I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 5

Came up empty

The villain walked over and handed the constantly ringing phone to Su Wenwen. Su Wenwen was very confused. With a glance, her face immediately darkened.

Good grief, it was actually Helian Yun calling.

“Luo Xi, where are you?” Helian Yun’s usually delicate and soft voice now sounded particularly magnetic. “It’s very dangerous outside now, there are people eating people everywhere. Tell me your address, and I’ll come pick you up.”

Luo Xi was the villain’s name.

Su Wenwen held Luo Xi’s phone, listening to the words coming from the receiver, and almost fainted from anger. After all, she hadn’t officially broken up with Helian Yun yet. Not caring about her girlfriend, but instead caring about her boss—it was truly ridiculous.

“Hello, Luo Xi… are you listening?”

“Why is it so noisy on your end? You’re not still outside, are you?” Helian Yun, hearing no reply, became anxious. “Tell me your address, I’ll come pick you up.”

“Don’t trouble yourself, Luo Xi is with me right now!” After saying this, Su Wenwen hung up the phone, blacklisted her while she was at it, and then returned the phone to the villain, saying sarcastically, “You don’t mind me blacklisting your employee for you, do you?”

Luo Xi took back her phone. “I don’t mind.”

【Beep: Blackening Value -1】

Su Wenwen smiled. It seemed the villain genuinely didn’t mind. However, her happiness didn’t last long. Helian Yun called her phone next, which buzzed incessantly, very annoying.

As soon as she answered, she heard a barrage of questions from Helian Yun: “Su Wenwen, what do you mean by this? How did you get involved with my boss?”

What did she mean, ‘gotten involved’? She made it sound as if Su Wenwen had cheated. However, if she wanted to misunderstand like that, she couldn’t be bothered to explain, merely saying calmly, “What do you think I mean?”

She was panting on the other end of the phone. After a moment, Helian Yun softened her tone and said, “Baby, I know I’ve neglected you recently because of work, but you have to understand, I’m working this hard for our future.”

“We haven’t had a future together for a long time,” Su Wenwen said, her face cold. Even now, Helian Yun was still putting on an act.

“Are you dead set on breaking up with me?”

“Mm-hmm, yes I am!”

“Su Wenwen, don’t you regret this.”

After hanging up, Su Wenwen sneered. She only regretted not seeing Helian Yun’s true colors sooner. In her previous life, because she had been so blind, she didn’t know her best friend’s whereabouts, and her parents’ fate—whether they were alive or dead—was unknown. It led to her being deserted by everyone and utterly wretched.

Outside the vehicle, only zombies roamed aimlessly.

The emergency call wouldn’t go through. The inside of the vehicle fell temporarily silent. The man with a blister on the corner of his mouth had fumbled for a mask from somewhere and put it on. Su Wenwen noticed the man’s strange behavior and glanced down at her phone.

Only half an hour had passed since the apocalypse began. She didn’t know when the man would turn.

A little girl sobbed, hiding in an old man’s arms. She was very well-behaved, not crying or making a fuss. But as time went on and no rescue came, people started to get anxious. Someone suggested driving the bus to the police station; after all, with things so chaotic, not knowing how to drive a bus wasn’t a huge problem.

But the bus keys were with the driver, who had now turned into a zombie and run off somewhere. Clearly, this plan wouldn’t work.

Normal people encountering such a situation would panic1, neither daring to risk leaving the bus nor able to just wait there. Just then, someone raised their hand and said he was a car mechanic and knew how to hotwire a car.

Everyone’s attention immediately focused on the man. He took tools from his fanny pack and, in a jiffy2, opened the cover under the steering wheel. Su Wenwen curiously walked over to watch. She didn’t see which wires the man pulled out from underneath, but then he touched them together, and the engine roared to life, attracting nearby zombies.

The man immediately cut the engine. It had only made a sound for a moment, but the zombies had already surrounded the bus, banging against the vehicle’s body with parts of their own. “Thump, thump” sounds were everywhere. The little girl was instantly too scared to make any sound, and the old man lovingly stroked her face.

“Never mind that, let’s go to the police station.”

“Wait, what if the situation at the police station is even worse than outside?” someone voiced a different opinion. “There isn’t much fuel in the bus; we need to plan properly.”

Actually, going to the police station would be useless; the situation there was indeed worse than outside. Su Wenwen actually wanted to get off the bus sooner and go home alone. It was the early days of the apocalypse, so it wouldn’t be a big problem for her to go back by herself.

The reason she had stayed until now was because of a system mission. Before completing the mission, Su Wenwen had to keep the villain on the bus as much as possible.

As long as the bus started moving, they would definitely encounter various situations on the road. Then, she could take the opportunity to pretend to accidentally hug the villain. That way, it wouldn’t seem too deliberate and would avoid causing any aversion.

Everyone was unsure what to decide. The man spoke up, suggesting they go to the police station first. If the situation there was also bad, they would go to a nearby gas station to refuel. Then, moving from near to far, they would pick up everyone’s families on the bus. They could consider what to do after that later.

Su Wenwen strongly agreed. This way, if she wanted to go home, taking the bus back would naturally be the best choice.

The man started the bus.

