Mission Outside
For the past two days, Luo Xi had been staying at home to nurse her injuries. Su Wenwen even fed her during meals. In truth, she knew that Luo Xi’s right shoulder was mostly healed, but being able to be depended on wholeheartedly by the person she liked, Su Wenwen couldn’t have been happier, so naturally, she wouldn’t expose Luo Xi’s slightly clumsy scheme.
“How is the investigation into the butler’s matter going?”
Luo Xi paused, her eyes lowered as she said, “There are no leads for the time being. In any case, we’ll be staying here for a while, so there’s no rush to investigate.”
“Mm, then you should focus on healing your injury first.”
After so many years, the evidence was long gone. Su Wenwen felt that if Luo Xi were to investigate, she probably wouldn’t find anything. Although she wanted to help, it was better not to cause trouble for Luo Xi right now. Luo Xi was so smart; she would eventually find a breakthrough.
When it was time for lunch, Luo Xi still bonelessly leaned against Su Wenwen, looking just like a little good-for-nothing waiting to be fed. Su Wenwen had the least resistance to a beauty’s coquettishness, so naturally, she complied with all of it.
Every time Luo Xi saw Su Wenwen compromise, the blackening value would decrease again and again. Tallying it up over these two days, it had dropped by a full twenty-four points. At this rate, in another year or so, she probably wouldn’t have to worry about the possibility of Luo Xi blackening.
However, the weather had a chance of changing in these two days. It was no longer as hot as the previous few days, reaching the point where one had to wear long sleeves when going out in the early morning and at night. Many survivors had not yet had time to prepare cotton-padded clothes. Left with no choice, they could only put on two short-sleeved shirts to make do, waiting for the base to dispatch missions so the ability users could go out and collect winter clothing.
Su Wenwen actually wanted to go out on a mission too, because the expenditure of crystal cores was much greater than she had imagined. For three meals a day, a single meal would cost two to three crystal cores. If it weren’t for the food in her spatial backpack, her one hundred-plus crystal cores wouldn’t have lasted more than a few days.
Su Wenwen didn’t plan to tell Luo Xi about this situation; she didn’t want her to worry. She only told Luo Xi that she wanted to go out to train. Luo Xi knew that Su Wenwen had to rely on killing zombies to enhance her abilities, so this excuse was not easily doubted.
“Wait for me to get through this busy period, and I’ll go out with you.”
“That would be so much trouble. We’d be more efficient if we acted separately. You know how capable I am; I’ll be fine.”
Seeing that Luo Xi refused to yield, she knew that Luo Xi had little resistance to her acting spoiled. Although she was two years older than the other party, bowing low and acting small1 for the person one likes was also a kind of sentiment. Su Wenwen took Luo Xi’s arm and shook it, puffing out her cheeks, feigning a look of making a solemn vow2, much like a peacock spreading its tail feathers, brandishing its power and showing off its might3 to display its ability.
Luo Xi’s gaze roamed over Su Wenwen’s face, finally stopping on her red lips. Unable to resist, she gave her a light kiss, then said, “Alright, but you have to remember, I’ll be waiting for you to come back at the base.”
Su Wenwen understood; she had to put herself first in all matters.
In the following two days, the weather grew colder and colder. As expected, the base dispatched a mission for ability users to go out and collect winter clothes. As an ordinary person, Su Wenwen did not receive the mission. She planned to take the initiative and request to go on the mission.
Taking a long-sleeved jacket from her spatial backpack and putting it on, she hurried to the registration office. That young man was still guarding the front desk all alone. The young man recognized Su Wenwen the moment he saw her. After all, it was still very rare for an ordinary person to register as an Annihilator, let alone a beautiful woman.
Su Wenwen asked the young man if she could voluntarily join this mission. The young man said, “You can, but are you sure?”
Su Wenwen nodded. The young man sighed, registering Su Wenwen with what seemed like a bit of regret, then said, “I’ve already registered your information. When it’s time for the mission to depart, your phone will receive a message.”
“Many thanks.”
