Not So Scared Anymore
The zombie on the ground had its neck slit, and a thick, black fluid was flowing out. Completely unfazed, Chen Zixuan squatted down and began digging for the crystal core.
This zombie possessed a mental power ability. Its attack power and speed weren’t high, but it could create realistic illusions. Everything Su Wenwen had just seen was the result of being controlled by its mental power.
Chen Zixuan had been affected as well, which was why she had been inexplicably clutching her own throat. Among the three of them, only Luo Xi was a mental power ability user and had a certain degree of resistance. She was the first to regain her senses and used her ability to counter-control the zombie, rendering it immobile.
Su Wenwen wrapped her arms around Luo Xi’s waist. The moment her gaze fell on the wound on Luo Xi’s shoulder, her nose began to tingle. In her despair, she had used all her strength for that stab; the blade had completely sunk into the shoulder blade, piercing through the clothes on her back. The large patch of blood stained the corners of Su Wenwen’s eyes red as well.
Tears streamed down, and she was so deeply enveloped in self-blame and heartache that she couldn’t utter a single word. If she could, she would have stabbed herself twice just to alleviate the bitterness in her heart.
Su Wenwen wiped away her tears. Seeing Luo Xi’s pale lips, she felt powerless. She didn’t even dare to rashly pull out the knife in her shoulder, and to make matters worse, she had forgotten to bring her spacial backpack. Without a first-aid kit to help Luo Xi stop the bleeding, she turned to Chen Zixuan and anxiously chided, “Chen Zixuan, what time do you think it is? How can you still be in the mood to dig for crystal cores?”
“There are zombies all over the place outside, and I already handed all the crystal cores I collected to the Adjutant. I have to stock up on some to replenish my abilities. You don’t want me to exhaust my powers and drag you down, do you?” Chen Zixuan dug out four crystal cores, gave them a simple wipe with a cloth, and stuffed them into her pocket.
“I…” For a moment, Su Wenwen didn’t know how to refute her, or perhaps, she just couldn’t find an outlet for her feelings.
“It’s fine. As long as the knife isn’t pulled out, given the current blood loss from my wound, I should be able to last for two to three hours.” Luo Xi’s eyes held a smile as she gently comforted Su Wenwen. “But I’ve injured my right shoulder. From now on, I’ll really need you to feed me.”
Su Wenwen knew Luo Xi was trying to change the subject to distract her and lessen her guilt, so she obediently managed a smile. “Okay, I’ll feed you.”
Watching the two of them act so intimately as if no one else was there, Chen Zixuan wasn’t particularly surprised. After all, before the apocalypse, the internet was so developed, what secrets could there be? She’d seen everything she should and shouldn’t have, so she was long used to it.
“Given her current condition, she definitely can’t engage in strenuous exercise. But with so many zombies outside, what should we do to leave safely with minimal movement?” Chen Zixuan saw the bloody mess on Luo Xi’s shoulder. Fresh blood trickled down her arm and dripped from her fingertips to the ground, blooming like plum blossoms. “And the smell of her blood will definitely attract the zombies.”
After hearing Chen Zixuan’s analysis of the situation, Su Wenwen had a plan. She pushed Luo Xi toward Chen Zixuan, but the clever Luo Xi quickly sensed her intentions. Her left hand gripped Su Wenwen’s wrist tightly as she smiled. “What, thinking of sacrificing yourself to protect me?”
Hearing this, Su Wenwen was reminded of her past life, where she had sacrificed herself to protect Helian Yun. That was why, after her rebirth, Su Wenwen had decided never to sacrifice herself for anyone.
Su Wenwen looked at Luo Xi’s face, as white as snow, which tugged at her heart like a kite whose string was about to snap. She took a deep breath, smiled at the other woman, and said, “Trust me, I’ll be fine. I don’t plan on sacrificing myself for anyone.”
Luo Xi stared into her eyes for a moment, then smiled faintly, as comforting as a spring breeze. She handed her military knife to Su Wenwen. “Use my knife. I’ll wait for you to come back for me.”
After taking the military knife, Su Wenwen turned and went downstairs.
There was an iron gate at the entrance. Su Wenwen tapped it with the body of the knife, the sharp sound attracting the zombies’ attention. In no time, they swarmed toward her, their terrifying, mangled faces gathering before her eyes.
Su Wenwen suppressed the fear in her heart and led the zombies on a winding run. But there were simply too many of them, converging from all directions. She dodged left and right, raising her hand to stab at the back of a zombie’s neck. Regardless of whether the zombie was dead, she would retreat after a single strike, find an opening, and flee frantically.
The zombies bit at her heels, their speed no slower than hers. But she was agile enough that their pincer attacks from both sides failed to touch her. Her body, enhanced by the system’s attribute points, had become exceptionally flexible. Whether it was bending backward or leaping and flipping, she moved with ease, as slippery as a loach.
But no matter how nimble she was, if her path was blocked, she could only die with regret in the northwest1. Su Wenwen quickly grabbed a zombie’s collar and threw it, knocking down a large swath of zombies like bowling pins.
Before long, however, her muscles began to ache and her movements became a bit sluggish. It was clearly a lack of endurance, which she immediately supplemented with an item.
For a time, she surprisingly maintained a delicate balance with the tireless zombies, with neither side able to gain an advantage over the other. This delicate balance was only broken when she found herself enveloped by a shadow.
Su Wenwen looked up to see a small car plummeting from the sky. It was so close that she couldn’t possibly dodge it, nor did she have time to react. She could only raise her arms and rely on her physical constitution to clash with the metal vehicle.
