I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 39

I’m Going to J City, Too

“Dad, Mom, I want to go to J City with Luo Xi.”

Just as the two elders were chatting happily, Su Wenwen voiced the thoughts she had been holding in. She had originally expected her parents to object, especially since the cautionary tale of Helian Yun was still fresh in their minds.

“Is that so? Then you should go.”

“We’re old now and can’t handle a long journey, so we won’t go with you.” The two smiled gently, their gazes seeming to see right through Su Wenwen.

Su Wenwen pursed her lips and nodded. They had only just been reunited, and now they had to part again so soon. She silently helped her parents wash the dishes, trying to spend as much time with them as possible and cherish this rare moment of peace and quiet.

Luo Xi wandered aimlessly through the factory. She didn’t blame Uncle Feng in the slightest. She only blamed herself for being so headstrong and for failing to notice that someone had the villainous intent to harm her father. She didn’t even know how long Butler Mu1 had been giving her father the tainted medicine, or when he had even started plotting.

Her mind was a mess. She wished she could go back right this instant and confront Butler Mu. Her father had treated him so generously—he had helped his son get into the best school and even found him a respectable job after graduation. When the butler’s wife fell ill, he had even sent their family doctor to treat her.

After being treated so well, why would he resort to such betrayal and harm?

If Uncle Feng hadn’t accidentally noticed that something was off about Butler Mu, Luo Xi might have remained in the dark for the rest of her life. For that, she was grateful to him.

“Luo Xi, what are you doing here?” Wang Kelin found Luo Xi sitting amidst a pile of sand and gravel. She didn’t notice anything unusual about her friend. “Su Wenwen was just looking for you.”

Luo Xi snapped back to her senses. “Looking for me?”

“Mhm, she said she wants to go to J City with you.”

“Together?” Hearing this, the gloom clouding Luo Xi’s vision instantly scattered. The scorching sun bathed her, yet she didn’t feel its heat at all. Joy flooded her empty heart, causing the corners of her lips to curve upward slightly. “Okay, I understand.”

“It’s a shame I can’t leave here yet, otherwise I’d go back to J City with you two,” Wang Kelin sighed. “Before you go, could you do me a small favor?”

“Yes, what is it?”

“We’re running low on food. As far as I know, there’s a warehouse nearby that hasn’t been destroyed, and its grain supply is still intact. The problem is, we don’t have enough manpower. I can only ask you and Wenwen for help.”

“Alright.”

Although Luo Xi agreed, she still needed to ask for Su Wenwen’s opinion, so she turned to go find her. Just then, she saw a crowd of people gathered together, creating a noisy commotion over something.

“Don’t do anything rash! Put the scissors down!”

Su Wenwen was standing in front of a woman who was holding a pair of scissors to her own neck. Her expression was crazed and her hair was a mess, but one could still see that her otherwise lovely face was twisted in agony.

“But my life is so painful! It’s bad enough you won’t let me die, but why won’t you let me get an abortion? Why did you let those scumbags live? Why? Why…”

Hearing this, Luo Xi roughly understood what had happened and hurried over, with Wang Kelin following close behind. The woman was extremely agitated. At some point, the scissors had pierced a small cut on her neck, and fresh blood was now trickling down.

“I want them dead! If they don’t die, I will!”

The more the woman spoke, the more frantic she became. Wang Kelin frowned and raised her hand, signaling the guards to surround her. But this action only made the woman lose what little reason she had left, and she pressed the scissors deeper into her neck.

Wang Kelin had no choice but to order the guards to back away. She clenched her fists, her jaw tight. “I want to kill them too, but we need the manpower to build our defenses.”

“I don’t want to hear it! I just want them dead!”

“For some people, death is a release. For you, and for them…” Luo Xi said to her, her expression cold. “You shouldn’t want them to die. You should want them to suffer a fate worse than death.”

The woman froze, stunned.

“Wang Kelin is a squad leader, after all. She has to obey orders from above. But the orders were to put them to work as laborers for life, it never said they couldn’t be tortured,” Luo Xi said, approaching the woman step by step. In that moment, an icy aura devoid of any warmth emanated from her, frightening the woman into stillness. The scissors were easily taken from her hand. “You’re a doctor. You of all people should know what part of their bodies those men would find most painful to lose, shouldn’t you?”

The woman lowered her head, seemingly lost in thought.

Seeing that the woman had calmed down, Wang Kelin quickly had a medic treat the wound on her neck. The woman didn’t resist, as if she were brewing something inside, just waiting for the right moment to erupt.

Wang Kelin said to Luo Xi, “Thanks. If something had happened to that doctor, things would have gotten complicated.” If the female doctor had died, other women who had suffered similar fates would have been disheartened. Suppressing this kind of trauma would inevitably lead to problems down the line. Now, thanks to Luo Xi’s words, the doctor would likely take her revenge on those scumbags. All Wang Kelin had to do was turn a blind eye.

Luo Xi shook her head, her gaze shifting to Su Wenwen, who was standing quietly to the side. She had her head down and hadn’t said a word, and Luo Xi wondered what she was thinking.

Wang Kelin told Su Wenwen about the mission to retrieve grain from the warehouse, hoping for her help. Su Wenwen agreed without hesitation and, in doing so, accepted a system side quest.

