What Do You Think?
The next evening, the car pulled into a small motel near a gas station. The establishment was not large and was located in a remote area. Its tightly shut door was plastered with various small notes, and the sign hanging above it was red—clearly not a proper motel.
However, they had used up their previously stored gasoline. Furthermore, Su Wenwen’s parents were getting on in years; after a full day of driving yesterday and a night spent sleeping in the car, their bodies were struggling to cope. They had no choice but to make do and spend the night here.
A remote motel had its advantages, though. There were few zombies around. Also, since the apocalypse had broken out in the morning, a place like this, which likely did most of its business late at night, probably had its interior intact and wouldn’t reek of blood.
Su Wenwen’s current strength was comparable to a hydraulic clamp. With a forceful twist of her hands, she broke the lock. Witnessing this, Father and Mother Su were both shocked and delighted.
“Nannan, keep a lower profile from now on,” Mother Su said as she followed them into the motel. “I’m worried that bad people might take notice of you.”
“Don’t worry, there’s no one else around.”
After closing the main door, Su Wenwen switched on a flashlight. The beam illuminated a cramped front desk, behind which lay rows of rooms. She opened one at random and found the interior to be very simply furnished.
A bed, an air conditioner, and walls painted white. The window was small and covered by a curtain. The bedsheets, however, looked clean, a sign that they were washed regularly. But Su Wenwen still felt they were dirty, so she tossed the bedding onto the floor and laid her own sleeping bags out on the bed.
Once her parents were settled, Su Wenwen and Luo Xi left the room. They found some furniture and used it to block the hallway outside the door to prevent any zombies from wandering in.
As young people, they were much hardier. They returned to the car to rest, taking turns keeping watch at the gate.
Luo Xi had already slept for an entire afternoon, so she took the first half of the night’s watch. Su Wenwen reclined the passenger seat and lay back, closing her eyes to coax herself toward sleep.
The warm night breeze drifted through the open car window, brushing against her face and drawing out a light sheen of sweat. The moonlight cast a silver glimmer upon it, making it look crystal clear.
Luo Xi leaned against her seat, her gaze fixed unblinkingly on Su Wenwen. Her eyes traveled slowly from Su Wenwen’s full forehead down to her long eyelashes, then to the bridge of her nose, and finally rested on her alluring red lips, which appeared hazy in the moonlight, making them all the more captivating.
Feeling the intense gaze, Su Wenwen opened her eyes and met Luo Xi’s, which seemed to hold a magical power. Her heart began to pound furiously. She subconsciously clenched her fists and pretended to be unfazed as she asked, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“What do you think?” Luo Xi’s bright eyes narrowed slightly. She leaned in, and under Su Wenwen’s stunned gaze, her lips curled into a meaningful smile.
Su Wenwen froze, staring at the exquisite face just inches from her own. A cool, elegant fragrance wafted to her nose, like a feather tracing a line over her heart. Though nothing had happened, the strength drained from her clenched fists, and they gradually relaxed.
The rhetorical question was clearly loaded. A strange heat rose in Su Wenwen’s cheeks, and she said shyly, “How would I know?”
In her heart, she had a vague feeling that Luo Xi’s attitude toward her was a little different, but the thought made her anxious and she refused to dwell on it. Instead, she shut her eyes, turned over, and presented her back to Luo Xi, avoiding that disquieting gaze.
Luo Xi watched her for a moment before sitting up straight again. Her eyes scanned the unsettling scenery outside the car window, her fingertips tapping a light, irregular rhythm on the steering wheel as she was lost in thought.
As the morning sun rose, it brought a wave of heat that washed over the land, so intense it seemed to distort the landscape.
Mother and Father Su woke up and returned to the car. The two young women then drove toward the gas station to get fuel. The moment they saw the zombies milling about outside, they exchanged a look and, with a silent, mutual understanding, got out of the car.
Father and Mother Su glanced at each other, watching nervously from inside the vehicle as the two women weaved effortlessly through the horde of zombies. Their teamwork was seamless. Although Luo Xi mostly stood to one side, occasionally lending a hand, it was always at a critical moment to help Su Wenwen out of a jam.
Meanwhile, Su Wenwen’s strength was immense. She could easily lift a zombie and fling it through the air, all while keeping Luo Xi safely shielded behind her.
“Ah, she and Nannan are a great match,” Mother Su’s eyes lit up, her nervousness easing considerably.
Father Su nodded. “She’s indeed a good kid.”
Dealing with these common zombies wasn’t very difficult. Luo Xi grabbed a canister and went to a self-service pump to get fuel. Fortunately, this gas station could run on solar power, so getting gasoline wasn’t a problem.
Father and Mother Su then saw Su Wenwen crouching on the ground, doing something they couldn’t quite make out. After rummaging through a zombie’s head, she pulled out a red, gem-like object.
Su Wenwen had mentioned this thing before. It was probably a Crystal Core, which was very useful for Ability Users They watched as Su Wenwen wiped the Crystal Core clean and obediently handed it over to Luo Xi. Seeing this, Mother Su turned to her husband and said, “Doesn’t that look just like you handing your salary over to me?”
Father Su nodded in agreement.
Mother Su smiled knowingly. When Su Wenwen and Luo Xi returned, she quickly handed them water. Luo Xi thanked her before accepting it, while Su Wenwen simply took the bottle and started drinking.
