Departure
Su Wenwen ignored Qi Jiacheng behind her. The purple bruises on her body had yet to fade, her face was swollen, and it hurt to even move her mouth to speak.
Ahead, a small path led to an older nongtang1, where many residents lived. Just as Su Wenwen was about to open her mouth to warn Luo Xi, Luo Xi suddenly grabbed her hand and broke into a sprint.
Qi Jiacheng, not understanding why, subconsciously ran after them. But the closer he got to the path, the more clearly he could hear the clamor of shuffling footsteps, as if something was about to squeeze its way out from within.
His pace quickened involuntarily, but for some reason, he always remained a certain distance from the two figures ahead, completely unable to catch up.
As he passed the entrance to the path, he heard a low growl. He instinctively glanced to the side, only to see a clearly magnified mouth dripping with horrifying and disgusting mucus. His legs went weak with fright, and he tumbled to the ground, coincidentally dodging the zombie’s mouth.
The skin on his elbow was scraped raw on the rough cement, but Qi Jiacheng paid no mind to the searing pain. He scrambled to get up, only to fall back down due to his trembling legs. He watched in terror as the zombie lunged at him again and screamed, “Wenwen-jie, save me!”
He watched, petrified, as the zombie’s hideous face grew larger and larger. His entire body turned stiff and cold, his mind a complete blank. All he saw was the flash of a cold blade, followed by a round, heavy object falling at his feet.
Qi Jiacheng looked down and was stunned to see a ferocious zombie head. Its terrifying mouth was still agape, as if it wanted to swallow him whole. A chill shot up from the soles of his feet to the top of his head, raising goosebumps all over his skin. He let out an unconscious scream and, with a sudden burst of strength from who knows where, quickly scrambled to his feet.
He ran without looking back.
Seeing him run in the direction of home, Su Wenwen let out a sneer. Just as she was about to chase him down, Luo Xi stopped her. She turned back to look at Luo Xi, her gaze filled with confusion.
“Your mother sees him return home safe and sound, but she doesn’t see you. What do you think will happen?”
Su Wenwen only had to think for a moment to know that her mother would definitely get into a huge argument with her uncle. Furthermore, Qi Jiacheng had been traumatized and would probably refuse to leave the house from now on. If her mother were to let Su Wenwen go out to find food alone, given her personality, she would never agree, no matter how much she usually doted on her uncle.
“Then let’s not be in a hurry to go back.”
It just so happened that Su Wenwen needed to continue farming attribute points. Although she had already farmed over a thousand points last night, enough to buy a piece of equipment, she hadn’t. She didn’t have any spare points and was afraid it would be troublesome if she suddenly needed them.
The monster-grinding spot was, naturally, the nongtang.
The path in the nongtang was narrow, only wide enough for three people to walk abreast. So even if they encountered a group of zombies, they wouldn’t get surrounded. However, to prevent the tragedy of a pincer attack, the two didn’t dare to go too deep, sticking to the periphery.
With Luo Xi assisting Su Wenwen, the zombies’ movements slowed considerably, but they weren’t completely frozen. It wasn’t that Luo Xi couldn’t freeze them, but that it was entirely unnecessary.
Su Wenwen was strong enough and not slow either. As long as she was faster than the zombies, she could finish one off with a single strike, so her efficiency wasn’t slow at all.
However, while her zombie-killing efficiency was up, her efficiency in retrieving crystal cores was still slow. She had to split the head open with one strike, then rummage around to find the red crystal core. She then had to wipe it clean with a piece of paper before handing it to Luo Xi.
In just half a day, the blade of the kitchen knife had become dull. Su Wenwen tossed it aside and switched to a military knife.
She had barely taken two steps when she saw a large, hairless yellow dog standing at a fork in the road, watching the two of them. Su Wenwen’s previously relaxed pace came to a halt.
The body of that big yellow dog was, for some reason, half a person’s height. Its entire body was covered in dried blood, which was in turn dampened by a strange liquid seeping from its skin. At first glance, it looked as if it were coated in a delicious-looking sauce.
Its fangs were abnormally large and yellow, also covered in some unknown fluid. It suddenly charged at the two of them, its speed incredibly fast. In the blink of an eye, it was right in front of Su Wenwen. She had no time to react at all. She only felt a tightness around her waist as her body was pulled to the side, narrowly avoiding the big yellow dog’s impact.
She didn’t have a moment to appreciate the soft hands2 behind her before she was pulled up and forced into a run. The big yellow dog dug its sharp claws into the ground to stabilize itself, then turned and gave chase once more.
Su Wenwen only glanced back for a second, but the big yellow dog was already about to catch up. Without a moment’s hesitation, she had the system max out her agility in one go.
And the big yellow dog, which had been moving at an extreme speed in her eyes, now seemed as if it were hindered by something; she could clearly see its movements.
Su Wenwen tightened her grip on Luo Xi’s hand. The instant the big yellow dog pounced, she hugged Luo Xi tightly and flashed to the side.
Its attack having failed, the big yellow dog let out a furious roar. The sound was deafening. Su Wenwen’s pupils contracted; she felt her ears ringing as if they were about to explode.
It’s actually a mutated zombie dog!
She clutched her head, her shoulders slumping weakly against the wall. Her head was splitting with pain, and her health bar was gradually decreasing. She quickly used a Cod Liver Oil3 to max out her stamina.
Luo Xi was also affected at first, but she quickly enveloped her head and five senses with her mental power, and the zombie dog’s roar sounded much weaker. Then, she placed her hand on the back of Su Wenwen’s head. A moment later, the pained expression on Su Wenwen’s face eased considerably.
