I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 57

Her Schemes Are Only Aimed at Others

Three days later, everyone began boarding the ships one after another. Because Su Wenwen had not yet completed her side quest, she chose to board a cruise ship with the ordinary people. Luo Xi and Chen Zixuan naturally had to follow her. For some unknown reason, the Adjutant and other Ability Users also boarded the cruise ship.

Su Wenwen was a little puzzled. She looked back at the Adjutant; sometimes this person made her feel he was very sinister, yet at other times she felt he wasn’t that difficult to get along with. At the very least, he was reasonable. Finding him hard to figure out, she simply turned her head and asked Luo Xi, “Why isn’t he boarding the warship?”

Luo Xi frowned in thought for a moment, then glanced over at the warship. Hiding the worry in her brow, she smiled and shook her head, indicating she didn’t know.

Su Wenwen had no choice but to put away her doubts and inspect the cruise ship. The vessel’s hull was extremely sturdy, and there were enough rooms for everyone to rest. However, the rooms on the cruise ship hadn’t been cleaned in months and were covered everywhere in the sediments of time; the occupants would have to clean them themselves.

Since Su Wenwen had nothing better to do anyway, she decided to join the cleaning crew. Besides the rooms, places like the lounge and restrooms also needed to be tidied. But just as she picked up a broom, an ordinary person who recognized her snatched it away.

“You can just leave this kind of small task to us.”

“That’s right, you’re already tired enough from killing zombies and protecting us. Just let us do what little we can!” A woman holding a child walked over, her face beaming with a smile of post-disaster survival and gratitude.

Su Wenwen didn’t insist, nodding her head and saying, “I’ll have to trouble you then.”

“It’s no trouble at all.”

They first cleaned Su Wenwen’s room and then, having found some fresh flowers from who-knows-where, placed them by the window. This room was located above the main deck in the center of the ship; it was a balcony room, so it had a window and excellent lighting. Through the window, one could see the tranquil ocean, which seemed to melt into the blue sky.

The small child was also in a great mood. Well-fed, his clear laughter sounded exceptionally crisp in the room. He seemed to like Su Wenwen very much, stretching out his hands for a hug.

Su Wenwen took the child from the woman’s arms and played with him for a while, then gave him a little something to eat before returning him to his mother.

She discovered that among the ordinary people on the ship, their ages ranged from their teens to their forties. There were almost no younger children. Although the life and death of others had nothing to do with her, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of sorrow, finding the atmosphere lifeless. That was why, the moment she heard the child’s joyful laughter, she felt it was so precious.

“Mama Wenwen is quite popular with children.” After everyone had left, Luo Xi closed the heavy cabin door and leaned against it, watching Su Wenwen without blinking.

The address “Mama Wenwen” came about because the woman had asked her child to call her Auntie, but the little one was only a dozen or so months old and could only babble “Mama.”

Su Wenwen’s face flushed red as she glared at Luo Xi without any real menace. “You’re not allowed to tease me.”

Hearing this, Luo Xi obediently reined in her smile. She sat down on the edge of the bed as if nothing had happened and said, “Jokes aside, there were too many people just now, so there were some things I couldn’t say. The reason the Adjutant brought the Ability Users onto the cruise ship is very likely to use the warship as bait.”

Su Wenwen was slightly startled. If even a warship had to be used as bait, didn’t that mean this stretch of sea was extremely dangerous?

“After the Adjutant arrived at the port, he didn’t choose to immediately board a ship for the offshore base. He was probably discussing this matter with the others,” Luo Xi continued. “So tonight, we’ll have to take shifts for watch duty. We can’t sleep too soundly.”

Su Wenwen nodded, her heart filled with pity. “Then the people on the warship will have to…”

Seeing Su Wenwen trail off, Luo Xi helplessly reached out, pulled her over to sit by her side, and said softly, “This was the result of their collective discussion. What we can do is stay alive and not waste their sacrifice.”

“Mm.”

Around noon, the few ships finally departed from the port. The fleet maintained a certain distance, with the three warships on the periphery, encircling and protecting the other ships in the center.

Su Wenwen and Luo Xi stood on the deck at the ship’s bow. Before them was a boundless ocean, filled with unknown dangers at every turn, leaving them no mood to appreciate its beauty.

The ordinary people were unaware of this matter. They stood on the deck one by one, enjoying the tranquility the ocean brought. Seeing gulls fly by, some even joked about whether they could hunt the birds for food.

Su Wenwen couldn’t bear to shatter such a wonderful and relaxed atmosphere. Everyone truly needed to unwind, herself included. But she knew it wasn’t the time yet, so she activated her five senses, feeling everything beneath the ocean.

Schools of fish swam by in the currents, sounding like a gentle breeze rustling through leaves with a “shasha” sound. Colorful corals, timid shellfish, deep and gloomy seaweed—everything appeared so ordinary.

When night fell, Su Wenwen first returned to her room to rest. Luo Xi stood guard on the deck, observing the surroundings. In the latter half of the night, Su Wenwen would take over for Luo Xi.

At night, the ships would only have a single light on to confirm each other’s positions; the rest depended entirely on the captain’s piloting skills.

However, what surprised Su Wenwen a little was that Helian Yun was also on watch for the second half of the night. The two of them stood on opposite sides of the bow like strangers, neither saying a word.

