Life is Like a Journey – Chapter 26

Volume 1: Rise

Medical Disturbance

The medical disturbance has arrived

Entering the ICU on the second day, Gu Yanzhi woke up. In just two short days, she had become so thin as if shedding a layer of skin, with protruding cheekbones, sunken eyes, and a gaze that dimmed, revealing deep fatigue.

Lu Qingshi knew that her injuries this time would likely require a long recovery before her body’s functions could return to normal. Gu Yanzhi, with difficulty, turned her head towards her, with mist rising on the oxygen mask, as if wanting to say something.

Lu Qingshi gently took it down, leaned in to listen, and she intermittently uttered two words: “Han… Hamburger…”

“Don’t worry, I will take good care of it,” Lu Qingshi whispered by her ear to ensure she could hear more clearly.

The explosion’s shockwave not only shattered her organs but also would inevitably cause irreversible damage to her hearing.

Thinking of this, Lu Qingshi’s gaze dimmed somewhat, but the other lightly nodded, seemingly wanting to smile but wincing from the pain of the wound.

“One ampoule of Dolantin1,” she instructed the nurse to take the medicine, lifted her sleeve, and personally gave her the injection.

“Sleep, you need to rest now.”

It was unclear whether she understood, but under the effect of the medication, she quickly fell into sleep, her long eyelashes resting on her eyelids. Lu Qingshi covered her with a quilt, instructed the nurse to always pay attention to her vital signs changes, and then left the ICU.

“Wow, Teacher Qin is very skillful; such a small child’s intubation went in immediately.”

Having spent a long time with Qin Xuan, Yu Gui adeptly called her Teacher Qin, and her flattery was quite smooth.

Qin Xuan was delighted by the praise: “Want to learn? Come, I’ll teach you.”

Yu Gui was overjoyed and excitedly rubbed her hands: “Ah, really? Will Teacher Lu be unhappy…”

Qin Xuan rolled her eyes: “Why care about her? She always wears a deadpan face, with a temper that’s both foul and hard. When she stands here, she lowers the temperature of your entire emergency department.”

Speaking of this, Yu Gui quietly muttered with resentment: “The regular training students who came in the same period as me can already independently perform small surgeries, yet Teacher Lu has never brought me to the operating table.”

She seemed to have completely forgotten the various mistakes she made and the complaints she received during her first time on stage.

Hao Renjie coughed heavily: “Well, I’ll go check if the drip on bed five is finished.”

“Hey, wait for me, I’m going too.”

“There’s a patient next door waiting for me to debride; I’ll go first.”

In an instant, all the medical staff in the emergency room claimed they were too busy, and Qin Xuan touched her nose: “Strange, weren’t they just chatting away with me?”

Yu Gui inexplicably felt a bit cold and sneezed: “Is the air conditioning set a bit low today?”

She went to grab the air conditioning remote control and, upon turning her head, instantly wore an expression as if she’d seen a ghost, nearly collapsing to her knees. She quickly stood upright, bowed, and lowered her head like an ostrich.

“Good morning, Teacher Lu. Have you had breakfast? You came so early, you must not have had breakfast. I’ll go buy it for you!”

Lu Qingshi stood with arms crossed, leaning against the door, expressionless, but her gaze made Yu Gui’s hair stand on end.

Yu Gui planned to sneak out but was caught by the back collar and pulled back: “So eager to be on surgery?”

Yu Gui, wanting to cry but having no tears, replied: “No, I don’t want to…”

Lu Qingshi nodded: “There’s an intestinal obstruction surgery this afternoon. You come with me.”

Qin Xuan swallowed and planned to sneak out quietly from the back door, but Lu Qingshi turned her head and shouted towards the triage desk: “Sister Hao, report to the medical office that I said the emergency department is short-staffed, and transfer Doctor Qin from Obstetrics and Gynecology. Doesn’t she just happen to have…”

Qin Xuan rushed over, clinging to her white coat, and squeezed out two tears: “I beg you, ancestor! Don’t transfer me. The emergency department is harsh, dirty, tiring, and there’s no surgery subsidy. It’s not a place for people to stay!”

Lu Qingshi disdainfully pried her hands off her brand new white coat: “Not a place for people to stay?”

“Wrongly said, only someone like you, an extraordinarily outstanding genius doctor, with such high integrity and noble spirit, who is so considerate of patients, willing to dedicate, with boundless great love, great and extraordinary can stay here!”

This rainbow fart (flattery) left Yu Gui dumbfounded.

Lu Qingshi nodded: “Then in the future for emergency consultations?”

Qin Xuan nodded and bowed: “At your call.”

