Meeting the Parents
These past few days, with nothing to do, and with Luo Xi leaving early and returning late because of Father Luo’s death, Su Wenwen would always wake up when the sun was three bamboo poles high1, then wash up and cook a meal for herself.
Eating alone, she wasn’t particularly fussy. If there were leftovers from the previous night, Su Wenwen would have them for lunch the next day. Although it was overnight food2, in the apocalypse, it was still incomparably precious.
After she had eaten her fill, Su Wenwen originally planned to go out for a walk, but her phone suddenly received a message telling her to go to the office building, saying that Ji Qingshuang wanted to see her.
Su Wenwen blinked, reading the text message several times. After confirming it was from Lin Yu, she grew nervous and ran back to her room. She rummaged through her spatial backpack[ until it was a mess, finally finding a relatively presentable and practical short, beige windbreaker. She paired it with a slim-fit women’s shirt, black trousers, and a pair of little white shoes3.
Next, she put up her messy hair. If there had been any cosmetics in her spatial backpack, Su Wenwen estimated she would have spent another half an hour on makeup. However, she hadn’t worn any makeup for several months and her skills were rusty; even if she had cosmetics, she wouldn’t have dared to use them.
Su Wenwen checked herself in the mirror and, confirming that nothing was out of place, headed out the door. From a distance, she saw Lin Yu waiting for her with the car parked to the side. Su Wenwen ran over and said, a little embarrassed, “Sorry to have kept you waiting.”
Lin Yu shook his head, turned to open the rear car door for Su Wenwen, and said, “You don’t need to be nervous. The Commander-in-Chief is very easy to get along with.”
Su Wenwen nodded, but she was still nervous deep down. Does she know about my relationship with Luo Xi? Will she oppose it? Will she like me? She was somewhat absent-minded the entire way, not even realizing when they had arrived at the office building. She just muddle-headedly followed Lin Yu upstairs.
It was her first time seeing Ji Qingshuang in person. She had gentle, affectionate eyes, a gaze as soft as water, and a warm, amiable smile on her face. Just one look was enough to give anyone a favorable impression, making them feel that Ji Qingshuang was a very easy person to get along with.
Things were just as Su Wenwen had thought. Ji Qingshuang already knew about her relationship with Luo Xi but didn’t offer any opinion on it. Instead, she enthusiastically pulled Su Wenwen by the hand to sit on the sofa to chat about family routines4. One moment she would ask Su Wenwen’s age, the next she would praise her, and then she would start to list Luo Xi’s faults. She basically monopolized the conversation, which saved Su Wenwen from the awkwardness of having to search for topics.
After Lin Yu brought two glasses of water for them and withdrew, Su Wenwen sat quietly beside Ji Qingshuang, listening. She would occasionally chime in with a few words of agreement and also took the opportunity to talk about her first meeting with Luo Xi.
She didn’t hide her past with Helian Yun, mentioning it in an understated tone5. After hearing this, Ji Qingshuang showed no intention of probing further. Instead, she said, “No wonder that child puts the thermos on her bedside table and doesn’t let anyone else touch it.”
“It seems she really likes you.”
Hearing this, Su Wenwen could just imagine the serious look on Luo Xi’s face as she warned others. It must have been quite cute. She couldn’t help but smile faintly and ask, “Commander-in-Chief, could you tell me a little more about Luo Xi?”
“Ai, it’s shameful to say, but Luo Xi has been mature and steady since she was a child. Unlike other children, she never acted spoiled or caused trouble, and I rarely ever saw her lose her temper. Even I, her mother, don’t know how to describe her.” Ji Qingshuang recalled Luo Xi’s suppressed voice on the phone the previous night and couldn’t help but smile as she looked at Su Wenwen. “However, after meeting you, Luo Xi has already lost her temper with me several times.”
Hearing this, Su Wenwen’s body stiffened slightly. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say, nor did she understand if there was a hidden meaning in those words. Is she accusing me of making Luo Xi a worse person?
Seeing her uneasy gaze, Ji Qingshuang knew she had misunderstood and said with a laugh, “I didn’t mean anything by it. I just think it’s quite nice that Luo Xi can lose her temper at me like a child.”
“Actually, when I saw that you had registered as a Scavenger6, I was a little worried, so I sent Lin Yu to protect you. I didn’t expect you to be ambushed. I will give you a proper account of this matter…”
Before Ji Qingshuang could finish, Su Wenwen quickly shook her head. “There’s no need. I’m fine.”
“That won’t do. If it happens once, it will happen again.” Ji Qingshuang frowned. Most people in this situation would definitely want protection, so she couldn’t quite understand Su Wenwen’s way of thinking.
Su Wenwen said with a smile, “It’s alright, I’m not afraid. I’ll just wait for them to come for me. However, I’ll still have to trouble the Commander-in-Chief about one thing: please don’t let too many people know about my ability.”
Ji Qingshuang was surprised. Seeing the fearlessness in Su Wenwen’s eyes, she understood a little. In truth, even if Old Master Luo disliked Su Wenwen, he wouldn’t go so far as to send someone to kill her. The fundamental reason the person behind the scenes had ambushed Su Wenwen was to target Luo Xi. This made it even less likely that the culprit was Old Master Luo; after all, Luo Xi was his biological granddaughter. Su Wenwen understood this, which meant she wanted to follow the vine to find the melon7.
The only thing Ji Qingshuang couldn’t figure out was how Su Wenwen seemed to understand everyone in the Luo family, including Ji Qingshuang herself.