“So sleepy, so boring. Should we play Xiangqi to pass the time?” Chen Zixuan walked over to Su Wenwen’s side, holding a Xiangqi1 set and yawning.

Xiangqi

“If you’re sleepy, you should go back and rest. We don’t need so many people on watch anyway,” Su Wenwen said, not particularly interested in Xiangqi.

Chen Zixuan cast a mournful glance at Su Wenwen. If Luo Xi hadn’t ordered her in a grim tone to watch Su Wenwen, she wouldn’t have gotten up in the middle of the night.

Thinking of this, Chen Zixuan sighed. Remembering Luo Xi’s words, she quickly put on a pitiful act and said, “Wenwen, I know you’re the best. Just play a couple of games with me, please?”

Sure enough, seeing her with downcast eyes and a lonely, desolate look, Su Wenwen immediately agreed to play Xiangqi with her.

Su Wenwen’s Xiangqi skill was just like her personality—not much scheming involved. When she wanted to capture a cannon2 or a chariot3, she used no tactics whatsoever, all but shoving the piece in Chen Zixuan’s face to declare her intent.

After a few games, Su Wenwen was utterly defeated. Her face flushed red with anger, she slapped her palm on the deck and said, “Again! I refuse to believe I can’t beat you.”

Chen Zixuan smiled. She now understood why Luo Xi liked Su Wenwen. She was truly so cheerful and sunny, and her vibrant energy gave Chen Zixuan the spirit for another match. The result was that Su Wenwen was defeated even faster.

But Su Wenwen became more courageous with each setback, or perhaps, more indignant. After a few more games, she had also learned Chen Zixuan’s resourcefulness. With a feint, she sacrificed a cannon to capture a chariot, putting her opponent directly in check.

Just as the two were having fun, Helian Yun walked over at this moment. Sensing the gaze from behind her, Su Wenwen felt a bit unnatural and said to Chen Zixuan, “It’s almost dawn. Why don’t I go back and rest first, and let Luo Xi come take your place?”

Chen Zixuan nodded hastily.

Seeing this, Helian Yun’s face turned pale and sorrowful. “Wenwen, are you avoiding me like a snake or a scorpion4 now?”

Su Wenwen turned around and looked at her calmly. “Of course not. I’m not single anymore, so I have to be a little more mindful of the distance between us.”

Hearing this, Chen Zixuan raised an eyebrow, thinking to herself that Su Wenwen was a person who understood boundaries. Luo Xi sending her to keep an eye on her was completely unnecessary.

No one knew what Helian Yun said to Su Wenwen, but she walked back into the ship’s cabins, crestfallen. She unintentionally arrived at the door to Luo Xi’s room. She paused for a moment, then her gaze flickered as she stared at the handle on the cabin door. If she propped something against this, then Luo Xi would be locked inside.

But just as this thought flashed through her mind, the cabin door was opened by Luo Xi. Helian Yun pressed her lips together, and just as she was about to leave, she heard her say, “The way you looked at me just now had killing intent. Are you thinking of getting rid of me?”

How could something as ethereal as killing intent be seen? But in that instant, Helian Yun did indeed have that thought. She turned around and smiled, “You’re overthinking it. Killing you wouldn’t benefit me in any way.”

“How could there be no benefit? Without me, perhaps Su Wenwen would fall for you again.” Luo Xi’s red lips curled, and her long, narrow eyes half-closed, revealing wisps of coldness.

Helian Yun’s expression twisted for a moment. This thought had indeed appeared in her mind, but she had quickly rejected it herself, because she couldn’t even win against a living person, so how could she possibly win against a dead one.

Luo Xi spoke again, “It’s fine. You saved me once, so I’ll give you one chance to kill me. If you make a move now, I promise not to fight back.”

Helian Yun was stunned. If Luo Xi really saw that she wanted to kill her, how could she say such a thing so lightly? She couldn’t quite figure this person out, but she wouldn’t play along with her. “You’re overthinking it. I don’t want to kill you.”

Just as she finished speaking, Su Wenwen came over, talking and laughing with Chen Zixuan. Cold sweat instantly broke out on Helian Yun’s forehead, and her back was so cold it felt devoid of any warmth. But Luo Xi merely smiled faintly before turning to walk toward Su Wenwen.

Watching Luo Xi’s back, Helian Yun suddenly felt that this person was far more terrifying than she appeared on the surface. She had clearly seen that she wanted to get rid of her, yet she was able to set a trap according to her mood. If Su Wenwen had appeared any later, she was certain Luo Xi would have said something infuriating to provoke her into action.

Helian Yun leaned weakly against the wall. Seeing Su Wenwen’s foolishly happy expression, she figured that even if she said Luo Xi was dangerous, she probably wouldn’t believe her.

Suddenly, a flare shot into the sky, illuminating the dark night as if it were day. Seeing this, Luo Xi’s first reaction was to have Chen Zixuan wake up the sleeping ordinary people, before she and Su Wenwen ran to the deck.

The flare was fired from the warship to their front right. Around the warship, the waves were particularly violent, crashing against the hull from time to time. Su Wenwen activated her five senses and stared intently at the waves. It seemed some enormous creature was moving under the sea, and there was more than one.

The crew members fired their guns continuously into the sea, but it was unknown if they hit anything. The waves grew fiercer, causing the heavy warship to start shaking. Some crew members were thrown overboard into the sea, where they were then swallowed by a huge mouth, without even a single drop of blood to be seen.
