I Don’t Want to Lose You
That night, the two of them rested early.
After getting a full night’s rest, they were up at the crack of dawn the next day.
Wang Kelin wasn’t sure how much grain was in the warehouse, so she only assembled twenty people. Including Su Wenwen and Luo Xi, a total of twenty-three people headed for the destination.
Two trucks were enough. These two trucks had been reinforced and modified; they were enclosed by a layer of iron bars, the windows also had reinforced bars, and a hatch had been cut into the top of the container so people could climb up and observe their surroundings from the roof.
The warehouse Wang Kelin mentioned was behind a supermarket. When the apocalypse broke out, the supermarket hadn’t opened its doors in order to preserve its food, so the warehouse doors had naturally remained shut as well.
Therefore, there were no zombies inside the supermarket or the warehouse, and the food was still intact. The problem, however, was that there were quite a few zombie cats and dogs in the area around the warehouse. This was also the reason Wang Kelin had been hesitant to lead a team to retrieve the goods.
After hearing Wang Kelin’s briefing, Su Wenwen couldn’t help but frown. If these cats and dogs were just ordinary zombies, they might stand a fighting chance. The fear was that some might have special abilities.
Hopefully, their luck would be a little better.
After the vehicles reached their destination, Wang Kelin left ten people to wait in the trucks while the rest disembarked. The gear they carried was all fitted with suppressors1, and they moved forward methodically to scout the area.
Wang Kelin pointed to a building ahead with its rolling shutter door tightly closed, indicating to Su Wenwen that it was the warehouse. To its left and right were many other closed rolling shutter doors, but those were rented by other people, their contents unknown.
Luo Xi, being a mental ability user, sensed something. She raised a hand, signaling everyone to halt. In an instant, everyone’s expression grew tense.
Su Wenwen expanded her five senses and saw a dark figure flash past with a swoosh before stopping on a rooftop. Her expression changed. She looked up at the black zombie cat. Its vertical pupils were crimson red, and its fur was matted together with dried blood. It was emaciated and made no movement, merely watching the crowd below. Yet, its quiet gaze alone made Su Wenwen feel immense pressure.
She had points in both her mental power and agility up to one hundred, yet she could only see the cat’s afterimage. It was clearly a speed-type zombie cat. This was something no ordinary person could fight; no matter how many people came, they would just be throwing their lives away2.
“Wang Kelin, have the others return to the trucks.”
Wang Kelin looked at her, puzzled. Following her gaze, her face changed as well. She quickly gestured for the other soldiers to retreat to the trucks, but they didn’t move, their guns aimed at the zombie cat.
Seeing that they wouldn’t leave, Wang Kelin said in a low voice, “Fall back, now. If you die, you’ll turn into zombies and cause trouble for us.”
The soldiers were all stunned by her words.
The reason they didn’t leave was that they wanted to help, and the food was truly too important. But Wang Kelin’s words struck a chord, making them realize how weak they were. Even with high-powered weapons, they were helpless.
Knowing about Wang Kelin’s special ability, they left a few rifles and slowly retreated toward the trucks. The zombie cat on the roof made no move, but Su Wenwen was so nervous she felt as if something was pressing down on her, her forehead beaded with sweat.
The black cat’s ears twitched. It cocked its head toward the retreating soldiers. Seeing this, Su Wenwen quickly shouted, trying to draw the cat’s attention. But she had barely let out a sound when the cat’s figure vanished in the blink of an eye. The next moment, a blood-curdling scream reached her ears.
The black cat’s lithe body landed on a man’s shoulder. Its sharp claws tore through his fragile neck, and blood spurted out like a fountain, easily taking a life. Before anyone could react, it leaped lightly again, landing on another person’s head. It swayed its tail elegantly, watching as the fallen soldier’s body twisted and began to rise.
Then, a bullet hit the new zombie in the head, killing it.
The black cat turned its head, looked at the gun-wielding Wang Kelin, and let out a disdainful “meow.” It licked its soft paws, cleaning off the remaining blood. The soldier it had pinned underfoot stood frozen, drenched in sweat, not daring to move.
The other soldiers didn’t dare to move either, their eyes fixed on the black cat. Wang Kelin’s face was grim. “What are you waiting for?” she yelled. “Get back to the trucks! We’ll handle this!”
Her roar jolted the soldiers. They cast a pained glance at their dead comrade on the ground and had no choice but to retreat quickly to the vehicles. The black cat’s ears twitched again. It turned its head toward the group of soldiers. Su Wenwen realized the cat had sensed the soldiers’ weakness and was specifically picking them off. She quickly signaled Luo Xi to trap it with her mental power.
The moment the black cat leaped, it seemed to hit something and fell to the ground with a “meow.” Then, immense pressure bore down on it from all directions. It let out another “meow” and, relying on its agile body, dodged left and right. After evading the pressure, it jumped back onto the roof and tilted its head at Luo Xi.
“It’s no good. It’s too fast. I can’t lock onto it,” Luo Xi said, her eyes cold. She was struck by the realization that she still hadn’t trained enough with her mental power.
