Being Protective
Su Wenwen’s pretty smile was so captivating that Luo Xi opened her mouth without the slightest hesitation to eat the food she was fed. Bite after bite, there was no sign of rejection; on the contrary, it seemed like a routine habit, a gesture of familiar, tacit understanding.
Helian Yun had been with Luo Xi for several years and had never seen such a tender side to her. At the company, one had to be careful with every word, let alone eat a meal with her. Only on official business did she ever have the chance to be out with Luo Xi.
So, when Su Wenwen claimed that Luo Xi was used to being fed, Helian Yun didn’t believe it. But watching the back-and-forth between the two of them, she was forced to accept that Luo Xi’s treatment of Su Wenwen was indeed special.
No, Helian Yun still wouldn’t believe it.
A person as proud and iron-fisted as Luo Xi could never develop a special regard for someone in just over two months. It must be that Su Wenwen took advantage of the apocalyptic panic to worm her way in when Luo Xi was vulnerable.
Just wait. As soon as Luo Xi meets someone more formidable, her reliance on Su Wenwen will fade. Thinking this, Helian Yun gnashed her teeth, shot a glance at Su Wenwen, and walked away.
Seeing Helian Yun leave, Su Wenwen tried to hand the bowl and chopsticks back to Luo Xi. Who would have known that Luo Xi wouldn’t take them, the smile on her face carrying a deep, hidden meaning. Like a little fox, she stared at Su Wenwen, her tail swaying.
“I wonder who it was that said I was delicate and was used to someone feeding her. If that person doesn’t feed me, I won’t be able to eat or sleep well…”
“I’ll feed you, fine! If you’ve got the guts, you can wait for me to feed you every single meal!” Su Wenwen could only glare at Luo Xi, but a feeling of exceptional warmth bloomed in her heart.
The moment she finished speaking, Luo Xi let out a soft chuckle. Her laugh was as crisp as a gentle breeze rustling a wind chime, shaking out a subtle melody. Accompanied by the prompt “Blackening Value -5,” the sound became all the more delightful to the ear.
After eating her fill, Luo Xi went to the nanny car to sleep first. Su Wenwen stood guard by the door to prevent anyone with ill intentions from getting close. However, everyone knew Luo Xi was the daughter of Commander-in-Chief Ji, so no one was stupid enough to come looking for trouble.
But just because others wouldn’t trouble Luo Xi didn’t mean they wouldn’t trouble Su Wenwen. Helian Yun stood by the Adjutant and said something to him, causing the Adjutant to glance over at Su Wenwen with a strange expression on his face.
Su Wenwen activated her five senses and heard Helian Yun say, “Everything I said is true. She was my girlfriend before, but we’ve already broken up. Now she’s constantly following President Luo. I’m afraid her motives aren’t pure.”
Hearing Helian Yun say such things about her, even though she was mentally prepared, Su Wenwen couldn’t help but feel a chill in her heart. It was like a knife carving a mark of terror inside her, making her afraid to ever set foot in the realm of relationships again.
She was afraid of repeating the same mistake1, afraid of that suffocating feeling that was worse than death.
Although Su Wenwen had thought about getting revenge on Helian Yun, it was all just talk; she had never actually done anything to her.
After all, in the past, Su Wenwen had genuinely loved Helian Yun. Even after breaking up, she hoped the other would live well, rather than turning into enemies, their hearts unable to break free, unable to let go, cursing each other daily for solace.
After she finished speaking, Helian Yun also went to a car to rest. Her gaze toward Su Wenwen, who was leaning against the nanny car door, was incredibly complex. Unconsciously, she recalled the scene of when they first met.
Back then, Su Wenwen’s face was brimming with smiles, her bright eyes were full of yearning for the future. She was so full of life it struck her right in the heart.
Helian Yun retracted her gaze and frowned slightly, wondering why she was thinking about the past. Since she chose to break up, she shouldn’t have any lingering attachments.
As a member of the Helian family, the partners she chose had always been people of status and position. The reason she had pursued Su Wenwen was merely out of a novelty-seeking mentality. Whether her heart had ever fluttered for her was unimportant.
The silent night was like a cloth to cover one’s shame, hiding everyone and their private thoughts. Only the brilliant, starry sky captured one’s gaze, allowing one’s mind to relax and forget everything.
The bonfire crackled—crackle, crackle—and the dim surroundings made people feel unsafe. Everyone stood watch in front of their vehicles, diligently carrying out their duties.
Just then, the Adjutant beckoned to Su Wenwen.
Su Wenwen hesitated for a moment but still walked over to him. She was considered tall and slender, but in front of the Adjutant, she appeared somewhat petite and delicate.
The Adjutant sized her up. Seeing that her attitude was neither servile nor overbearing, he said with a smile, “Don’t be nervous. Just hold this in your hand.”
The Adjutant opened his palm, revealing a crystal core. Su Wenwen merely glanced at it before shaking her head. “Adjutant, there’s no need to test me. I don’t have an ability.”
“I told you to hold it.” The Adjutant narrowed his eyes, ignoring Su Wenwen’s refusal and speaking in a commanding tone.
Su Wenwen took the crystal core. The Adjutant stared for a few seconds, and seeing no reaction, he took it back. “It seems you really don’t have an ability. In that case, Miss Luo must be the ability user.”
“Why is the Adjutant so sure that if I’m not an ability user, then Luo Xi must be one?” Su Wenwen watched him warily.
“Isn’t it obvious…” The Adjutant gestured toward Su Wenwen’s clothes. “Without the protection of an ability user, you, as an ordinary person, would have died in the mouth of a zombie long ago. How could you still be dressed so immaculately?”
