I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 46

If You Don’t Obey, You Can’t Board the Ship

The lights at the gas station flickered, looking as if they could lose power at any moment. The surroundings were dead silent, creating an illusion of peace, yet it also felt like the calm before a storm, making one feel doubly uneasy.

The child was crying “wah wah” from hunger, so the woman had to use her clothes to cover herself while breastfeeding.

The Adjutant glanced at the crowd in the van with a displeased expression. Su Wenwen noticed his gaze, so she took some food and milk, got out of the vehicle, and gave them to the woman, conveniently blocking the Adjutant’s line of sight. The woman’s eyes were red as she thanked her profusely.

Seeing this, the Adjutant withdrew his gaze and turned to ask Chen Zixuan, “You were sleeping in their van earlier. Did you see any food?”

Chen Zixuan didn’t know why the Adjutant was asking this, but she answered honestly, “I did. More than half the back seat was piled with food. I estimate the trunk has a lot, too.”

“No wonder she’s so generous, even giving milk to others, hehe…” The Adjutant’s face was cold. “Do you know how much food we have left?”

Chen Zixuan shook her head.

“Not much, only enough for one day. Looking at them, they probably don’t plan on sharing their food with us.” The Adjutant waved his hand and issued a new order. “Since we’ve already entered the city, let’s collect the food as well.”

Chen Zixuan was startled, a sense of unease rising in her heart. Sure enough, the Adjutant looked over with a smile and told her to lead a team to scavenge for food nearby. But out of the more than thirty ability users, the only ones who could fight were her and the Adjutant.

It was one thing when he made her collect crystal cores in the small town, since there weren’t many zombies there and they wouldn’t get surrounded. But the zombies in the city center numbered in the thousands and tens of thousands. Encountering just one could summon a whole horde, and the survival rate was basically zero.

If the Adjutant didn’t have some power at the Sea Base and wasn’t someone to be trifled with, she would have already started beating him up.

Chen Zixuan looked at the others, but they all avoided her gaze, clearly not wanting to be chosen. She smiled with indifference and tossed the problem back to the Adjutant, “Then who will you choose to collect supplies with me?”

The Adjutant pointed at Su Wenwen.

Seeing this, Su Wenwen was rather speechless and found the Adjutant more and more displeasing. She immediately retorted, “Why should I listen to you?”

The Adjutant said, “You can choose not to listen, but when we get to the port, I also have the right not to let you on the ship. It’ll be useless even if Miss Luo pleads for you. Those men are my subordinates; they only listen to my commands.”

Su Wenwen roughly understood why these people only listened to the Adjutant. First, they were afraid the Adjutant wouldn’t let them board the ship. Second, they were afraid of retaliation after entering the Sea Base. Thinking of it this way, if she wanted to get on the ship, she could only compromise for the time being.

“Then I’ll go with you.” Luo Xi stood behind Su Wenwen, her sharp gaze fixed on the Adjutant. “But we only have one pair of hands each, so we have to bring the space ability user.”

The space ability user who was called out went stiff all over and gave a bitter smile. His space ability could only be used to store inanimate objects; he couldn’t fight or carry things on his shoulders. He was particularly useless.

The Adjutant had no reason to refuse this request, so he nodded in agreement. Before setting off, Su Wenwen instructed the people in the van to follow the main group closely and to ignore anything the Adjutant said.

“You’re quite the warm-hearted person,” Chen Zixuan said as they walked down the street. “Why not be a good person to the very end and let me join your team? How about it?”

Su Wenwen and Luo Xi exchanged a smile but didn’t answer the question. The space ability user followed closely behind them. Although he hadn’t seen any zombies, he had already scared himself into a cold sweat.

Chen Zixuan shrugged and said, “Forget it, we can talk about this later. Since we’re going to cooperate on searching for supplies, why don’t we introduce ourselves and understand each other’s abilities so we can coordinate better?”

Luo Xi said, “I’m a mental power ability user.”

Chen Zixuan said, “It seems there are many types of mental power ability users. Can you be more specific?”

Su Wenwen spoke for Luo Xi, “It’s probably similar to manipulating objects. As for me, there’s no need for an introduction. I’m sure the Adjutant has already told you I’m just an ordinary person.” Actually, object manipulation isn’t very specific. To be precise, it’s releasing one’s consciousness to control objects, which naturally allows one to hear distant sounds and see distant things. It was even more monstrous1 than Su Wenwen’s own enhanced five senses.

There was no way Chen Zixuan believed Su Wenwen was just an ordinary person. A real ordinary person should be as anxious as the group in the van, not even daring to blink carelessly. But Su Wenwen’s steps were steady, her aura was restrained, and her spirits were high.

However, since Su Wenwen didn’t say, she naturally wouldn’t dig up the root to ask for the bottom2. Besides, the space ability user was there. If he heard anything, he would most likely run to the Adjutant and tattle.

“Um, I don’t have much combat power, so if we run into zombies later, can you protect me?” the man said with an embarrassed look on his face. “If I die, you won’t be able to move the supplies back either, right?”

“We’ll do our best.”

Su Wenwen didn’t look down on the man, because the zombies now were indeed very hard to kill. Not only were their bones hard, but they were also fast. If there were enough of them, she too would have no choice but to run.

There were no small shops on the street, but there were quite a few restaurants. Inside the transparent glass windows, there were no intact tables or chairs. Some food, which hadn’t been finished, had already gone moldy.