Lu Qingshi, satisfied, stepped aside to open the door: “Scram.”

“Thank you, Director Lu, for your magnanimity, adults don’t remember the faults of small people, goodbye Director Lu!”

Qin Xuan, with a bitter face, had to force a smile to say goodbye, while inside she was already full of tears.

Their Nth confrontation ended again with her complete defeat, rolling in the dirt.

At noon, during lunch, the canteen had a limited supply of braised big chicken legs. To make up for her morning’s slip of the tongue and afraid she might actually be transferred to the emergency department, Qin Xuan came early to line up, getting two chicken leg meals to show diligence.

Lu Qingshi sat down opposite her, reached into her pocket with one hand, and took out two transparent gloves to put on.

Qin Xuan looked bewildered: “What are you doing? Haven’t you come out of work mode yet???”

Lu Qingshi glanced at her without speaking, swiftly pulled out a scalpel, which startled Qin Xuan, almost spilling her soup, and she covered her face: “I just scolded you once, no need to operate on me, right!”

After waiting for a while, the scalpel didn’t touch her, and when she opened her eyes, she saw the other person elegantly deboning a chicken leg with the scalpel.

“Blood vessels and nerves dissection completed.”

“Deboning completed.”

“Ready to eat.”

Qin Xuan thought of the organs dissected under her hand and suddenly felt a wave of nausea—she couldn’t eat the meal.

During the noon break, as usual, Yu Gui called Fang Zhiyou to chat about recent events. Hearing her say her mother was much better and had joined a gaming studio as a surrogate, earning quite a bit of money, Yu Gui felt genuinely happy for her. Seeing the lunch break almost over, she hung up and hurriedly ran to eat. Just as she reached the hospital lobby, a middle-aged woman pulled her aside.

“Excuse me, do you know where Yu Gui, Doctor Yu, is?”

Yu Gui inexplicably felt this woman looked somewhat familiar and excitedly said: “Ah, that’s me!”

“You are?” the middle-aged woman smiled, reaching for her vegetable basket.

Yu Gui patted her head and finally remembered: “Ah, you’re An’an’s mother…”

Before she could finish her sentence, a rotten egg was thrown at her, and the middle-aged woman lunged, tearing at her clothes and hair: “I curse your mother, who allowed you to saw off my An’an’s leg! You heartless, conscienceless doctors, my child is still so young, and you amputated her. How will she live the rest of her life! My poor An’an!”

While speaking and howling, yet not shedding a tear, Yu Gui was pushed and shoved, and held An’an’s mother’s hand: “Let me explain…”

“Explain nothing! Give me back An’an’s life! You have such ruthless hearts! How can you do this to such a small child! Everyone come and see! How the doctors at Renji Medical University’s First Affiliated Hospital profit from death and earn heartless money! Pity my poor An’an, born with cerebral palsy and now amputated—how will she live the rest of her life!”

As the middle-aged woman cried and howled loudly, more and more people gathered around, with some passersby pointing at Yu Gui. The outpatient lobby was also stormed by a group carrying a banner reading “Profit from death, return my child’s legs.”

Once they rushed in, the nurses couldn’t stop them, and they hurled rotten vegetable leaves and eggs at Yu Gui while shouting and cursing, pushing her around.

“Not human!”

“Beast!”

“How can you do this to such a small child!”

“For money, they’ll do anything!”

(If you're not reading on littlepandatranslations.com, it means this has been stolen)

“Heartless, such people should have their medical license revoked!”

“Today we must demand an explanation, call your hospital leaders out, or we won’t leave!”

“Yes, we won’t leave!”

Egg yolk stuck in her hair slowly dripped down, Yu Gui peeled off the rotten vegetable leaves from her clothes, and her beautiful eyes turned red. Looking at the bossy middle-aged woman, whose child was someone she had risked her life to save, the misunderstanding, grievance, and heartache surged in her heart. Yu Gui choked up: “At that time, the situation required amputation, she… she was crushed under a metal cabinet, with a comminuted fracture below the thigh, and her wrist still tied with…”

The middle-aged woman, who had been sitting on the ground crying for sympathy, suddenly leaped up and slapped her hard: “You shut up, you compensate me for An’an’s legs!!!”

This act undoubtedly threw a bomb into the crowd, and emotions ran high as they swarmed and pressed down on Yu Gui. All the rotten vegetable leaves, eggs, shoes, and socks were thrown at her all at once.

“Yes, make her pay for An’an’s life!”

“Beat her, beat this heartless person to death!”

