I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 26

Maid for Twenty-Four Hours

The next morning, Su Wenwen and the villain prepared to depart. Knowing the villain was an excellent shot, Wang Kelin left a gun with her for self-defense. She also informed them that when the helicopter arrived, it would prioritize taking the children to a safe location, and asked Su Wenwen if she wanted to leave Sisi behind.

Su Wenwen hesitated. After all, no one could guarantee what the road ahead would be like, and traveling with a child was indeed inconvenient. She crouched down and stroked Sisi’s head. “What do you think?”

Sisi’s big, innocent eyes glanced at Wang Kelin. She wore a military uniform and had a sharp gaze, but it softened considerably when she met Sisi’s eyes.

Sisi didn’t answer Su Wenwen’s question, asking one of her own instead. “Will Sisi be able to see Wenwen-jiejie and Luo Xi-jiejie again?”

Su Wenwen nodded and repeated, “Yes, we’ll meet again.”

In the end, Sisi chose to stay. Her small hand held Wang Kelin’s large one as she watched the nanny van drive away from the camp. Su Wenwen saw Sisi waving in the rearview mirror and stuck her own hand out the window to wave goodbye, only pulling it back in and closing the window when the figures had vanished from sight.

Su Wenwen silently watched the decaying scenery outside the window. Parting in such an environment made the reluctance in her heart especially pronounced. With one less person, the surroundings felt terrifyingly quiet, which she found a little unsettling.

But it was safer for Sisi to stay than to follow them. Even if she couldn’t bear it, she had to.

Su Wenwen rubbed the bridge of her nose and glanced at the HP on her status panel. It was just over 2,400. After standing guard for Wang Kelin last night, her endurance had dropped, and her stamina recovery had slowed down with it.

“You should get some sleep.”

“En,” Su Wenwen replied, reclining her seat to lie down. It would be more comfortable.

The nanny van left the dilapidated town and turned onto another small road, a route intended to bypass the city center ahead.

Occasional houses could be seen along the road, their walls spray-painted with pleas for help. But the front doors were wide open, a clear sign that no one was left alive inside.

The road gradually narrowed, and the surrounding woods grew denser and more luxuriant, as if they’d been injected with growth hormones. Each tree was sturdier than the last, and houses were almost completely out of sight.

By noon, the temperature soared. Su Wenwen slept restlessly, her head beaded with sweat. Seeing this, Luo Xi turned on the car’s air conditioning.

The lively chirping of cicadas echoed through the forest, and flocks of birds wheeled joyfully in the sky. Without the city’s pollution, the air had become much fresher.

The nanny van came to a stop. Not far ahead lay a sika deer, its face mangled beyond recognition. Most of its body had been devoured, with only its antlers remaining intact.

The deer’s hearing seemed worse than a zombie’s; it hadn’t noticed the van. It turned its head, its eyeballs gouged out, leaving only two bloody sockets.

Luo Xi glanced at the still-sleeping Su Wenwen, then started the engine. The deer heard the sound and raised its head, twitching, but under the control of her psychic power, it remained standing in place. A moment later, it was crushed beneath the heavy wheels.

The vehicle jolted slightly before calmly driving away. However, a large patch of the forest ahead had been scorched, and fallen trees lay scattered about. The already narrow road was now blocked by the scattered wreckage of an airplane.

Severed limbs were everywhere, but exposure to the sun and rain had bleached them into piles of white bones, marked with the teeth marks of scavenging animals.

Luo Xi had no choice but to drive into the woods. The nanny van wasn’t suited for off-roading; the muddy ground was uneven and soft, and the vehicle lurched violently, shaking Su Wenwen awake.

She rubbed her eyes and asked the villain where they were, only to learn that the path had been destroyed by a plane crash.

“Wild animals eating corpses?” Su Wenwen asked worriedly. “Could there be animal zombies nearby?”

“Yes. I saw a zombie deer just now. I held it in place with my psychic power.”

Su Wenwen hadn’t noticed a thing, having slept soundly the whole time. It seemed the villain’s abilities were growing. Hopefully, they wouldn’t encounter any overly powerful zombies before the villain was fully developed.

Her gaze constantly scanned their surroundings. There were tire tracks on the muddy ground left by other vehicles. The distance between the tracks was quite wide, suggesting the vehicle was no smaller than their nanny van. After a short detour, they managed to get back onto the small road.

The road also bore the muddy tracks of a convoy. As they drove on, the tracks gradually disappeared, replaced by the occasional sight of shattered liquor bottles, household trash, and discarded clothing on the ground.

It looked as if the convoy had thrown a party, reveling wildly in the apocalypse.

Su Wenwen had no fondness for such people. To put it nicely, they were living for the moment, since they could be dead tomorrow. But to put it bluntly, it was clearly just a bunch of people who couldn’t control their emotions making excuses to vent.

She turned to grab the spatial backpack from the back seat, taking out water and bread. Just as she was about to ask the villain to stop for a rest, she saw her suddenly frown, her lips pursed as she stared ahead. Su Wenwen followed her gaze.

A large diesel van was parked far in the distance, its rear doors wide open. It was too far to see clearly, so Su Wenwen used her binoculars to check the situation.

