I Pursued My Scummy Ex’s White Moonlight – Chapter 23

Terrifying Psychic Power

The military vehicle stopped by the side of the street.

Wang Kelin used binoculars to check the situation inside the factory, then gave a hand signal. Several snipers got out of the vehicle first, sneaking into nearby taller buildings to secure vantage points.

Then, the convoy continued to advance slowly. The temperature inside the vehicles was no lower than outside; in fact, the air was stuffy, and staying in for too long made one feel a bit dizzy.

Su Wenwen had already finished a bottle of water.

Sweat streamed down her back, and she felt as if all the moisture in her body was about to evaporate. She couldn’t bother with her image and wiped her sweat several times with her sleeve.

The others were in a similar state to Su Wenwen, all panting uncomfortably and sitting motionless. In contrast, Zhang Wenjie was clean and refreshed, as if he were in a different, comfortable world, completely out of sync with everyone else.

Considering the time, Zhang Wenjie was probably about to discover the abnormality in his body.

Zhang Wenjie was very hungry. Yesterday, in order to curry favor with Su Wenwen, he hadn’t eaten his fill, only having some rice soaked in broth. When food was distributed in the morning, they said the rules had changed: each person could only have one small bowl of rice, plus a salted duck egg.

He wasn’t convinced and went to argue with Wang Kelin, “On what grounds can I only eat one small bowl? It’s not even enough to fill the gaps between my teeth!”

Wang Kelin simply said, “What, just because you eat a lot, you should get more? So it’s only right that others eat less, is that it?”

“It’s not like I didn’t contribute to finding supplies.”

“You contributed, others contributed, and my teammates and I contributed even more. So shouldn’t the supplies be prioritized for us?” Wang Kelin said impatiently. “Don’t pester me with nonsense. Say one more word, and I’ll kill you directly.”

Zhang Wenjie felt very uneasy because he sensed killing intent in Wang Kelin’s eyes; her threat to kill him wasn’t a joke.

He secretly glanced at Wang Kelin, only to realize he was being stared at by an unsettling gaze, and a cold sweat instantly broke out all over him.

Could it be that his identity has been discovered?

Since it was like this, he could only strike first to gain the upper hand. Zhang Wenjie raised his hand to wipe the cold sweat from his forehead, and was stunned to realize he was sweating very little. In fact, if Wang Kelin’s gaze hadn’t scared him, he hadn’t sweated at all in the past two days.

The cold sweat was icy, below normal body temperature, and only slowly evaporated over time. He raised an eyebrow, finding it very strange. His body didn’t feel uncomfortable at all; on the contrary, it felt very light.

Could it be the special powers from apocalypse novels?

Although he thought it was a bit far-fetched, the apocalypse had already happened. Perhaps the bodies of the survivors had also undergone changes.

Thinking of this, Zhang Wenjie’s eyes lit up with excitement, and Su Wenwen noticed the change in his expression.

The vehicles slowly stopped in front of the construction site.

The construction site wasn’t completed yet, so there was no main gate.

The buildings were only frames, surrounded by sand, soil, and steel bars. Trucks were parked haphazardly, one of which had bloodstains and a corpse on it—only half a body, hanging from the truck door.

Baked by the sun, all moisture had been wrung out, making it look very dry. There were no zombies visible nearby for the moment, so Wang Kelin had a teammate go inside to scout first.

After confirming it was safe, Wang Kelin had everyone get out of the vehicles to move steel bars and sandbags. Su Wenwen saw a ground littered with dead zombies and was a bit reluctant to leave the crystal cores behind. She planned to quietly take a little detour, but before leaving, she remembered what the villain had told her last night, so she simply pulled the villain along with her, away from the group.

Wang Kelin noticed the two of them walking away. She didn’t follow, as she still had her duties, so she could only somewhat resentfully direct Zhang Wenjie to work.

Splitting heads was undoubtedly a disgusting and arduous task. Su Wenwen just had the villain keep watch nearby. She didn’t want too many people to know about the crystal cores yet; she would first silently develop and strengthen her own power.

【Has Host acknowledged that the villain is a tool?】

Su Wenwen ignored the system. The knife in her hand swung down. She discovered that after the zombies died, their skulls became much more brittle and not so hard to chop. She excitedly moved towards another zombie.

The skull was just as brittle.

In just fifteen minutes, Su Wenwen collected ten crystal cores. These zombies were all ordinary ones, with only one crystal core in their heads; she hadn’t encountered any formidable zombies.

Another fifteen minutes passed. The villain coughed softly, signaling Su Wenwen to hurry up. The group moving steel bars was probably about to finish. Su Wenwen didn’t delay, immediately tossing the collected crystal cores into her spatial backpack and returning to the group with the villain as if nothing had happened.

Zhang Wenjie was drenched in sweat, not from the heat, but from exhaustion. He had been moving steel bars for half an hour, his hands and feet were trembling, and his muscles ached. If not for his fear of the gun in Wang Kelin’s hand, he would have already made a move to take her out.

“That’s about enough, let’s head back.” Wang Kelin assigned a few people to drive the trucks. “Zhang Wenjie, you drive that truck.”

Wang Kelin pointed to the farthest truck at the very back, meaning for him to bring up the rear. In the apocalypse, the front and rear positions of a convoy were always the most dangerous. A selfish repeat offender like Zhang Wenjie naturally understood this.

His gaze was obscure and unreadable. He turned and walked towards that truck. Wang Kelin exchanged a look with her teammates, and everyone immediately turned and got into their vehicles.

