Su Wenwen was in no mood to check her rewards. Her palm had been pierced, creating a hole from which blood was continuously dripping.
After using the gauze, the wound on her palm healed rapidly, visible to the naked eye. Wang Kelin, standing beside her, was completely dumbfounded.
Su Wenwen hugged the villain tightly, took out a crystal core from her spatial backpack, and placed it in the villain’s hand. “Don’t just stand there dazed. We need to leave this place quickly. I’ll explain everything to you when we get back.”
Her five senses were slightly stronger than an ordinary person’s; she had just heard the roar of zombies.
Wang Kelin nodded and signaled her teammates to start the car. However, just as the vehicle started, they heard gunshots. Judging by the sound, it came from the direction where the sniper had been previously positioned in the tall building.
“What happened?” Wang Kelin asked into the walkie-talkie.
“Zombies…”
The reply was brief and breathless, clearly indicating they were fleeing. Wang Kelin looked at Su Wenwen with a solemn expression. She knew Su Wenwen was no ordinary person and had also realized that after the Red Rain, the zombies had become incredibly tough; ordinary firearms couldn’t kill them.
“Please, help me save my people.”
【Received a request mission from the female supporting character: Proceed to the building to rescue N female soldiers (No penalty for mission failure; rewards will be based on the number of people rescued).】
Su Wenwen was tongue-tied. She hadn’t expected Wang Kelin to be promoted to a female supporting character so quickly, while she herself was still toiling to farm the villain’s favorability1.
She nodded and accepted the mission.
The military vehicle sped towards the building. As they passed the truck, everyone’s gaze lingered on it for an extra second.
The truck stood completely vertical, like a magnificent, astonishing structure. Its front was severely deformed, and there were bloody drag marks on the doors. Su Wenwen’s heart pounded with excitement—thump-thump—she knew this was the power of the strongest villain.
The vehicle parked on the roadside. Su Wenwen had initially planned to go alone, letting Wang Kelin and the others look after the villain, but Wang Kelin insisted on entering the building with her.
“I’m their Squad Leader. I can’t just sit here and wait for you to save them.” Wang Kelin handed Su Wenwen a combat knife and a hand grenade. “Bullets can only hold them back. Can you use this?”
“Just the combat knife is fine.”
Su Wenwen didn’t know how to use a gun anyway; the combat knife was sharper and sturdier than ordinary knives, its only drawback being that it was a bit short.
Her current Strength was thirty points, and her total attribute points were ninety-five. If she maxed out only Strength, with her current Agility, she probably wouldn’t even be able to touch the zombies.
Su Wenwen only increased her Strength to sixty, and her Agility, Endurance, and Stamina to thirty each, leaving twenty-five attribute points spare.
Taking her spatial backpack, she got out of the car with Wang Kelin, then turned back to instruct the female soldier, “Please take good care of her (Luo Xi). If you encounter zombies, don’t worry about us; retreat to the camp first.”
The female soldier looked at Wang Kelin. Only after seeing Wang Kelin nod did she agree to Su Wenwen’s request.
The building wasn’t too tall, only eleven stories. Through the walkie-talkie, they learned that the female soldiers were trapped on the seventh floor, and zombies were breaking down the door in the hallway.
Su Wenwen and Wang Kelin rushed into the building, climbing up the stairs.
Su Wenwen was much faster than Wang Kelin. Not only had her strength increased, but her leg power had also been enhanced. Taking two or three steps at a time, she soon reached the sixth floor.
From here, Su Wenwen couldn’t hear any commotion from the seventh floor. Feeling it was strange, she slowed her pace. The door to the seventh-floor hallway had already been smashed open. She quickly ran in, only to see a patch of red on the ground. A female soldier, her body contorted, was climbing up, staring at Su Wenwen for a few seconds with blood-red eyes.
The female soldier had turned into a zombie. Her military uniform was torn at the arms, shoulders, and abdomen, revealing bloody flesh underneath. Then, she opened her mouth, her pretty face stretching like a rubber band, and a low growl escaped her throat.
Without hesitation, Su Wenwen deftly plunged the combat knife in her hand through the zombie’s eye socket, driving it deep.
When Wang Kelin caught up, she saw the female soldier fall limply into Su Wenwen’s arms. She was stunned for a few seconds, then, with reddened eyes, slowly walked over, placed her hand on the female soldier’s head, and gently stroked it.
“She was only nineteen, just three months into her enlistment. A very talented sniper, hardworking and resilient. When the apocalypse broke out, she chose to stay and help with the rescue instead of going back to save her parents and relatives…”
Su Wenwen initially felt nothing; after all, she had seen too much death in her previous life. But listening to Wang Kelin mechanically recount the female soldier’s story, a pang of sorrow welled up in her heart.
Such a vibrant youth, yet in the apocalypse, she was merely an insignificant speck of dust, so small and powerless.
Su Wenwen laid the body down, covered the face with a helmet, and said coolly, “Don’t be sad. There are others waiting for you to save them.”
Wang Kelin rubbed her eyes, then removed the dog tag from the female soldier’s neck. She tried to contact the others via walkie-talkie, but after a few crackles, there was no response.
The two had no choice but to check each room on the seventh floor. The narrow hallway was already accumulating dust and stained with blood.
A window in a room on the eighth floor was broken. Su Wenwen heard it, quickly rushed into a room on the seventh floor, opened the window, and looked up. A female soldier was clinging to the windowsill of the eighth floor, her entire body hanging outside, teetering precariously.