Yu Gui struggled, her name badge was pulled to the ground. She tried to pick it up but was pushed down, facing a barrage of punches and kicks. She reached out to protect her fragile head, and her slender wrist was kicked away. Red-eyed, she watched her name badge being kicked further, trampled repeatedly under everyone’s feet, covered in dirt.

Hao Renjie tried to pull her away but was also forced into the fray, getting hit by several rotten eggs, as the scene became increasingly chaotic.

The professional medical troublemakers went on to smash the triage desk, destroy the water dispenser, and drive away the patients waiting in the lobby, shouting to make the hospital pay and to dismiss Yu Gui.

Seeing the situation deteriorating, Liu Qingyun quickly called the medical office, then asked the head nurse: “Where’s Director Xu?”

“Went out this morning, seemed to say there was some academic conference.”

What academic conference could he attend? Most likely a banquet hosted by pharmaceutical representatives. Liu Qingyun hung up and quickly called Lu Qingshi.

Lu Qingshi, while cutting the chicken leg meat into small pieces with a scalpel, asked: “Last time in your department, did Chen Qiao’er report to the police?”

Speaking of this, Qin Xuan sighed again: “Our department’s doctors take turns talking until their lips are almost worn out, but if people are unwilling, what can you do? They say family shame can’t be publicized. If we report to the police, they say they’ll sue us for leaking patient privacy. We’re caught in the middle, neither side is human. People, if only they had no conscience, it’d be easier.”

Lu Qingshi frowned, just about to speak when the phone on the table vibrated. She answered, her face changed, put down the scalpel, and ran.

Qin Xuan also stood up, shouting at her back: “Hey, where are you going? The meal’s not finished!”

The entire outpatient lobby was in chaos, with rotten eggs flying everywhere, big-character posters on the walls, banners pulled, the water dispenser toppled, and the professional medical troublemakers clashing with medical staff.

Lu Qingshi picked up Yu Gui’s name badge from a pile of rotten vegetable leaves and put it in her pocket, then helped Hao Renjie off the ground. He looked as if he’d seen a savior and was about to cry: “Sister Lu…”

Lu Qingshi nodded and continued walking in. An egg flew towards her, and she caught it steadily in her hand, the egg yolk flowing through her fingers. A man swung a punch at Yu Gui’s head, and she quickly blocked it, her palm numbed from the impact. She smoothly pushed him away and pulled the embarrassed Yu Gui up from the ground, whispering: “Go to the back.”

Several colleagues pulled Yu Gui to stand behind the triage desk. She kept her head down, her face bruised, and tears silently slid down her cheeks as she softly sobbed.

The man still wanted to rush forward, but Lu Qingshi stood calmly, her hands clearly in her white coat pockets, yet exuding an aura of authority without anger.

“Don’t come any closer. If you do, I’ll call the police immediately.”

“Who are you? Let your hospital leader come out!” someone shouted.

Lu Qingshi displayed her credentials: “I am the leader. Who is your leader?”

The crowd looked at each other, knowing that pushing a leader forward would be like admitting they were troublemakers.

Finally, the middle-aged woman reluctantly stepped forward: “I… I am An’an’s mother… We have no leader; they’re all my neighbors who spontaneously gathered to help me seek justice seeing us as an orphan and widow.”

“You are the patient’s family?” Lu Qingshi nodded: “Sister Chen, has Director Liu from the medical office arrived?”

The anesthesiologist in the group obediently said: “Director Lu, Director Liu is waiting in the meeting room.”

“Please, if you’re dissatisfied with anything, go communicate with the medical office. The outpatient lobby is not the place for you to run wild.”

(If you're not reading on littlepandatranslations.com, it means this has been stolen)

The man still wanted to rush forward but was suddenly firmly grabbed by the arm. He turned to see a fully armed police officer, and his body immediately softened.

“This… Officer…”

The police officers from the nearby hospital’s station were long accustomed to dealing with medical disturbances, eight out of ten times being due to such issues.

“Come on, brother, let’s go to the police station for some tea.”

“No, officer, we’re just helping, just helping…”

The officer pointed at Yu Gui standing against the wall: “Helping and you beat someone like this?”

Seeing the situation turning bad, someone planned to quietly slip out of the outpatient lobby. Lu Qingshi gave Liu Qingyun a look, and he immediately, along with security, blocked the entrance.

“And for the damaged items, head nurse, count the losses and report them truthfully.”

“As for…” she glanced at Yu Gui: “Go get an injury assessment.”

By doing so, she wasn’t planning to settle this easily, and Yu Gui felt grateful in her heart: “Teacher Lu…”

“Go, get an X-ray and have a thorough examination.”
