I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 25

Farewell

The sudden slam of the brakes tilted the vehicle. Su Wenwen instinctively held the unconscious villain tight in her arms, her back inevitably slamming into a hard object. Gritting her teeth against the pain, she lowered her head to check if the villain had been hurt.

Fortunately, the villain was unharmed.

The zombie on the roof let out a roar. The sound was different from the previous zombies—deeper and more powerful. Just hearing it told you this one was strong.

Su Wenwen set the villain down, raised a hand to signal for silence in the vehicle, then drew her knife and placed her hand on the rear door.

The zombie’s strength was immense. It was pounding a series of small, bun-like dents into the roof, shaking the entire vehicle. The moment Su Wenwen opened the back door, she leaped out.

The zombie was missing a leg and was splayed across the roof in a crawling position. Its torn skin was covered in a layer of white frost. Under the sun’s rays, cold smoke swirled around its body. Its ripped-open abdomen was also frozen shut, forming sharp, irregular ice spikes.

When it opened its mouth, a blast of cold frost shot out. Su Wenwen recognized this zombie—it was Zhang Wenjie.

When an ability user dies and turns into a zombie, their power increases exponentially, making them incredibly difficult to deal with. Su Wenwen immediately tensed up. The instant the zombie pounced, she consumed the Dried Tofu and Buddha Jumps Over the Wall to start stacking buffs1.

The zombie was extremely agile and dodged Su Wenwen’s sharp knife. But Su Wenwen’s current agility was also high, and she didn’t let it touch her.

The two figures fought fiercely in the wide street. The zombie stayed low to the ground, crawling like Sadako2. Su Wenwen leaped into the air, using the power in her legs to jump three or four meters high. As she descended, she landed directly on the zombie’s back, bringing the knife in her hand down hard toward the back of its head.

Kuang!

The knife struck the layer of frost as if hitting a thick steel plate. The impact sent a numbing jolt up Su Wenwen’s wrist. “So hard.”

The ice covering the zombie’s body wasn’t ordinary ice; it was its armor. With her first attack failing, Su Wenwen quickly jumped away to create distance. But the zombie was mindless, only knowing how to chase and bite her.

It was crawling, so its missing leg didn’t affect its speed at all. Su Wenwen could only leap into the air, but to her surprise, the one-legged zombie used the strength of its arms to jump after her. It was a known fact that land creatures have great difficulty changing their direction mid-air.

Her pupils shrank. Just as she was about to collide with the zombie, Su Wenwen quickly kicked out, striking it square in the chest. She used the force of the impact to flip backward and land on the ground. Before she could even get up, that bone-chilling cold was behind her again.

Every hair on her body stood on end.

Just then, several gunshots rang out in quick succession, hitting the zombie in the head. With an uncanny accuracy, every bullet struck the same spot in the center of its forehead, shattering the outer layer of ice.

Su Wenwen’s five senses were enhanced; an ordinary person might not have noticed the bullet marks, but she could see them clearly. This level of marksmanship was impossible even for a top sniper. Unless… it was an ability.

She scrambled to her feet and turned toward the source of the sound.

Wang Kelin was rapidly swapping magazines. While the zombie was stunned, she pulled the trigger again. Bullets flew from the chamber, once again hitting the exact same spot on its forehead with precision.

The zombie was forced back step by step.

No matter how hard a skull was, it would eventually crack under continuous, targeted impacts. Seeing her chance, Su Wenwen rushed forward with her knife, raised her hand, and viciously stabbed at the fissure on the zombie’s forehead.

The force of the blow was so great that Su Wenwen’s knife pinned the zombie’s entire body to the ground. But she didn’t dare relax. Gripping the hilt with both hands, she pushed down again with all her might until the blade was fully embedded in its head. Only when she heard the system prompt confirming the mission was complete did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.

From this mission, Su Wenwen received 178 attribute points. Since she had only saved two people, her reward was just five rolls of gauze and one Great All-Nourishing Soup.

She didn’t immediately return to the vehicle. Instead, she twisted the knife in her hand. Cracking open the head of a dead zombie was much easier. With practiced ease, she extracted the crystal core and wiped it clean with a piece of paper.

There were nine in total. Combined with her previous ones, she had now accumulated thirty-three.

“What’s this?” Wang Kelin had gotten out of the vehicle to check on her when she didn’t come back right away.

Su Wenwen gave Wang Kelin four crystal cores and ushered her back to the vehicle, explaining the situation. When Wang Kelin and her teammates heard about abilities and crystal cores, their eyes filled with astonishment and a glimmer of hope for surviving the apocalypse.

“So my incredible accuracy just now… that was my ability?” Wang Kelin asked Su Wenwen.

Su Wenwen nodded and pointed at the villain. “Yes. Crystal cores can replenish the energy your ability consumes, and they can also boost it for a short time. But if you overuse your ability, you’ll end up just like her.”

“Abilities of the same type also have different strengths. The stronger the ability, the greater its destructive power and range.”

Wang Kelin listened in silence. She felt as if Su Wenwen was radiating a light—dazzling and powerful, yet humble and gentle.

Although she didn’t know how Su Wenwen knew all this so clearly, she knew that most people would never share such information. They would even hope to hoard this knowledge and improve their own strength as much as possible before anyone else found out.

But Su Wenwen had shared it all without any reservations.

By the time Su Wenwen finished her explanation, the convoy had smoothly returned to the camp. She and Wang Kelin helped the villain out of the car. When Sisi saw them, she immediately ran over and hugged Su Wenwen’s leg.

The little one was quite clingy. Su Wenwen smiled and patted her head. Just then, a female soldier ran over. She looked at the team members behind Wang Kelin, seemingly counting how many had returned.