Some moss grew on the white exterior walls, and some weeds had even grown out of the cracks. The trees planted on both sides of the road had also grown much taller, their lush leaves blocking out the sky. Some tree roots had even poked their heads out from under the concrete.

After the red rain, even if the plants weren’t infected, their growth rate was abnormally fast. Their genes had been more or less altered, including the birds in the sky, which were twice as large as the birds seen before.

Perhaps in a few more months, this city would become their paradise. Su Wenwen raised her head to observe the windows of the tall buildings but surprisingly didn’t find a single living person.

Several months had passed since the apocalypse. Ordinary people had long since run out of food. If they went out to find food and encountered zombies, it was basically impossible to escape death. In her previous life, Su Wenwen knew how terrifying the zombies were, so she could only gnaw on grass roots and tree bark nearby. Those days were truly difficult.

“Hey, there’s a wholesale department,” Chen Zixuan said, pointing at the shop ahead, her pace unconsciously quickening. “Hurry up.”

The wholesale department wasn’t large, but the things inside hadn’t been touched. It was likely that when the apocalypse broke out, everyone was only focused on escaping. Later, no one had the ability to come and get the supplies. Over time, many of the boxes in the wholesale department became covered in dust.

Just as the group walked into the wholesale department, the sound of something falling with a thud suddenly came from behind them. Su Wenwen turned her head and her gaze met the crimson, creepy eyes of a zombie.

Before she could react, Chen Zixuan drew her blade and charged forward. A layer of light seemed to flash across the blade as it easily pierced the zombie’s forehead. But before anyone could breathe a sigh of relief, another zombie leaped down from a tall building, smashing heavily onto the street opposite them. Following the zombie’s figure and looking up, dark shadows seemed to be swaying on the tall building.

“Roar!”

As the roar echoed, the dark figures on the tall building fell down one after another, thud thud, one after another, like an inspiring drumbeat. In the blink of an eye, the street was filled with corpses of various sizes.

“Run!”

The group couldn’t be bothered with the supplies and hurriedly ran in the direction of the vehicle convoy. Su Wenwen and Luo Xi’s stamina was beyond ordinary, so they ran the fastest, with Chen Zixuan second. Only the space ability user ran the slowest.

He looked at their backs, so anxious he was drenched in sweat. He wanted to open his mouth to ask them to wait for him, but when he did, all that came out was carbon dioxide he hadn’t had time to exhale.

The zombies’ skeletons were extremely hard; they didn’t even fall apart after falling from more than twenty floors. In a short while, they all stood up, dragging their broken bodies as they chased closely behind the group.

Roar after roar echoed in succession, like a mighty army of a thousand troops and ten thousand horses3. Luo Xi, at the very front, also stopped at this moment. She glanced around, then pulled Su Wenwen, who was behind her, and turned to run into a building.

Chen Zixuan didn’t understand why. After a moment’s hesitation, she followed them in. The space ability user was too terrified and had completely lost the ability to think. He subconsciously followed them into the tall building. Immediately after, even more zombies ran out from the opposite intersection and crowded into the building.

Luo Xi pulled Su Wenwen and climbed the stairs without stopping for a moment. By the time Chen Zixuan reached the third floor, she felt her legs go soft. She opened her mouth to shout, her voice trembling as if she were about to cry, “You guys… wait for me…”

Luo Xi just glanced back at her and said, “Since you can wrap your wind ability around your blade, why not try wrapping it around your body?”

Chen Zixuan had never tried to wrap her ability around her own body. She wanted to try, but the situation was urgent, with zombies biting at her heels. It was very difficult for her to concentrate.

“Ah, wait for me…” The space ability user at the back was the most terrified. His extremely fast heartbeat made him feel oxygen-deprived, and behind him were chaotic screams. He didn’t even dare to look back, only able to rely on a single breath to mechanically move his legs.

Hearing the screams behind her, Chen Zixuan’s whole body trembled. Gritting her teeth, she tried to concentrate, releasing her ability to wrap around her body. At first, the ability dissipated as soon as it touched her body, making it difficult to coalesce. However, on the third try, she succeeded by concentrating the ability on her legs.

Her body instantly became as light as a feather. Taking two or three steps at a time, she was already able to keep up with Su Wenwen and Luo Xi. The space ability user at the very back saw Chen Zixuan disappear around the corner of the stairwell in the blink of an eye. Despair showed in his eyes, and his body felt as if it were under the pressure of ten thousand catties4, causing his steps to become slower and slower.

The hungry roars grew clearer and clearer. He gave a bitter smile and closed his eyes tightly, waiting for the moment he would be devoured. But his collar was suddenly yanked tight. When he opened his eyes, he was dumbfounded.

Su Wenwen had actually turned back. Before he could react, his heavy body was easily lifted by the petite person in front of him and carried up the tall building like a piece of cargo with a whoosh whoosh.

By the time his feet touched the ground, he still hadn’t come back to his senses. He was already on the rooftop. Su Wenwen quickly shut the door and locked it, bracing it with a single hand. Soon, the sound of bang bang impacts could be heard.

He opened his mouth, wanting to say thank you, but Su Wenwen raised her index finger to her lips, signaling for everyone to be quiet. The banging continued. The iron door was being dented, but under Su Wenwen’s hand, it remained completely still.
