I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 9

Returning to the rented apartment

Su Wenwen was lying on a chair when she was woken up by noise. Having just woken up, her mind was still fuzzy. It wasn’t until she saw the sky outside still thick with dark clouds that she quickly checked her phone for the time. It was actually 6:30 in the morning.

【Host, the mission is already complete.】

What, how was it completed?

【The Host slept on the villain’s lap for a long time. The villain had just put the Host on a chair and was stretching her legs.】

Su Wenwen looked around and saw the villain sitting further back, leaning against a chair and resting. She rubbed her cheeks. The lingering scent of perfume was still clearly noticeable, and her cheeks suddenly flushed hot. She quickly looked away.

The reward this time was very generous: a space backpack. All told, she now had one with a three-meter range. There was also a rare consumable, a Ten Perfect Great Nourishing Soup1. After consuming it, all attributes would recover by 60%, which was quite powerful and also a life-saving item.

Finally, there were four attribute points, which Su Wenwen added all to strength. With this, her strength was currently maxed out. Next, she would have to put points into endurance; otherwise, she wouldn’t last many rounds against zombies before dying of exhaustion.

“They still haven’t come out. Should we go?”

Su Wenwen rubbed the back of her head, stood up, and glanced towards the hospital. Although she felt it was a bit of a pity, since those people hadn’t come out after so long, they were most likely dead. Just as she was about to agree, a loud noise suddenly came from the hospital, waking the villain.

Black smoke shot into the sky, and a sound like thousands of soldiers and horses stampeding2 seemed to be converging in their direction.

Su Wenwen’s gaze sharpened, and she quickly got into the driver’s seat. “I’ll start the bus.”

She started the bus the way the man had taught her. The engine’s roar was drowned out by another explosion from the hospital. Before long, more than ten people came running towards the bus, and Su Wenwen quickly had someone open the door to let them in.

Then she turned the steering wheel, turning the bus around. However, she wasn’t driving fast, and the group of people behind the bus gradually got closer. Perhaps seeing a glimmer of hope for survival, each of them ran like a racing champion, achieving astonishing speed in their final sprint.

A man in a white lab coat was the first to board, followed by a group of young men and women. Several other men and women in hospital gowns ran behind them, barely managing to keep up with the bus.

“Drive faster!”

After boarding, one man, having lost his senses or perhaps overcome by fear, reached out to grab the steering wheel from Su Wenwen. It was her first time driving a bus and she was already a bit clumsy; there was no way she could react in time.

The man grabbed her wrist, and the steering wheel immediately swerved uncontrollably from side to side. The bus lurched violently. Because the door was wide open, a little girl was thrown towards the entrance like a ball. An old man cried out in alarm and, disregarding everything, lunged forward, grabbing her tightly.

Su Wenwen angrily shook the man off, wrenched the steering wheel, and barely managed to steady the bus. The man was thrown to the floor. After getting up, he still tried to grab the steering wheel, but the villain seized his wrist and, with a shoulder throw3, slammed him directly onto the floor, leaving him unable to get up.

Judo shoulder throw

Others rushed to the doorway to pull them in, but half of the old man’s body was dangling outside. Due to his aged muscles, he lacked the strength to grip the doorframe. Once the little girl was pulled safely onto the bus, he seemed to lose his grip and fell out, rolling a few times on the ground before lying still.

The girl cried out, “Grandpa!” watching helplessly as zombies surrounded the old man and began to bite him. The flowing blood drew all the zombies’ attention, which, as it happened, allowed the patients running behind to escape. The bus slowed slightly, and they too managed to get on board.

After the door was closed, the bus was filled with the girl’s wails.

“I want Grandpa…”

The girl cried until she was out of breath4. At her young age, her eyes revealed endless sorrow. Some people comforted her, while others directly landed a few punches on the man who had caused the incident.

Su Wenwen pressed her lips together and floored the accelerator. When she saw zombies wandering by the roadside, she ran them over directly, and her attribute points soared.

The bus passed several intersections. The girl’s loud wails turned into quiet sobs, and then she sat on a chair, silent, neither speaking nor making a fuss.

Another girl in a hospital gown, who looked to be only thirteen or fourteen, sat down beside the little girl, hugged her tightly, and said, “Cry if you want to. I lost my dad too.”

They learned from this girl that the three people who had gone into the hospital had all died; one of them was her father. The girl had cancer. She was bald, wore a hat, and her face was completely pale. Having left the hospital, without medication and chemotherapy, she probably wouldn’t live long.

“Stop hitting me! I have medicine, I can share it with you…” The man on the floor was beaten black and blue, his glasses knocked off. Behind him was a bulging backpack.

“F#cking hell, who needs it!”

The man, yelping from the beating, scrambled and crawled over to a group of people in white lab coats, begging for their help, but they all avoided him.

“Director, you went too far this time.”

His face turned livid as he began to scold.

“What are you talking about? Without me, you wouldn’t be chief surgeon! When medical accidents happened, I always sorted them out. And we survived today all thanks to me!”

“Her dad was a car thief. He stole my car and was later thrown in prison—he’s no good. If I hadn’t lured him to the kitchen, we’d all be dead today,” the Director said, pointing at the girl with cancer.

“Huh? Wasn’t he a car mechanic?” someone asked.

The Director snorted coldly. “Car mechanic? He was just a thief.”