“Squad Leader, we just made contact with the main forces. They told us to hold our position for a few days. They’ll be sending engineering personnel by helicopter soon to establish a small base here,” the female soldier said, her voice trembling slightly as she fought to control her emotions.

“Good. I understand.”

Su Wenwen and Wang Kelin helped the villain into a chair. Su Wenwen sat beside her, while Wang Kelin remained standing.

“Establishing a base is a good thing, but you should always leave yourself an escape route, so you can flee at a moment’s notice if the base is breached,” Su Wenwen said, her eyes on the villain’s sleeping face.

Wang Kelin laughed. “Don’t be so pessimistic. Once the base is successfully established, even a mutated zombie like the one just now would have a hard time breaking through the outer defenses.”

“I know the base defenses are strong, but the red rain from a few days ago was like a strengthening agent for the zombie virus. Not only did the zombies get stronger, but humans might have also gained abilities. But whether they are ability users or ordinary people, as long as they are mammals, the red rain virus remains in their bodies to some extent. Once they die, they will become zombies, even if they weren’t bitten.”

Wang Kelin was stunned. If what Su Wenwen said was true, then there was a high probability that the base would collapse from within. If they were unlucky, an entire base full of living people could be trapped inside. The consequences were unthinkable.

“Thank you for trusting me and telling me such an important secret. Is there a way to solve it?”

The word “trust” felt heavy. After the incident with Helian Yun, Su Wenwen didn’t trust people easily. She was simply making a judgment that benefited her based on the other person’s character profile.

Wang Kelin had a strong sense of responsibility and duty. She was upright and detested scumbags who bullied the weak. This had been fully demonstrated during the rescue mission.

“I can only say that there will be a way.”

Wang Kelin nodded. “Okay, I’ll remember what you said.”

After saying this, Su Wenwen felt a weight lift from her shoulders. She glanced back at the young female soldiers guarding the entrance, hoping they would be able to live well. This was all she could do for them.

Wang Kelin noticed Su Wenwen’s gaze. With a somber expression, she gathered all her team members. They buried the dog tags in the earth and set up simple tombstones, inscribed only with names and nothing else.

No date of birth, no date of death.

Wang Kelin said, “We are all ordinary people. We don’t need to be great heroes, and we don’t need any glorious deeds. I just want you all to live. Just live…”

The scene was one of sorrow.

Compared to them, Su Wenwen’s romantic entanglements with Helian Yun seemed so insignificant.

When Luo Xi woke up, the sun was about to set. It was her first time using her ability, and she hadn’t been able to control her emotions, causing the power to become chaotic and backlash against her own body.

When she opened her eyes, Su Wenwen was napping beside her. A meal had been prepared nearby, though it had already gone cold.

A strange feeling sprouted in Luo Xi’s heart. To wake up and see the person she wanted to see… her entire heart felt warm and full, as if overflowing.

Her eyelids lowered slightly as she watched Su Wenwen’s peaceful sleep. Without thinking, she reached out, her long, slender fingertip gently tapping the tip of Su Wenwen’s nose.

Even with such a gentle touch, Su Wenwen was woken up. She wrinkled her nose, seeming to catch a faint, fresh scent. Seeing that the villain was awake, she planned to take the cold food to be reheated.

“It’s so hot these days, eating it cold is fine.”

Su Wenwen watched as the villain picked up the bowl and began to eat in a slow, refined manner. She sat down beside her and recounted everything that had happened while she was unconscious. The villain listened as she ate, her gaze placid. Although her attitude was a bit cold, she was very quiet.

“So my ability is mental power?”

“Yes. Once you’re well-rested, we’ll leave this place tomorrow,” Su Wenwen said, sitting quietly beside the villain, enjoying the rare moment of peace. But ultimately, they still had to leave.

“I’ll listen to you.”

Su Wenwen raised an eyebrow. Hearing the villain say those three words gave her an indescribable thrill, because Helian Yun had never listened to her.

See? The white moonlight you could never have is so obedient to me. Wouldn’t you just die of anger? It’s a pity Helian Yun isn’t here, or I’d really enjoy watching the expression on her face.

The villain’s ability hadn’t fully recovered, and her body had been injured by her own power, so she still needed to recuperate. Su Wenwen pushed the crystal cores into her hand, telling her to absorb them slowly.

The villain sat upright, holding the crystal cores and closing her eyes, trying to find the method to absorb them. Su Wenwen didn’t disturb her and retreated outside the door.

Wang Kelin was on night watch. Only a small fire lit the vast, empty grounds. When she saw Su Wenwen, she said in a joking tone, “If only we had some wine right now.”

“I have wine.”

Su Wenwen went to the vehicle and brought back several bottles for Wang Kelin. “Here, drink up. I’ll take your watch tonight. Luo Xi and I are leaving tomorrow.”

Wang Kelin’s lips tightened as she took the bottle. She opened it with her military knife and started drinking silently. Her feelings were a strange mix right now; she didn’t know if she was sadder about her teammates’ deaths or about Su Wenwen’s imminent departure.

She drank one bottle after another, wanting to cloud her mind so she wouldn’t have to think about these things. But her alcohol tolerance was good, and it was difficult to get truly drunk.

Several times, she wanted to use her hazy drunkenness as an excuse to ask Su Wenwen why she wouldn’t stay, but the words died in her throat each time.

Wang Kelin lowered her head. “Su Wenwen, thank you for today.”

“En, you’ve already thanked me. You don’t have to keep saying it, or I’ll feel pressured.” Su Wenwen simply sat down on the ground next to Wang Kelin.

Wang Kelin smiled faintly. “It’s my good luck to have met a friend like you in the apocalypse. I wonder if we’ll have a chance to meet again after tomorrow.”

“Of course we’ll meet again.”
