Will You Blame Me?
Su Wenwen’s mother had always placed a great deal of importance on kinship; otherwise, she would never have been bullied by her brother to such an extent. Su Wenwen had originally thought she would have to stage the bitter flesh scheme1 a few more times before her mother would find the heart to abandon her uncle’s family. She hadn’t expected things to progress so smoothly.
The group got into the minivan they had hidden earlier and decided to head back to find Wang Kelin first.
In the back seat, Mother Su stared silently out the window, lost in thought. Father Su, on the other hand, was too stunned by the scenery outside to speak.
The once-lively streets were now dead silent, so desolate and dilapidated that it felt as if this disaster would never end.
“Dad, Mom, if you’re hungry, feel free to grab anything from the car.”
Father Su snapped back to reality. Knowing his wife was in a low mood, he took some food and handed it to her, saying, “What’s done is done. Don’t overthink it. Have something to eat first.”
Mother Su turned her head but didn’t take the food. Instead, she said, “This car is quite well-stocked. Nannan, did you and Luo Xi deliberately put on a bitter flesh scheme for me to see?”
Though phrased as a question, her tone was certain.
Su Wenwen hadn’t expected to be found out so quickly. Fearing her mother might regret her decision and want to go back, she remained silent.
“Auntie, please don’t be angry. This was all my idea,” Luo Xi said softly, shouldering all the responsibility.
Su Wenwen frowned. Just as she was about to explain, she saw Luo Xi cast a reassuring glance her way, as warm as the sun, which made her freeze for a moment.
“I’m not angry…” Mother Su sighed deeply. She was angry at her own uselessness, for forcing Su Wenwen to resort to a plan that involved hurting herself. That was her precious daughter; even a slight emotional wound felt like a fatal blow, yet because of Qi Wenhao’s family, she had been hurt more than once or twice.
And then there was Father Su. If he didn’t love her to his very core, he wouldn’t have tolerated it time and again. She was filled with regret. Why couldn’t she have made a choice sooner? If she had, her husband and daughter wouldn’t have had to suffer in silence for so many years.
“Are you really not angry?” Su Wenwen asked.
Hearing this, Mother Su managed a smile, though it was tinged with sorrow. “How could Mom ever be angry at you? Silly Nannan, don’t ever do something like this again.”
“Alright, there won’t be a next time.”
With everything out in the open, everyone felt a great sense of relief. They ate when they were hungry, and whenever they looked up, they were met with a landscape of ruin, which possessed a unique, desolate beauty.
The roar of cars was gone from the streets, and even the air was filled with a charming, fresh fragrance. Birds had come out to play, perching on branches or car roofs. Some had even built nests inside abandoned vehicles.
The destruction of the city had no impact on their lives; on the contrary, it had given them more space to thrive.
Luo Xi drove with a steady hand, and the ride was smooth. But just then, she suddenly yanked the steering wheel, veering sharply off their original route. Father and Mother Su, caught off guard, tilted to the side. Fortunately, Father Su reacted quickly and held his wife steady.
Su Wenwen’s agility was now maxed out, and her body responded instantly. She grabbed the handle on the ceiling of the car, her body pulled by inertia as if by a giant hand, which only released its grip after a moment.
Mother Su asked, “What’s wrong, Xiao Xi?”
Luo Xi’s brows were tightly furrowed, and she didn’t say a word.
Su Wenwen sensed something was amiss. She immediately extended her five senses and heard the chaotic sound of footsteps behind the vehicle. Looking back, she saw a horde of zombies chasing a group of survivors. It was like a mountain collapsing or a sea churning, a tidal wave of bodies. The scene was a maelstrom of flying flesh and gore, and the shrill screams assaulted the optic nerves.
Someone saw their minivan and kept shouting, “Save us…!” But with only two legs, they couldn’t possibly catch up to the vehicle. The zombies, however, ran much faster than them, and in a short while, half the group was pounced upon and dragged down.
One woman, holding a small child, knew she couldn’t escape. Crying, she hugged her child tightly, never letting go even as she was bitten to death and her last breath left her. The faces of Mother and Father Su turned ashen white, as if coated in a layer of paint, their bodies frozen and stiff.
It was the first time the elderly couple had witnessed such a scene. They unconsciously clenched their hands, which began to tremble. They recognized those survivors. Some were fellow villagers, some were cashiers from the supermarket, and there was even a village official.
“Didn’t they go to the air-raid shelter for refuge?” Mother Su’s voice trembled slightly. “How did it come to this?”
So they were all villagers who went to the shelter. Su Wenwen’s face darkened. As she suspected, the initial defensive points had failed. It was likely the same in other places. She had no idea if Wang Kelin was safe.
However, I did give Wang Kelin a heads-up, she thought. The situation might not be that bad.
Luo Xi suddenly slammed on the brakes. The screeching sound cut through the air. After the car stopped, it rapidly reversed and executed a beautiful turn. The few zombie pigs that had been blocking the road stood like a clumsy wall, staring blankly as the minivan sped toward the zombie horde.
But there was another intersection ahead. Both the car and the zombie horde rushed toward it, as if racing to be the first to arrive, each sprinting desperately. The survivors were slowly being engulfed. The few adults and children at the very front saw the approaching vehicle, and a glimmer of hope ignited in their eyes.
“Auntie Chen!” Su Wenwen exclaimed.