Meanwhile, the sound of continuous gunfire echoed from a room on the eighth floor. Wang Kelin immediately rushed towards the eighth floor.
Su Wenwen glanced back, but before she could say anything, Wang Kelin was gone.
“Help me!”
The female soldier looked in terror at the zombie standing by the window. The zombie had spotted her; it lowered its head, leaning its dilapidated body out of the window, trying to grab her.
Su Wenwen quickly shouted, “Jump! I’ll catch you!”
The female soldier glanced down. Su Wenwen had lost a lot of weight these past few days and looked frail, as if she couldn’t withstand a gust of wind. Her arms were thin and pale, not inspiring much confidence.
“Don’t hesitate! If you don’t jump, you’ll definitely die. Trust me.” Su Wenwen grabbed the window frame with one hand and stretched out the other, mentally prepared.
Rather than fall to her death, the female soldier was even more afraid of being eaten alive. Steeling her heart, she closed her eyes and released her grip. Her body fell uncontrollably, tensing up completely.
With quick eyes and deft hands, Su Wenwen firmly grabbed the waistband of the female soldier’s trousers at her lower back with just one hand. Bending her arm, she pulled the soldier into her embrace. In that instant, the zombie and the female soldier brushed past each other as the zombie fell straight down.
Peng!
Even though its bones were tough enough, its body was twisted from the fall. Yet, it wasn’t dead; it was slowly wriggling towards the building.
The female soldier’s legs felt a bit weak. She leaned against the wall and thanked Su Wenwen. Su Wenwen didn’t reply because she saw a cut on the female soldier’s palm, and pustules were already forming around the wound.
Moreover, due to the Red Rain, ordinary people not only couldn’t resist the zombie virus, but it also accelerated the growth of pustules. In the brief moment they looked at each other, the pustules had already spread to her arm.
The female soldier gave a bitter smile, took out her handgun, and looked at Su Wenwen. “I thought I’d be fine if I cut out the bitten wound in time. Looks like I can’t escape death after all. Thank you for saving me just now. Can you let me be alone for a while?”
Su Wenwen said nothing, silently exited the room, and closed the door. At that moment, a gunshot rang out, taking another vibrant life.
The sound of an explosion came from the eighth floor. Su Wenwen didn’t delay and quickly ran up to the eighth floor.
The hallway was filled with smoke and dust; a piece of the ceiling had been blasted off. Two zombies were also mangled by the explosion. Wang Kelin shielded the two surviving female soldiers behind her, her gun continuously hitting the zombies’ heads.
The zombies were forced back step by step.
Su Wenwen gripped her combat knife, squatting against the wall. After Wang Kelin emptied a magazine, she immediately rushed behind a zombie and, with all her strength, plunged the combat knife into the back of its head.
This strike met little resistance. The zombie fell rigidly to the ground. Then, Su Wenwen kicked the zombie beside her with such force that it was pressed against the wall, unable to get up for a moment, only flailing its arms wildly. It slumped to the ground only after being finished off by the combat knife.
Although these few zombies had evolved, they were still the weakest ordinary zombies. The current Su Wenwen could handle them completely.
Wang Kelin and her teammate walked over and asked about the female soldier who had fallen from the eighth floor. Su Wenwen just shook her head in response.
Wang Kelin pursed her lips and silently followed Su Wenwen back to the room on the seventh floor. She looked down at the deceased female soldier, then collected her dog tag.
“Let’s go. Back to camp.”
Back in the military vehicle, everyone was silent. Wang Kelin held the dog tags, her thumb rubbing over them repeatedly.
She blamed herself deeply. The zombies were getting stronger, and sniper rifles were becoming almost useless. She shouldn’t have sent them to high-rise buildings to man sniper points; it was undoubtedly a wrong decision.
“Squad Leader, have some water!” a teammate offered her canteen.
Wang Kelin shook her head. Even though she was dying of thirst, she was in no mood to drink. She even thought about just dying of thirst.
“If the Squad Leader doesn’t drink, we won’t either.”
Hearing this, Wang Kelin had no choice but to put away the dog tags, take the water bottle, drink a mouthful, and then pass it to Su Wenwen. “You have some water too.”
Seeing Su Wenwen’s solemn expression and that she wasn’t taking the water, Wang Kelin thought she was being rejected and took back the water bottle with a wry smile.
“Be careful of your surroundings; the danger hasn’t passed.”
Su Wenwen hadn’t received the mission completion notification, which meant the danger still existed, and the mission was ongoing.
Hearing this, Wang Kelin quickly leaned half her body out of the car window, observing the surroundings with binoculars.
This small town had already been cleared of most zombies before the Red Rain. The corpses on the ground were rotten beyond recognition, and no active zombies were in sight.
But Wang Kelin trusted Su Wenwen; there had to be some danger lurking. She didn’t want any more casualties. A strong thought burst forth, and her vision became incredibly clear.
The fine particles on the ground looked like rows of large stones aligned before her eyes. She put down the binoculars, but her distant vision remained crystal clear.
Out of the corner of her eye, she glimpsed a figure plummeting from high above, accurately landing on the roof of the military vehicle, causing the sturdy metal to cave in.
The immense gravity caused the vehicle to lose balance. The tires twisted, the brakes slammed, and dark tire marks were etched onto the ground.
