Involution King Su
Because Su Wenwen had the system’s protection, her physical fitness was up to standard, and her agility went without saying. Therefore, Wang Kelin created a separate training plan for Su Wenwen. During the day, she trained with the team, and after dinner, she followed Wang Kelin to learn military physical boxing1, including grappling2, combat, Taekwondo, and so on.
For three whole nights, her training points only increased by +1. Luo Xi hadn’t come over either; it was unknown what she had been busy with recently.
Today was shooting practice.
Wang Kelin first explained it once, then demonstrated. With her ability, even shooting from a distance with a hand/gun, she could hit the bullseye one hundred percent of the time. Su Wenwen had never used a gun before and was a complete little white3 just like everyone else. The gun felt heavy and cold in her hand, and there was always a sense of it being uncontrollable.
Sure enough, when Su Wenwen shot, she basically missed the target completely. Even among the girls present, the one with the worst shooting at least hit the target.
Wang Kelin was right beside Su Wenwen, teaching her hand-in-hand, telling her to relax and not be nervous. There were two raised points on the handgun; connect the points into a straight line and aim at the bullseye to shoot.
Following the method Wang Kelin taught, although she no longer missed the target, she basically only hit the one-ring or two-ring area. Three rings were a struggle, and there were no four rings. She tried several times, and it was always like this.
Su Wenwen didn’t understand either. Others clearly made rapid progress after a few tries, yet she was stuck in place. Perhaps she was naturally suited for cold weapons. She didn’t dwell on it and directly explained the situation to Wang Kelin.
“I might not be suited for shooting training. In the future, when you all practice shooting, can I just practice my physical fitness?”
Wang Kelin knew Su Wenwen’s abilities. During these three nights, Su Wenwen’s combat skills had far exceeded her imagination. She smiled and patted her shoulder, “Alright, a foot has its strengths4. Just make sure you play to your strengths.”
Su Wenwen was doing obstacle course training alone in the heavy snow. However, with the system, passing the obstacles was no challenge at all, so she chose to turn off the system’s attribute bonuses.
The other team members stood motionless, shouldering their guns. The falling snow seemed to drape a white coat over them. Before long, someone couldn’t hold on anymore; their arms trembled, shaking the snowflakes to the ground.
Seeing this, Wang Kelin took the water canteen from the female team member’s waist and hung it on her gun. Her tone was as cold as the snowy day, “If the canteen falls to the ground within half an hour, you’re not allowed to eat lunch.”
She gritted her teeth and nodded. Her gaze shifted, and she saw that Su Wenwen’s running speed had slowed, but Su Wenwen still showed no sign of stopping to rest. Her heart was instantly filled with fighting spirit, as if she had taken some divine medicine, and her spirits were invigorated.
The snow in the sky seemed to be falling heavier and heavier, but it didn’t affect the training. They even felt that this kind of weather made the training more comfortable. The ground was soft, and when the cold wind blew, the heat from their bodies subsided a little, making it feel extremely refreshing.
At lunchtime, the female team members’ hands were so unsteady they couldn’t even hold chopsticks. They ate directly with their hands. The male team members were not much better off. It was unknown what training they had gone through, but their cheeks were flushed, their whole bodies were trembling, their teeth were chattering, and they couldn’t even chew their food.
But even so, their faces wore warm smiles, as if they could melt even the white snow outside.
In the evening, Wang Kelin gathered all the female team members, saying she wanted to select a team captain. Su Wenwen got twenty-three votes, and several other female team members received over ten, twenty, and thirty votes respectively.
“Aiya, what a pity the dormitory head wasn’t chosen.”
Su Wenwen’s roommate was quite regretful. She herself didn’t mind. When she worked in the era of peace, she was well aware that her leadership ability was relatively weak, and she wasn’t very suitable for giving orders to people.
The chosen female team member was quite tall. During training, she was also very considerate of others, was articulate, and had a clear way of thinking. She was indeed suitable to be a small team captain.
After the captain was chosen, Wang Kelin let everyone disperse and return to their dormitories to rest. Su Wenwen, however, stayed behind to continue sparring with Wang Kelin. Some people who walked away slowly turned their heads and saw Su Wenwen practicing her punches. They secretly gave Su Wenwen the nickname “Involution King Su5,” and this nickname, accompanied by admiring laughter, quickly spread on the way back to the female team members’ dormitories.
Su Wenwen didn’t know about this. She just wanted to train for as long as she could before nine o’clock. Wang Kelin also showed no mercy, throwing quick punches at Su Wenwen, all aimed at vital spots.
Su Wenwen managed to nimbly dodge every time, then learned from Wang Kelin’s boxing style and counterattacked.
Wang Kelin didn’t dare to be careless. Every time she received Su Wenwen’s fist, her whole body tensed up, using her body’s muscles to buffer the pain from the impact. Tonight, after only a few moves, she waved her hands, “That’s all for tonight. Let me rest for a night. I still have to lead the team members in boxing practice tomorrow morning.”
Su Wenwen nodded.
“But you are truly amazing. The speed at which you learn boxing is no slower than Luo Xi’s,” Wang Kelin remarked with emotion.
“Then do I count as having extraordinary natural gifts6?”
“Of course you do. It’s just that your marksmanship is a bit poor.”
