I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 50

I Do Harbor Ill Intentions Towards You

It was hard to say whether the city center was too dangerous, or if the Adjutant had decided not to make things difficult for Su Wenwen, but he ordered the convoy to head to the outskirts to find food.

Luo Xi hadn’t closed her eyes all night and was now taking a short nap in the passenger seat. Su Wenwen was driving, but her mind was replaying the words Helian Yun had said.

She was somewhat bothered by the way Luo Xi had harmed her own body to gain her sympathy. It reminded her of how Helian Yun had once used similar tactics to make her fall into self-doubt, to despise herself for being the kind to suspect gods and ghosts1, leaving her with nothing to do each day but wait with a panicked heart.

Su Wenwen glanced at the sleeping Luo Xi. Having not slept all night, her complexion looked very haggard, and the tear mole at the corner of her eye lent her a pitifully endearing air. Even though she had many questions she wanted to ask, she ultimately couldn’t bear to wake her up.

The convoy drove on. The roadside became increasingly desolate, surrounded everywhere by great mountains. Lush, dense trees soared high, nearly obscuring half the blue sky. The fiery sunlight caused the temperature inside the car to climb continuously. Even with the windows open, the air rushing in was a wave of heat.

Su Wenwen was already drenched in sweat. Moreover, the clothes she was wearing were still the same blood-stained, torn T-shirt from yesterday. She kept feeling like a foul smell was wafting through the car, making her too embarrassed to close the windows and turn on the air conditioning.

Before long, Luo Xi was also woken by the heat.

Su Wenwen, with one hand, took a bottle of water out from her spatial backpack, unscrewed the cap, and then passed it to Luo Xi, looking at her as if she wanted to say something but was hesitating.

Luo Xi: “Something to say?”

Su Wenwen chose her words carefully. “Back when I was being controlled by that mental power zombie, how did you break free?”

Luo Xi recalled, “I just felt an unbearable headache; I wasn’t actually controlled. But when I saw you standing there with a dazed look, I guessed your mind had been controlled by the zombie. I couldn’t wake you, so I could only kill the zombie first. Who knew that the moment I got close, you’d start attacking me like a madwoman.”

“Why didn’t you use your mental power to stop me?” Su Wenwen was puzzled. With Luo Xi’s mental power, controlling both the zombie and her at the same time shouldn’t have been difficult.

“That zombie’s mental power wasn’t weak. I was afraid it would launch a sneak attack, so I could only just barely use my mental power to hold it in place.” Luo Xi looked at Su Wenwen’s flickering gaze and said gently, “You’re suddenly asking about this because Helian Yun said something to you, right?”

Having her thoughts seen through, Su Wenwen felt a bit embarrassed, as if she deeply distrusted Luo Xi. For a moment, she didn’t know how to respond.

“After Helian Yun helped me expel the zombie toxin from my body, I refused her further treatment. One, I didn’t want to owe her too many favors, and two, I wanted to use this injury to train my mental power.” Luo Xi took a sip of water to wet her throat and said with a smile, “Of course, you can also believe that I did it on purpose to make you feel sorry for me.”

“I didn’t… I didn’t think that…” Su Wenwen’s face flushed, her voice lacking confidence. “So the fact your wound stopped bleeding so quickly wasn’t because of Helian Yun?”

“En, I used my mental power to connect my severed meridians, which is like a more advanced form of wireless stitching. Once my mental power is strong enough, I’ll also be able to expel zombie toxin on my own. In the future, nothing will be able to hurt me, and you won’t have to worry about me every day.”

Hearing Luo Xi say this, a soft feeling spread through Su Wenwen’s heart, and she said guiltily, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have suspected you of harboring ill intentions.”

“Don’t apologize to me…” Luo Xi looked at Su Wenwen, her charming eyes like threads of silk. “Because I do, in fact, harbor ill intentions towards you.”

Su Wenwen’s eyelids trembled. A wave of sweetness filled her heart, and she was so shy she could only dare to stare at the rear of the car in front of them.