As the weight pressed down, the moment it touched her arms, it felt as if they were about to be crushed. The pain made her break out in a cold sweat, and her health bar2 was instantly depleted by half. Her entire body was slammed to the ground, her tender skin breaking in countless places. A churning sensation rose in her chest, and she spat out a mouthful of blood. This drew all the zombies to crawl onto the car, which was quickly buried under a small hill of them.
Su Wenwen felt a crushing weight on her body, and her health bar kept dropping. She quickly used an item to restore her health and instructed the system to automatically use items whenever any of her attributes fell below thirty percent.
【Understood. Once items are insufficient, the system will automatically deduct attribute points to purchase items from the store. Therefore, to ensure your survival, please reserve a certain amount of attribute points, Host.】
Su Wenwen endured the pain wracking her body, took a deep breath, and then used every ounce of strength she had for suckling milk3 to hoist the metal car off of her. The zombies that had climbed onto the car tumbled off like sand.
She immediately threw the car forward and quickly turned to flee, but another shadow fell over her. Without a second thought, she rolled to the side to evade it. The abandoned vehicle smashed onto the ground, shattering into pieces along with the zombies.
Before Su Wenwen could even get up, a shadow loomed over her again. Relying on the strength of her legs, she leaped forcefully, flying straight to the second floor of a nearby building. She caught her breath, knowing there was an ability-using zombie nearby. But as she scanned her surroundings, she saw nothing but a sea of bobbing heads, making it difficult to determine which zombie had the ability. If she didn’t eliminate that zombie first, she would likely be successfully ambushed again.
She stood on the second-floor balcony as the zombies below swarmed together, trampling one another and using their comrades to build a ladder to climb up. Su Wenwen didn’t leave immediately. Instead, she used her high-ground advantage to eliminate the climbing zombies one by one with her knife.
Her attribute points steadily increased.
She immediately purchased the last piece of intermediate-grade equipment, which added thirty points to her mental power, reduced damage by five percent, and came with an active set skill: for two minutes, all attribute values increase by 20%, with continuous health regeneration of 100 per second. The cooldown was twenty-four hours.
Although it could only be used once a day, it was an excellent life-saving skill. Su Wenwen quickly activated her five senses, searching for the location of the ability-using zombie.
Her ears were filled with chaotic roars, but she organized them in her mind like files, neatly arranged. Within her field of vision, the movements and appearances of all the zombies were naturally taken in.
She saw a familiar face: the space-ability user. The right half of his face had been gnawed away, revealing stark white bone. A large chunk of flesh was missing from his waist, and the meat on his legs was gone too, making him limp as he walked. Mixed in with a crowd of dismembered zombies, he was somewhat inconspicuous.
Su Wenwen sighed. She figured that he must have stored those cars in his space and then thrown them at her. When he was alive, the physical constitution of a space-ability user was quite average. Even zombified, he probably wouldn’t be too difficult to deal with.
She composed herself and then leaped down.
Seeing this, the zombies once again pounced on her, attacking from front and back. Her two hands were not enough to kill them all, and the surrounding paths were quickly blocked. Another abandoned car fell from above her head. Su Wenwen steeled her heart, and without dodging or evading, she raised her hands to block it again.
It wasn’t just her; a whole swath of zombies was also affected, smashed to the ground. Pinned under the car, Su Wenwen coughed, finding it hard to breathe. She only felt better after an item was used.
The zombies pinned with her hadn’t died either and were struggling to squirm toward her. One of its fleshless hands was exceptionally sharp, scratching her cheek. Smelling fresh blood, it grew even more excited, its eyes seeming to glow.
Su Wenwen was slightly dazed as she grabbed the zombie’s hand. Feeling the warmth of a living person, the zombie kept “awoo-ing”. Although the zombie’s appearance was terrifying, she didn’t know when it started, but she didn’t seem to be so scared of them anymore.
She smiled. Perhaps it was because a warmth had entered my heart, driving out the cold from being torn apart in my past life. Thinking of it that way, what was there to fear even if she was bitten by a zombie?
After all, there was someone waiting for her to return!
Su Wenwen focused, lifting the abandoned car. The now-unpinned zombies were finally able to move and eagerly bit at her wrist. But at the same time, Su Wenwen’s hand clamped down on the zombie’s jaw. With a slight exertion of force, its entire jaw was dislocated, and it instantly lost its biting strength. It could only let out continuous “woo-woo” sounds to vent its craving for blood.
Su Wenwen hurled the car toward the space-ability user. The car traced a graceful arc high in the air, but in the blink of an eye, it vanished. When it reappeared, it was already hanging silently above Su Wenwen’s head.
Ignoring the zombies pouncing at her side, Su Wenwen rolled into the zombie horde. The abandoned car only smashed into other zombies. The ability-using zombie watched as a hill of bodies formed without Su Wenwen emerging. Smelling the scent of blood, it slowly walked over and, like the other zombies, began to burrow into the pile, hoping to get a piece of the meat.
Just as it touched the warm hand of a living person, its wrist was suddenly grabbed in return. Immediately after, the mountain of zombies was instantly thrown into the air. Only one zombie with a dislocated jaw still clung tightly to her body, but it couldn’t bite through her neck no matter how it tried. And more than half of that zombie’s torso had already been gnawed away.
Before he could react, the military knife mercilessly sliced open his neck. Immediately after, Su Wenwen activated her equipment’s skill. A powerful aura erupted from her as she stepped on the bodies of zombies to leap high into the air, climbing up a tall building and vanishing from the zombies’ sight in an instant.