Suddenly, a roaring sound filled the sky.
Looking up, they saw several fighter jets flying closer from the distance. Strange black dots seemed to be stuck all over the planes. Su Wenwen squinted and gasped. It was a dense swarm of zombie bats.
They were enormous, with sharp fangs protruding from their mouths and long ears. Using the claws on their wings and feet, they clung tightly to the tough fuselage of the jets. No matter how the pilots banked or rolled, they couldn’t shake them off.
It was the same for the other jets. Despite shaking violently for a long time, they couldn’t dislodge the creatures. Soon, the metal skin was punctured with holes and the cockpit glass was shattered. The people inside fired their guns while hitting the eject button.
The pilots were shot out, but before their parachutes could even open, they were torn limb from limb in mid-air by the zombie bats. Blood rained down like a mist. A fighter jet flew over their car and plummeted straight down in the distance. First came a burst of fiery light, followed by a deafening explosion.
The other fighter jets also fell one after another, blooming like red fireworks across the horizon. After a long while, the surroundings returned to a tense quiet, with only pillars of black smoke rising into the sky, refusing to dissipate.
Judging by the planes’ flight path, they were likely headed for the air-raid shelter. There was a horde of zombies there, so they were probably planning an air strike, never expecting to encounter zombie bats.
Normally, bats wouldn’t come out during the day, but now that they were zombies, they had no such constraints. Furthermore, the flight speed and hearing of zombie bats were greatly enhanced. It didn’t matter what kind of fighter jet you had. If you were unlucky enough to run into a zombie bat with special abilities, even an Ability User would have a hard time fighting it.
“Looks like the sky isn’t safe anymore,” Su Wenwen said. “Let’s get out of here, quickly!”
Luo Xi nodded, and they promptly drove away.
After three days of stop-and-go travel, they finally returned to the temporary defensive base built by Wang Kelin. Su Wenwen looked up at the few new wind turbines inside the walls and felt a deep sense of shock.
It had only been half a month, yet they had already built wind turbines. Under normal circumstances, Su Wenwen would have thought it possible, but to construct them in such a short time during the apocalypse was truly incredible.
There were many new faces and armed troops inside the chemical plant, all busy reinforcing the outer walls to make the defenses even stronger. Luo Xi parked the car to the side, and soon an armed man and woman ran over, telling them to get out for inspection.
Su Wenwen knew the rules and obediently exited the car. She scanned the expanded compound but didn’t see Wang Kelin.
The fully-armed woman recognized Su Wenwen and Luo Xi. She said something to the man beside her, then used her walkie-talkie to notify Wang Kelin. A moment later, Su Wenwen saw Wang Kelin running over, looking weary but with an irrepressible smile on her face.
“I didn’t expect to see you again so soon.”
Wang Kelin’s eyes were filled with joy. After introducing herself to Father and Mother Su, she led them inside, skipping the tedious inspection process. She arranged a room for them with two bunk beds and began to recount what had happened over the past half-month.
The workers outside were all engineers from the Luo family, elites from the second-tier team. It was clear the Luo family was taking the construction of this defensive base very seriously. Additionally, Wang Kelin had spread the news that people would turn into zombies upon death.
“I received a reply from the Commander-in-Chief. She said someone among the survivors has developed an antibody. The research team is already working at full capacity to develop an antibody serum. I believe this problem of people turning after death will be resolved soon.”
Su Wenwen pondered, “Commander-in-Chief?”
Wang Kelin nodded. She let out a sigh and glanced at Luo Xi. “Yes. The leadership up top has been fractured, so the military has disintegrated. Survivors are choosing capable individuals to lead their own teams. The person in charge of commanding the southern forces has the surname Ji.1”
Su Wenwen wasn’t surprised at all.
Commander Ji was Luo Xi’s mother.
According to the book’s setting, she was a serious, unsmiling woman who was both very intelligent and beautiful. Even in her forties, she had many admirers. Unfortunately, she had Old Master Luo holding her back at home, subjecting her to constant suppression and exclusion. To be elected as the Southern Commander-in-Chief under such circumstances was no small feat.
“Also, regarding that batch of survivors you brought in before, after I learned the truth, I really wanted to kill all those men. But I couldn’t. I had them all sent to the construction site as laborers,” Wang Kelin said, her gaze tinged with apology. “Sorry. Although I was furious, I…”
Su Wenwen shook her head. “It’s fine. I understand.”
Commander Ji’s management of her troops was extremely strict. One of the rules was a ban on unauthorized killing. This was partly to prevent people from turning into zombies, and partly to prevent the breakdown of discipline from retaliatory killings.
Those who committed offenses were put in chains and dispatched to the most dangerous areas to perform hard labor. In the early stages of building a base, even a slightly loud noise could attract countless zombie attacks, making the mortality rate incredibly high.
“As for those women, some of them were doctors before. We were in desperate need of doctors, so we gave them some preferential treatment, just having them treat patients. But…” Wang Kelin trailed off, hesitating.
Su Wenwen asked, “But what?”
Hearing that these people could start over made Su Wenwen happy. However, one of them was pregnant. She had only found out a few days ago and had been trying to find a way to terminate the pregnancy. But this was the apocalypse, and medical facilities were limited. Having an abortion now was tantamount to sending the woman on a trip through the gates of hell.
If her luck was bad, she might not come back.
