It’s Okay, I’ll Go Alone
Sisi’s sister had a special status, and a private plane had already taken her to be with her sister half a month ago. As for the survivor with the antibody, that was, naturally, the male lead.
According to the current timeline, the male and female leads should be developing the antidote right now, and their relationship was likely heating up fast.
Once the antidote was developed, Su Wenwen would be able to unbind from Luo Xi. At this thought, her eyelids lowered, her thick lashes casting a shadow that hid the chaotic emotions in her eyes.
“You must be hungry. I’ll take you to the cafeteria to eat.”
Wang Kelin led the group to the cafeteria. It was noon, and the place was crowded with people having their meals. It was a bit cramped, but there was no clamor. Everyone spoke in hushed tones, trying their best to avoid making too much noise.
A few gazes lingered on Su Wenwen and Luo Xi. Some people recognized them and waved a greeting, to which Su Wenwen responded with a smiling wave of her own.
“Miss Luo?” A middle-aged man in work clothes, who hadn’t even finished his meal, rushed over. He sized up Luo Xi, his eyes filled with delight. “It really is you. I never thought I’d run into you here.”
Luo Xi gave a faint nod. “Uncle Feng, there’s no need to be so formal. Just call me Luo Xi.”
This man, Uncle Feng, was the lead engineer. His skills were top-notch; he was the one who had led the construction of the wind turbines on the edge of the factory. He was well-respected in the Luo family and, having worked for them for twenty years, had practically watched Luo Xi grow up.
After getting their food, the group sat down at Uncle Feng’s table. Uncle Feng was clearly happy to see Luo Xi, but she wore no smile, and an indescribable sense of detachment radiated from her.
This version of Luo Xi felt alien to Su Wenwen, but Uncle Feng was apparently used to her coldness and didn’t seem uncomfortable at all.
Mother Su leaned closer to Su Wenwen. “Why do I get the feeling that Luo Xi isn’t very happy?”
Not happy? But why?
“Luo Xi, your brother is very worried about you. Do you want to use the satellite phone to let him know you’re safe?” Uncle Feng asked cautiously, studying Luo Xi’s expression.
Luo Xi nodded, then lowered her head to eat. But out of the corner of her eye, she saw Su Wenwen shift her seat to sit next to Wang Kelin, their heads together as they whispered, looking very intimate.
Her brow furrowed. She sent out a tendril of her mental power, and the two’s conversation became crystal clear.
“What do you mean, ‘she suddenly changed’?” Wang Kelin looked at Su Wenwen strangely. “Luo Xi has always been like this. But seeing Uncle Feng probably reminded her of her father’s death.”
“Uncle Feng was at the banquet, too. He witnessed the whole thing. He knows she blames herself, and he’s been the one trying to persuade Luo Xi to go home for the past few years. She’s probably ignoring him because she’s afraid of what he might say.”
“Sigh, but Uncle Feng doesn’t mean any harm. He just feels sorry for Luo Xi. When the apocalypse first broke out, none of his family survived…”
Hearing this, Luo Xi looked up at the smiling Uncle Feng. “Uncle Feng, what about your family?”
Uncle Feng’s face stiffened. After a long moment, his previously straight back suddenly slumped. His gaze went vacant, and he lowered his head dejectedly, seeming to have aged several years in an instant.
Seeing this, Luo Xi understood. Her red lips pressed into a thin line. Though she had only met Uncle Feng’s wife and son a few times, they had left a good impression on her. The son was quiet, gentle, and shy; the wife was formidable but reasonable.
Uncle Feng cherished his family. He always went home on time to cook dinner, and every time he spoke of his wife and son, his face would light up with happiness.
Luo Xi knew better than anyone how devastating the death of family was, yet he was still forcing himself to endure his own bitterness to comfort her.
Luo Xi’s grip on her chopsticks tightened. “Uncle Feng, do you know where my mother is now?”
Hearing this, Uncle Feng seemed to regain his spirit. He smiled and said, “Commander Ji is at the offshore base near J City. If you want to go, we can have them send a helicopter over.”
Su Wenwen overheard this and looked up at Uncle Feng, quickly interjecting, “A few days ago on the road, we saw zombie bats attack several fighter jets. There were no survivors.”
Her words, like a stone dropped into a calm lake, sent out shocking waves. Compared to the grim battles fought against zombies on land, the sky had been the one place for a clean escape. Now that was gone too. No matter how powerful a fighter jet was, it could never match the freedom of movement of a zombie bat.
“How could this be…” Wang Kelin muttered. “Those fighter jets were sent by Commander Ji to eliminate the zombies. I can’t believe they failed. Her side has probably already received the news. They likely won’t be sending any helicopters.”
“If you drive to J City, it will take at least a month,” Wang Kelin said, looking at Luo Xi. “If you decide to go, I’ll assign more people to escort you.”
Luo Xi lowered her head to her food again. “No need. A larger group will only attract more zombies. Besides, I haven’t decided if I’m going back yet.”
Wang Kelin nodded. She understood Luo Xi’s personality—she was decisive and her word was final—so she said no more.
After lunch, Father and Mother Su couldn’t sit still and went to the back kitchen to help with washing dishes and cleaning. Besides, everyone in the base had a job, and they felt embarrassed being idle.