After finishing the water, Luo Xi found it inconvenient to screw the cap on, so she had to hand it to Su Wenwen to tighten. As she was putting the water bottle into the armrest box, Luo Xi’s left hand shot out without warning and hooked around Su Wenwen’s right. She smiled and said, “Good thing my left hand wasn’t injured. I can still hold your hand like this.”

A strange feeling passed through Su Wenwen’s heart. She felt that the questions she had just asked had made Luo Xi feel insecure, and only by grasping her hand tightly like this could she calm down. She subconsciously squeezed Luo Xi’s hand back and said, “Then once your right shoulder is healed, it’ll be your turn to drive, and I’ll hold your right hand.”

Luo Xi pursed her lips into a smile and said, “Okay.”

Fortunately, the nanny van was fully automatic, so Su Wenwen could drive it steadily with just one hand. Their clasped hands never parted, and neither of them felt uncomfortable with the sticky layer of thin sweat between them.

The convoy came to a stop at the foot of a mountain. The mountain was enclosed by a long wall, and inside were all peach trees, the peaches large and succulent. Except for Luo Xi, the patient, the Adjutant ordered everyone else to get out of the cars and pick peaches.

Perhaps due to the influence of the red rain, the peaches of this season, which should have long since rotted, were still hanging firmly on the fruit trees. Someone, parched with thirst, impatiently picked a peach and began to eat. With one bite, it was full of sweet juice. The look of satisfaction made others unable to resist picking and eating them too.

The Adjutant said, “Try your best to pick peaches that aren’t fully ripe. They can be stored for longer.”

Su Wenwen had her spatial backpack and didn’t have to worry about the peaches rotting at all, so all the ones she picked were fully ripe. She ate as she picked, her demeanor leisurely, the corners of her mouth constantly turned up in a smile. Outsiders could clearly see that she was in an excellent mood.

But the happiest were the ordinary people in the van. The peaches not only quenched their thirst but also provided sugar, which was exactly what their bodies needed. The children could also drink some peach juice to supplement their nutrition, and they wouldn’t have to suffer the Adjutant’s disdainful looks.

However, they hadn’t been happy for long before someone discovered severed limbs. It was obvious that there were zombies nearby. They quickly put away the peaches they had picked and returned to their cars, so as not to cause trouble for everyone.

Su Wenwen activated her five senses to search the orchard.

Her vision could see very far, but once her line of sight was obstructed by trees, she could no longer see. However, she could still rely on her hearing to lock onto the shambling footsteps of zombies—to her right front.

She squinted for a closer look.

Three zombies were walking this way. One of them was a canine-type zombie, its body extremely large. Half of its ulcerated skin had fallen off, making it look like a coat hanging on a rack.

Su Wenwen gave Chen Zixuan a look.

Chen Zixuan sensed the tense atmosphere and quickly said to everyone, “Hurry, get in the cars and leave this place.”

But just as she finished speaking, a zombie’s roar responded at that exact moment. Even though Su Wenwen had maxed out her mental power, the figure of the zombie dog still vanished from before her eyes. Her whole body tensed. Just as she was about to warn the others, she saw the Adjutant’s eyes narrow. Before anyone else could react, he raised both hands and caught the charging zombie dog out of thin air.

But the force of the zombie dog’s impact was extremely strong, sending him flying along with the Adjutant. The moment he landed, the Adjutant flipped over and straddled the zombie dog, his arms locked tightly around the dog’s neck. The man’s thick arms were like iron chains; the zombie dog kept whipping its neck but was unable to break free from the Adjutant’s clamp.

Chen Zixuan, holding a sharp blade, dealt with the other two zombies that had rushed into the group. Su Wenwen had originally intended to go forward and help, but then she remembered that in front of others, she was just an ordinary person right now. If she joined the battle, wouldn’t she be exposed?

In that moment of hesitation, someone was caught by a zombie and let out a blood-curdling scream. Chen Zixuan lacked the art to split her body2, the Adjutant was dealing with the zombie dog, and the other people’s abilities were too weak. Their fireballs missed, and instead, they set a fruit tree ablaze.

