I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 6

Not abandoned

The zombies at the gas station slowly walked towards the bus. Most of them were missing body parts. The worst one was missing half its body, with a section of its small intestine hanging out from its side.

Some people were timid and hid under the seats, afraid of being seen by the zombies and also afraid of seeing their gruesome appearance.

Su Wenwen was already used to it and could calmly watch the zombies approach the window below her seat.

It was about thirty meters from here to the fuel tank. The man started the engine again and slowly drove the bus closer to the tank. Zombies crowded in front of the bus, getting pushed over and crushed, their flesh and blood turning into pulp. Even their hard foreheads burst open like watermelons.

The people in the bus broke out in a cold sweat.

The old man held the little girl, not daring to speak. The others also grabbed the handrails and stood up. Through the large front windshield of the bus, they could clearly see the dense mass of zombie hands constantly hitting the glass. Although the zombies’ bodies were fragile, their strength was considerable.

Cracks appeared on the glass from the pounding.

Fortunately, at this moment, the bus stopped next to the fuel tank. However, how to remove the bus’s fuel cap and the nozzle from the pump became a major problem.

No one was willing to risk leaving the bus. They all just looked at each other. Finally, the man suggested that since the bus had two doors, they could lure the zombies to the front or back of the bus, allowing someone to safely exit through the other door.

Although the idea was good, still no one was willing to get off and take the risk. Needless to say, the old man and the little girl weren’t suitable. On the bus, only Su Wenwen and Luo Xi were women. But in the face of life and death, no one cared if you were male or female.

“Let’s draw lots. It’s the fairest way,” someone suggested.

Drawing lots meant Su Wenwen might also have to get off the bus. However, seeing that everyone agreed, she could only nod in approval. The method for drawing lots was simple: black-white pairing1. The smaller group would get off to refuel the bus, while the larger group would take turns attracting the zombies’ attention.

This purely relied on luck. Su Wenwen’s luck had never been very good; she had never won any prizes. Her first love even turned out to be a scumbag woman like Helian Yun. Sure enough, Su Wenwen’s hand ended up palm up, putting her in the smaller group. She had to get off and refuel.

Luo Xi was in the larger group, so she could stay on the bus.

I’m doomed if the mission fails, Su Wenwen thought.

【It wouldn’t count as a failure. As long as the Host completes the mission later, the punishment will end. Plus, killing zombies rewards attribute points2 that can be added to the personal panel. However, there’s one thing to note: because the Host is a cannon fodder passerby, the current upper limit for personal attributes is ten points.】

That’s actually good news.

Su Wenwen didn’t hesitate to take out a kitchen knife and stood in front of the back door of the bus. Going around from here would be a shorter route.

“You actually have a knife?” someone pointed at Su Wenwen.

The people on the bus looked in the direction the person was pointing.

After all, Su Wenwen had survived in the apocalypse and had also died tragically. The combination of these experiences seemed to give her eyes and demeanor a chilling aura, making that person subconsciously take a step back and ask no more questions.

Three other men also had to get off. Just looking at the scene outside the window made them tremble uncontrollably. Seeing a girl like Su Wenwen so calm, they subconsciously moved behind her.

Someone opened the window by the driver’s seat and kept banging on the bus frame. The zombies’ eyesight had deteriorated, but their hearing was enhanced. They all crowded near the driver’s seat, looking up and reaching out, trying to drag the people inside the bus out.

Seeing that the zombies had all moved away, Su Wenwen gently pulled open the pneumatic door with her hand and slowly walked step by step to the back of the bus. The other three men followed closely behind her. The zombies were all attracted by the noise from the driver’s seat area and didn’t notice them here.

The sky was gloomy. The flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder also helped to hide their footsteps. However, it had been thundering for several hours that day, yet not a single drop of rain had fallen, which was very strange.

Su Wenwen carefully opened the fuel cap. The other three men quickly fumbled with the fuel pump. The moment gasoline sprayed out, it inevitably made some noise. The zombies’ ears were sharp, and they turned to look. Although the group managed to hide behind the fuel pump in time, the zombies had no intelligence. Even if they couldn’t see living people, they would follow the sound to investigate.

Su Wenwen gripped the kitchen knife tightly. Hearing the zombies’ roars getting closer, she started to feel nervous. Needless to say, the others were even worse; their legs were shaking so much they were about to wet their pants.

She held her breath and quickly composed herself. The moment a zombie poked its head out, she decisively swung the knife with all her strength, striking it right in the center of its forehead. The impact made her hand go numb.

It wasn’t her first time killing a zombie, but seeing its rotten face so close still filled her with a horrifying fear.

【Beep: Attribute Points +1】

Su Wenwen didn’t hesitate and added the one attribute point to strength. Instantly, she felt her previously weak hand suddenly gain power. She pulled out the kitchen knife and, gritting her teeth, slashed at another zombie rushing towards her.

She had originally aimed for the zombie’s softer neck, but her current body, having sat in an office for a long time, was a bit stiff. Her movement was a beat too slow, and she only managed to slash the zombie’s arm.

“Roar!” The deafening sound made the zombies near the driver’s seat turn back. Seeing this, the three men turned and ran, not even bothering with the fuel nozzle still attached to the bus.

