I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 44

I Never Say Ambiguous Things to People

Chen Zixuan kept her promise. After sleeping in the nanny car until dawn, she used breakfast time to probe for information. However, the others said they hadn’t seen any ordinary people, but the space ability user who was with the Adjutant from the very beginning might know something.

When the space ability user heard Chen Zixuan asking about this, he glanced at the Adjutant not far away and said only, “The zombies are so powerful. Ordinary people can’t outrun them. They all died long ago.”

Chen Zixuan noticed his fearful gaze toward the Adjutant, so she didn’t press further. She relayed the information she had gathered to Luo Xi and remarked casually, “Why do I feel like this team is a bit unreliable?”

“A hastily formed team where no one knows each other, how could it be reliable?” Luo Xi looked at the sky, which was turning the color of a fish’s pale belly. “Maybe it’ll disband tomorrow, or maybe you’ll be assigned to different teams once you reach the Sea Base.”

Chen Zixuan smiled, her gaze toward Luo Xi holding a deeper meaning. “Hearing you say that, I have no idea what kinds of all sorts of shady characters1 my future teammates will be. But I heard you’re Chief Commander Ji’s daughter, right? Can you pull some strings for me2 and put me with some reliable people?”

“I can’t.”

Seeing that Su Wenwen hadn’t gotten out of the nanny car yet, Luo Xi didn’t want to talk much more with Chen Zixuan. She opened the nanny car door and slipped inside, only to see Su Wenwen sitting in the back seat, leaning against the door, lost in thought.

Ever since encountering Helian Yun, Su Wenwen had been somewhat distracted, her gaze hollow and vacant. This made Luo Xi feel very uncomfortable. Lowering her gaze, she feigned nonchalance and said, “I’m hungry.”

Su Wenwen paused, then casually took a loaf of bread from her spatial backpack. While sleeping during the latter half of the night, her right hand had been pinned underneath her, leaving it a bit tingling and numb, which made her movements seem a little stiff.

“I heard everything you and Chen Zixuan just talked about. I think bringing her into our team is a good choice.”

“Our team?” Luo Xi raised an eyebrow. “Are you saying you want to stay with me from now on?”

Hearing this, Su Wenwen couldn’t help but laugh. She tossed the bread to her and said, “I meant teaming up together from now on. Can you stop saying things that cause misunderstandings?”

“I never say ambiguous things to people.” Luo Xi took Su Wenwen’s somewhat stiff right hand and gently massaged it, her head lowered. Her long lashes veiled all her emotions. “Unless that person is you.”

Su Wenwen stiffened even more, at a bit of a loss.

Before, when Luo Xi’s words had been equivocal3, she could still tell herself she was overthinking things. But this sentence from Luo Xi was no different from a confession, just more roundabout, even leaving some room to maneuver and retreat so as not to pressure Su Wenwen too much.

Outside the nanny car, Helian Yun had gotten out at some point. She looked a bit haggard, clearly not having rested well last night. The corner of Su Wenwen’s eye happened to catch Helian Yun’s figure, and for a moment, she didn’t know how to respond to Luo Xi.

The two sat in the vehicle. Su Wenwen had thought her prolonged silence would make the atmosphere awkward, but it was just the opposite. Luo Xi let out a soft laugh and gently changed the subject. “You did say you were going to feed me every meal.”

“I have to feed you bread too?”

“What do you think?”

A smile appeared in Luo Xi’s eyes, and the beauty mark dangling at the corner of her eye made her look pitifully moving. How could one refuse such a person again and again? Su Wenwen said no more. She opened the bag, took out the fist-sized loaf of bread, and, feeling that Luo Xi’s red lips were thin and small, she tore off a piece and held it to Luo Xi’s lips.

Luo Xi opened her mouth and ate it. A milky fragrance filled the air, growing richer as her tongue curled around it. She smiled, lowered her seat, and lay back to enjoy it. Su Wenwen was like a little maid, even having to pour water to serve Luo Xi.

However, drinking water while half-lying down was a bit difficult for Luo Xi. She had just taken a gulp when a trickle of clear water spilled from the corner of her mouth, sliding down her jaw to her neck. Her thin, silky white shirt was instantly soaked, clinging to her skin and revealing a patch of fair tenderness.

Su Wenwen subconsciously grabbed a tissue and pressed it against the wet collar. The moment her palm pressed just a little tighter, she felt an unusual, scorching heat. Her eyelids trembled slightly, and she lifted her gaze to meet Luo Xi’s.

Those eyes seemed to hold a magical power, countless churning emotions that made it impossible for Su Wenwen to struggle free or look away. The temperature in her palm grew hotter and hotter, until she could no longer tell if it was her own or the person’s beneath it.

Knock knock!

Hearing someone knock on the nanny car door, Su Wenwen pulled her hand back, her face flushing. As soon as she turned her head, she saw Chen Zixuan’s face pressed against the glass. Her normally delicate features were squashed into a lump, creating a bizarrely terrifying sight that gave her a real fright.

“The convoy is about to leave.”

“Got it.” Su Wenwen patted her heart and moved to the driver’s seat. “Next time, please don’t press your face against the glass. It’s pretty scary.”

Chen Zixuan laughed. “You can’t blame me for that. I called out twice, but you two didn’t answer. And this glass is custom-made, so I wouldn’t be able to see you even if you were doing something unspeakable inside.”

Feeling a little guilty, Su Wenwen glanced at Luo Xi, who was still adjusting her collar, and quickly started the engine to follow the convoy.