In no time, the strength-ability user who had been bitten to death turned into a zombie, his strength becoming even greater. With a single charge, he knocked Chen Zixuan flying. Su Wenwen quickly leaped forward and caught Chen Zixuan, the two of them tumbling to the ground together, getting covered in mud.

The zombie chased after Chen Zixuan. Su Wenwen pulled out the military knife tucked at her waist. Before she could make a move, the zombie’s figure suddenly froze. Helian Yun had stabbed it in the back of the neck, but the dagger only broke the zombie’s skin and didn’t injure the bone.

“Run!”

In Helian Yun’s eyes, Su Wenwen was just an ordinary person, so when she saw the zombie running towards Su Wenwen, she lost her composure. Knowing full well she was no match, she still fearfully took her watermelon knife and went to hack at the zombie.

She gripped the handle with both hands and pushed forward, but the zombie’s bones were as hard as iron. Her strength was too little; she couldn’t pierce it at all. In the next moment, she was sent flying by a backhand punch from the zombie, a spray of blood erupting from her mouth and scattering onto the ground.

With just one blow, her entire body ached so much she couldn’t get up. The hair tie that had been holding her hair up also snapped, and her dark hair scattered, a tragic beauty spilling across the ground.

Smelling the scent of blood, the zombie slowly turned again, fixing its gaze on Helian Yun. And at that moment, Su Wenwen, holding her military knife, quietly approached the zombie from behind. But before she could make a move, the zombie suddenly began to fold, bit by bit, like a piece of paper. Its bones emitted a KACHA sound, and its torn skin squeezed out a pile of thick fluid.

Its neck made a terrifying one-hundred-and-eighty-degree turn, its twisted face wrenched around to face Su Wenwen. From the corners of its eyes, its nose, its mouth—from every orifice—a disgusting liquid flowed out. Then, it was kneaded into a ball and stopped moving.

Even with her strong mental fortitude, Su Wenwen couldn’t help but take a few steps back in fright. The zombie’s state of death was extremely horrifying; it was impossible to tell which part was a hand and which was the head.

The only person who could kill a zombie so silently was Luo Xi. Thinking this, Su Wenwen turned her head to look. Sure enough, Luo Xi had followed the noise to check on the situation. However, it seemed she had run over, as the wound on her shoulder had split open, and a trace of bright red was peeking through her clothes.

Luo Xi surveyed her surroundings, her mental power first locking onto the ordinary zombies. Under the terrified gazes of the others, she once again kneaded a zombie into a ball. Perhaps because her mental power was too strong, even the nearby trees swayed violently, causing green leaves and peaches to fall to the ground.

The zombie dog was still being firmly straddled by the Adjutant. Even though his back slammed into a tree several times, he showed no sign of letting go. However, the zombie dog’s body was extremely tough; he couldn’t snap its neck, nor could he get a hand free to grab a knife.

After a stalemate of several minutes, the clothes on his body were soaked through with sweat. He didn’t dare to relax for even a moment, because if he loosened his grip and the zombie dog escaped, he wasn’t sure he could catch it again with the same reaction time honed by years of training.

Just as he was wondering what to do, the corner of his eye caught sight of Luo Xi walking over. He saw her smile faintly, a hint of playfulness in it, as she said, “Adjutant has a metal ability, right? In a moment, Adjutant, you’ll need to use your ability to protect your body well. I’m not very familiar with controlling my mental power yet, so I can only subdue the zombie dog along with you.”

The Adjutant hadn’t yet understood the meaning of her words when he suddenly felt an immense pressure around him. He hurriedly shielded himself with his ability, but the pressure didn’t weaken. Instead, it grew stronger and stronger, pressing both him and the zombie dog to the ground.

He wanted to stand up, but he couldn’t even move a finger. He could only barely move his eyes to see Luo Xi’s cold and indifferent expression, as if she intended to eliminate him along with the zombie dog, which sent a slight shock through his heart.
