Special Evolved Zombie
This mission also required protecting the space ability user, because all the supplies obtained needed to be stored in their space, and once the ability user died, the supplies in the space could not be retrieved.
Aside from Su Wenwen, Lin Yu knew the abilities of everyone in the team and specifically instructed Chen Zixuan to be responsible for protecting the space ability user. Hearing this, Chen Zixuan pouted her lips, seeming quite reluctant, but she had no reason to refuse and could only nod in agreement.
Afterward, Lin Yu said to Su Wenwen again, “Once we’re in the village, you follow right behind me. Don’t run around randomly.”
Su Wenwen pondered the meaning of these words; perhaps he was afraid she would drag the team down, or perhaps he was protecting her, but she still had to carefully observe the others. After all, the Adjutant’s phrase “the spy sent by the Old Master” made it necessary for her to be extra vigilant.
The convoy of vehicles arrived at the village entrance and encountered a group of zombies1, which were blasted until they were torn into four divisions and five cracks2 by the armored vehicle’s cannon fire. The sound attracted more zombies to rush out from the village. The sound of gunfire outside the vehicle was rising here and falling there3, yet Lin Yu remained seated in the front passenger seat, completely motionless.
Without his command, the other ability users also did not move. However, Su Wenwen saw someone being pounced on and torn at; the dripping fresh blood and agonizing screams made her cerebral nerves jolt, as if she could see the scene of herself being torn apart in her previous life.
She didn’t know if Lin Yu was friend or foe, but the guards outside were all people under Ji Qingshuang. They couldn’t be sacrificed in vain like this. She stood up, and just as she was about to get out of the vehicle, she was stopped by Lin Yu.
“Without my command, you are not permitted to act on your own.”
“Why should I listen to you?”
“If you don’t obey commands, I can have you removed from the clean-up team4. In the future, you can forget about participating in any of the base’s missions.”
Su Wenwen pressed her lips together, staring deadly at Lin Yu’s pair of inhuman eyes. The atmosphere inside the vehicle instantly changed from tense to oppressive. No one else dared to say a word.
Chen Zixuan pulled Su Wenwen’s hand, signaling for her to sit down.
And just in the brief moment of their dispute, more zombies swarmed out from the village, densely packed, filling the wide road ahead. Only at this moment did Lin Yu pick up the walkie-talkie and order the people outside to retreat back into the vehicles.
Afterward, the large machine guns on the armored vehicles continued to strafe, sending the front row of zombies with men toppling and horses turning over5. Even with broken bones, they had to rely on their bodies to wriggle over, only stopping their movements when armor-piercing rounds went through their heads.
But the zombies still held the upper hand, breaking through the rain of bullets and leaping onto the roof of the armored vehicle. Su Wenwen only felt the vehicle’s body shake, and then she saw a zombie hanging upside down from the roof in a strange posture. It pressed a chapped6 face against the window, its sinister red pupils staring at the living people inside the vehicle, and opened its mouth to gnaw on the armored vehicle, attempting to break in.
There were even stupider zombies that pressed their mouths against the muzzles of the machine guns and had their skulls penetrated by bullets. Before long, the armored vehicle was surrounded by layers upon layers of zombies. Su Wenwen nervously reached for the military knife at her waist.
If she rushed out at this moment, she most likely wouldn’t be able to retreat with her whole body intact. She glanced at Lin Yu, not knowing what this man was trying to do, to still be so calm, holding back and not speaking.
But the others in the vehicle clearly couldn’t hold on any longer. The bullets in the armored vehicle were all used up, and there was still a continuous stream of zombies rushing out from the intersection ahead. Worst of all, cracks appeared on the vehicle’s glass. Cold sweat trickled down each of their faces as they asked Lin Yu what to do next.
Seeing that Lin Yu wasn’t speaking, Chen Zixuan felt that her life would soon be over. She immediately pointed her blade at him and asked, “Did you deliberately bring us here to die?”
Hearing this, Su Wenwen was greatly alarmed.
Could it be that in order to kill her, he would not hesitate to sacrifice the lives of over a hundred people? Was she that valuable?
Just as the few of them were in a standoff, several loud bangs came from the distance. Before Su Wenwen could react to what this sound was, she first felt a violent shockwave. The heavy armored vehicle was overturned, and the layers of zombies were tossed into the sky like feathers.
The people in the vehicle cried out “Aiyo,” not knowing what they had hit, each of them wailing in pain. Su Wenwen was also hit in the back by a sharp object. She let out a muffled grunt, enduring it without making a sound.
Looking up, the scene inside the vehicle was chaotic. The armored vehicle was overturned on its side, and on her character attribute panel, her health bar had decreased by four hundred drops of blood and was still continuously dropping. She reached a hand to her back and felt a patch of warm stickiness.
【Host, you were just sneak-attacked, but the wound created is not large and will not affect your movement. The attacker is in the ten o’clock direction.】
Hearing this, Su Wenwen looked over without changing her expression. The attacker was another man, a water-system ability user, who looked quite scholarly. She had thought it was Lin Yu, but unexpectedly it wasn’t. Then what was Lin Yu’s objective?
Chen Zixuan was a bit slow on the uptake7. After the shaking stopped, she looked out through the shattered window. The originally dense swarm of zombies had all become dismembered limbs that were hard to piece together. Only a few tenacious zombies were still stubbornly running towards the armored vehicle. The flat cement road was also gone, now full of pits and craters, utterly ruined.
“Was that sound just now a missile?” Chen Zixuan asked.
Lin Yu glanced at the bloodstain on Su Wenwen’s back, undid the seatbelt at his waist, and stepped over the obstacles to stand up, saying, “Yes, the only missiles the base has. We had to be cautious.”