The inside of the van was a mess. Food and drinks were strewn about, along with disheveled clothes and drag marks of blood.

A bare-assed male zombie was standing on the roof of the van. A large chunk of flesh had been torn from its cheek and neck. Su Wenwen didn’t look any lower.

She turned to see the villain’s awkward expression and couldn’t help but laugh. “Psychic ability users really are amazing, being able to see a zombie from so far away.”

Seeing the villain grip the steering wheel without a word, she added, “In a bit, help me hold it still. I need to kill a zombie with my own hands.”

“Why do you need to kill it yourself?” Luo Xi raised an eyebrow, glancing at Su Wenwen, whose smile couldn’t have been more fake. “Is this another one of your little secrets you can’t tell me?”

“Sorry, I can’t say.”

The phrase “little secret” had come up many times. Su Wenwen was genuinely afraid the villain would get fed up and refuse to cooperate. That would make it very difficult for her to earn attribute points.

“Fine. But if I’m your assistant, what’s in it for me?”

【Beep: Main Mission Triggered.】

【For the next twenty-four hours, you cannot refuse the villain’s requests. Refusal will be considered a failure. Penalty: Muscle Weakness, effect lasts for twenty-four hours.】

In other words, as long as she didn’t refuse, the mission would automatically complete after twenty-four hours, even if the villain didn’t make a single request during that time.

Su Wenwen’s eyes darted around. She said to the villain, “From now on, all the crystal cores are yours. I won’t take a single one.”

“What, are you not an ability user? You don’t need crystal cores?”

Su Wenwen’s smile stiffened. For a moment, she didn’t know how to answer. Just then, the zombie spotted the moving nanny van. It let out a low roar, leaped from the roof of the van, and charged straight for them.

Luo Xi slammed on the brakes. Watching the approaching zombie, she said, “If you can’t think of a good reward for me, then that zombie is mine.”

Su Wenwen’s mind was a complete mess. She couldn’t think of any benefit the villain particularly wanted, and she couldn’t reveal her own secrets. Throwing caution to the wind, she blurted out, “As long as your requests are reasonable, I’ll be your maid for twenty-four hours. I’ll do whatever you say.”

Being a maid also fulfilled the quest’s requirements.

Plus, she wouldn’t have to rack her brain trying to figure out what the villain wanted. Two birds with one stone—perfect!

“Alright, deal.” Seeing Su Wenwen’s look of grim determination, the corner of Luo Xi’s mouth lifted slightly. She looked just like a flustered rabbit.

As the zombie painstakingly ran up to the nanny van, Luo Xi’s brow twitched. The zombie’s movements had clearly slowed. She felt her control over her psychic power wasn’t very refined yet; she couldn’t immobilize it completely like she had with the zombie deer, only create resistance around it to slow its movements.

In Su Wenwen’s eyes, the zombie’s actions were no different from slow motion. She easily sidestepped it, aimed the dagger in her hand at the zombie’s soft chin, and thrust upward at an angle.

A direct hit. However, the blade only went in halfway before meeting a hard obstruction. Su Wenwen gripped the hilt with both hands and pushed hard. With a pfft, the entire blade sank in, and the zombie lost its support, collapsing to the ground.

Su Wenwen turned and smiled at the villain in the van. With the villain’s support, killing zombies was so much easier. She didn’t even have to think about defense.

But the villain’s expression suddenly changed. Su Wenwen’s heart lurched. She whipped her head around, only to see a blur pause before her eyes. Before her body could react, she was violently tackled.

Her back slammed into the front of the nanny van. A raised alloy emblem struck her right on the spine, and the pain made her entire body go limp. The military knife clattered to the ground.

A low growl sounded by her ear.

Her body went rigid as the experience of her tragic death in her past life replayed in her mind once more. Every pore on her skin trembled.

The female zombie before her had a pretty face, with a faint web of blood vessels crawling across her skin, giving her a strange, eerie beauty. But the moment she opened her mouth, that beauty vanished, replaced by nothing but twisted horror.

Bang! A gunshot echoed through the surroundings.

The zombie was hit in the forehead, its movements faltering for a second. Su Wenwen quickly used a gauze item, and the pain in her back vanished instantly.

She lifted her leg and kicked the zombie away with all her might, then quickly bent down to pick up her dagger. But after falling, the zombie got back up and lunged at Su Wenwen again with incredible speed.

Its bloodstained hands slowed before Su Wenwen’s eyes. She gripped the zombie’s wrists tightly, the dagger in her hand once again stabbing toward its chin.

Dark red blood dripped down the blade, staining Su Wenwen’s fair hands. She found it strange. A zombie’s blood should be black and thick, mixed with a brownish-yellow fluid.

Her gaze shifted to the male zombie. The wound on its cheek also had a hint of fresh red. It was clear both of them had only recently turned.

“Are you okay?” Luo Xi came to Su Wenwen’s side, her hand reaching for her lower back, her brow furrowed with worry. “Let me see your injury.”

Su Wenwen had been focused on the zombies, so she hadn’t noticed the villain’s movement. She only felt a soft fingertip press against her lower back, making her entire body stiffen.
