I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 31

Returning Home

Three days later, Su Wenwen finally arrived in G City.

Perhaps it was because of the sharp decline in the living population, or maybe because the rural population was small to begin with, but while there were some mottled bloodstains on the streets, there weren’t many zombies. The occasional one she saw was just an ordinary zombie, which the villain would immobilize before letting Su Wenwen finish it off with a single strike.

In just these few days, she had accumulated over six hundred attribute points. However, the village roads were narrow and occasionally blocked by abandoned vehicles. After weaving left and right, the two of them eventually had to get out of the car and proceed on foot.

Su Wenwen only carried a spatial backpac, while the villain shouldered a small hiking pack. The rest of their water and food were left in the car. To prevent theft, they had parked the car in a relatively dense part of the woods and concealed it with broken branches.

Having not been home for so many years, Su Wenwen felt a mix of excitement and unease. She felt she was a terrible daughter; besides sending a bit of money each year, she had never once thought of coming back to see her parents.

Su Wenwen’s family wasn’t wealthy, but they weren’t poor either. Her dad had previously worked on a construction site and saved up a little money, but he had used it all to build a small Western-style villa. In the village, it looked particularly grand, and you could spot her family’s little three-story house from a glance.

“Hey, we’re here.”

Su Wenwen broke into a jog, with the villain following behind her.

The iron gate outside the villa was locked. Inside, there was a half-mu1 plot of land where some fruit trees and vegetables were planted. However, all the fruit had been picked from the trees, and the vegetables in the field were yellowing and withered from neglect.

Su Wenwen had the key to the house. She opened the iron gate and walked in. She first observed the situation inside through a side window; the tables and chairs were covered in a messy assortment of leftovers.

She frowned slightly.

Even in the apocalypse, her mother would never let the house get this messy. She quickly used her key to open the main door and saw her cousin’s eight-year-old son sitting on the floor, tearing apart a stuffed rabbit from her room. Scattered beside him was a mess of jewelry and long-unused cosmetics.

Su Wenwen’s face instantly darkened. She strode forward, grabbed the back of the boy’s collar, and hauled him up. The child dangled in mid-air, his short legs kicking. The sudden turn of events scared him into a fit of sharp, piercing wails.

“Xiaobao, what’s wrong…”

Her aunt, uncle, cousin, and cousin’s wife came running out at the sound, but Su Wenwen’s parents were nowhere to be seen. If she weren’t so familiar with this place, she would have thought she’d walked into her uncle’s house.

They froze for a moment upon seeing Su Wenwen and the villain. Her aunt was the first to react, quickly taking the child into her arms before glaring viciously at Su Wenwen. “Why are you bullying your cousin’s son the moment you get back?”

“Where are my parents?” Su Wenwen didn’t want to argue with them.

“They’re over in the utility room…”

Hearing this, Su Wenwen immediately ran towards the utility room.

The room, which originally stored farming tools and miscellaneous items, had been converted into a room for potted plants. Washbasins that weren’t in use were now being used to grow vegetables, which had already sprouted. Her parents were cooped up in here, tending to the plants. Seeing their hunched backs, Su Wenwen pressed her lips together, forcefully suppressing the rage in her heart.

“The weather is nice today. Should we move these out to get some sun?” Mother Su said, seeing that the tender sprouts were wilting and listless.

“No, if someone sees them, it will cause trouble.”

“But they won’t grow without sunlight. We don’t have much food left in the house. If we can’t grow more, we’ll all starve. When Nannan comes back, she’ll have to starve too…”

“Mom, I’m back.”

Mother Su and Father Su quickly turned their heads. Their faces lit up with pleasant surprise upon seeing Su Wenwen, but Father Su, being rather proud and awkward2, quickly put on a stern face and said, “I thought you weren’t coming back.”

Mother Su shot him a glare, then hugged Su Wenwen, her eyes reddening. “Aiyo, my Nannan has gotten thinner. How did you make it all this way? Are you hurt? Are you hungry? I’ll go make you something to eat.”

Even though they were almost out of food, she was still thinking of Su Wenwen. A stone seemed to lodge in her heart, making it so unbearably tight that she couldn’t speak. She could only shake her head to indicate she wasn’t hungry.

Her parents had also lost weight; you could even say they were malnourished. They probably hadn’t had a proper meal in a while. Seeing her uncle’s family looking fat and well-fed3, she quickly understood what had happened over the past month.

It was understandable for Mother Su to dote on her younger brother as a relative.

But Mother Su’s family of origin was one that valued men over women, and they doted on their son to an extreme degree, taking Mother Su’s contributions for granted without ever showing gratitude. If her maternal grandparents hadn’t passed away early, the money Mother Su sent to support them would have likely ended up in her uncle’s pocket.

Su Wenwen knew exactly what kind of people that family was, which was why she had repeatedly warned her mother not to let anyone know about their situation at home. She never expected them to have forced their way in anyway.

And from the looks of it, her mother wasn’t complaining at all.

This wouldn’t do. This was the apocalypse, not an era of peace. Su Wenwen had to make her mother harden her heart, but she had no idea how to do it yet.

“Nannan, aren’t you going to introduce your friend?” Mother Su’s eyes lit up when she saw the beautiful girl who had followed Su Wenwen in.

“Luo Xi. You’ve met her before.”

“Ah, hello! This girl is so pretty. And where’s Sisi? Is she playing in the living room?” Mother Su looked around, searching for Sisi’s small figure.

“I left her in a safe place. I’ll introduce you when there’s a chance. I have some food here. Mom, Dad, you two eat something first…”

Su Wenwen put down her backpack and took out some food to hand to them, but she didn’t take out too much. She just wanted them to eat it secretly here.