But with this interruption, she had mostly forgotten about last night’s events, and the ache in her heart lessened.

However, not long after the convoy hit the road, it was stopped by another convoy. Su Wenwen, sitting in her vehicle, had her view blocked by the cars in front. Not knowing what was happening, she could only activate her five senses to investigate.

It turned out the convoy had been stopped by a single vehicle carrying eight survivors. All of them were ordinary people, including a baby of a few months old. They happened to be heading to the Sea Base as well, so they wanted to follow behind the convoy.

The Adjutant didn’t speak. He slowly walked to the front of their van and looked inside through the window. Besides living people, there was nothing. To put it nicely, they wanted to follow the convoy; to put it bluntly, they were out of food, and mooching a meal was their real goal.

“If you want to follow, I can’t stop you.” The Adjutant merely shot a cold glance at the man in the lead before returning to his vehicle without another word.

The convoy set off again, now with an extra car of ordinary people trailing behind the nanny car. Through her rearview mirror, Su Wenwen could see the driver and the woman and child in the passenger seat.

The adults were sallow and emaciated4, and the child was no better. The other people in the back of the van were the same, likely living a life of not knowing where their next meal would come from5.

The driver seemed afraid of being left behind by the convoy, so his eyes were wide open, constantly staring at the nanny car. The child in the car, hungry, was crying “wahh wahh,” but the sound wasn’t loud. They were probably too weak from hunger.

The sound of zombies echoed from the surroundings, and the expressions of the survivors in the van immediately tensed. The woman subconsciously put her finger in the baby’s mouth. The fingertip, which should have been rosy, had already been sucked pale. After a moment, once they confirmed the zombies hadn’t followed, they finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Looking at this group of ordinary people, Su Wenwen thought of herself in her past life. Without an ability, without a system, she had lived cautiously. The slightest sound would make her tense up. She couldn’t even dare to sleep too deeply, and her bad habit of being grumpy upon waking disappeared during that time. All she wanted was to live, no matter how hard it was, she had to live.

The convoy up ahead suddenly stopped.

Chen Zixuan got out with a team of people and, following the sound of the zombies, turned into an alley. Su Wenwen frowned and asked, “That’s strange. There aren’t any zombies blocking the road right now. There’s no need for Chen Zixuan to lead people to kill them, is there?”

“They’re probably after crystal cores,” Luo Xi said. “It’s an order from the Adjutant. As a high-ranking member of the base, he has an obligation to collect crystal cores for the base in advance. But with the base not yet built, it’s hard to say how much these cores are worth. It might just be something they do in passing, worth nothing at all.”

“So you’re saying Chen Zixuan is risking her life collecting crystal cores, just to do all the work for the Adjutant6?” Su Wenwen pouted. “This Adjutant of your mom’s doesn’t seem very trustworthy!”

Luo Xi scoffed. “It was a family arrangement. Even as the Chief Commander, she has her helpless moments. In any case, it’s best to be on guard.”

If this were peacetime, Luo Xi would definitely be caught up in the power struggles of a wealthy family. But Luo Xi had already escaped a family-arranged marriage in her teens through her own strength. With her being so capable, Su Wenwen figured Luo Xi would only ever be the final winner.

Feeling a little hungry, Su Wenwen ate while she waited. The survivors in the car behind them, however, clearly didn’t know what was happening. They were all sweating with anxiety but didn’t dare get out to ask.

She felt a little emotional. If it weren’t for the system, she would probably be just as terrified as them. Thinking of this, she didn’t quite understand why the system had chosen to bind with her. Couldn’t it have bound with someone else to complete the strategy on the villain?

【That wouldn’t do. The villain had a favorable impression of you from the very beginning, so it could only bind to you.】

Su Wenwen froze, her heart pounding violently.

The “beginning” the system spoke of must have been at school. Su Wenwen’s unintentional actions had won Luo Xi’s favor. This was Su Wenwen’s advantage, and also the reason the system chose her.

Su Wenwen couldn’t help but look at Luo Xi.

Luo Xi’s gaze was on the world outside the window. The bright sun shone on her face, casting a translucent, crystalline glow that was incredibly dazzling. Just then, Chen Zixuan returned to the convoy with her team. She was holding a small black bag, which she, as expected, handed over to the Adjutant.

“Chen Zixuan doesn’t seem stupid. Why is she so obedient to the Adjutant?” Su Wenwen wondered.

Luo Xi looked at Su Wenwen with a smiling gaze, the upturned corners of her mouth like those of a fox. “She’s just being pragmatic7. Let the Adjutant suppress her a while longer. Then when the time is right, I’ll give the word and let her join our team.”

Su Wenwen understood at once. Luo Xi not only wanted to recruit Chen Zixuan into her team, but she also wanted to win over her heart. Only a teammate who was willing and would never betray could be trusted.

The method wasn’t sophisticated, but it was effective.

Su Wenwen squinted at her, slightly suspicious about whether Luo Xi had ever used any tricks on her before to make her willingly work herself to the bone for her.

Luo Xi blinked, likely guessing what was on her mind. “The way you’re looking at me is making me a little flustered.”

Su Wenwen let out a “pfft” of laughter. Actually, even if Luo Xi had used tricks on her, it didn’t matter. She would have willingly accepted them and couldn’t bear to complain in the slightest, because she knew Luo Xi understood boundaries, knew when to advance and when to retreat, and that in the end, the one making the choice was always herself.
