The director made a final decision, so the surgery is now a certainty. After the meeting, Lu Qingshi returned to the ward and instructed the attending doctor to perform a full-body CT and angiography for Wang Youshi.
The hepatobiliary attending doctor nodded and agreed but secretly rolled her eyes after Lu Qingshi left: “Hey, the emergency department’s hand really does stretch quite far.”
That said, the instructions from the superior doctor were not to be delayed, so the imaging department was immediately scheduled.
After everyone left, it was Dean Meng, who was less agile, who lagged behind, being supported by Director Liu of the medical office as they walked and talked.
“When Dr. Lu left the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, she was entangled in lawsuits, and her resume was full of stains. You broke the rules to hire her and even arranged for her to be the deputy chief physician of the emergency department. “Alright, Old Liu, say a little less,” Dean Meng walked slowly, speaking sincerely: “Aren’t we short of people?! Look, where are there still young people willing to study medicine? After enduring ten years of hard study, endless exams, and finally graduating to enter a hospital, they still have to undergo standardized training, be exploited by senior doctors, and get complained about by patients. If they’re not careful, there might even be someone with a knife ready to kill them, and they might lose their lives.”
“In such a harsh environment, every child willing to pursue medicine deserves respect. Moreover, Lu Qingshi is capable. Don’t mention the emergency department, in any department, she is in demand. The two have been close friends for many years and have made indelible contributions to the establishment and development of this university hospital. Privately, Director Liu naturally relaxed more.

“Hurry, give a hand and send him to the emergency room, call your Teacher Lu!”
“One, two, three,” the medical staff at the triage desk worked together to lift him onto the stretcher. The girl was in tears, desperately shaking her dad: “Dad! Dad! Wake up! Dad!”
Yu Gui and several nurses together pushed the gurney and ran, shouting as they ran: “Teacher Lu!!! Save a life!!!”
As soon as the gurney left, the triage desk became packed again, with someone resentfully pointing in the direction the gurney left: “Didn’t they say to line up? I clearly saw they didn’t even get a number and just went in directly!”
Hao Renjie, with one hand on his waist and the other with a raised orchid finger, spoke quickly: “Didn’t you see they lay on the ground as soon as they arrived? That’s the emergency room. If you start foaming at the mouth, rolling your eyes, have convulsions, weak breathing, pulse, and low blood pressure, you can go in too! How about it, big brother wants to try?”
Lu Qingshi had just finished debridement1 and suturing for a patient. As the curtain was pulled open, she quickly removed her gloves and tossed them into the medical waste bin, and the nurse handed her new ones.
“Push over here.”
“Bring the bedside ultrasound over.”
“Connect the ECG as well.”
Lu Qingshi quickly cut open his clothing and used a penlight to check his pupils: “Establish intravenous access, drip amiodarone.”2
As soon as the cardiac monitor was connected, the machine began to alarm: “Director Lu, ventricular fibrillation!”3
“Give me the defibrillator,” Yu Gui quickly handed over the defibrillator.
With the charge complete, Lu Qingshi pressed the defibrillator on: “Call the cardiothoracic department to come down for a consultation.”
Watching her calm and composed demeanor in the face of change, Yu Gui sincerely felt a sense of admiration and longing.

The patient was quickly rescued from the brink of life and death. Lu Qingshi swung the stethoscope onto her neck: “Don’t just stand there, this patient might have mitral stenosis4. Observe him more, and inquire about his past medical history.”
“Oh, okay! I got it,” Yu Gui responded, picking up the medical record with enthusiasm.
“Doctor Lu, please come and look at this patient,” the head nurse lifted the curtain and called.

A boy about twenty years old lay on the gurney, hesitating and covering himself. His upper body was bare, and his lower body was covered with a bath towel.

Lu Qingshi paused, straightened up, eyes cold: “In a doctor’s eyes, there is no gender distinction, only patients and normal people.”

“I…” Yu Gui picked up the ice pack, prepared a belly full of curses wanting to throw it back, but when she saw Lu Qingshi’s eyes, she silently swallowed them back, and looked at the male patient’s expression, equally lifeless.
“You… you… you don’t come over… if you come over again… again I’ll call someone…” The male patient sat on the bed, covering his private parts, retreating backward.
Yu Gui couldn’t advance or retreat, her face turning red with embarrassment.
“Oh, my darling~ are you feeling better?” A man with a handbag under his elbow, dressed in a leather jacket and pants, flamboyantly walked in, with a strong perfume scent wafting over, causing Yu Gui to yawn and rub her nose hard.
“Family member?”
The man’s eyes lit up immediately upon seeing Lu Qingshi, moving closer: “What a beautiful doctor, yes, I am his family member, is there anything?”

Yu Gui quickly handed over the ice pack as if holding a hot potato.

“Who are you?” The man frowned, first asking, still touching the boy named Mike’s private part.
The girl stomped her foot, immediately unwilling: “Take your dirty hands off my boyfriend!”
“No, Peipei, Peipei, listen to me,” the boy beat his chest and stomped his feet.
“F*ck! He is your boyfriend, then who am I?” The man threw the ice pack, also unwilling.

Lu Qingshi hadn’t yet taken off the white coat, put both hands into her pockets, nodded to acknowledge the other, but showed no sign of going to rest, instead, she walked straight to the radiology department.
“Where is Wang Youshi’s CT scan taken this morning?”
The colleague in the radiology department handed her the films: “Here they are; I initially wanted to bring them to Doctor Lu, but I heard you were in surgery this afternoon, so I left them here.”
Lu Qingshi picked up the films and clipped them onto the viewing light, examining them closely, then took his angiography image to ponder over it.
The more she looked, the more something seemed off, her eyebrows furrowed, and her expression became somewhat unpleasant.
“What’s wrong, Doctor Lu?”
“Where is Wang Youshi now?”
“Not long after breakfast this morning, he had severe abdominal pain and was sent to the operating room,” he looked at the time: “He should be out by now.”
Lu Qingshi realized something was wrong, put down the films, and immediately ran out.

- Mitral stenosis: A narrowing of the valve between the two left heart chambers. The narrowed valve reduces or blocks blood flow into the heart’s main pumping chamber. The heart’s main pumping chamber is the lower left heart chamber, also called the left ventricle.
- Corpora cavernosa: One of two columns of spongy tissue that runs through the shaft (body) of the penis. The corpus cavernosum forms most of the penis and contains blood vessels that fill with blood to help make an erection.
- Perineum: The area between the anus and the vulva in females. In males, it is the area between the anus and the scrotum.