Su Wenwen walked home, satisfied. She had been quite afraid of having to stay in the base all the time. If she couldn’t kill zombies, she couldn’t improve her strength. Fortunately, the base management was quite humane and wouldn’t reject ordinary people who volunteered to join a team.
As she walked, Su Wenwen sensed that something was not right. It seemed a gaze was constantly staring at her. She turned her head to look; there were only a few people walking on the street. Although she didn’t find anyone suspicious, she trusted her intuition and simply pretended that nothing was wrong.
Opening her five senses, Su Wenwen heard the footsteps of one person constantly maintaining a distance from her that was neither too far nor too close. She was quite puzzled, not knowing who had sent someone to follow her.
After returning home, Su Wenwen went directly into her room and drew the curtains, leaving only a small gap for her to observe the situation outside. The villa was surrounded by vegetation, and the person following her was hiding by a tree, using binoculars to observe in this direction. Perhaps because they couldn’t find anything, the person left not long after.
Su Wenwen quickly and nimbly jumped down from the window and quietly followed behind the man. The man walked with seven turns and eight bends4, and he also seemed to sense something. The moment the man turned his head, Su Wenwen leaped onto a treetop and was not seen by him.
She followed the man all the way to a remote area on the periphery. The houses around were very desolate, with no signs of having been cleaned. Wild grass spread, growing wantonly. She was able to use the tall grass to hide.
Su Wenwen saw the man meet up with the Adjutant, reporting with their heads close together about what Su Wenwen had done today. The Adjutant was clearly very surprised that Su Wenwen would voluntarily apply to follow the team on an external mission. After dismissing the man, the Adjutant did not leave immediately but instead started smoking a cigarette.
Su Wenwen knew the Adjutant was quite formidable, so she didn’t dare to move recklessly for a moment and just lay prone in the grass, waiting for the Adjutant to leave first. But not only did the Adjutant not leave, he instead glanced toward the grass and said, “Come out. I saw you.”
Su Wenwen had no choice but to walk over awkwardly.
Seeing her, the Adjutant just calmly pointed at the crushed grass and said, “Next time you’re tailing someone, be careful not to leave traces.”
For a moment, Su Wenwen didn’t know what the Adjutant was trying to do. If he wanted to have someone follow her, why didn’t the Adjutant come personally, which would be better than sending a clumsy amateur? She asked doubtfully, “Why did you send someone to follow me?”
“It wasn’t me who sent someone to follow you; it was the Old Master who sent someone to investigate you.” The Adjutant took a drag, finishing the cigarette between his fingers in one go. He exhaled a swirling cloud of smoke that obscured the emotion in his eyes. “Your affairs have already reached the Old Master’s ears. For the next few days, I advise you to stay obediently in the base and not run around everywhere.”
The Adjutant’s meaning was that Old Master Luo was going to send people to deal with her. But wasn’t the Adjutant one of Old Master Luo’s men? Why would he go out of his way to come and remind her?
“It’s up to you whether you listen or not. You’d best take care of yourself!” The Adjutant dropped the cigarette butt, stamped it out with his foot, and then walked away without looking back.
Su Wenwen returned home with an unsettled heart.
Old Master Luo was Luo Xi’s relative, after all. She couldn’t bring herself to speak about the matter of him wanting to deal with her. She could only take it one step at a time. In any case, it was absolutely impossible to make her leave Luo Xi.
After giving herself a round of psychological construction5, Su Wenwen saw that it was getting late, so she went to the kitchen to prepare dinner as if nothing had happened. By the time Luo Xi returned, there was no longer any sign of anything wrong with Su Wenwen’s mood.
The two of them shared some lingering tenderness for a few days, and then Su Wenwen received the message to depart. She left food and clothes for Luo Xi, then went to the registration office alone. A team of nearly a hundred people and several armored vehicles still surprised Su Wenwen a little; she had thought the number of people on this trip wouldn’t be too large.