“I’ll be the bait, then.” With the system on her side, Su Wenwen wasn’t afraid of getting hurt. But Wang Kelin, not knowing she couldn’t be infected, rejected the idea on the spot. “No! If you get injured, you’ll turn into a zombie even if you’re an ability user.”
Su Wenwen had no way to explain. She could only look at Luo Xi with pleading eyes, trying to get her to convince Wang Kelin somehow.
“Its target is me.” Luo Xi didn’t respond to Su Wenwen, instead staring at the black cat with a tense frown. “I have to be the bait.”
“No!” Wang Kelin and Su Wenwen said in unison.
But before they could make a decision, the black cat moved first. Its nimble body vanished before their eyes, its whereabouts unknown.
Su Wenwen could only expand her five senses, searching the surroundings for the slightest movement. She knew Luo Xi was right—the cat was indeed targeting Luo Xi. But it was precisely this knowledge that made Su Wenwen’s heart pound with panic.
She heard the rustle of wind in the grass, the tense breathing from inside the trucks, and a few zombie dogs wandering in the distance. The one thing she couldn’t hear was any sign of the zombie cat. Cold sweat trickled down her forehead. As her stamina was rapidly draining, she quickly used six Clear Teas and two Chicken Wings, then continued to search for any sign of the cat.
A sound flashed past, and when Su Wenwen tried to listen for it, it was gone again. But this faint sound was gradually closing in on the three of them, getting closer and closer. Su Wenwen’s entire body tensed. The moment the faint sound whispered in her ear, she lunged toward Luo Xi without a second thought.
She didn’t know where the black cat was. A sudden pain flared on her back. She turned to look and saw that the cat, having failed in its first strike, had leaped up to attack Wang Kelin. There was no way Wang Kelin could react; in the cat’s eyes, she was standing perfectly still. But the cat didn’t succeed this time either. Its body froze in mid-air, and it began to meow frantically, its elegance gone.
Then, with a sickening crack, the cat’s four limbs twisted and snapped. A thick fluid trickled from the broken parts. Wang Kelin stood there stunned, her mind buzzing as if she had seen a ghost at the bizarre scene before her. Then she threw up.
The black cat was tossed to the ground. It tried to get up, but with its limbs broken, it could only wriggle like a caterpillar, covering itself in filth.
Su Wenwen anxiously helped Luo Xi up, looking her over from top to bottom. “Are you okay?” she asked. She was so terrified that Luo Xi had been hurt that she had completely forgotten about the wound on her own back.
Luo Xi bit her lip and shook her head.
Seeing she was unharmed, Su Wenwen felt relieved. She turned and walked over to the black cat, finishing it off with her military knife. Seeing the attribute points she gained on the system panel, her brow relaxed.
A full five hundred attribute points. Added to what she already had, Su Wenwen could buy another piece of intermediate equipment. But before she could even think about what to buy, the system popped up with another notification: “Blackening Value +5.”
Su Wenwen froze. She turned to look at Luo Xi, whose expression was unreadable. Before she could figure out what was happening, she saw Luo Xi walk over in a few steps and stop just inches in front of her. The familiar, clean fragrance wafted around her nose, making her ask hesitantly, “What’s wrong?”
Luo Xi placed a hand on her shoulder, concealing the emotion in her eyes. “Turn around,” she said faintly.
Su Wenwen obediently turned. Just as she was pondering, a fingertip suddenly touched the wound on her back. The slight pain made her realize she was injured, and she subconsciously used a low-level gauze item.
The several gashes from the cat’s claws healed at a visible rate, like a fast-forwarded scene. The terrifying, torn flesh became smooth as new in just a moment.
Luo Xi’s fingertips lingered on the spot, lost in thought for a long while. Whatever she had been about to say was caught in her throat by the disappearing wound, leaving her with the feeling of punching a fist into cotton3.
“I’m fine,” Su Wenwen said.
“Oh?” Luo Xi withdrew her hand, her tone unreadable. “So you don’t care about your own body? It doesn’t matter if you get hurt protecting me? You ignore your wound and instead go to finish off the black cat first thing?”
“Do you think I’m so weak that I need your protection?”
“Of course you’re not weak, but you don’t have immunity,” Su Wenwen said, turning to face Luo Xi. Seeing her sullen silence, she realized her words sounded like she was blaming Luo Xi for her injury. She hurriedly grabbed her hand and added, “You know my little secret. The pain of my injury is nothing compared to the pain of losing you.”
Wait, that sounded a bit… intimate.
【Ding: Blackening Value -5】
Su Wenwen was silent for a moment. She was afraid that trying to explain would only make things murkier. As long as the meaning got through to Luo Xi, it was fine. It would save her from raising the Blackening Value again the next time she got hurt.
After digging the crystal core out of the black cat’s head, Su Wenwen broke the lock on the rolling shutter door with her bare hands. She opened the warehouse, and inside were goods stacked neatly, filling the space.
Wang Kelin ordered her people to get out of the trucks and move the supplies.
Everything went relatively smoothly from then on, with no more zombie encounters.
Su Wenwen looked at the other closed rolling shutter doors and decided to open them all. A few of the warehouses were empty, but one contained hardware tools, which would be needed for constructing the base, so they were loaded onto the trucks as well. There was also a small warehouse filled with seeds.
They were loaded onto the trucks, too.