Uncle Feng seemed to have more to say to Luo Xi, hesitating as if he wanted to speak but couldn’t find the words. Su Wenwen and Wang Kelin took the hint and excused themselves to go check on the progress of the defense construction outside.
“Come with me. There’s something I’ve been meaning to give you for years,” Uncle Feng sighed, finally making up his mind and standing up.
Luo Xi rose and followed him. His figure looked desolate and lonely from behind. He had lost a lot of weight, and his once-straight shoulders now drooped.
After a series of twists and turns, they arrived at Uncle Feng’s room. It was a four-person dorm, and he slept on the bottom bunk on the east side. He knelt by the bed and pulled out a large box from underneath it. Inside were his clothes, photos of his wife and son, and a small wooden box.
Uncle Feng looked at a photo, his hand stroking it, his eyes filled with pain and longing. Then, gritting his teeth, he opened the small wooden box next to it. Inside was a single, small pill.
Luo Xi’s brow furrowed slightly.
“This… I found this in the restroom,” Uncle Feng said, choosing his words carefully. “I found it on the day of your eighteenth birthday. The person who poured out the medicine was Butler Mu.”
Luo Xi’s expression changed drastically at his words.
Butler Mu had been exclusively in charge of Father Luo’s diet and daily life, including the heart medication he normally took. Before the banquet began, Father Luo had already taken his medicine. Not long after the party started, he was so angered by the broken engagement that his heart condition relapsed. Butler Mu helped him take his medicine again, but Father Luo still didn’t make it. He died.
As the scene descended into chaos, Uncle Feng noticed Butler Mu’s panicked expression and paid closer attention. He followed the butler into the restroom and personally saw him empty a bottle of heart medication into the toilet and flush it.
After Butler Mu left, he went in to check and found a single pill left in the corner, which he tucked into his pocket.
“I felt that Old Mr. Luo’s death was very suspicious at the time. But even if I knew, I didn’t dare say anything. I’m sorry…”
The person who dared to kill Father Luo had to be someone of status, a vicious and utterly ruthless person. Uncle Feng had a wife and son, no power or influence. After weighing the pros and cons, he could only carefully hide the pill and pretend he knew nothing.
Who could have known that a few years later, the apocalypse would break out? His wife and son were devoured by zombies. He never even saw their bodies, only hearing their blood-curdling screams over the phone—a sound that tore his very soul to pieces, yet he was helpless.
A grown man, Uncle Feng wept, his face streaked with tears1, repeatedly apologizing to Luo Xi. His constant urging for her to go home was, in its own way, an attempt to atone for his own sins.
“Thank you,” Luo Xi said.
Uncle Feng stared at her, stunned. Even after hearing this shocking news, Luo Xi’s face was calm, without a trace of anger. It was so startling it made one think Father Luo’s death had nothing to do with her.
“I will investigate this matter slowly. Uncle Feng… don’t blame yourself. This isn’t your fault. Because if it were me, I probably wouldn’t have said anything either.” Luo Xi accepted the pill. “And, my condolences.”
When Luo Xi left the room, her expression was terrifyingly dark. People passing by couldn’t help but shiver, daring only a single glance before hurrying away.
She took the pill to several women who had been doctors, only to learn that it was an antidepressant. If taken by someone with a heart condition, it could easily lead to fatal heart failure, and the emotional distress would have only intensified the burden on the heart.
Hearing this, Luo Xi’s gaze flickered.
After wandering around for a bit, Su Wenwen saw Luo Xi’s figure. Just as she was about to approach her, she heard the system’s notification tone.

Hearing this, Su Wenwen rushed to Luo Xi’s side. She saw a slightly moldy pill lying in Luo Xi’s palm, then looked up at her tense face. “You can’t eat this pill, right?”
Luo Xi snapped back to reality. She put the pill away, her gaze softening considerably as she looked at Su Wenwen. “Mm, I know I can’t eat it.”
Su Wenwen could tell that Luo Xi didn’t want to talk about it, but because of her mission, she had no choice but to press on. “What are you doing with a moldy pill?”
“It’s nothing. I’m planning to go to J City in a few days.”
“Hey, I’ll go with you.”
“Are you going to leave your mom and dad here?” Luo Xi offered a small smile. “It’s okay. I can go to J City alone.”
Hearing Luo Xi say this, Su Wenwen fell silent.
Putting aside how dangerous the trip to J City was, if she were to bring her parents along, the arduous journey would be too much for their bodies. They wouldn’t be able to handle the physical toll or the sleepless nights.
But leaving them behind alone? Su Wenwen couldn’t rest easy with that either.
Watching Luo Xi’s retreating back, a helpless sigh escaped her chest. Su Wenwen didn’t follow. Instead, she turned and found her parents in the kitchen. They had already washed a large portion of the dishes and were laughing and chatting with others as they worked.
They seemed to be in very good spirits.
“Look, that’s my daughter. Pretty, isn’t she!”
“So your daughter is Wenwen! She really is pretty, just as pretty as you.” The other person’s words made Mother Su beam with delight.
Su Wenwen quietly walked over.