However, among the hundred people, there were only a dozen or so ability users. The rest were ordinary people who had undergone special training and were formerly special forces soldiers with excellent skills. The expression on each of their faces was very cold, carrying a sense of facing death, so there were no smiles.
“Su Wenwen.” Chen Zixuan waved at her.
Su Wenwen was slightly surprised, not expecting that Chen Zixuan had also registered as an Annihilator. Seeing a familiar face, her originally somewhat anxious mood relaxed a lot. She walked over to greet Chen Zixuan.
Ever since Chen Zixuan returned to the Sea Base, the Adjutant had arranged a place for her to live. But the crystal cores she had obtained before were all given to the Adjutant, so the place she lived in had nothing. She even had to go to the periphery to move bricks6 to earn crystal cores. Her days were more miserable than a corporate slave’s.
“Why didn’t you come find us?” Su Wenwen was puzzled.
“Although I’m a member of your squad, it’s not like I don’t have hands and feet. As long as it’s not an extremely difficult situation, I don’t seem to have any reason to come find you for help.”
Su Wenwen smiled helplessly, “This is the apocalypse, a special time calls for special treatment. If you have difficulties, just say so. Don’t be embarrassed.”
“Alright, I’ll definitely find you next time.” Chen Zixuan pointed to a man in the crowd and said, “His name is Lin Yu7. He’s the captain of this team.”
Lin Yu was burly, dressed in combat gear, with a handgun tucked at his waist and a military knife strapped to his thigh. He looked quite reliable.
Lin Yu noticed the gazes of Su Wenwen and Chen Zixuan, and seeing that Su Wenwen was only carrying a backpack, he walked over and asked coldly, “Do you know how to use a gun?”
Su Wenwen felt the gazes of everyone turn toward her, and she suddenly felt pressured. But she really didn’t know how to use a gun and was also afraid of accidentally injuring a teammate, so she could only shake her head honestly and say, “I use a knife. I don’t know how to use a gun.”
After hearing her answer, someone let out a sneer, but the sound was very quiet and disappeared in an instant.
Lin Yu raised his hand, signaling for everyone to get in the vehicles, and distributed a walkie-talkie to each person. When Su Wenwen took the walkie-talkie, she heard Lin Yu say to her, “You ride in the same vehicle as me.”
Su Wenwen frowned but didn’t ask further, following Lin Yu into the same armored vehicle. Chen Zixuan followed behind Su Wenwen and sat next to her. Lin Yu sat in the front passenger seat. He spoke to everyone through the walkie-talkie, “There is a village on the island that we have not yet explored. The purpose of this trip, besides collecting winter clothes and cotton, is to clear out zombies. All crystal cores obtained will be handed over to me for safekeeping and will be distributed equally after we return safely to the base.”
“This village once relied on fishing for a living, and half of the village is built on the sea. You must be especially careful not to fall into the sea, or else no one will come to save you.”
Su Wenwen sat quietly in the back listening, but in her mind, she was thinking about why Lin Yu specifically wanted her to follow him. At the base, she was a stranger in a new place. After thinking it over, it was possibly related to the Luo family. In that case, there were only two possibilities: the first was protection, and the second was to kill her.
She didn’t know if Lin Yu was here to protect her or to kill her. It seemed this trip would not be too smooth. Su Wenwen observed Lin Yu thoughtfully. Just looking at his facial features, he seemed like he wouldn’t be easy to get along with. His sharp eyes were still clean and translucent, but they just seemed excessively devoid of human warmth.
The convoy entered the outer perimeter. There were still many people working on the high walls. Young men and women on the roadside stopped in their tracks. They were dressed very thinly, and when the cold wind blew, they all wrapped their arms around their bodies to seek a trace of warmth.
Many people knew about this mission, so everyone came to see them off, waving excitedly at the team, hoping the team could bring back more supplies for warmth.
Seeing this scene, Su Wenwen felt that Ji Qingshuang was truly remarkable, to be able to build a place of peace for people in a chaotic world, and without any signs of chaos at all. Everyone was no different from before the apocalypse, all maintaining hope for future survival and their kindness.
