn’t looked closely before and had completely missed it!
Pah!10 And I thought the Greasy Card was the God card of N Cards! Turns out it’s basically useless against mid-tier enemies! Wait, it just happened to work against the Mutated Leopard, but that was pure luck! That was just one 4th-order beast, and now there are three 4th-order wolves! And I’ve already wasted one card!
Wait, wait, don’t tell me my other supposed God card also has a probability thing against mid-tier mutated beasts?
Thinking this, she quickly went to check the Flash Card’s information. Thankfully, after carefully reading the card’s details word for word twice, Ren Chenxi finally felt relieved.
The Flash Card had no level restrictions. As long as it hit the target, it would cause a 20-second Blinding Effect11.
Just as Ren Chenxi finished reading the card’s info, Song Xin let out a low cry, “Xi-jie, the wolf pack is getting closer!”
The 4th-Order Mutated Wolf that had been unaffected by the Greasy Card must have sensed something, but when nothing happened after a moment, it grew bold again and led the charge, rapidly advancing a few more steps toward the house. Ren Chenxi didn’t give the pack another chance to get close and quickly flung a Flash Card at them.
At some point, the moon had been obscured by a thick bank of clouds. The darker the environment, the more terrifying the wolves’ glowing green eyes became. Just as they were about to use the darkness to launch another surprise attack, a brilliant light flashed. The leading 4th-Order Mutated Wolf instantly let out a howl. The nearly ten wolves right behind it also began to wail in agony.
The howling from these dozen wolves immediately halted the other mutated wolves that were slowly advancing from a distance. At the same time, the wolves affected by the Blinding Effect, despite being unable to see, cautiously and quickly retreated.
But no matter how far they retreated, they were still within Ren Chenxi’s Attack Range12. By now, a pile of broken crystals had accumulated at her feet, and her backpack was stocked with crystal shards suitable for use as sharp weapons. She seized the brief 20-second window, aiming for the mutated wolves’ weak points and attacking them one by one. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to throw multiple crystals at once; it was because her Combat System13‘s aiming cursor14 could only lock onto one enemy at a time. Even if she threw a dozen crystals, they would all hit the same single wolf.
However, Ren Chenxi used this to her advantage, picking off the 2nd and 3rd-order mutated wolves first. It basically took five or six crystal spikes to bring down one mutated wolf. At the very least, she could blind one of them. Some of the 3rd-order mutated wolves had thick skin and tough flesh, and their skulls were even harder, but their thin eyelids were a weak point. Ren Chenxi specifically aimed for the wolves’ eyes, even throwing a few long, sharp crystal strips at the 4th-Order Mutated Wolf.
Unfortunately, the 4th-Order Mutated Wolf’s alertness was still very high. The crystals she threw at it were always dodged at the last second, just before the spike could pierce its eye. It would flick its head away, causing the crystal to hit its thicker face or head instead.
If only I had an SR-Rank Explosion Card, she thought. Then no matter how this mutated wolf dodged, it couldn’t escape the fate of a headshot.
The 20 seconds passed quickly. In that wave of attacks, Ren Chenxi had finished off five mutated wolves and blinded four more. Such an impressive result immediately stunned the S University students. Almost everyone crowded around to help smash crystals. Tang Ying, ignoring how dirty things were, began turning everything in the room—be it torn clothes or filthy rags—into things that were perfectly crystal clear15.
Wolves are ferocious but cunning animals. After this sudden turn of events, they all retreated to a distance of 100 meters, watching warily. Ren Chenxi secretly sighed in regret. Her Sure Hit skill had only just reached level 6.
“Xi-jie, do you think the pack will be scared off?”
“Don’t lower your guard. This wolf pack won’t give up on its prey so easily. Besides, wolves are vengeful animals. We’ve killed so many of their companions, do you think they’ll let us go?”
“Then… then what do we do?”
“Tang Ying, can you still use your ability? Crystallize as many items as you can. Everyone else, just help me sharpen both ends and keep the item’s original size. No need to break them into small pieces anymore.”
While she was attacking the mutated wolves with the crystals, Ren Chenxi had discovered something. While her throws were 100% accurate, the impact force of the crystal was related to its size, in addition to her own initial throwing strength. The crystals that had been able to fatally pierce a wolf’s eye were all about the size of two fists.
From this, Ren Chenxi deduced that as long as the object she threw was heavy enough, it would receive a Strength bonus16.