Chen Zixuan’s face was deathly pale. She held back from cursing, “I… why wasn’t this mentioned beforehand? Are we all bait?”
Lin Yu gave a cold laugh, “So what if it was mentioned beforehand? You saw how many zombies were in the village. Relying just on us, how many people do you think would have to die to bring the supplies back?”
“This decision can reduce casualties to a minimum. If you are dissatisfied, you can think of a better idea for me.”
Chen Zixuan was still a bit unconvinced. She was pulled back by Su Wenwen and didn’t continue to argue with Lin Yu. Besides, now was not the time for arguing; there were still many zombies with the ability to move outside.
Lin Yu used the walkie-talkie to ask about the situation in the other armored vehicles. After confirming that everyone was fine, he gave the order to clear out the surrounding zombies. However, he did not let Su Wenwen participate in the action of clearing zombies, the reason being that she had a wound on her back, and the fresh blood would make the zombies even more frenzied. He had her stay in the vehicle to treat her wound.
The feeling of looking at a pile of attribute points outside the vehicle but being unable to take them made Su Wenwen feel quite frustrated. If it weren’t for the fact that the road back to the base was unsafe, she estimated that Lin Yu would have been eager to drive her, this burden, away right now.
After the zombies were cleared out, Lin Yu left a portion of the people to collect crystal cores, while the rest followed him into the village on foot.
This village had the beautiful name of a land of fish and water8. The village was built by the sea, with intersecting river channels visible everywhere. The closer to the sea, the wider the river channels. There were also many small pleasure boats moored by the banks. The houses were scattered all around, and trees shaded the sky, leading all the way to the beach by the sea. The scenery was extremely beautiful.
To say this was a village, it would actually be more appropriate to describe it as a tourist area. The local villagers were extremely wealthy, and the house types they built were mostly villas.
Therefore, the supplies here were quite abundant. Lin Yu led people to scrape clean the food and bedding from the shops, as well as clothing stores and shoe stores. Daily necessities and other such things were on the scavenging list. Occasionally, they would encounter lone zombies, all of which were killed by Chen Zixuan with a single slash. Su Wenwen had absolutely no opportunity to act.
She suddenly missed Luo Xi.
When Luo Xi was around, it was always Su Wenwen who was responsible for delivering the final blow to kill zombies. Those attribute points shot up incredibly fast; it was as satisfying as could be. They had only been separated for half a day, yet the longing in her heart was like the surging waters of a great river, once it starts, it cannot be stopped.
When the supplies were all collected and everyone was heading back to the base, they discovered another zombie. However, that zombie was not quite the same as other zombies. Its whole body was bare and slick, its skin as smooth as a baby’s, and it had no hair on its body. It was about one meter tall, standing by the riverbank with its back to the group. At first glance, one might think it was a survivor. But when it turned its head, a feeling of hair and bones standing on end in horror9 arose in everyone.
Its face looked like a lump of flesh that had been kneaded together, like a deformed newborn fetus. It had no eyes or nose, but it had two holes that could smell scents. Its mouth was split to near its ears, as if it had specially evolved a snake-like jaw to facilitate eating, allowing it to open its mouth extremely wide, and inside the mouth was full of rows upon rows of sharp teeth.
【Evolved-type zombie, its strength surpasses that of an ability-type zombie. Host needs to be careful.】
Su Wenwen raised her spirits by twelve-thousand percent10. The military knife in her hand was already poised to strike. The corner of her eye glimpsed Chen Zixuan’s figure, and she quickly grabbed her arm, using her eyes to signal Chen Zixuan not to act rashly without careful consideration.
And the zombie, not far in front of them, was raising its head, using its nostrils to sniff the surrounding scents.
Lin Yu’s handgun was already aimed at the zombie’s head. The moment the bullet left the chamber, it hit the zombie between the eyebrows. The zombie’s head just tilted to the side, and the bullet fell off. The skin between its eyebrows remained smooth, without even a single bullet mark left behind.
Lin Yu’s eyes narrowed. He raised his hand to signal Chen Zixuan to retreat first with the space ability user. Before Chen Zixuan could respond, he suddenly felt a cold, fishy-smelling wind brush past his cheek. Instinct made him swiftly turn his body and tilt his head.
The whitish zombie flew past his eyes. Following the figure with his gaze, he saw the zombie’s mouth split open to a considerably large arc. In one bite, it enveloped a teammate’s head. The sharp teeth sliced through the neck, and with a gentle closing motion, it bit off the entire head.
The KACHA sound of chewing felt like eating potato chips, scaring the crowd into a hurried retreat.
Bullets piled up, hitting the zombie’s body but causing no pain or itch. Soon, the ammunition ran low, while the zombie, covered in blood, stood up straight, raising its head to sniff the surrounding scents with its nostrils. Seeing this, Lin Yu shouted, “Chen Zixuan, run first with the space ability user and Su Wenwen.”
Hearing Lin Yu’s words, Su Wenwen was now certain that his purpose was to protect her. Since he was a friend and not an enemy, Su Wenwen had no reason to abandon him, and this wasn’t her personality either.
“Chen Zixuan, you go first.”
“No way, Luo Xi told me to look after you.”
Chen Zixuan frantically pulled at Su Wenwen. At this moment, Lin Yu dodged the zombie’s sneak attack with extreme speed, but the scream of another person was heard. Then, the zombie flew towards them again.
Su Wenwen had no time to think. She turned and tackled the space ability user and Chen Zixuan to the ground. That mouth full of sharp teeth happened to float past the back of Su Wenwen’s neck, and she was only licked by a long, sticky tongue, which was so disgusting it made the hairs on her body stand up.