Who knew that her uncle’s family seemed to have the noses of dogs. They appeared out of nowhere and snatched the bread and milk. Su Wenwen subconsciously reached out and snatched it back. With her superior strength, her uncle was no match for her.

“Hey, we’re all family, don’t be so stingy. Besides, your cousin’s son is still so young, he needs food for nutrition. As an elder, shouldn’t you yield a little?” Qi Wenhao stared at the small amount of food in Su Wenwen’s hands, swallowing his saliva.

“Who’s family with you? I worked my ass off to find this food. If you want to give your kid nutrition, go find it yourselves.” Su Wenwen wasn’t buying it. She snorted coldly and stuffed the food back into her parents’ hands.

Qi Wenhao secretly gave his son, Qi Jiacheng, a look. Qi Jiacheng then nudged his own son, who immediately hugged Mother Su’s arm and cried that he was hungry.

Mother Su had always been soft-hearted, and seeing how young the child was, she ended up giving the food in her hands to the uncle’s family. Seeing Su Wenwen’s displeasure, Mother Su quickly patted the back of her hand to comfort her.

Su Wenwen didn’t say anything. Instead, she smiled and took out more food from her bag for her mother.

Mother Su knew this food was hard to come by and was reluctant to eat it, planning to hide it away. Su Wenwen saw through her intentions, directly tore open the packaging, and watched as her mother ate it all.

The mother and daughter chatted in the plant room while Father Su fiddled with the soil in a pot on the side, occasionally looking up at them with a gratified and happy smile.

That evening, Mother Su wanted to go to the kitchen to cook, but she was stopped by her uncle’s family. They said there wasn’t much food left and only half a tank of gas, so they had to be frugal.

As a result, Mother Su only managed to get a few pieces of dried sweet potato for Su Wenwen. Su Wenwen ate a few and gave the rest to the villain.

“Try it, it’s very sweet.”

Luo Xi ate one, her gaze fixed on Su Wenwen as she said, “Yes, it’s very sweet.”

Hearing this, Mother Su was delighted, smiling from ear to ear. It took Su Wenwen a moment to realize the ambiguous undertone in those words, which her mother had completely misinterpreted.

She quickly made an excuse to go back to her room to rest and headed upstairs. In her room, besides the mauled doll and messed-up cosmetics, everything else was the same as before, with no major changes.

However, there was no quilt on the bed. Mother Su skillfully came in with a quilt and spread it on the bed. She turned to Su Wenwen and said, “You must be tired after traveling for so long. Get a good rest tonight. Don’t think too much about your uncle’s matter. We’re all family, after all. We should help out where we can.”

Su Wenwen, contrary to her usual self, smiled and nodded in agreement.

Seeing this, Mother Su smiled happily, as if the family had finally reconciled and reunited. But only Su Wenwen knew that she was plotting something else—something to make her mother and uncle have a complete falling out.

It was a bit ruthless, but if her uncle weren’t so selfish and showed even a little gratitude towards her mother, she would naturally help if she had the ability.

For the next two days, she planned to observe first. If her uncle’s family acted the same as always, then they couldn’t blame her for being heartless.

“The guest rooms are all occupied by Nannan’s uncle. For now, I’ll have to trouble you to share a room with my Nannan,” Mother Su said to Luo Xi.

Su Wenwen had been thinking about her uncle’s situation. Hearing her mother’s words, she snapped back to reality and noticed there were two pillows on the bed. It was obvious her mother intended for the villain to sleep in the same bed with her.

Strange, so strange.

Her parents were usually incredibly sensitive about her being with other girls. How could they seem to have forgotten today that their daughter was a mosquito coil that couldn’t be any more bent?

Mother Su left the room, thoughtfully closing the door behind her.

But she didn’t leave. Instead, she pressed her ear against the door. Beside her, Father Su coughed in embarrassment, signaling that it was improper for elders to eavesdrop on the younger generation like this.

Mother Su ignored him and continued to listen.

“Don’t mind her, my mom isn’t usually like this,” Su Wenwen said to the villain, picking up a pillow. “I’ll sleep on the floor, you can have the bed.”

Luo Xi didn’t speak. Instead, she pointed towards the door. Su Wenwen focused her attention slightly and could hear the sound of breathing from the doorway. She rubbed her ears, thinking she had misheard, but when she listened again, one breath had become two.

Um…

Are these still my parents?

“Auntie and Uncle are quite cute,” Luo Xi said with a smile.

Su Wenwen rubbed her ear in embarrassment. She didn’t get it either. In the past, whenever they saw her with Helian Yun, they acted like they had eaten gunpowder, each one fiercer than the last. Today, they were no longer fierce but gentle, which actually made her feel unaccustomed to it.

“They’re cute when they’re not scolding me.”

Su Wenwen took out another set of bedding and spread it on the floor. Now that she had found her parents, her heart had settled down a lot. The villain had followed her all this way and still hadn’t been reunited with her own family.

Thinking of this, she turned her head and saw the villain picking up a photo from the bedside table. It was a childhood photo of Su Wenwen with her family. She had two braided pigtails and a big red flower hairpin on her head. She looked very tacky, but her face was delicate and pretty, with large eyes.

“Don’t look, it’s so ugly.”

She quickly dropped the bedding, ran over to grab the photo, and opened a drawer. She had intended to toss the photo inside, but then she saw another picture she had almost forgotten.

It was a photo taken with Helian Yun right after they had gotten together. The two of them were standing close, with their arms around each other’s shoulders, facing the camera. In the instant the picture was taken, Helian Yun had turned her head and stolen a kiss on Su Wenwen’s cheek. It was the only photo of them that truly looked like a couple.