Su Wenwen and the villain were in the military vehicle at the head of the convoy. Wang Kelin was also in this vehicle, sitting in the front passenger seat, constantly watching the vehicles behind. Then, she took the light sniper rifle handed to her by a teammate.

She coolly disengaged the safety on the sniper rifle, raised her hand to signal her teammate to drive the vehicle to the side. Holding the rifle, she leaned half her body out of the vehicle, aiming the muzzle at the tires of the last truck.

Zhang Wenjie had been wary of Wang Kelin all along. The moment he saw her raise the rifle, he immediately turned the steering wheel, hiding securely behind the truck in front of him. He was extremely furious, his whole body trembling.

The cold sweat that broke out was extremely icy. Through the rearview mirror, he saw a layer of frost had unknowingly formed on his forehead. But this layer of frost seemed to be a part of him; under the control of his will, it floated in mid-air, forming various shapes.

He was instantly ecstatic: “Just you wait! You want to kill me? I’ll make sure you all die without a burial place!”

The convoy reached an intersection. The military vehicle turned to the side and stopped, waiting for the trucks to pass one by one. Wang Kelin was very patient, keeping the rifle raised, her eyes unblinking.

Su Wenwen also held her breath, staring intently at the intersection. Just as the last truck began to emerge, her keen five senses detected a slight anomaly. She saw a dazzling gleam of light—the reflection of sunlight on an ice spike.

This light was aimed directly at the center of Wang Kelin’s forehead. Su Wenwen cried out in alarm, “Watch out!” She instinctively reached out, wanting to block the ice spike, but how could mortal flesh1 block something so sharp? Her palm was instantly pierced, and the pain made cold sweat stream down her face.

“Wenwen,” Luo Xi grabbed her hand.

Wang Kelin was also stunned. She didn’t know what had happened, just stared blankly at Su Wenwen’s bleeding hand.

Luo Xi took out a clean cloth, originally intending to press it against the wound, but the ice spike moved, attempting to fly out, causing Su Wenwen’s face to contort in pain.

Seeing this, Luo Xi felt as if something inside her had shattered, engulfed by endless rage. She wished she could tear Zhang Wenjie apart, along with his truck.

The abnormally intense emotions made her mind feel muddled, as if something was burrowing into it. Her vision went black, and she collapsed beside Su Wenwen…

Zhang Wenjie struggled to control the ice spike. He didn’t know if he had succeeded; the ice spike seemed to be stuck. The farther away he was, the weaker his control over it became. He had no choice but to stop the truck and slowly reverse.

But for some reason, the truck also seemed to be stuck. He tried to drive forward again, but it wouldn’t move. He reached out and slapped the steering wheel. The truck budged, its front end lifting up.

Zhang Wenjie leaned back against the seat, a sense of panic rising in his heart. He quickly reached out to open the door, but no matter how much strength he used, the door didn’t budge an inch.

The entire truck slowly tilted upwards until it was almost vertical. Zhang Wenjie kicked at the truck’s window with his foot until his sole ached, but the glass didn’t break.

“Sh#t, what the hell is going on.”

Just as he finished speaking, a section of the truck door suddenly caved in, and the roof followed suit, as if intending to crush him along with the vehicle. Only then did Zhang Wenjie feel fear, and he shouted loudly for help.

But no one responded to him.

“Kacha!”

The entire truck began to twist. The hard sheet metal was now so fragile, like dough being casually kneaded flat. The space inside the truck grew smaller and smaller, and Zhang Wenjie was so scared that tears and snot streamed down his face.

His legs were the first to be pinned by a tear in the metal. He pushed with all his might but still felt a heart-wrenching pain. And it wasn’t over; the pressure continued. His already bleeding legs were squeezed again, and the sound of bones shattering could be heard.

“Ah!” Zhang Wenjie screamed until his voice cracked.

He had thought he would die a miserable death, but the truck remained vertical, suddenly motionless. He patted the side window; the crushed glass was easily pushed out. He was crying and laughing at the same time.

He was tightly pinned. He didn’t know how to escape. The wounds on his legs were constantly bleeding. If he waited like this any longer, he would still not escape death.

Being half-dead was the hardest to endure.

Anger welled up in Zhang Wenjie’s heart; he didn’t want to die like this. He moved slightly, and the pain from his wounds made his whole body convulse. The courage he had just mustered instantly collapsed.

He wept bitterly, “You might as well just kill me.”

He sat in the truck; staying still lessened the pain a bit, so he planned to just wait for death. But as time passed, he bled more and more. When he started to feel dizzy and his head throbbed, he began to hallucinate.

Several bloody hands were strangling his neck. He was terrified and abruptly opened his eyes wide, seeing the hot, bright sunlight. The fear in his heart dissipated a little.

Zhang Wenjie tried to use his special power to freeze his wounds. By now, his lower legs had lost all sensation. With the wounds sealed by ice, he couldn’t feel any pain. He seemed to see a glimmer of hope.

He decided to freeze his entire lower legs solid.

His hands found a point of support, and then he forcefully pulled his legs. Because the nerves were frozen, no matter how he moved now, it wouldn’t hurt.

At the cost of his lower legs, Zhang Wenjie managed to break free. There was a small amount of space to move within the truck. He tried to crawl towards the window. Just as his hand reached the doorframe, a hand covered in pustules suddenly landed beside his.

In his terrified line of sight, he saw a zombie’s ravaged head slowly emerge, meeting his gaze with a pair of blood-red eyes…