She recognized that person. It was a family that lived behind her house. Auntie Chen loved to play mahjong and was always trying to get Mother Su to join a game. The two families visited each other often. Even though Su Wenwen hadn’t been home in years, she recognized her instantly.
Auntie Chen had clearly seen Su Wenwen too, and a smile bloomed on her face. However, the smile quickly froze. As the minivan reached the intersection, it didn’t pause for even a second before turning onto another road and speeding away. In the next instant, her body fell uncontrollably, her head hitting the ground as she fainted.
Before she lost consciousness completely, she vaguely saw countless ugly maws closing in…
Luo Xi watched the hell on earth unfold in the rearview mirror, then glanced at the dazed Su Wenwen, unsure of what to say.
“It’s… it’s this horrifying…?” Even as a seasoned adult, Mother Su couldn’t help but shed tears, feeling utterly powerless as she watched a familiar friend being devoured.
Father Su was also lost in a daze for a long time, his eyes fixed on the zombies chasing furiously behind them. Fortunately, after a while, the zombies couldn’t keep up with the car’s speed and gradually gave up the chase.
Seeing zombies on TV was a completely different experience from seeing them in person. Mother and Father Su didn’t speak for the rest of the journey, clearly unable to adapt so quickly to the cruelty of the world outside.
Su Wenwen didn’t try to comfort them, instead letting them regulate their own emotions. Back in her previous life, when the apocalypse had just begun, it had taken Su Wenwen a full three days to gradually adapt.
And that was considered fast. Some people couldn’t handle it and committed suicide by taking pills. Those who survived all had immense psychological resilience.
Just as the car left the small town—perhaps because it was too hot inside—Mother Su opened a window, leaned out, and began vomiting violently. Father Su gently patted her back, sighing helplessly.
“Wenwen, is this how you and Luo Xi have been getting by all this time?” Father Su asked.
Su Wenwen nodded silently. Actually, with the system, dealing with zombies is secondary. The most exhausting part is dealing with scheming people, like my uncle’s family. But since I have the system, I don’t have to worry too much.
Judging by the direction the zombies were running, their destination was probably her home. Seeing that her mother had just finished throwing up, Su Wenwen decided not to say anything. Instead, she handed her mother a tissue to wipe her mouth and offered her water to rinse it out. But her mother refused. “It must be hard for you two to find supplies outside. We should save the water!”
Su Wenwen smiled. “Mom, let me show you something cool.”
She had no intention of hiding her abilities from her parents. She opened her Spatial Backpack for them to see and told them that Luo Xi was an ability user, so finding food wasn’t too difficult.
The elderly couple’s eyes widened in amazement as they stared at the Spatial Backpack, repeatedly marveling at how incredible it was. Then, Mother Su said, “You two must keep your abilities a secret. And the Spatial Backpack, don’t let anyone else see it.”
“Don’t worry, I know.”
Su Wenwen turned her head to check her character panel. She currently had over 1,600 attribute points. After some careful consideration, she maxed out all of her character’s attributes, then bought a pair of Intermediate-grade Shoes, which gave Agility +30 and Damage Taken -5%.
She had a little over two hundred attribute points left.
She asked the system if it was possible to break the 100-point limit now that all her attributes were maxed out.
【Yes, but the host is still a cannon fodder female supporting character. You cannot unlock the attribute cap until you receive a promotion mission. Whether this main mission appears or not depends on how high the villain’s favorability is towards the host.】
In short, she needed to keep raising the villain’s favorability and lowering her blackening value for a chance to trigger this kind of promotion mission.
Whatever, I’m not in a hurry.
Su Wenwen hadn’t even assembled a full set of equipment. Even if the cap was unlocked, she wouldn’t have enough attribute points to use.
In the afternoon, Su Wenwen took over driving duties.
In the moment they got out of the car to switch places, Luo Xi suddenly asked Su Wenwen a question. “Just now… I didn’t save anyone. Will you blame me?”
Su Wenwen was slightly taken aback. “Why would I blame you?”
Luo Xi simply smiled and got into the passenger seat.
Su Wenwen understood, more or less. The reason Luo Xi asked was simply that she was afraid Su Wenwen would disapprove. But at that moment, there was no time to save anyone. If it had been Su Wenwen driving, she would have made the same choice to leave immediately.
With the tank full, the car started up again.
Father and Mother Su, being older, were tired after sitting in the car for half a day. They leaned back in their seats and drifted off to sleep. They would have to keep watch at night, so Su Wenwen told Luo Xi to get some rest first.
Luo Xi nodded and leaned against her seat, closing her eyes. She was still wearing the same clothes that Su Wenwen had dirtied that morning. There were faint dark circles under her eyes, a clear sign that she hadn’t been resting well recently.
But Luo Xi had good features. Even with a weary expression, she possessed a kind of fragile beauty that made one’s heart ache, inspiring a desire to protect and cherish her.
The setting sun burned half the sky red, casting a golden hue over Luo Xi’s fair, translucent face. It was like a tranquil, old photograph—lacking the touch-up techniques of the modern era, yet capable of capturing a person’s most beautiful moment.
Su Wenwen glanced over. She had never been fond of taking pictures, nor did she understand why photography enthusiasts would spend tens of thousands on a camera. Now, she understood. She desperately wanted to capture this beautiful image, but unfortunately, she was driving. And unfortunately, she didn’t have a camera.