The engine sound made the zombies frenzied, and they all pressed towards the bus. When the tires started turning, it felt like they were stuck in mud, moving very slowly. Then, the bus picked up speed, running over the zombies blocking its front. The vehicle swayed and quickly left the remaining zombies behind.

However, many cars were blocking the road.

Although the man was a mechanic, he wasn’t very good at driving a bus. The ride was bumpy all the way. Su Wenwen stood next to the villain, gripping a handrail with both hands. Because the villain was wearing high heels, she was half a head taller than Su Wenwen.

Su Wenwen’s gaze remained on the villain, waiting for the right moment. But the villain stood very steadily, even while holding the handrail with just one hand.

Suddenly, the villain’s gaze turned towards her.

A slender eyebrow arched slightly, making the beauty mark3 at the corner of her eye seem exceptionally charming. Ripples formed in Su Wenwen’s otherwise calm heart. She subconsciously averted her gaze, thinking to herself, She’s truly beautiful. No wonder Helian Yun was so hung up on the villain.

With a “Bang!” the large bus rammed a small car blocking the way. The vehicle lurched back and forth. Even gripping the handrail with both hands, Su Wenwen couldn’t keep her balance. Her body tilted slightly. Catching the villain’s figure in the corner of her eye, she then resolutely lunged sideways.

Who knew the villain would be so agile? She sidestepped, and Su Wenwen tumbled directly onto the bus floor, hitting her chin hard. The pain brought tears to her eyes.

She had almost forgotten: the villain had trained with her brother who was in the army and could take on three strong men bare-handed. With Su Wenwen’s build, how could she possibly catch the villain off guard and hug her?

“Young lady, it’s safer for you to sit down,” said the old man holding the girl, gesturing towards the rows of empty seats.

Su Wenwen clutched her chin. Because the bus jolted, she couldn’t get up for a moment. She looked back at the villain, had a flash of inspiration, and held out her hand, saying, “Help me up.”

Luo Xi glanced over. Seeing the red mark on Su Wenwen’s chin and the tears welling in her eyes, looking quite pitiful, she grasped Su Wenwen’s wrist. The moment she pulled her up, Su Wenwen still couldn’t stand steady and her whole body leaned over.

The villain’s other hand was firmly gripping the handrail and couldn’t be freed. Su Wenwen thought she could finally hug her this time, but unexpectedly, the villain actually let go of the handrail and steadied Su Wenwen instead.

Su Wenwen couldn’t figure out how the villain managed to stand so steadily on those slender legs while wearing high heels; it was truly baffling. Now that she had lost the best opportunity, if Su Wenwen tried to lean on the villain again, she would only earn her disgust.

Having no other choice, she had to find an empty seat and sit down.

Her phone went “ding-dong.” Su Wenwen looked down to check it.

She opened the message. It turned out Helian Yun had posted a Weibo update. Su Wenwen had just transmigrated and hadn’t remembered for a moment that her Weibo account was still following Helian Yun.

Because of her work, Helian Yun often used luxury goods, so she had quite a few followers, including the villain. Therefore, the villain might also see this post.

The content was a record of Helian Yun’s transfer of 150,000, accompanied by text that labeled Su Wenwen as a gold-digging woman4 who runs off once she gets the money. Obviously, the post was deliberately made for the villain to see. Su Wenwen almost couldn’t hold back her laughter.

She really didn’t know if Helian Yun was just oblivious or had incredibly strong mental fortitude. Even at a time like this, she still had the mood to slander her. But what surprised Su Wenwen was that the post quickly got likes.

There were also a few comments below cursing Su Wenwen.

(When the apocalypse hits, you really see a person’s true colors. My boyfriend abandoned me too. Now I’m just at home waiting to die, hahaha…)

(Sis, I’m in pretty much the same boat.)

(Don’t worry, scum like that won’t live long anyway.)

(Everyone, don’t lose heart! Wait for rescue.)

Su Wenwen pressed her lips together. Seeing they were almost at the police station, she turned off her phone and stuffed it into her backpack.

The bus stopped in front of the police station. The large gates were wide open and deserted. Inside, there were bloodstains everywhere, on the ground and on the walls. They could even see the upper half of a body in a police uniform slowly inching its way out, dragging a long red trail behind it.

A chill went through everyone.

The man said, “We can only go to the gas station then.”

Everyone nodded. “Okay.”

The bus started up again and headed towards the gas station. Many zombies still charged at them on the way, and the bus body was dented and marked all over. In the buildings above, many surviving residents were watching the bus through their windows.

They didn’t call for help.

After all, the apocalypse had just begun. They would naturally hide at home and wait for rescue. It was just unknown if their food supplies could last until help arrived. Su Wenwen was actually quite worried about her best friend; she knew her best friend’s family too well.

Such goody-goodies.5

The kind of goody-goodies who would still interact with someone like Su Wenwen, even after she had refused her best friend entry at her door. Right now, everyone still maintained a moral bottom line. But once the food ran out and rescue still hadn’t come, even good people with principles would resort to violence for a mouthful to eat.

This kind of situation would become increasingly severe starting from the fourth day of the apocalypse. Hopefully, her best friend remembered Su Wenwen’s words: as long as she didn’t open the door, nothing bad should happen.

The bus suddenly stopped.

Su Wenwen glanced out the window.

The entrance to the gas station was also swarming with zombies. With no weapons in hand, how to get fuel became a difficult problem.
