【Mid-level and high-level protective gear are now available in the Shop.】
Finally, I don’t have to be a maid anymore.
Aside from the low-level gear which was obtained for free, mid-level and high-level equipment could only be bought from the Shop. It was divided into gloves, clothes, helmets, shoes, and belts, with each combination providing different effects. A single set of mid-level protective gear cost a shocking six thousand attribute points.
Even adding the points from the zombies she hunted this morning, Su Wenwen only had a little over six hundred attribute points. She couldn’t even afford a single piece of mid-level equipment.
Although it would be difficult, the apocalypse had just begun. Su Wenwen was still quite confident she could slowly save up for a full set of gear.
A large pile of crystal cores was stacked up beside the villain. Since they were inconvenient to carry, a portion was stored in Su Wenwen’s spatial backpack for safekeeping, while the rest was packed into the villain’s own small backpack.
After lunch, Su Wenwen used a small stove powered by liquefied gas to boil some brown sugar water for the villain, pouring it into a thermos.
Luo Xi took the thermos from Su Wenwen. She subconsciously fiddled with the rabbit ears on the lid, which couldn’t help but remind her of the first time she met Su Wenwen. Back then, she had also offered her a thermos with that same smile.
At that time, her father had just died. Su Wenwen’s appearance was like her sunshine, a memory she would cherish for a lifetime.
Luo Xi looked up at Su Wenwen. So many years had passed, but she seemed just the same—like warm brown sugar water, sweetening one’s heart.
Without even realizing it herself, Luo Xi’s gaze as she watched Su Wenwen was as gentle as flowing water. Paired with the beauty mark at the corner of her eye, it conveyed a lingering tenderness that was hard to put into words.
“Ahem, um…” Su Wenwen’s ears turned red as she averted her gaze, not daring to meet the villain’s eyes. “You should rest well this afternoon. I can go hunt zombies by myself.”
Although Luo Xi didn’t get cramps, she would still feel somewhat uncomfortable, which would affect her concentration. She had also observed that morning that Su Wenwen was more than capable of handling small zombie animals on her own, so she said, “Alright, I’ll listen to you.”
That phrase again. Su Wenwen raised an eyebrow slightly. “I’ll just search for zombies nearby. I won’t go far.”
After Su Wenwen left, Luo Xi didn’t stay idle. After drinking the brown sugar water, she took a half-full bottle of mineral water and began training her spiritual power…
Su Wenwen was just over four hundred attribute points away from being able to buy a piece of mid-level equipment. She activated her spiritual power to do a wide-area search and quickly discovered a zombie rabbit.
The rabbit also scented a living person. Its long ears shot up, and with a kick of its legs, it charged over at an incredible speed.
Su Wenwen tightened her grip on her military knife, sidestepping with a reaction speed beyond that of an ordinary person. The moment the rabbit landed, she stomped on its body and finished it off with a single slash.
【Attribute Points +24】
Although it wasn’t many points, it was at least safe. Su Wenwen searched the area again and killed a few zombie rats.
By chance, she came across another house. The main door was shut tight, and the windows were sealed from the inside. Could there be other survivors here?
Su Wenwen walked over and pressed her ear against the door to listen carefully, but she heard nothing. The house had an old-fashioned wooden bolt, and through a thin crack in the middle, she could only see darkness. She turned on her flashlight and shone it inside.
A wooden table and chairs were blocking the door from within. A faint, foul smell drifted out, and Su Wenwen covered her nose as she activated her five senses.
The scene inside was one of utter devastation. Two skeletons lay on the ground, embracing each other. In the center of their bones was an even smaller skeleton. It looked like a couple who had died protecting their child in their arms.
Sensing the light, numerous zombie rats in the room began squeaking excitedly, searching for the source. They grew agitated and exceptionally vicious.
Su Wenwen turned off her flashlight.
The zombie rats in there would be worth more than four hundred attribute points, but there were too many of them. Since Su Wenwen was alone, she would more or less get injured.
She ate three small cakes to recover some stamina, then used one clear tea, one dried meat, one Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, and one dried tofu, bringing her character’s status to its peak. Then, with a single kick, she smashed the wooden door open.
These zombie rats were not small. They had long tails, ferocious faces, and slender, pointed snouts—they were the common, large house rats, uglier than field mice. They were so ugly that all the hair on Su Wenwen’s body stood on end.
Squeaking sounds surrounded her from all sides. As they swarmed her, Su Wenwen stomped on rats with her left foot and swung her knife with her right hand, killing as she retreated. But several rats still scrambled past her feet and up her pant legs.
Her body trembled uncontrollably. She frantically kicked her legs, but she couldn’t shake off the disgusting things.
When a rat crawled to her waist, Su Wenwen shuddered and began frantically slapping the rats on her body. Her left hand grabbed onto slimy, sticky fur, and she almost couldn’t stop herself from letting out a scream.
It’s just too disgusting.
She had thought she wasn’t afraid of rats, having killed several field mice before, but she was wrong. She had a visceral revulsion to these long-tailed creatures. But for the attribute points, she forced herself to suppress her disgust and crush the rat’s head.