The girl bit her lip, her voice tinged with a sob. “My dad’s not a thief! He did it for me! And he saved you all! How can you say that about my dad?”

“He saved you, not us,” the Director sneered, then rubbed his swollen cheek. “He stole my car, and I didn’t press charges. I even did my best to treat your illness. That was merciful enough.”

“But you’re quite lucky too. Now that it’s the apocalypse, the two hundred thousand-plus your dad owed the hospital doesn’t need to be repaid.”

Su Wenwen couldn’t listen anymore. Seeing there weren’t many zombies around, she immediately hit the brakes, opened the pneumatic door, and told the Director to get off the bus.

The Director stared wide-eyed. He wouldn’t get off; he couldn’t possibly get off. He tried to hide among the people in white lab coats. Perhaps those in white coats believed the rescue teams would arrive soon and the world would return to its former prosperity, and they still needed to rely on the Director as their backing5. So, they instead questioned Su Wenwen, claiming her actions were tantamount to murder.

Anyway, Su Wenwen’s home was nearby. She stood up, intending to get off the bus with the villain. But as she reached the door, she hesitated and glanced back at the two girls—one who had lost her grandfather, and one who had lost her father.

Even if they had other relatives, their chances of survival were likely slim.

In the apocalypse, everyone fends for themselves, and compassion was the biggest taboo.

But the little girl looked at Su Wenwen timidly, a hint of expectation in her eyes. She seemed to want to go with them but didn’t dare to ask, remaining so quiet and well-behaved.

Su Wenwen was very conflicted. She had already decided to live for herself in this life. In the apocalypse, taking a five or six-year-old child along would undoubtedly make her a burden6. Yet, looking at the girl’s innocent gaze, she found it hard to be cruel.

“If you’re getting off, then hurry up! What if you attract zombies by just standing there in the doorway?” The Director looked around. Perhaps because he was terrified, he thought he vaguely heard some sound approaching.

Luo Xi glanced coldly at the Director. She managed a branch company, had received rigorous training and education from a young age, and with her tall stature, she naturally exuded an intimidating presence. Merely by her standing silently in front of the Director, he felt as if he were being scrutinized by a superior. His behavior became guarded, and he didn’t dare say anything more.

Luo Xi walked over to the girls. “Are you willing to come with me?”

The little girl nodded softly. The other girl, however, shook her head.

She had cancer and had lost her family; she believed she would die sooner or later and no longer had any will to live. She patted the little girl’s head and said, “You must stick close to these two big sisters.”

“Big sister, aren’t you coming?”

“This big sister can’t walk much anymore. It’s more comfortable to stay on the bus.”

The little girl nodded, still a bit bewildered, and followed Su Wenwen and Luo Xi off the bus. The bus was handed over to someone else to drive. With a roar of its engine, the large vehicle soon disappeared from sight.

Su Wenwen didn’t linger and led them towards her place. She lived in one of two small, opposing apartment buildings, each five stories high. Because they were very old, electrical wires drooped along the sides of the buildings, crisscrossing untidily.

The area around the apartment building seemed deserted. Occasionally, a pool of blood could be seen on the road, and bloody handprints stained the walls. Combined with the terrible weather—the sun hadn’t appeared for a long time, and there was constant lightning and thunder—it felt as if they had stepped onto the set of The Ring7.

Su Wenwen lived on the top floor.

She chose the top floor because the rent was cheap, and the fifth floor had a spacious balcony for airing out quilts. The only downside was that climbing the stairs was a bit tiring. However, Su Wenwen had just gained twelve attribute points. After maxing out her endurance, she still had some left over, so she put them into stamina.

The effect of maxing out her endurance was quite noticeable. Previously, Su Wenwen would have had to rest for a bit and slow her pace upon reaching the third floor. Now, she could climb all five floors in one go without feeling tired.

She took out her key and opened the door.

However, just as she was about to enter, the landlord from the apartment across the hall suddenly opened their door. The landlords were a couple, and half of the units in this building belonged to them. They lived on the fifth floor themselves, likely to rent out the more expensive units to others.

“Aiyo, Wenwen, I thought something had happened to you! I didn’t expect you to come back. Have you seen any government rescue teams?”

The speaker was the landlady. Her eyes were somewhat small, and when she squinted slightly, she had a rather mean appearance. Su Wenwen didn’t like her much, and she especially disliked how the landlady’s husband always stared at people with lecherous eyes.

“No.”

After saying this, Su Wenwen glanced sideways, giving the villain a look. The villain understood and led the little girl into the apartment first. The male landlord stared at the villain’s retreating figure so intently it looked as if his eyes were about to pop out.

The landlady noticed his gaze, jabbed him sharply in the ribs with her elbow, and then said with a smile, “Who knows when the government rescue will arrive. If you don’t have enough food at your place, just let me know. My son is strong and healthy; he brought back a lot of food yesterday, enough for us to eat for a good while.”

Su Wenwen nodded perfunctorily. Before they could say more, she turned, went inside, and locked the newly installed security door. Looking through the peephole8, she saw them still standing at her doorway, exchanging glances that seemed to hint at some sort of scheming.

LP: It’s quite sad that humans will turn on each other even during an apocalypse. With how timid and cowardly I am, I’ll be one of the first to die lmao (´• ω •)