Su Wenwen smiled. If it weren’t for the system, it wouldn’t just be her marksmanship that was terrible. Every time she encountered a situation like this, she couldn’t help but feel that everything that had happened recently was like a dream: rebirth, the system, her lover, her friends.
She was simply a winner in life.
It was because this life was going so well that Su Wenwen felt a sense of fear, afraid that one wrong step would mean no more chances to start over. So, she had to do her utmost to improve her strength and protect everything she had gained so painstakingly.
She looked up at the sky. The bleak, cold snow had already piled up into a thick layer on the ground, covering all traces and years, making it impossible to distinguish what day or year it was. “I don’t even remember what month and day it is today.”
“Wait, let me check…” Wang Kelin couldn’t remember either. She fumbled with her phone, tapping here and there, then said, “Today is November 3rd. Normally, it’s impossible for it to snow here at this time of year.”
Hearing this, Su Wenwen suddenly thought of something and said to Wang Kelin, “Can I ask you for a favor? Help me find a professional camera.”
“Ah, what do you want that thing for?” Wang Kelin scratched her head. “Forget it, I’ll do my best to look for one, but don’t get your hopes up too high.”
Su Wenwen understood. In the apocalypse, food was the priority. A camera was neither a weapon nor edible, couldn’t be exchanged for supplies, and was also bulky. It was unlikely anyone would carry one around while running from place to place.
The next day’s training was indoors. Everyone sat on the floor in a circle. The heating was on inside, and compared to the training of the past two days, today was overly comfortable, making it feel unreal, like the calm before a storm, where the next moment could make you cry for your dad and mom7 at any time.
Wang Kelin distributed plastic daggers to everyone. After speaking for a while about the techniques for sparring with daggers, she called Su Wenwen’s name for a sparring demonstration.
The female team members seemed quite excited. Before the fight even started, their eyes were sparkling and glued to Su Wenwen, until someone shouted, “Go, Involution King Su!”
Su Wenwen was slightly stunned, then pursed her lips and smiled at the female team member who had shouted. It was like a beautiful red flower blooming after the winter snow, fresh and lovely, without any seduction, yet it still made one’s heart flutter, causing the female team member’s cheeks to turn inexplicably red.
Wang Kelin glanced over and said, “Involution King Su, don’t be dazed. You make the first move, I’ll receive it.”
Su Wenwen nodded. The dagger in her hand was flicked by her, made a splendid turn in mid-air, and was then held in a reverse grip. She then suddenly launched an assault on Wang Kelin. Her speed was extremely fast, and the angle of her strike was very tricky.
Wang Kelin was startled, not expecting Su Wenwen to be so proficient with a dagger. She was an instructor, after all, and couldn’t afford to be careless and lose. She quickly took a step back, originally intending to adjust her posture and prepare her defense, but unexpectedly, Su Wenwen gave her no chance. Her nimble figure turned, sticking close to Wang Kelin and swinging the dagger continuously.
Wang Kelin barely dodged a few attacks, but because her bulky training uniform made her reactions half a beat slower than before, she failed to dodge the final strike, causing the red paint on the plastic dagger to graze her arm.
Wang Kelin was defeated.
Su Wenwen smiled, “Thank you for going easy on me, Instructor.”
Wang Kelin glanced at the spot stained by the paint. Her clothes had been torn open. As a training uniform, the quality was absolutely excellent; it was impossible for it to be cut open by a plastic dagger. The only explanation was that Su Wenwen’s strike speed just now had reached an astonishing figure, making the soft plastic seem incomparably sharp.
“I didn’t go easy on you. My skills were inferior. But…” Wang Kelin’s fighting spirit was also ignited by Su Wenwen today, “From today on, I will train together with everyone.”
Su Wenwen said, “Then I’ll be your opponent.”
Wang Kelin nodded, “Of course.”
The team members were divided into pairs for confrontations. Su Wenwen and Wang Kelin sparred for the entire day, with the wins and losses basically even. Her training points also unexpectedly increased by two.
She discovered that after her proficiency in cold weapons increased, not only did her attack power improve, but even her control over the dagger became more effortless.
“Involution King Su, you’re too amazing. Even the instructor can’t get an advantage over you.”
At dinner, everyone discussed the day’s training while eating. The sparring between Su Wenwen and Wang Kelin was both aesthetically pleasing and thrilling, so the topic of discussion was all centered around Su Wenwen.
Su Wenwen was thin-skinned and felt a little embarrassed listening to it. She quickly shoveled a few mouthfuls of rice and ran outside. The snowflakes landed on her cheeks, freezing her flushed face a little paler.
Just as she reached the corner, her wrist was suddenly grabbed, and she was pulled straight into a dark corner under a wall. Su Wenwen didn’t resist, leaning softly against the figure in the moonlight, smelling that familiar cold fragrance.
“Wenwen is so amazing, so many people like you.”
Being passive-aggressive8 again.
Su Wenwen felt she now understood Luo Xi. She had one face in front of others, and another face in front of her. No wonder Wang Kelin always complained that Luo Xi was a wolf. “So you were afraid I’d run off with someone, and that’s why you had Wang Kelin give me special treatment?”
Luo Xi’s breath hitched, “No… I was just afraid you’d get hurt. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have acted on my own.”
“Don’t apologize, I’m not angry. Your special favoritism towards me, I couldn’t be happier.” Su Wenwen wrapped her arms around Luo Xi’s slender waist, feeling that she seemed to have gotten a little thinner again.