Soon after, her body was being bitten all over. The wounds weren’t large, but the pain only intensified her revulsion toward the zombie rats. She didn’t rush to use her gauze, instead enduring the nausea and crushing the rats’ heads one by one with her hands.
Once all the rats were dead, Su Wenwen used three low-level gauze to treat her external wounds. But she was still in a poisoned status, her health continuously ticking down. She had no choice but to use one cod liver oil, which restored two thousand HP1, and wait for the poisoned status to wear off.
During this time, Su Wenwen swiftly collected all the crystal cores. She then checked her attribute points and saw she could finally buy a piece of mid-level equipment.
Each piece of equipment had a different effect: clothes corresponded to an HP bonus, the helmet to spirit, shoes to agility, the belt to stamina, and gloves to strength.
Su Wenwen obviously prioritized strength, so she purchased the gloves. They gave a thirty-point strength bonus and reduced damage taken by 5%. However, once she equipped the gloves, her previously equipped beginner’s protective gear was forcefully replaced and converted into attribute points.
Now Su Wenwen had two hundred and forty attribute points left. She was very satisfied. Seeing that the sun was about to set, she quickly tidied up and went back to find the villain.
The fiery red sun burned across half the sky. Su Wenwen walked along a small path in the woods, looking up to admire the beautiful scenery.
But her good mood didn’t last long. She received a message from Helian Yun. The content was: I will find you, and I will take her back.
Su Wenwen sent a big-faced emoji back.
She really didn’t know where Helian Yun got the confidence to try and snatch the villain. Could it be that she had obtained a special ability, which was why she was spouting such nonsense?
【It’s not impossible. After all, the system is bound to the Host. As the Host’s ex, her fate will more or less be affected.】
So what if she has an ability!
In any case, Su Wenwen wasn’t worried that the villain would fall for Helian Yun. Not unless the villain suddenly lost her mind.
【Even if the villain isn’t snatched away by that scum ex, she could be snatched away by some other little temptress. The Host should make a move sooner rather than later. You can infuriate the scum ex and get a beautiful wife. What’s not to like?】
As a piece of emotionless data, the system couldn’t possibly understand Su Wenwen’s currently complicated feelings.
She was thoroughly disappointed in Helian Yun, but it had only been a month or so since her death in her previous life and their breakup. How could she possibly jump into another relationship so quickly?
Su Wenwen saw that Helian Yun didn’t reply and put her phone away. As she looked up, she saw the villain standing in the light of the setting sun, a smile gracing her lips.
This was a scene Su Wenwen had fantasized about countless times in the past, but it had always been her waiting for Helian Yun. She had never felt the happiness and joy of having someone waiting for her like she did today.
Her footsteps quickened unconsciously, only stopping when she was right in front of the villain. She felt her heart throb, and the emptiness she had felt was filled to the brim.
Luo Xi frowned, glancing at the holes and bloodstains on Su Wenwen’s clothes. She pulled her into the house and, without another word, went to lift her shirt, but Su Wenwen blocked her with both hands.
Luo Xi looked up at her and saw that Su Wenwen’s face was redder than the sunset. She instantly understood and said helplessly, “Let me see where you’re hurt.”
“I… I have a special way to heal my wounds quickly. I’m fine now,” Su Wenwen stuttered.
“Let me take a look anyway, okay?”
Su Wenwen looked at the villain’s worried gaze and felt she shouldn’t be so jumpy. Besides, she had to change out of these clothes anyway, so she nodded in agreement.
Taking a set of clean clothes out of her spatial backpack, Su Wenwen was about to take off her shirt and pants when she saw the villain standing right in front of her. Her heart panicked, and she simply turned her back and stripped them off in one go.
The sunset shone through the window, dyeing her pale skin a rosy red. Her slender back was smooth and completely free of scars.
Luo Xi pressed her lips together. “Alright, you can get dressed now.”
Su Wenwen hurriedly pulled on her shirt. But when she was putting on her pants, she was in such a rush that she lost her balance while standing on one leg. She swayed and almost fell, but the villain caught her from behind, wrapping an arm around her waist and saving her from disaster.
“Sit on the stool to put them on. There’s no rush.” Seeing Su Wenwen’s flustered state, Luo Xi found it so cute that she deliberately teased her, “I’m not a wolf or a tiger. I won’t do anything to you.”
“I… I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Mm, I know. you’re just shy and feel embarrassed with me watching, right?”
Su Wenwen nodded.
“If your best friend were here, would you still be embarrassed?”
Su Wenwen thought about it carefully. Although she had never changed in front of her best friend either, she really wouldn’t feel embarrassed in front of her, so she honestly shook her head.
“Alright, I understand.”
What does that mean? What does the villain understand?
Before Su Wenwen could figure it out, the villain suddenly let go of her. She quickly sat down on the stool and put on her pants. Once her body was covered up, that little bit of shame she felt disappeared.
After night fell, Su Wenwen carried a bucket of water to her room and gave herself a simple wash. The system kept reminding her to do a mission, but Su Wenwen didn’t think it was the right time. She couldn’t just abruptly go find the villain to talk about her feelings, so she could only put the mission aside for now.
The next day, the villain was feeling much better. They packed up their things and left the area.