Perhaps Luo Xi told her. Thinking this, Ji Qingshuang didn’t dwell on it further. Acting first and reporting later8, she brought Su Wenwen home for dinner. She cooked personally, with Su Wenwen helping out on the side, appearing a little reserved. However, after Ji Qingshuang smoothed things over a few times, Su Wenwen gradually relaxed and began to treat Ji Qingshuang like any other elder, chatting and laughing. It was quite lively.
By the time Luo Xi rushed over, the meal was just ready. She silently sat down next to Su Wenwen. Su Wenwen only glanced back at her once before continuing to make small talk with Ji Qingshuang.
The conversation drifted to Luo Xi’s picky eating habits. Ji Qingshuang said she didn’t eat cilantro or scallions, wouldn’t eat red-braised9 dishes or meat, and was even selective about the taste of her vegetables. She was particularly difficult to raise. Fortunately, the Luo family had a dedicated chef back then; otherwise, if Luo Xi had been born into an ordinary family, she probably would have been malnourished. How could she have grown up to be so beautiful?
After listening, Su Wenwen subconsciously replied, “That’s not true. Luo Xi isn’t a picky eater; she’s quite easy to feed.”
Ji Qingshuang glanced at Luo Xi, who remained silent and kept her head down eating, and gave a helpless smile. She said meaningfully, “Perhaps the apocalypse changed her tastes!”
Su Wenwen nodded. “That’s true. Food is scarce in the apocalypse now, so there’s simply no room to be picky. Actually, I really admire the Commander-in-Chief for being able to establish a safe haven for so many people during the apocalypse.”
Ji Qingshuang’s expression went slack for a moment, but she quickly returned to her usual gentle demeanor. “It wasn’t my achievement alone. But never mind, let’s not talk about this. Let’s eat quickly, or the food will get cold.”
Su Wenwen was quite perceptive. Ji Qingshuang’s momentary slack-jawed expression seemed to indicate she wanted to say something but held back. Su Wenwen instinctively sensed that the topic might be too heavy—after all, so many people had died in the apocalypse, especially on the front lines, an inestimable number. So, she went along with what Ji Qingshuang said, nodding as she ate and steering the conversation back to Luo Xi.
Ji Qingshuang put on a sad expression and said to Su Wenwen, “It’s quite lonely for me living at home by myself. If you have time, you must come and visit this lonely old woman.”
Su Wenwen nodded with a smile. She didn’t think Ji Qingshuang was joking. She had noticed when she first came in that although the furnishings in the house were all new, there was nothing that seemed personally connected to Ji Qingshuang—no photos, no dust, and no smell of cooking oil10 in the kitchen. Because she was alone, Ji Qingshuang probably didn’t actually live here.
At this thought, Su Wenwen nudged Luo Xi’s calf with her foot. Only then did Luo Xi turn her head and nod along, albeit a little awkwardly.
The meal was a happy and harmonious one. Afterwards, Su Wenwen helped with the dishes, and once everything was clean, she and Luo Xi left. After the two of them were gone, the smile on Ji Qingshuang’s face faded considerably. She dialed Lin Yu’s number. When the call connected, she said coldly, “Take care of that person.”
That person, of course, was the water-ability user who had ambushed Su Wenwen. Since Su Wenwen didn’t want too many people to know about her ability, and the water-ability user belonged to someone else, eliminating them was naturally the best method. Although it was cruel, since the other party had already stood well in the line11, they had to be prepared for sacrifice.
After hanging up, Ji Qingshuang dialed another number and instructed the person on the other end to be specially assigned as Su Wenwen’s bodyguard. A car and some necessary equipment would be provided, and the pay was quite generous. The other party agreed immediately.
So, early the next morning, Su Wenwen heard a knock on her front door. Her sweet dream disturbed, she frowned in slight annoyance, put on her slippers, and went to the living room to open the door. There, she saw Chen Zixuan, holding two servings of breakfast with a fawning smile on her face.
“Hasn’t Luo Xi gotten up yet?”
“She had something to do, so she left early this morning.”
Chen Zixuan quickly squeezed into the house, placed the breakfast on the table, and said, “That’s perfect. I’ll have the other serving of breakfast, then.”
“Did you come over this early just to deliver food?”
Chen Zixuan gave a mysterious smile and told Su Wenwen about the task Ji Qingshuang had given her. “That’s right. From now on, I’m your personal bodyguard. I’ll be living in the villa next door to you, all three meals a day are free, and I even get a hundred crystal cores every month.”
For Ji Qingshuang to make such arrangements showed how much importance she placed on Su Wenwen. Naturally, she couldn’t refuse such a kind gesture. She sent a thank-you text to Ji Qingshuang, then said to Chen Zixuan, “Since you’re my bodyguard, there are some things I need to tell you in advance. The reason I was ambushed is that the person behind it is definitely targeting Luo Xi, which means they’re targeting the Commander-in-Chief. By becoming my bodyguard, you’ve essentially boarded the Commander-in-Chief’s ship.”
Upon hearing this, Chen Zixuan’s face fell. “I knew a pie wouldn’t just fall from the sky12! It turns out it was a trap. Is it too late for me to back out now?”
“What do you think?” Su Wenwen smiled. In truth, from the moment Chen Zixuan had asked to team up, she had already boarded Luo Xi’s pirate ship13. Getting off wouldn’t be so simple.
“Forget it. Since I’m already here, I’ll make peace with it14. Nowhere is safe in the apocalypse anyway. I might as well take a gamble with you all. Besides, I quite like you… all of you.”
“You don’t need to pat a horse’s butt15.” Su Wenwen opened a breakfast container. “After we eat, you and I will go stock up on some supplies. It’s better to be prepared16.”