Su Wenwen didn’t reply.
In my past life, I survived for a year. Although it was a bit rough, I could still avoid zombies as long as I was careful.
But judging by the Adjutant’s words, before he met these ability users, did all the ordinary people die?
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Miss Luo is not someone a person like you can cling to. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll leave quietly on your own.”
Su Wenwen chuckled softly. “Unfortunately for you, I’m precisely the type of person who is not good for an easy life, one who knows there are tigers in the mountains, but deliberately heads for those mountains2.”
The Adjutant stared at her for a while. His cold, hard face was cast in large shadows by the firelight, making him look terrifying and grim. Standing before him, Su Wenwen seemed small and fragile, as if she could be crushed at any moment.
She frowned. Although the Adjutant didn’t react, she felt a chill rise from the soles of her feet straight to her heart. She quickly searched her mind for information on the Adjutant’s profile: Forbearing, patient, metal-attribute ability, high defense, high attack, not to be underestimated.
“Let’s hope your courage is as hard as your words.”
After saying this, the Adjutant waved his hand to dismiss her. Su Wenwen returned to the front of the nanny car. As her body relaxed, a deep wave of exhaustion washed over her, and she could only lean half of her body against the vehicle to alleviate the fatigue.
Su Wenwen didn’t plan on telling Luo Xi about this matter. So, when Luo Xi woke up and asked her if anything had happened, Su Wenwen simply said no, then ducked into the nanny car to sleep.
Luo Xi watched as Su Wenwen fell asleep almost immediately, her dark pupils becoming deep and unfathomable. She then glanced toward Helian Yun, who was heading straight for them the moment she got out of her car. It seemed she had been waiting for Luo Xi, her timing perfectly calculated.
“Want to eat a late-night snack?” Helian Yun asked.
Luo Xi glanced at the window of the nanny car. It was specially made, so from the outside, she couldn’t see if Helian Yun’s loud voice had woken Su Wenwen. However, the nanny car’s soundproofing was decent, so she probably hadn’t been disturbed.
She took two steps away and said to Helian Yun behind her, “I know you have an old phone, filled with photos you secretly took of me. For Su Wenwen’s sake, I haven’t said anything harsh to you. But please, don’t harass me anymore. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being impolite.”
Helian Yun froze. She had gone back to the company and searched for that phone for a long time but couldn’t find it. How did it inexplicably end up in Luo Xi’s hands? Seeing the frost on Luo Xi’s face, she said subconsciously, “I’m sorry, I just like you so much…”
“Oh, you like me?” Luo Xi sneered. “So you treated Su Wenwen as a backup3 while you pursued me? Your ‘like’ is pretty cheap.”
Helian Yun’s expression stiffened. Standing before Luo Xi, she stammered “I…” for a long time but couldn’t come up with a suitable excuse. She had nowhere to hide. Any excuse would only make her look more like a clown.
“When feelings are mixed with self-interest, it makes you unable to see what your heart truly wants.” Luo Xi’s eyes suddenly softened as she looked toward a certain spot. “I should thank you for having such heavy avarice. It’s the only reason I was able to obtain the most precious thing in this world.”
Helian Yun’s face turned deathly pale. “What do you mean?”
“You’re a smart person. I don’t need to spell it out. You understand.” After saying this, Luo Xi left Helian Yun and turned back toward the nanny car.
Helian Yun returned to her car, utterly crestfallen. Chen Zixuan was also in the car. Just as she was about to fall asleep, the sound of the door opening woke her. She glanced at Helian Yun and said, “You said you were going to take the second watch. Why are you back?”
“Sorry, I’m not feeling well.”
Chen Zixuan lay back down. “There are plenty of people on watch anyway. If you’re not feeling well, get some proper rest tonight. But don’t you dare disturb my sleep.”
Chen Zixuan got cranky when she woke up. She was prone to getting angry if she didn’t sleep well, and she lacked energy if she slept too little. If it weren’t for this godd#mn apocalypse, she wouldn’t get out of bed before noon.
On this point, she was a bit like Su Wenwen.
Helian Yun remembered how Su Wenwen would always sleep in very late on holidays. If she called too early, she would hear Su Wenwen’s suppressed roar of frustration.
Helian Yun lowered her head, her heart so heavy she could barely breathe. The chaotic thoughts in her mind were like a spiderweb entangling her, and Luo Xi’s words just now had turned her brain into a complete mess.
A bitter taste spread from the corners of her mouth, and for some reason, the scenery before her blurred. Her heart felt hollow, completely empty.
It was full before. I had felt fulfilled. But when did it become empty?
“Are you crying?” Chen Zixuan sat up again, tilting her head to look at her. She then took out a pack of tissues and handed it over, but Helian Yun slapped it away. Chen Zixuan rubbed her hand, not getting angry. “If you don’t want to sleep, then please be so kind as to go cry in another car.”
“I’m not crying. And this is my car. If anyone’s getting out, it’s you.” Helian Yun turned to stare at her. “Get out!”
Chen Zixuan shrugged, opened the door, and got out. She looked around. The other cars were occupied, and quite crowded. She didn’t dare go to the Adjutant’s car, and sleeping on the ground was too creepy. After some thought, she smiled and walked toward the nanny car.
“Young Miss of the Luo family, can you take me in for one night?”
Luo Xi gave her a faint glance. “I can, but you have to answer a question for me.”
“What question?”
“Were there no ordinary people joining your team before?”
“I’m not too clear on that. I joined the team right before you all did, and I’m not familiar with them. I’ve only spoken a few words with the Adjutant. But I can sound them out for you tomorrow.”
