Helian Yun
Su Wenwen never, ever would have thought she would meet Helian Yun again under these circumstances. Her feelings were a complicated mess, stirred into chaos by a thousand different thoughts.
After getting out of the car, Helian Yun glanced at the license plate of the MVP, then saw Su Wenwen in the driver’s seat. A smile of feigned indifference on her lips, she walked toward the front passenger side and knocked on the window.
The window slowly rolled down. Helian Yun was overjoyed to see the face she had longed for day and night; even that indifferent gaze couldn’t affect her mood at this moment.
“President Luo, I’ve finally found you.” Helian Yun lowered her head, looking at her with gentle eyes. “I’m relieved to see you’re okay. Our team is all ability users. Would President Luo like to travel with us?”
“I’m afraid we’re not heading the same way.”
“Then where is President Luo headed?”
“The sea base.”
“What a coincidence, we’re also going to the sea base.” Upon hearing this, the smile on Helian Yun’s face deepened. While speaking with Luo Xi, she didn’t spare Su Wenwen a single glance, as if the two of them had never met.
Su Wenwen’s red lips pressed into a thin line. She forced herself to casually survey the surrounding crowd. Their clothes were relatively clean, and their eyes held a hint of fatigue, but their gazes were bright and full of spirit. Clearly, these people were living well in the apocalypse by relying on their abilities.
I wonder who their leader is, to be able to find so many ability users in such a short time.
Just then, a middle-aged man hurried out of another car and approached Luo Xi. He was wearing a black military uniform, his straight posture bending as he greeted her. “I am the Adjutant to Commander-in-Chief Ji. I’m responsible for bringing ability users back to the sea base. I didn’t expect to run into Miss Luo here.”
Listening to their conversation, Su Wenwen frowned slightly. She had some impression of this Adjutant; he was a minor supporting character who wasn’t written about much. He was always by Ji Qingshuang’s side, and the book always mentioned that whenever he looked at Ji Qingshuang, his gaze was full of tenderness. It was obvious he had a secret crush on her.
But Ji Qingshuang’s mind was focused on the base, so she naturally wouldn’t notice the Adjutant’s feelings. Of course, given Ji Qingshuang’s cold and aloof persona1, she wouldn’t have been interested even if she had noticed.
“Since we’ve met here, I’ll ask Miss Luo to return to the sea base with us.” The man’s face was stern, but his attitude toward Luo Xi was extremely respectful.
Hearing the man say this, Su Wenwen’s heart sank. If they went with them, she would have to face Helian Yun every day, and Helian Yun’s target was glaringly obvious: Luo Xi.
【So now is the perfect time to get revenge on your scummy ex. Making the villain fall in love with the host, right under the scummy ex’s nose… just thinking about it is pretty exciting.】
Hearing this, Su Wenwen’s eyelid twitched. She subconsciously glanced at Luo Xi and happened to see her nod in agreement. Outside the window, Helian Yun’s face bloomed into a smile, which made her feel even more uncomfortable. But the roads around them were blocked, so they couldn’t leave even if they wanted to. Besides, even if they disagreed, the other party could just follow them.
She sighed faintly but, in the end, said nothing in opposition.
The Adjutant smiled and raised a hand, signaling his team to collect the gasoline. Then he bent down again and said to Luo Xi, “I was wondering if Miss Luo is an ability user?”
Luo Xi frowned. “Is being an ability user that important?”
“Miss Luo misunderstands. I’m not trying to pry into your privacy. I just want to know everyone’s abilities in the team so that we can respond in a timely manner if any unexpected situations arise.”
Luo Xi said coldly, “I only agreed to return to the sea base with you. I am not your team member. I have no obligation to tell you.”
The Adjutant’s face stiffened. “I was being presumptuous.”
The car window rolled up, cutting off the outside world’s line of sight. The Adjutant stood by the car door for a moment before leading Helian Yun back to the group. Su Wenwen’s gaze remained fixed on Helian Yun’s back. She was a bit thinner than before, but her complexion was good. Every frown and smile was incredibly charming, making her stand out in the team of several dozen people.
“Are you okay?” Luo Xi asked, looking at her.
Su Wenwen shook her head without a word. She didn’t know when Luo Xi had placed a hand over her own, which were clenched tightly on the steering wheel. Feeling the soft, slender hand on the back of hers, her gaze finally shifted to Luo Xi.
That gentle gaze soothed her. Her tense body gradually relaxed, and her hands loosened their grip on the steering wheel. When she came back to her senses, Su Wenwen noticed that a corner of the steering wheel had been crushed. She said, somewhat embarrassed, “I’m sorry, I broke your car.”
Luo Xi gave a gentle smile. “Then how will you compensate me?”
“Huh?” Su Wenwen was stumped. Her mind spun, but she couldn’t think of what to offer as compensation. “How do you want me to compensate you?”
Luo Xi’s gaze was soft. She simply took Su Wenwen’s wrist and turned her hand over. On it were several faint scratches, caused by gripping the steering wheel too tightly. She sighed helplessly. “It’s just a car, I don’t need you to compensate me. I just need you to remember that nothing and no one in this world is worth you hurting yourself over.”
After hearing these words, a rosy flush dyed Su Wenwen’s bewildered eyes. She pulled her hand back unnaturally. A moment ago, she had been aggravated2 by Helian Yun’s appearance, but now her mind was completely filled with what Luo Xi had just said.