A zombie lunged at Su Wenwen. She dodged it by turning sideways and, enduring her trembling hands, swung the knife again at the back of the zombie’s head. One strike didn’t break the bone, so she followed up with several more blows.

After a person is infected, although they are considered dead, the virus keeps the body active. White brain matter and fresh blood flowed out from the cracks, mixed with some unknown yellowish-brown liquid.

Su Wenwen added the newly acquired attribute point to strength again. She felt her strength increase a bit more. When she swung the knife to crack open another zombie’s skull, it didn’t feel as strenuous.

“Su Wenwen, come back quickly!” Luo Xi shouted.

Su Wenwen looked towards the sound and saw Luo Xi reaching her hand out of the bus window. A wound had appeared on her originally delicate skin, and bright red blood was continuously flowing down, luring the zombies back again.

Su Wenwen quickly removed the fuel nozzle, closed the fuel cap, turned, and ran. In front of the bus door, a man was standing there waving at her. It was the man with the mask who had a blister on the corner of his mouth and was suspected of being infected.

The masked man suddenly lowered his head and coughed, then swayed. When he looked up at Su Wenwen again, his gaze was somewhat unfocused. But he was far away, and she couldn’t see clearly, so she wasn’t entirely sure.

The moment she got close to the masked man, she felt a chill for some reason and subconsciously slowed her pace.

At that exact moment, the masked man lunged at Su Wenwen like a madman, making a horrifying sound. Although he was wearing a mask, his eyes had turned completely grayish-white.

Su Wenwen broke out in a cold sweat. She used the strength of both hands to lock onto the zombie’s neck to prevent herself from being bitten. But the zombie’s strength was immense; even with two points added to her strength, it was hard to resist.

She used all her strength to grip the zombie’s throat tightly, but its lowered head got closer and closer to Su Wenwen’s neck. Soon, she felt her hands swelling, her muscles aching, and her strength gradually fading.

【Insufficient stamina. The Host’s body has reached its limit.】

Even without the system’s reminder, Su Wenwen knew her body was about to give out. Once a normal person was caught by a zombie, there was no escaping. She could only call out to others for help, but before she could even speak, she heard more zombies closing in from all directions. At that moment, the bus engine started, seemingly about to abandon her.

Realizing this, Su Wenwen’s body couldn’t stop trembling.

The pain of being torn apart by zombies in her previous life resurfaced. Because her body was trembling so violently, her hands completely lost their strength. The zombie’s dead-looking eyes magnified before her. Even though it wore a mask, Su Wenwen could imagine how horrifying its gaping mouth was.

Her gaze instantly became vacant.

There was no anticipated pain. The zombie’s forehead was pierced by a thin, black high heel. It fell beside Su Wenwen. Before she could react, Luo Xi pulled her onto the bus, and the door closed just in time, blocking all the zombies outside.

Su Wenwen watched the zombie lying on the ground outside the bus gradually recede into the distance, her mind blank for a long time. She just mechanically said to Luo Xi, “Thank you…”

Just moments ago, she thought she was going to be abandoned. She never expected Luo Xi to risk getting off the bus to save her. The words “thank you” alone were not enough to express the gratitude Su Wenwen felt.

Luo Xi didn’t reply. She just pursed her lips, sat down, and asked, “Do you have any tissues in your backpack?”

Su Wenwen opened her backpack and handed the tissues to Luo Xi.

There was some filth on Luo Xi’s heel. She took off her shoe and wiped it bit by bit with a tissue. Her rounded toes, wrapped in flesh-colored stockings, were slightly curled, with nowhere to rest, so she kept her foot raised.

Su Wenwen knew the villain had mysophobia3, but she didn’t expect the villain to prioritize cleaning the filth off her shoe over treating the wound on her wrist. Thinking about how the villain had just saved her, she felt that a small task like cleaning shoes should be her responsibility. So, she squatted down in front of the villain and, under the villain’s surprised gaze, took the high heel and began to wipe it carefully.

【Beep: Blackening Value -1】

Su Wenwen looked up and happened to meet the villain’s gaze.

The villain’s eyes were long and slender, making her gaze seem sharp. However, a beauty mark at the corner of her eye softened this sharpness somewhat, adding a hint of tenderness. Su Wenwen’s cheeks grew hot from being looked at. She quickly lowered her head, finished cleaning the shoe, and then reached out to support the sole of the villain’s foot.

“I’ll do it myself.” Luo Xi could feel an unfamiliar warmth on the sole of her foot. She quickly pulled her foot back, avoiding the touch.

“Oh.”

Just as Su Wenwen put the high heel down, the bus suddenly lurched violently, causing her to fall and land on her butt on the floor. Because the villain had one foot raised and no support for her hands, she lost her balance and happened to fall towards Su Wenwen.

【Host, quick, hug the villain!】

As soon as the system’s words fell, Su Wenwen felt a surge of excitement. She quickly opened her arms and accurately caught the villain in a hug. Both of them fell backward. The other people in the bus also tumbled to the floor. The entire bus tilted at about a thirty-degree angle before landing steadily.

The impact made the bus body shake up and down.

【Congratulations on completing the mission. The ‘cannon fodder passerby’ punishment has been lifted.】