She was very surprised. She hadn’t expected Luo Xi’s control over her mental power to have become so proficient already. Given time, she would probably be invincible. By then, she could pretty much walk sideways wherever she wanted.
“Don’t just stand there. I can’t spare the energy to hinder the zombie dog right now,” Luo Xi said, her fair brows furrowing together as if in great effort.
Su Wenwen tightened her grip on the military knife and leaped forward.
The zombie dog switched to a low growl. The peeling paint on the surrounding walls flaked off layer by layer due to its calls. Yet, Su Wenwen seemed not to hear it, her movements not pausing in the slightest as she closed in on it.
She aimed the sharp knife in her hand at its head. The zombie dog, knowing neither death nor fear, didn’t dodge or evade at all, opening its mouth to bite at the cold, gleaming military knife.
A dog’s mouth is much larger than a human’s, not to mention this zombie dog’s body was much larger than that of a normal canine. The width of its gaping maw was enough to bite off Su Wenwen’s entire arm.
With an incredibly swift movement, she sharply retracted her hand in mid-air, bent backward, reversed her grip, and thrust upward, piercing straight through its neck. Its low growl was cut off abruptly.

That’s a lot!
Su Wenwen quickly split its head open. Inside were two crystal cores. The harvest for the past half-day wasn’t bad. She wiped the cores clean and gave them to Luo Xi.
Luo Xi took the crystal cores and said, “It’s getting late. Your parents are probably worried sick by now. Let’s just grab some food and head back.”
Su Wenwen nodded and left the nongtang with Luo Xi.
They found some bagged potato chips and beef jerky in a dilapidated shop. As they were about to head back, Luo Xi shook her head and said, “We’re too clean.”
Su Wenwen looked down and saw that they were indeed clean. She found some zombie blood and smeared it on herself, then messed up her hair to make it look like she had just been through a life-or-death struggle.
Then she did the same for Luo Xi.
Su Wenwen was already used to dealing with zombies. Although she found the mucus disgusting, she wasn’t that repulsed by it. So, when she was smearing it on Luo Xi’s clothes, she actually found it quite fun, like painting, and even let out a laugh.
“Hey, you look so miserable.”
Luo Xi didn’t speak, merely pressing her lips tightly together.
Her once smooth and clean hair was also messed into a tangled, rather sloppy state by Su Wenwen. A smudge was also put on her fair face. She lowered her gaze, her face devoid of any smile, forcefully suppressing the emotions in her heart. It gave her a kind of poignant and vibrant beauty.
Seeing Luo Xi so uncomfortable, the smile on Su Wenwen’s face faded. She had almost forgotten that Luo Xi was a mysophobe. Because she hadn’t shown it much during their time together, Su Wenwen had completely forgotten about it.
Luo Xi had been enduring it all along. Though her face showed no emotion, a layer of goosebumps had risen on her arm, a clear sign of her extreme aversion. Yet, for the sake of making them both look more wretched, she hadn’t shown any dissatisfaction.
This was all for Su Wenwen’s sake.
She stared at her, stunned.
It felt as if something had exploded in her heart. She was overwhelmed by the favor, and also a little incredulous. What virtue or ability did she possess to deserve having a flower, untouched by dust, be stained for her sake?
Hearing no more laughter, Luo Xi looked up and met that conflicted gaze. She didn’t say anything, only raised her hand and said, “Let’s go home!”
Su Wenwen nodded obediently, her gaze shifting to Luo Xi’s slender palm. Then, she took it, and they left the place together.
The sun slowly set, its warm yellow afterglow shining on the mottled road, casting their elongated shadows—beautiful and serene.
It’s just that the more beautiful things are, the more fleeting they seem. When the two arrived at their doorstep, this tranquility was shattered. Before they even entered, they heard the sounds of her uncle and mother arguing.
It was mostly her mother questioning how Qi Jiacheng could have the nerve to abandon two girls and run back alone. Qi Wenhao naturally defended his son, saying things like it’s only natural to run when encountering danger, otherwise, it would just mean one more corpse.
Faintly, Su Wenwen heard her mother’s sobs. She quickly opened the door and went in. All eyes focused on her. When her mother saw her, she didn’t care about the dirt and mess on her body and hugged her tightly.
As if she were a long-lost, recovered treasure.
She stroked Su Wenwen’s messy hair. Seeing her in such a wretched state, her tears began to flow uncontrollably again. Heartache and remorse intertwined in her heart, leaving her unable to speak.
Father Su stood to the side, silently wiping his tears. It was clearly a touching scene, but Qi Wenhao had to spoil the mood by saying, “See, isn’t she fine!”
Mother Su turned and glared at him.
Qi Wenhao’s heart skipped a beat. “What did I say wrong?”
With red eyes, Mother Su said, “When we were little, Mom and Dad doted on you, and I endured it. Even when they passed away, you were the one they were most worried about. They gave you everything, and I didn’t say a word. When the apocalypse broke out, you came to my house for shelter, and I accepted you. But you… have you ever treated me as your older sister?”
“How have I not treated you as my sister?”
“No, you have never treated me as your sister. In the past, whenever there was something good to eat at home, you would never share it with me, even flaunting it in my face. When you made a mistake, Mom and Dad would always beat me. Qi Wenhao, you’re a grown man now, yet you’re still as selfish as you were when you were a child. I’ve seen right through you. You’re just an ungrateful white-eyed wolf4. You’ve always wanted my house, haven’t you? Now, it’s all yours. From now on, you and I have nothing to do with each other. You can just hug this house and live out your days in peace!”
“Nannan, let’s go.”