It was full of tender affection. The scorching temperature lingered on the wrist that had been held, not cooling down but instead growing hotter and hotter, while her heartbeat reached an unbelievably rapid state.
Su Wenwen’s throat bobbed. The system’s words from just now echoed in her mind, like a demon whispering in her ear, tempting her, encouraging her to pull Luo Xi down into depravity with her.
In the end, she still flinched away, replying in a small voice, “I know.” Then, seeing that the Adjutant’s team had finished collecting the gasoline, she started the car and followed the convoy out of the gas station.
Along the way, Luo Xi didn’t speak, just stared at the convoy ahead, lost in thought. Su Wenwen couldn’t help but ask her what was on her mind.
“Thirty-two people in total…” Luo Xi mused for a moment. “I just find it a bit strange, that’s all. When the Adjutant was looking for ability users, he must have encountered ordinary people on the road. But from the way they talk, it sounds like all thirty-two of them are ability users.”
“It’s not easy for ordinary people to survive. Perhaps they died on the road.”
“Perhaps. In any case, let’s be careful.”
After talking with Luo Xi, Su Wenwen’s thoughts were no longer on Helian Yun. Instead, she began to carefully observe the team ahead.
They traveled in fits and starts, occasionally encountering zombies. As the daughter of the Commander-in-Chief, Luo Xi was naturally protected by the Adjutant and didn’t need to get out of the car to kill zombies. Su Wenwen, being with Luo Xi, naturally received preferential treatment as well.
Unfortunately, among the thirty-two people, only a woman named Chen Zixuan3 used her ability to kill zombies. Her ability was wind, which she coated her long saber with, making cutting through zombies as easy as cutting through tofu. Moreover, this woman was clearly a trained fighter; her saber techniques were fast and ruthless. She was highly favored by the Adjutant. Apart from the Adjutant and Helian Yun, everyone else had to listen to Chen Zixuan.
All thirty-two have abilities, which means Helian Yun has one too. And she’s also valued by the Adjutant, having stayed in the car this whole time without getting out. This point surprised Su Wenwen.
Luo Xi said, “Chen Zixuan’s ability is quite good. Since she is favored by the Adjutant, it means the others’ abilities are inferior to hers.”
Su Wenwen nodded, feeling that Luo Xi’s analysis made sense. For now, apart from Chen Zixuan, Helian Yun, and the Adjutant, there was no need to waste energy keeping an eye on the others.
At night, the convoy formed a circle and made camp to rest. A fire-ability user lit a bonfire, a water-ability user prepared soup, and a space-ability user produced a large amount of food. They prepared the meal in an orderly fashion4.
Su Wenwen and Luo Xi exchanged a look. They hadn’t expected the ability users the Adjutant found to be so well-rounded. However, most of them didn’t have very strong abilities and could only barely handle ordinary zombies.
“We’ll take turns on watch later,” Luo Xi leaned close to Su Wenwen, whispering in her ear. “I don’t trust them, so one of us has to stay awake.”
The hot breath puffed against her ear, and a continuous tingling numbness spread out, traveling all the way to her scalp, making the distracted Su Wenwen jolt.
She turned to look at her.
The warm glow of the fire was reflected in Luo Xi’s eyes, making them seem like a gurgling brook and rendering her vividly charming.
Su Wenwen felt a fire burning in her throat, painfully thirsty. She moistened her lips and nodded unnaturally.
“President Luo, time to eat.”
Helian Yun stood by the bonfire, waving at Luo Xi. Seeing no reaction from Luo Xi, she brought a bowl and chopsticks over herself. “President Luo, let’s eat!” she said again.
The bowl in Helian Yun’s hand was almost shoved in Luo Xi’s face. From the side, Su Wenwen clearly saw a flash of displeasure in her eyes. But with her good upbringing, she ultimately reined in her emotions and accepted the bowl and chopsticks.
But before Luo Xi could tell her to leave, Helian Yun sat down next to her, saying with a smile, “This curry rice has been kept in a spatial storage, so it hasn’t spoiled. It’s still very fresh. Hurry and try it.”
Su Wenwen just sat there, watching Helian Yun. She recalled how, all those years ago, Helian Yun had used this same method of relentless pestering to pursue her. So many years had passed, yet she hadn’t improved one bit.
【At least she’s taking action. The host is just sitting here watching. Aren’t you upset? Aren’t you angry?】
【Aren’t you worried the villain will be snatched away?】
How could Su Wenwen possibly have such worries? Luo Xi had seen firsthand how shameless Helian Yun could be. The only reason she was holding back and not saying anything was because of her good temper. She just wanted to see how Helian Yun would be snubbed by Luo Xi; there was absolutely no need to get angry.
Helian Yun’s attitude toward Luo Xi was extremely enthusiastic, hotter than the flames in the bonfire, making one feel intensely uncomfortable.
Luo Xi kept her eyes lowered, not replying a single word.
Just as Su Wenwen was about to laugh, she suddenly heard the system’s notification sound: “Blackening Value +5“. The main mission was still ongoing. It was obviously impossible to remain a bystander at a time like this.
Luo Xi held the bowl, completely still.
Helian Yun was at her side, urging her to eat, but then she saw Su Wenwen take the bowl of curry rice away. She immediately put on a cold face and asked, “What are you doing?”
“Feeding her, of course.” Su Wenwen gave a shy smile, picked up a piece of potato, and brought it to Luo Xi’s lips. She didn’t forget to add, “Her… she’s delicate, and she’s used to me feeding her. If I don’t feed her, she refuses to eat.”