【Assist Female Supporting Character with Grain Transport: The more grain you transport, the greater the reward. (This mission has no time limit.)】

The female doctor went back to her room to rest, and the rest of the crowd gradually dispersed. However, the commotion had attracted a few zombies, which were now loitering outside the perimeter wall. Wang Kelin’s ability had become much more proficient. Raising a silenced pistol, she fired. The bullets struck the same spot repeatedly without deviation, and she dealt with the zombies without much effort.

Afterward, she sent a team out to dig out the crystal cores and smear zombie blood on the walls to mask the scent of the living within.

Wang Kelin shot Su Wenwen a smug look, her dashing, tomboyish charm making her look especially cool. “So? Isn’t my ability incredible?”

Before Su Wenwen could reply, Luo Xi cut in, “It’s decent enough. Without a gun, your ability is useless.”

The corner of Wang Kelin’s mouth twitched. “It doesn’t have to be a gun. Throwing knives or something similar might work. I’ll try it out once I get more used to my ability.”

“Throwing knives are probably harder for you to get than a gun, aren’t they?” Luo Xi’s voice was chilly as she threw a cool glance at Wang Kelin.

It was true. In this day and age, where would you even find throwing knives? Wang Kelin was left speechless, a little ticked off. “Luo Xi, are we still best friends or not?”

“What do you think?”

Listening to their bickering, Su Wenwen’s heart was knotted with worry. That five-point blackening value still hadn’t gone down, and she couldn’t relax for a second.

“What is with you today? Why do you keep snapping at me? Are you in a bad mood?” Wang Kelin asked, taking a breath.

Hearing this, Su Wenwen finally noticed that Luo Xi did seem particularly different today. When she was counseling the female doctor, she had felt so cold, as if she had lost her familiar gentleness. She felt like a stranger.

Wang Kelin added, “If you’re in a bad mood, just tell us. If you can’t even talk to us, then you deserve to suffer in silence.”

That was a bit too blunt. Su Wenwen shot Wang Kelin a glare, then took Luo Xi’s somewhat cold hand. “Whatever it is, just say it. Don’t keep it bottled up, okay?”

Luo Xi instinctively squeezed Su Wenwen’s warm hand. Seeing the deep worry in her eyes, she sighed internally. She took out the medicine and briefly explained what Uncle Feng had told her. She didn’t want to scare Su Wenwen, so she maintained a calm expression as she spoke, but her heart felt heavy and suppressed.

Su Wenwen listened and then immediately asked her system what was going on. The system only replied: Side-story plot. Explore on your own.

The reply confirmed Su Wenwen’s suspicion that there was something strange about the death of Luo Xi’s father; otherwise, there wouldn’t be a side story. She pondered for a moment, then asked Wang Kelin, “You were at the banquet back then, right? Did you notice anything strange about Butler Lin2?”

Wang Kelin frowned, searching her memory. Although the incident had happened several years ago, it had left a deep impression, so it wasn’t hard to recall.

“Looking back, Butler Lin was acting a bit strange. I remember when Uncle Luo clutched his heart and collapsed, Butler Lin just stood there. He didn’t immediately move to help. It was only when Uncle Luo reached out and called his name that he gave him the medicine. Later, when Uncle Luo was carried back to his room, Butler Lin should have stayed by his side, but he didn’t. He disappeared for a while. That was probably when he went to destroy the medicine he had swapped.”

Su Wenwen felt the hand in hers tighten. It was obvious that Luo Xi was far from calm. But to keep others from worrying, she kept her expression taut, not betraying a single emotion. It made Su Wenwen’s heart ache for her, but she didn’t know how to share her burden.

“But it’s been so long, and now with the apocalypse, any evidence is long gone. Even if you confront Butler Lin, he’ll never admit it,” Wang Kelin added.

“I know.” Luo Xi pursed her lips. Her face looked pale under the harsh sun, and the beauty mark at the corner of her eye made her look utterly pitiful, like a flower that could be snapped at any moment.

Just reading about it in the novel, Su Wenwen never knew how deep Luo Xi’s feelings for her parents were. But if it were her, she would probably want to take a knife and dice the culprit into a thousand pieces.

Su Wenwen looked up at Luo Xi, fighting the urge to pull her into a comforting hug. She held back and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll go to J City with you. If that butler of yours won’t confess, I’ll beat him until he does.”

A faint mist swirled in Luo Xi’s eyes. She glanced at Su Wenwen, her gaze like that of a teasing sprite, and said softly, “Are you sure you want to leave aunt and uncle here to come to J City with me?”

Looking in Luo Xi’s eyes, Su Wenwen saw her own resolute expression reflected back. “Mhm. No matter where you go, I’m going with you.”

Luo Xi smiled, an inextricable warmth blooming in her eyes. The pressure in her hand eased slightly. “Okay.”

【Ding: Blackening Value -5】

Hearing the system’s notification, Su Wenwen smiled as well, releasing a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. In that moment, she didn’t notice that their simply held hands had become an intimate, ten-fingered grip. Wang Kelin’s gaze shifted back and forth between the two of them. She seemed to have realized something. Finally, with a helpless sigh, she quietly slipped away.
